Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US English knitting terms and is worked mostly in the round. The finished puppy is shaped to match the photo: a large rounded head, small pear-shaped body, short rounded arms, long straight legs, floppy oval ears, and a neat seated pose.

The overalls are knitted as a fitted removable-looking garment, but they are sewn securely to the body for the cleanest finish. The argyle panel is created with color changes on the front bib and shorts. Small accessories complete the picnic-travel look shown in the image.

  • Finished dog height: about 11 inches from top of head to bottom of feet.
  • Head width: about 4.5 inches across when stuffed.
  • Body height: about 4 inches from neck to seat.
  • Leg length: about 4.25 inches including feet.
  • Arm length: about 3.25 inches.
  • Hat diameter: about 4.5 inches across brim.
  • Gauge: 7 sts and 10 rnds = 1 inch in stockinette using smaller needles.

Materials

  • Sport weight or light DK yarn in cream for head, body, arms, legs, tail, and hat crown.
  • Sport weight or light DK yarn in warm brown for ears, sandal soles, camera body, and basket.
  • Sport weight yarn in light blue for overalls trim, bag, hat band, and straps.
  • Small amounts of green, teal, yellow, white, pink, red, and darker blue for argyle, flowers, tongue, and accents.
  • US size 2 knitting needles or 2.75 mm double-pointed needles.
  • US size 1 knitting needles or 2.25 mm needles for firm accessories.
  • Two 10 mm black safety eyes.
  • One 12 mm glossy black safety nose, or black yarn for an embroidered nose.
  • Four small tan buttons, about 6 mm.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Waste yarn.
  • Small amount of black embroidery floss.
  • Optional: pipe cleaner or craft wire for bag strap shaping only, never for a toy intended for a baby.

Helpful Notes Before You Begin

Use a tight gauge so the stuffing does not show through the knitted fabric. The puppy in the photo has smooth, firm shaping, so stuff each part gradually. Avoid overstuffing the arms and legs because they should hang softly from the body.

The body, head, arms, legs, ears, overalls, and accessories are knitted separately. This gives better control over the photo-matching proportions. Sew all pieces with mattress stitch or small whipstitches, keeping the seams hidden on the underside or back.

  • Stuffing style: firm for head and body, medium for feet and legs, light for arms and ears.
  • Seam placement: keep ear seams toward the back and leg seams toward the inner side.
  • Facial placement: eyes sit low and wide on the head, giving the puppy a gentle toy-like expression.
  • Color control: twist yarns neatly on argyle sections to prevent holes.

Head

The head is the largest rounded piece. It should look almost spherical, slightly taller than it is wide, with a soft muzzle area at the lower front. Work in cream yarn using US size 2 needles.

  1. CO 8 sts. Divide across double-pointed needles and join to work in the round.

Pause here to place the eyes. Put the safety eyes between rnds 24 and 25, with 12 knitted stitches between them across the front. The eyes should sit slightly below the horizontal center of the head, as shown in the image.

  1. Rnd 36: *k4, k2tog; repeat from * around. 40 sts.
  2. Rnd 37: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 38: *k3, k2tog; repeat from * around. 32 sts.
  4. Rnd 39: k all sts.
  5. Rnd 40: *k2, k2tog; repeat from * around. 24 sts.

Stuff the head firmly. Shape it with more stuffing toward the cheeks and crown. Keep the lower front smooth so the nose and mouth can sit neatly in the center.

  1. Rnd 41: *k1, k2tog; repeat from * around. 16 sts.
  2. Rnd 42: k2tog around. 8 sts.
  3. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull closed, and weave in securely.

Muzzle Shaping and Face Base

The puppy in the photo does not have a separate protruding muzzle piece. Instead, the lower face is softly shaped with embroidery and gentle sculpting. This keeps the round knitted head clean and simple.

