Knitting Tutorial: Giraffe in Striped Overalls – Free Knitting Pattern

This sweet knitted giraffe is designed with a round tan head, soft cream muzzle, brown giraffe spots, little ossicones, wide ears, and glossy safety eyes. The outfit includes a green textured sweater, cream-and-golden striped overalls with straps, buttons, and a front pocket, plus matching striped socks and tiny sandals. The set also includes a daisy hair detail, shoulder bag with mushroom applique, pom-pom beanie, berry basket, and miniature watering can.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

The finished giraffe measures about 12.5 inches tall from the bottom of the feet to the top of the ossicones when knitted with DK weight yarn and 2.75 mm needles. The head is intentionally oversized and rounded, the body is smaller and dressed, and the legs are long enough to show the green striped socks below the short overalls.

  • Head width: about 4 inches across after stuffing.
  • Body height: about 3.25 inches from neck to crotch.
  • Leg length: about 3.75 inches from hip to foot.
  • Arm length: about 3 inches from shoulder to hoof.
  • Overalls: high-waisted with rounded shorts, a front bib, narrow straps, two tiny buttons, and a small center pocket.
  • Accessories: shoulder bag, beanie hat, berry basket, watering can, knitted daisy, and leaves.

Skill Level

This is an intermediate knitting pattern because it uses small pieces, shaping, color changes, short accessories, embroidery, and assembly. A confident beginner can make it slowly by completing one piece at a time. Most pieces are worked in stockinette stitch, so the finished toy has the smooth knitted surface shown in the image.

Materials

  • DK weight yarn in tan: main giraffe head, body, ears, arms, legs, hat, basket, bag, and sandal trim.
  • DK weight yarn in cream: muzzle, inner ears, overall stripes, bib edging, straps, shorts cuffs, and sandal soles.
  • DK weight yarn in warm golden ochre: overall stripes and pocket edging.
  • DK weight yarn in olive green: sweater, socks, leaves, and sandal tops.
  • DK weight yarn in dark brown: hooves, ossicone tips, giraffe spots, and face embroidery.
  • DK weight yarn in white: daisy petals.
  • DK weight yarn in yellow: daisy center.
  • Small scraps in red, blue, purple, and dark green: berries in the basket.
  • Light gray DK yarn: watering can.
  • 2.75 mm double-pointed needles: for toy pieces worked in the round.
  • 2.75 mm straight needles: for flat outfit pieces, bag, pocket, and accessories.
  • Two 8 mm black safety eyes: or embroidered eyes for young children.
  • Two small tan buttons: about 6 mm wide for the overall straps.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Small pom-pom maker: optional, for the hat pom-pom.

Gauge

Gauge is important because the giraffe should have a firm, plush surface without visible stuffing. In stockinette stitch using 2.75 mm needles, aim for 28 stitches and 38 rounds over 4 inches. If your fabric is loose, use smaller needles. If it is too stiff to shape smoothly, use slightly larger needles.

Construction Notes

The giraffe is knitted in separate pieces and sewn together. The head, body, arms, legs, ears, muzzle, and ossicones are separate so the proportions match the image: a large round head, smaller dressed body, slim arms, and long socked legs. The overalls are knitted as a removable-looking layer but sewn lightly in place for a neat display finish.

Use firm stuffing, especially in the head and feet. Shape the head into a soft dome, not a tall oval. The muzzle sits low on the face and should be slightly raised. Place the eyes above the muzzle, wide apart, so the face looks gentle and toy-like.

Main Head

Work the head in tan yarn in the round. The head is almost spherical, with a little extra height at the crown for the ears, ossicones, and flower detail.

  1. CO 8 sts in tan and divide evenly over double-pointed needles. Join in the round.

Lightly stuff behind the muzzle while sewing it to the face. Position the top of the muzzle about 3 rounds below the eyes. Sew with small mattress stitches, keeping the oval smooth. With dark brown yarn, embroider a small upside-down Y shape: one vertical line from the center down and two short diagonal nose lines at the top.

Giraffe Spots

Facial Embroidery

Use dark brown yarn or embroidery floss for the face. The image shows a simple, calm expression with a tiny nose and vertical mouth line. Avoid heavy embroidery so the muzzle stays soft.

  • Sew a short horizontal nose line across the upper center of the cream muzzle.
  • Bring one vertical line down from the center of the nose.
  • Add two very short diagonal lines from the nose center to form a gentle Y shape.
  • Optional: Add two tiny brown eyebrow stitches above the eyes, angled downward toward the center for a sweet sleepy look.
  • Secure all embroidery knots inside the head or under the muzzle edge.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Attach the head to the body using the long body tail. Sew around the neck twice for strength, making sure the head faces forward and sits directly over the green collar. Add extra stitches at the back of the neck if the head tips forward.

  1. Sew the legs to the lower body before positioning the overalls permanently.
  2. Sew the arms at the upper sides, slightly angled down.
  3. Place the sweater body around the torso and seam it at the back.
  4. Slide the striped shorts over the lower body and tack them into place.
  5. Sew on the bib, straps, buttons, and pocket.
  6. Attach ears to the sides of the head, then sew ossicones to the crown.
  7. Sew the spots to the head after the main facial pieces are secure.
  8. Add the daisy and leaves near one ear.
  9. Check the sandals, socks, and sleeve cuffs so all stripes face neatly forward.

For the final look, gently massage the stuffing into a round head shape. The cheeks should be full, the muzzle should be centered, and the eyes should sit evenly above the muzzle. Use a few hidden stitches to pull the lower corners of the head slightly inward if you want a sweeter plush expression.

Care Notes

This knitted giraffe is best used as a decorative handmade toy. If you use safety eyes, it is not recommended for children under 3 years old. For a child-safe version, embroider the eyes with black yarn and sew all buttons and accessories with extra reinforcement.

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if the toy has buttons, pom-poms, or glued details.
  • Do not tumble dry.
  • Let the toy air dry flat on a towel.
  • Reshape the ears, muzzle, hat, and accessories while damp.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Head: round, firmly stuffed, with muzzle centered low on the face.
  • Eyes: evenly placed and secure.
  • Spots: scattered naturally on the forehead and cheeks.
  • Ears: cupped and angled outward.
  • Ossicones: upright with dark brown rounded tips.
  • Sweater: olive green with ribbed collar and center cable detail.
  • Overalls: cream and golden stripes, front bib, pocket, straps, and buttons.
  • Legs: visible green striped socks under the shorts.
  • Feet: dark hooves with soft sandals.
  • Accessories: daisy, leaves, shoulder bag, beanie, basket, and watering can completed.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, clean only the area that needs attention. Dab gently with a damp cloth instead of rubbing. Rubbing can fuzz the knitted surface and distort the small stitches on the muzzle, spots, and accessories.

When storing the giraffe, keep it in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Place the hat, basket, bag, and watering can beside the toy rather than stacked on top of it, so the small pieces do not press into the knitted fabric.

If the toy becomes flattened, gently loosen the stuffing by rolling the piece between your hands. Do this slowly around the head, feet, and body. Avoid pulling the ears or ossicones because they are small sewn pieces.

For long-term display, dust the giraffe with a soft brush. Check the buttons, straps, daisy, and bag handle occasionally. If a stitch loosens, secure it immediately with matching yarn and a tapestry needle.

Your knitted giraffe in striped overalls is now complete, with its cozy green sweater, tiny sandals, garden accessories, flower detail, and sweet handmade expression.
