Knitting Tutorial: Jerry Mouse in Sailor Outfit – Free Knitting Pattern

This cheerful knitted sailor mouse is a detailed amigurumi-style project with a warm brown body, oversized pink-lined ears, bright oval eyes, a striped blue-and-white sailor shirt, blue shorts, a red bow tie, and tiny seaside accessories. The finished set includes a matching striped shoulder bag with a sailboat motif, a yellow sun hat, red anchor shoes, a small crab purse, a lifebuoy, and a blue fish.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size and Construction Notes

This pattern is written for a firmly knitted toy worked mostly in the round. The main mouse measures about 10.5 inches tall from the soles to the top of the head, not including the small hair tuft. The head is large and rounded, the ears are wide and flat, and the body is short to match the playful proportions shown in the photo.

The toy uses separate knitted pieces that are stuffed, shaped, and sewn together. The clothing is made as fitted knitted pieces so the sailor outfit sits close to the body. The accessories are small but important because they create the nautical look: striped bag, straw-style hat, red shoes, crab, fish, and lifebuoy.

Important Gauge and Stuffing Tips

Use needles smaller than the yarn label recommends. A toy should not have visible holes after stuffing. If stuffing shows through the fabric, change to smaller needles before starting again. The photo shows a smooth, firm fabric with clear knitted texture, so firm gauge is important.

Stuff gradually rather than all at once. The head should be round and full, the muzzle should project forward softly, and the limbs should be lightly shaped rather than overstuffed. The ears are not stuffed. They are flat discs with pink centers and brown rims.

Main Head

The head is a large rounded oval in brown. It should be wider than the torso and slightly taller than it is deep. Work in the round and place a marker at the beginning of each round.

  1. With brown, CO 8 sts and divide across needles.
  2. Rnd 1: Kfb in every st. 16 sts.

The tail is a thin brown knitted cord visible behind the shorts.

  1. With brown, CO 4 sts.
  2. Work an I-cord for 4.5 inches.
  3. BO and weave in ends.

Sew the tail to the lower back of the body, just above the shorts line. Curve it gently to one side so it peeks out from behind the outfit.

Sailor Striped Shirt

The shirt is blue and white with horizontal stripes, short sleeves, and a rounded neckline. It is fitted over the body before the head is attached, or it may be sewn closed at the back after dressing.

Crab Strap

  1. With red, CO 3 sts.
  2. Work I-cord for 4.5 inches.
  3. BO.

Sew the strap diagonally across the shirt from one shoulder toward the opposite hip. Attach the crab body at the lower end of the strap so it rests on the right front of the shirt.

Keep the center hole open. Do not overwrap the red bands, or the ring will lose its neat circular shape.

Blue Fish

The little fish is light blue with a darker blue tail and small white scale details. It is a flat accessory that sits beside the toy.

  1. With light blue, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: P all sts.

  4. Row 3: K all sts.
  5. BO.

Sew the tail to the narrow end of the fish body. Add a black eye near the front and a few white duplicate stitches for scales.

Facial Shaping and Expression

The friendly expression depends on careful placement. Before sewing permanently, pin all facial pieces first. The eyes should be tall and close together. The muzzle should be centered below them and slightly raised with stuffing. The mouth should be open and smiling with the pink tongue visible.

  • Place the eyes between rounds 15 and 25 of the head.
  • Keep the inner edges of the eyes about 2 stitches apart.
  • Place the muzzle from rounds 23 to 32.
  • Place the nose at the top center of the muzzle.
  • Place the tongue inside the lower smile.
  • Place whiskers after the muzzle is fully attached.

Body Assembly

  1. Sew the legs to the lower body, making sure both feet point forward.
  2. Dress the body in the blue shorts and adjust the cuffs evenly.
  3. Put the striped shirt over the upper body and smooth the stripes.
  4. Sew the arms to the sides, placing them just below the sleeve openings.
  5. Sew the head to the body with strong brown yarn, adding extra stitches around the neck for stability.
  6. Attach the red bow tie at the neckline.
  7. Add the crab strap diagonally across the shirt and sew the crab in place.
  8. Attach the bag strap over the shoulder and secure the bag near the left side.

When sewing the head, check the toy from the front, side, and back. The head should sit straight, but the ears and cap give it a playful look. Use several rounds of hidden stitches around the neck so the head does not wobble.

Accessory Placement

The accessories in the photo are arranged around the mouse like a beach outfit set. The yellow hat sits to the right side, the red shoes rest near the lower right, and the small lifebuoy and fish sit between them. The bag is worn on the left side.

  • Hat: Display beside the mouse or lightly tack it to one side of the head.
  • Shoes: Place beside the toy or sew onto the feet if you prefer a dressed version.
  • Lifebuoy: Keep as a loose prop or stitch it to the bag strap.
  • Fish: Use as a small display piece near the shoes.
  • Crab: Sew to the shirt so it looks like a tiny crossbody purse.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check every seam and gently reshape the toy with your hands. Add a little extra stuffing through any opening before closing if the head or body looks soft. The mouse should stand or sit neatly with a large round head, wide ears, short body, visible brown legs, and bright sailor outfit.

Use black thread for the final facial details. Add eyebrow curves above the eyes with small arched stitches. Place one eyebrow above each eye, following the cheerful expression in the image. Keep the stitches light and symmetrical.

  • Secure all yarn tails inside the toy.
  • Trim the hair tuft neatly.
  • Check that the ears match in height and angle.
  • Make sure the bow tie is centered.
  • Make sure the bag hangs naturally from the shoulder.

Care Notes

Because this toy has small sewn accessories, hand washing is recommended. Use cool water and mild soap. Do not twist the toy. Press gently in a towel to remove moisture, then reshape the head, ears, clothing, and accessories while damp.

  • Do not machine dry.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For long-term display, keep the finished knitted mouse away from direct sunlight to reduce fading. Store small accessories in a breathable cotton bag when not displayed. If the toy becomes flattened, gently fluff the stuffing with your fingers and reshape the ears and muzzle by hand.

For spot cleaning, dampen a clean cloth with cool water and mild soap. Dab the area gently, then dab again with plain water. Let the toy air dry completely before storing. Avoid soaking if the toy contains cardboard shaping inside the hat or very delicate embroidered details.

To preserve the facial expression, avoid pulling on the whiskers, eyes, or muzzle. If a detail loosens, repair it with matching yarn or embroidery thread. Small stitches placed carefully on the back side of each piece will keep the finished sailor mouse neat, secure, and ready for display.