  • Thread cream yarn through the lower face from the back of the head.
  • Enter just below the nose position, about 5 rnds below the eyes.
  • Make two small tightening stitches under each eye to create soft cheek dimples.
  • Pull gently, not tightly, so the face remains rounded.
  • Secure the yarn at the back of the head and hide the tail inside.

Nose, Mouth, and Tongue

Place the black safety nose between rnds 28 and 30, centered between the eyes. If embroidering the nose, use black yarn and satin stitch a rounded triangle about 0.6 inch wide.

  1. With black embroidery floss, stitch one straight line down from the lower center of the nose for 3 rows.
  2. Make a small curved smile to the left using two short backstitches.
  3. Make a matching small curved smile to the right using two short backstitches.
  4. For the tongue, use pink yarn and CO 4 sts.
  5. Row 1: k4.
  6. Row 2: p4.
  7. Row 3: k2tog, k2tog. 2 sts.
  8. Row 4: p2tog. 1 st.
  9. Cut yarn and fasten off.
  10. Sew the wide edge just under the mouth line, letting the pointed end curve down slightly.

Ears

The ears are long, floppy, and warm brown. Each ear is oval with a rounded top and slightly narrower attachment edge. They hang from the sides of the head, starting just above eye level and falling to the cheek.

Make 2 ears in brown yarn. Work flat using US size 2 needles.

  1. CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: k all sts.
  3. Row 2: p all sts.
  4. Row 3: k1, kfb, k4, kfb, k1. 10 sts.

  6. Row 5: k1, kfb, k6, kfb, k1. 12 sts.
  7. Row 6: p all sts.

  12. Row 25: k1, ssk, k6, k2tog, k1. 10 sts.
  13. Row 26: p all sts.
  14. Row 27: k1, ssk, k4, k2tog, k1. 8 sts.
  15. Row 28: p all sts.
  16. BO all sts loosely.

Fold each ear lengthwise with the right side facing out. Sew around the edge with matching brown yarn, leaving the cast-on edge slightly open. Do not stuff. The ear should remain soft and flat, with enough weight to hang naturally.

Body

The body is smaller than the head and pear-shaped. It is rounded at the tummy and slightly narrower at the neck. The overalls cover most of it, but the cream arms and legs need to align cleanly with the body.

Work in cream yarn in the round.

  1. CO 10 sts. Join to work in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb in every st around. 20 sts.

  16. Stuff body firmly, adding extra stuffing to the lower belly.
  17. Rnd 28: k all sts.
  18. BO all sts, leaving a long sewing tail.

The open top of the body will be sewn to the underside of the head. Flatten the top slightly before sewing so the dog sits upright without the head tipping too far forward.

Legs

The legs are cream, long, and straight, with rounded feet at the bottom. The sandals are added separately. Make the legs identical and stuff them evenly, firmer at the feet and lighter at the upper leg.

Make 2 legs in cream yarn.

  2. Rnd 1: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb in every st around. 20 sts.

  14. Rnd 40: *k1, k2tog; repeat from * around. 12 sts.
  15. Rnd 41: k all sts.
  16. BO all sts, leaving a long sewing tail.

Shape the feet by pinching the toe area slightly upward while sewing. The feet should face forward and rest close together, just like the seated puppy in the image.

Arms

The arms are short, rounded, and simple. They taper gently at the top and hang down along the sides of the overalls. The lower ends should look softly mitten-shaped.

Make 2 arms in cream yarn.

Wrap the overalls around the body after the body is attached but before the arms are fully secured if you want hidden seams. The waistband should sit just below the arms, and the shorts should cover the upper legs.

  1. Place the shorts around the lower body with the bib centered on the front.
  2. Sew the back seam of the shorts using main blue yarn.
  3. Tack the lower cuffs around each leg with tiny stitches.
  4. Bring the bib upward over the belly.
  5. Sew the bib sides lightly to the body so it stays flat.
  6. Attach shoulder straps from back waistband to front bib.
  7. Sew tan buttons at the two front strap points.
  8. Add two more small tan buttons near the upper corners of the shorts if desired.

