Knitting Tutorial: Cute Elephant in Summer Outfit – Free Knitting Pattern

This cheerful knitted elephant is dressed for a bright summer day with a blue-and-cream striped shirt, yellow embroidered overalls, tiny sandals, a bow with a daisy, a round sunhat with a blue tie, a small shoulder bag, and two flower garlands. The finished toy has a large rounded head, soft oversized ears, a curved trunk, short arms, sturdy legs, and sweet blue eyes.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size and Construction Notes

This pattern is written for a knitted elephant doll measuring about 13 inches tall from the top of the head to the bottom of the sandals when worked with light worsted or DK-weight yarn and US size 3 needles. The proportions are designed to match the image: a large round head, broad ears, a small torso, short rounded limbs, and soft summer accessories.

The elephant is worked mostly in stockinette stitch with shaping. Pieces are knitted flat and seamed, which makes the pattern friendly for newer knitters. The trunk, ears, limbs, outfit pieces, hat, bag, flowers, and garlands are made separately, then stitched into place during final assembly.

  • Finished elephant height: approximately 13 inches.
  • Head width: approximately 5 inches across after stuffing.
  • Body height: approximately 4 inches before legs are attached.
  • Ear size: approximately 3 inches tall and 2.75 inches wide each.
  • Gauge: 24 stitches and 32 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch.
  • Knitting style: flat pieces with seams, plus optional i-cord details.

General Knitting Notes

Use firm tension for every stuffed piece. If your fabric looks loose and stuffing shows through, go down one needle size. The toy in the image has smooth, close stitches, so a dense fabric is important for a neat finish.

Leave long tails on all pieces for sewing. Stuff the head, body, trunk, arms, and legs firmly enough to hold shape, but do not overstuff the ears, clothing, hat, bag, flowers, or garlands. The ears should stay flexible and slightly curved.

Elephant Head

The head is large and rounded, with the widest area across the cheeks and ears. It is worked from the lower neck area upward, then shaped into a dome. Use light gray yarn.

Wrap the shirt around the body with the seam at the back. Sew the back edges together. Keep the top edge just below the neck and the bottom edge hidden under the bib and waistband of the overalls.

Sun Motif on Shirt

The little sun sits in the center of the shirt front. Use golden yellow yarn and embroidery stitches after the shirt is sewn to the body.

  • Make the center circle with a spiral of small chain-like duplicate stitches over 5 rows and 5 stitches.
  • Add 8 straight rays around the circle, each ray about 2 stitches long.
  • Place the sun centered between the overall straps and above the bib line.

Yellow Overall Shorts

The yellow overalls are bright and high-waisted, with a bib front, two straps, small buttons, and embroidered flowers. The shorts cover the lower body and upper legs.

Overall Straps

Make two straps. They run from the top of the bib over the shoulders to the back waistband.

  1. With yellow yarn, CO 5 sts.
  2. Rows 1-34: Knit every row.
  3. BO all sts.

Sew one end of each strap to the upper bib corners. Cross or run them straight over the shoulders as preferred. The image shows straps sitting straight and parallel from front to back. Sew the other ends to the back waistband.

Attach one small tan button to each front strap near the bib edge. Secure firmly with several stitches.

Embroidered Flowers on Overalls

The yellow shorts have tiny pink, orange, and white flower accents scattered across the front. Use small straight stitches and French knots if comfortable.

  • Place 6 to 8 small flowers across the front of the shorts.
  • Each flower uses 5 short petal stitches around one golden center stitch.
  • Use cream, yellow, soft pink, or orange yarn scraps for petals.
  • Keep each flower about 0.25 inch wide so the detail stays delicate.

Sandals

The sandals have a brown sole, cream straps, and tiny yellow flowers near the ankle. Make two sandal soles and straps.

Sew one brown sole under each gray foot. Place one cream strap across the toes and one around the ankle. Embroider three white oval toenails on each foot above the toe strap.

Tiny Yellow Sandal Flowers

  • With yellow yarn, make 5 small straight stitches in a circle on the outer side of each ankle strap.
  • Add one golden stitch in the center.
  • Keep the flowers flat so the doll can lie neatly as shown in the image.

Bow for Head

The yellow bow sits above one ear and has a small white daisy attached. It is soft, rounded, and slightly gathered in the center.

  1. With yellow yarn, CO 16 sts.
  2. Rows 1-10: Work in st st.

Small Daisy for Bow

  • With white yarn, make 6 short looped stitches around one center point.
  • With golden yellow yarn, stitch one small knot or tight circle in the center.
  • Sew the daisy to the middle-left area of the bow.

Eyes and Face

The elephant has large blue eyes with black pupils, white highlights, soft black brows, and a gentle expression. The eyes should sit above the trunk and close enough to look sweet and friendly.

