Knitting Tutorial: Orange Tabby Cat in Cardigan Sweater – Free Knitting Pattern

This sweet knitted orange tabby cat is dressed just like the toy in the photo: a cream cardigan with tiny flower embroidery, striped orange legs, patterned socks, blue flower sandals, a small hair flower, a rustic fair isle cap, a little floral shoulder bag, a tiny potted cactus, and a red ladybug friend. The finished doll is soft, rounded, childlike, and designed to sit beautifully as a display plush.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Main cat doll: about 11 in / 28 cm tall from sandal sole to ear tip.
  • Head: about 4.5 in / 11.5 cm wide after stuffing.
  • Body with cardigan: about 5 in / 12.5 cm tall from neck to lower body.
  • Arms: about 3.25 in / 8 cm long.
  • Legs: about 4 in / 10 cm long including socks and sandals.
  • Cap: about 3.5 in / 9 cm wide, made to sit beside the doll or fit loosely on the head.
  • Bag: about 2 in / 5 cm wide with a long knitted cord strap.
  • Cactus pot: about 2 in / 5 cm tall.
  • Ladybug: about 1 in / 2.5 cm long.

Skill Level

This pattern is written for adventurous beginners and intermediate knitters. The pieces are small, so take your time with counting, seaming, stuffing, and shaping. The doll is mostly knitted flat, then seamed, which makes the pattern easier to follow if you are still learning toy construction.

Yarn and Materials

  • Yarn weight: sport weight or light DK yarn.
  • Orange tabby yarn: about 55 yd / 50 m.
  • Cream yarn: about 50 yd / 46 m for muzzle, paws, socks, ear centers, cardigan, and sandal soles.
  • Dark brown yarn: small amount for stripes, ear edging, nose, pot, and cap details.
  • Blue yarn: small amount for eyes and sandals.
  • Black yarn: small amount for pupils, eye outlines, whisker dots, and ladybug spots.
  • White yarn: small amount for eye highlights and tiny flowers.
  • Green yarn: small amounts for cactus, leaves, stems, and cap motif.
  • Pink, yellow, purple, red, and teal yarn: small amounts for flowers, embroidery, ladybug, and accents.
  • Needles: US 2 / 2.75 mm straight needles.
  • Optional double-pointed needles: US 2 / 2.75 mm for i-cord straps and whisker-friendly details.
  • Toy stuffing: polyester fiberfill.
  • Four small buttons: 6 to 8 mm for cardigan front.
  • Tapestry needle: for sewing and embroidery.
  • Stitch markers: helpful for shaping.
  • Scrap yarn: for holding stitches.

Gauge

Gauge: 7 stitches and 10 rows equal 1 in / 2.5 cm in stockinette stitch using US 2 / 2.75 mm needles. Gauge is important for matching the proportions in the photo. A firm gauge keeps stuffing from showing and gives the cat a smooth, rounded knitted fabric.

If your knitting is loose, use a smaller needle. If your fabric feels stiff and hard to stuff, use a slightly larger needle. The doll in the image has a tight, even fabric with visible vertical knit columns, so aim for a neat, compact texture.

Pattern Notes

The cat is made in separate parts: head, body, arms, legs, tail, ears, cardigan, socks, sandals, cap, shoulder bag, cactus, and ladybug. Each piece is shaped with increases and decreases, then sewn together. The face is embroidered at the end so you can place the eyes, muzzle, nose, and whiskers accurately.

The image shows a large rounded head, short body, small arms, sturdy legs, and oversized bright blue eyes. The head should be slightly larger than the torso. The cardigan should look soft and roomy, with the lower hem sitting over the orange hips. The legs are visible below the sweater and show dark tabby stripes.

Use mattress stitch for neat seams where possible. Stuff gradually and firmly, especially the head and feet. Do not overstuff the arms; they should stay soft and slightly curved downward like the photo.

Main Head

Use orange yarn. The head is knitted flat from the lower face upward, then seamed at the back. This shaping creates the rounded kitten face seen in the image.

  28. Row 40: k1, k2tog, k12, ssk, k1. 16 sts.
  29. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread through remaining sts, pull gently, and secure after stuffing.

Before sewing the back seam completely, embroider the forehead tabby marks with dark brown yarn. Work one central vertical line from the top center of the forehead down about 1.25 in / 3 cm. Add two shorter curved lines on each side. These should sit above the eyes and angle slightly outward, matching the soft tabby markings in the photo.

Cream Muzzle Patch

The muzzle is a separate cream oval sewn onto the lower face. It should sit wide across the cheeks and narrow slightly under the nose.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 6 sts.
  2. Row 1: p all sts.
  3. Row 2: k1, m1, k4, m1, k1. 8 sts.
  4. Row 3: p all sts.

  9. Row 11: p all sts.
  10. Row 12: k1, k2tog, k2, ssk, k1. 6 sts.
  11. BO loosely.

Sew the muzzle to the lower center of the face after the head is stuffed. Curve the sides upward slightly so the cat has soft rounded cheeks. Do not pull too tight; the muzzle should look padded.

Inner Eye Patches

The photo shows cream rings around the blue eyes. Make two small cream oval patches and sew them in place before embroidering the eyes.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 5 sts.
  2. Row 1: p all sts.
  3. Row 2: k1, m1, k3, m1, k1. 7 sts.
  4. Row 3: p all sts.
  5. Rows 4 to 7: work in St st.
  6. Row 8: k1, k2tog, k1, ssk, k1. 5 sts.
  7. BO. Make a second patch the same way.

Place the patches about 0.5 in / 1.25 cm above the muzzle and about 0.5 in / 1.25 cm apart. Sew them with tiny stitches using cream yarn. The inner edges should sit close enough to create the kitten’s direct front-facing expression.