Argyle Surface Details

To make the overalls look closer to the picture, add fine stitched lines over the knitted color blocks. Use white, yellow, green, and teal yarn scraps. Keep the stitches flat and do not pull tightly.

  • Use white yarn to make diagonal lines across the center diamonds.
  • Use yellow yarn for small accent dots at diamond crossings.
  • Use green yarn to outline teal areas if they need more definition.
  • Use blue yarn to tidy any visible joins between the bib and shorts.
  • Keep floats hidden on the inside of the garment.

Accessory Placement

The photograph shows the puppy sitting with the sunhat, camera, and basket beside it. These pieces can remain separate for display, or they can be lightly sewn to a fabric base if you want a permanent arrangement.

  • Place the hat on the dog’s right side with the flower embroidery facing forward.
  • Place the camera in front of the hat, slightly angled.
  • Place the basket to the camera’s right side.
  • Let the crossbody bag rest on the dog’s front right hip.
  • Keep the bow high and visible from the front.

Use the following measurements to check your work before final assembly. Small variations are normal, but the proportions should stay close so the finished toy resembles the image.

  • Body: 3.25 inches wide and 4 inches tall before head attachment.
  • Each ear: 1.35 inches wide and 3 inches long.
  • Each leg: 1.1 inches wide and 4.25 inches long.
  • Each arm: 0.9 inch wide and 3.25 inches long.
  • Overalls bib: 3.25 inches wide and 2 inches tall.
  • Bag: 1.25 inches wide and 1.75 inches tall.

  • Basket: 1.6 inches wide and 1 inch tall.

Beginner Tips

If you are newer to toy knitting, finish one small part at a time and label the pieces. The many tiny accessories are simple individually, but the full project looks detailed because of careful layering.

  • Use stitch markers at the beginning of each round.
  • Count stitches after every increase and decrease round.
  • Stuff slowly, using small pieces of fiberfill.
  • Use pins before sewing to test the expression and posture.
  • Keep embroidery simple and symmetrical.
  • Do not rush the face, because it gives the puppy its personality.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check that the head is firmly attached and centered. Adjust the ears so they hang evenly on both sides. The eyes should look glossy and balanced, with the nose placed directly below the center point between them.

Add the mouth after the nose is secure. Sew the small pink tongue under the smile line. Attach the bow last so it sits neatly over the head curve without covering the ear too much.

  • Hide all yarn tails inside the toy.
  • Brush away loose fibers with your fingers.
  • Shape the cheeks gently after finishing.
  • Steam lightly only if needed, keeping heat away from safety eyes.

Care Notes

Spot clean the knitted puppy with cool water and a mild soap. Do not soak if you used safety eyes, buttons, or structured accessories. Let the toy air dry completely on a towel.

  • Do not machine wash.
  • Do not tumble dry.
  • Keep away from pets that may chew small parts.
  • For young children, embroider the eyes and buttons instead of using plastic or sewn-on pieces.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is round, firm, and larger than the body.
  • The brown ears hang softly to cheek level.
  • The argyle overalls sit high on the body.
  • The bag strap crosses the chest diagonally.
  • The sandals are centered on both feet.
  • The hat has a blue brim edge and flower embroidery.
  • The camera has a clear round lens.
  • The basket has a checked cloth and curved handle.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished knitted set in a dry place away from direct sunlight. If displaying it on a shelf, support the puppy in a seated position so the legs and head do not stretch over time.

To freshen the toy, place it in a breathable bag with a clean dry cloth and gently shake. For dust, use a soft makeup brush or a lint roller with very light pressure.

  • Keep the accessories together in a small box when not displayed.
  • Avoid heavy books or objects pressing on the hat brim.
  • Do not hang the puppy by the arms, ears, or bag strap.
  • Reshape the head and body gently with your hands after storage.