For each pupil, embroider a black oval over the center of the blue eye. Add one white highlight stitch at the upper right side of each pupil. Sew the eyes to the face before attaching the trunk completely, spacing them about 1 inch apart.

Brows and Smile Lines

  • Use black yarn or embroidery floss for thin curved brows.
  • Place each brow about 0.35 inch above the eye.
  • Use one gentle curved stitch for each brow, slanting slightly upward toward the center.
  • Add a tiny hidden smile line at the lower trunk base if desired.

Sunhat

The sunhat is cream with a wide soft brim and a blue ribbon tie. It rests beside the elephant in the image, but you may also make it removable.

  2. Rows 1-8: Knit every row.
  3. Row 9: K2, k2tog, repeat to last 2 sts, K2. About 44 sts.
  4. Rows 10-12: Knit every row.

Sew the brim around the lower edge of the crown. The brim should flare outward and look soft, not stiff. A slightly wavy edge is correct for the handmade summer style.

Blue Hat Ribbon and Tie

  1. With blue yarn, CO 4 sts.
  2. Knit 70 rows in G st.
  3. BO all sts.

Wrap the blue strip around the hat crown and tie a small bow at one side. Stitch it in a few places so it stays secure but still looks like a loose ribbon.

  • Add one golden center stitch.
  • Place the flower button slightly below the center of the flap.

Flower Garlands

  2. Work a 3-stitch i-cord for 15 inches.
  3. BO all sts.
  4. Make a second vine the same way.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Curve the vines gently when placing them near the doll. Do not stiffen them. Their handmade softness is part of the design.

Simple Knitted Flowers

Make a mix of white, yellow, and blue flowers. Each flower is made with a tiny knitted strip shaped into petals.

  1. CO 12 sts in flower color.
  2. Row 1: K all sts.
  3. Row 2: K2tog across. 6 sts.
  4. Cut yarn and thread through all 6 sts.
  5. Pull tightly to gather into a small flower shape.

Assembly Order

  1. Sew and stuff the head, body, trunk, arms, legs, and feet first.
  2. Attach the trunk to the center front of the head, with the base starting slightly below the eyes.
  3. Sew the eyes in place, then embroider pupils, highlights, and brows.
  4. Sew the yellow inner ears to the gray outer ears.
  5. Attach the ears to the sides of the head, beginning near eye level and curving upward.
  6. Sew the head to the body, making sure the face points forward.
  7. Wrap and sew the striped shirt around the body.
  8. Sew arms to the upper sides of the body, slightly angled downward.
  9. Sew legs to the lower body so the feet point forward.
  10. Add the yellow shorts, bib, straps, buttons, and embroidered flowers.
  11. Add sandals, toenails, and sandal flowers.
  12. Sew the bow and daisy to the head.
  13. Finish the hat, bag, and garlands as separate accessories.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Before closing every seam, check the toy from the front and top. The head should be centered, the ears should be symmetrical, and the trunk should curve gently downward. Pin pieces first, then sew once you are happy with placement.

Use small, neat stitches for the face. Large stitches can change the expression quickly. The eyes should look bright and rounded, the brows soft and slightly curved, and the trunk centered between the eyes.

  • Eye spacing: about 1 inch between inner edges.
  • Trunk placement: base centered below eyes, tip curving downward.
  • Ear placement: upper edge slightly higher than the eyes.
  • Bow placement: above one ear, tilted gently.
  • Overall straps: straight and visible over the striped shirt.

Care Notes

Spot clean the elephant gently with cool water and mild soap. Do not scrub the embroidered details, buttons, eyes, or flower garlands. Press with a towel to remove extra moisture and allow the toy to air dry flat.

If this toy is intended for a young child, replace buttons and small attached details with embroidered alternatives. Always sew accessories securely and check them often.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is round, full, and larger than the body.
  • The trunk is lightly stuffed and curved.
  • The ears have yellow inner panels with gray borders.
  • The shirt has clear blue and cream horizontal stripes.
  • The sun motif is centered on the shirt front.
  • The overalls are yellow with straps, buttons, and tiny flowers.
  • The feet have cream sandal straps, brown soles, white toenails, and yellow flowers.
  • The bow has a small white daisy.
  • The hat has a cream brim and blue ribbon tie.
  • The bag has a long handle and brown flower button.
  • The green garlands include white, blue, and yellow flowers.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished elephant away from direct sunlight to help the blue, yellow, and cream colors stay bright. Keep the toy in a dry place and avoid crushing the ears, bow, hat brim, and flower garlands.

For long-term storage, wrap the elephant loosely in acid-free tissue or a clean cotton cloth. Do not seal it in plastic if the toy is even slightly damp. Let all pieces dry completely before storing.

Refresh the shape by gently smoothing the head, ears, trunk, and clothes with your hands. Do not iron the stuffed toy. If the hat brim curls too much, dampen it lightly, shape it flat with your fingers, and allow it to dry naturally.