Blue Eyes

The eyes are embroidered and layered so they look bright, rounded, and glossy like the image.

  • Using blue yarn, satin stitch an oval inside each cream eye patch, leaving a narrow cream border visible.
  • Using black yarn, stitch a tall oval pupil in the center of each blue eye.
  • Using darker blue yarn, outline the lower and side edges of the iris with small stitches.
  • Using white yarn, add two tiny highlight stitches near the upper outside edge of each eye.
  • Using black yarn, make one short line at the top of each eye for definition.

The finished eyes should be large and slightly vertical, not round buttons. Keep both pupils centered and pointing forward for the gentle toy-like expression.

Nose, Mouth, Whiskers, and Cheek Dots

Use brown yarn for the nose. Satin stitch a small triangle at the top center of the cream muzzle. The triangle should be wider at the top and point downward.

  • Stitch the nose about 0.25 in / 6 mm below the eye line.
  • Work 4 to 5 horizontal satin stitches to fill the triangle.
  • Bring the yarn down from the nose point and stitch a short vertical line.
  • Add two small curved mouth lines, one to each side.
  • Use black or dark brown yarn to make three tiny cheek dots on each side of the muzzle.
  • For whiskers, use fine cream or light tan yarn. Stitch three long whiskers on each side, starting near the cheek dots and extending outward.

Sew each cream panel onto an orange ear, leaving a narrow orange border. With dark brown yarn, whipstitch around the outside edge of each ear to create the dark outline visible in the image. Sew the ears to the top sides of the head, angled outward slightly.

Orange Tabby Body

The body is short and rounded. It is mostly hidden by the cardigan, but orange should show at the lower hips and where the legs attach.

  1. With orange yarn, CO 18 sts.
  2. Row 1: p all sts.
  3. Row 2: k1, m1, k16, m1, k1. 20 sts.

  16. BO, leaving a long tail.

Sew the side seams and bottom seam, leaving the neck open. Stuff firmly but keep the front smooth for the cardigan. Sew the head to the body with the face centered forward. Add extra stitches around the neck so the large head sits securely.

Arms

The arms are cream at the paws and orange near the shoulders, but most of the upper arm will be covered by the cardigan sleeves. Make two.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 10 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 4: work in St st.

  9. Cut yarn, thread through sts, and pull closed.

Sew the side seam of each arm. Stuff lightly. With orange yarn, make two short claw lines on each cream paw. Sew arms to the sides of the upper body so they point down and slightly outward.

Tabby Stripe Placement

The orange tabby markings give the cat its personality. Use dark brown yarn and small duplicate stitches so the stripes sit on top of the knitted fabric without becoming bulky.

  • Forehead: one central long line and two shorter lines on each side.
  • Cheeks: two short angled stripes on each side of the face, placed outside the cream muzzle.
  • Arms: one or two subtle brown stitches near the orange upper arm if visible.
  • Legs: two ring stripes on each leg, worked around the front and sides.
  • Tail: two or three ring stripes, with cream tip left clean.

Keep the stripe stitches slightly uneven and soft. The cat in the image looks handmade and gentle, so the stripes should not appear too sharp or heavy.

Making the Face Symmetrical

Before securing any facial detail permanently, place the head on a flat surface and look at it straight on. The eyes should be level, the muzzle centered, and the ears evenly angled. Use removable sewing pins or short pieces of scrap yarn to mark positions first.

  • Eye centers should sit about halfway between the top of the muzzle and the base of the ears.
  • The muzzle should be centered over the lower third of the face.
  • The nose should sit at the top middle of the muzzle.
  • Whiskers should angle outward and slightly downward.
  • The hair flower should sit near the cat’s right ear, not centered.

Stuffing Tips

Stuffing controls the final shape. Add small amounts at a time and push stuffing into corners with the blunt end of a needle or a small stuffing tool. The head should be round and firm, but not stretched. The body should be softer and slightly oval.

The legs and feet need firmer stuffing so the sandals sit nicely. The arms need lighter stuffing so they hang naturally. The tail should be bendable, with just enough stuffing to hold its shape.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Sew the body closed and attach the head firmly at the neck.
  2. Sew the ears to the top sides of the head, checking both height and angle.
  3. Attach the cream muzzle and eye patches if not already sewn.
  4. Embroider the blue eyes, black pupils, white highlights, brown nose, mouth, cheek dots, and whiskers.
  5. Sew arms to the upper sides of the body.
  6. Sew legs to the lower body, keeping both feet forward.
  7. Attach the tail to the back lower body and curve it to the side.
  8. Dress the doll in the cream cardigan and sew small anchor stitches at the shoulders if needed.
  9. Add the cardigan buttons and floral embroidery.
  10. Place socks and sandals on the feet and secure invisibly with matching yarn.
  11. Sew the hair flower near the right ear.
  12. Finish the cap, bag, cactus, and ladybug, then arrange them beside the cat.

Care Notes

Handle the finished cat gently, especially the embroidered eyes, whiskers, flowers, and small accessories. This project is best used as a keepsake or display toy. If making for a child, replace buttons with embroidered circles and secure all small parts extremely firmly.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Spot clean only with cool water and a small amount of mild soap. Dab gently with a clean cloth and avoid rubbing the embroidered face. Do not machine wash if the doll includes buttons, tiny accessories, or delicate flower embroidery.

Allow the doll to air dry flat on a towel. Reshape the ears, feet, cardigan, and tail while damp. Keep the cat away from strong sunlight for long periods so the orange, blue, pink, and green colors stay fresh.

Store the accessories together in a soft cloth bag when not displayed. To remove dust, use a clean dry paintbrush or lint-free cloth. Avoid pulling loose fibers; trim them carefully with small scissors instead.
