Knitting Tutorial: Lamb in Striped Cardigan – Free Knitting Pattern

This sweet knitted lamb is dressed like a tiny garden-day companion, with a soft cream woolly hood, beige lamb face, floppy ears, blue pinafore dress, cream-and-blue striped cardigan, crossbody flower purse, white socks, tan button shoes, and matching miniature table props. The finished doll has a gentle seated shape, rounded head, glossy eyes, embroidered lashes, and cozy layered clothing just like the image.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size and Construction Style

This pattern is written for a seated lamb doll measuring about 11 inches tall from the soles to the top of the hood when worked with DK yarn and 3 mm needles. The lamb is knitted mostly in the round for smooth shaping, while the cardigan, purse flap, flower, bow, and small props are worked flat.

The proportions are designed to match the photo: a large rounded head, a smaller soft body, short rounded arms, dangling legs, oval ears placed at the sides of the hood, a full blue dress skirt, a cropped cardigan with horizontal stripes, and small accessories that add the handmade storybook look.

Materials

  • Yarn weight: DK or light worsted yarn. Choose soft wool, cotton blend, or acrylic suitable for toys.
  • Main lamb beige: 35 g for face, ears, hands, and feet.
  • Fluffy cream or bouclé white: 45 g for hood, cardigan base, socks, and shoe toe patches.
  • Dusty blue: 45 g for dress, cardigan stripes, tiny hat, and one mug.
  • Taupe or oatmeal beige: 25 g for shoes, purse, bow, and second mug.
  • Dark gray or black embroidery yarn: for nose, mouth, lashes, and brows.
  • Small amount of cream embroidery yarn: for dress speckles and flower center.
  • Needles: US 2.5 or 3 mm double-pointed needles for round knitting.
  • Straight needles: US 2.5 or 3 mm for flat cardigan and small accessories.
  • Safety eyes: 8 mm black eyes, or embroidered eyes for young children.
  • Buttons: five 6 mm wooden buttons for cardigan, two 6 mm buttons for shoes, and one tiny button for the purse if desired.
  • Stuffing: polyester fiberfill.
  • Other tools: yarn needle, stitch markers, pins, scissors, row counter, and removable stitch holders.

Gauge

Work 24 stitches and 34 rounds over 4 inches in stockinette stitch with the main smooth yarn on 3 mm needles. Exact gauge is not critical for a toy, but a firm fabric is important. If stuffing shows through, use smaller needles. If the fabric is too stiff to shape, use needles one size larger.

Helpful Notes Before You Start

Stuff each body part gradually and firmly, but do not overstuff. A softly rounded lamb face looks best when the fabric is smooth and not stretched. The hood should sit around the face like a fluffy bonnet, so keep the face section neat and the hood edge slightly raised.

When using fluffy yarn for the hood, count stitches carefully. Place a marker at the start of each round, and check the stitch count after every increase or decrease round. If fluffy yarn is difficult for beginners, use smooth cream yarn and brush it lightly after finishing.

The cardigan is made as a separate garment so it sits over the dress, with visible cream and dusty blue stripes. The front is left open, and small buttons are sewn down one side to copy the photo. The buttons can be decorative only.

Head and Face

Use beige yarn and work in the round. This head is wide and softly oval, with the widest area around the cheeks and the top tapering gently under the hood.

Face Embroidery

  • With black embroidery yarn, stitch a small Y-shaped lamb nose centered about 5 rounds below the eyes.
  • Make two short diagonal lines from the nose center to form the mouth. Keep the lines delicate.
  • Add one short lash at the outer side of each eye using a single straight stitch.
  • Add two tiny curved eyebrow stitches above the eyes, angled slightly upward for a soft sleepy look.
  • Do not pull the embroidery too tight. The face should remain rounded and calm.

Body

The body is smaller than the head and shaped like a seated doll torso. Use beige yarn for the hidden body base. The dress will cover most of this section, so the main goal is a firm pear shape that supports the head and clothing.

  1. CO 10 sts with beige yarn. Join to work in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts. 10 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Kfb in every st around. 20 sts.

  18. BO, leaving a long tail for sewing the head to the body.

Legs

  2. Rnd 1: K all sts. 12 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Kfb in every st around. 24 sts.

Tan Shoes with Cream Toe Patches

Make two shoes. The shoes in the image are soft tan Mary Jane style shoes with cream toe panels and a small button on the outer side. They should look rounded and slightly oversized compared with the leg.

  3. BO and make a second strap the same way.

Cream Speckles on Dress

  • Using cream yarn, embroider short duplicate-stitch marks randomly across the skirt and bodice.
  • Make each mark only 1 stitch wide or 2 stitches wide.
  • Keep the marks sparse, because the image shows small soft flecks rather than a busy pattern.

Striped Cardigan

The cardigan is cream with horizontal dusty blue stripes, long sleeves, a cropped body, a ribbed edge, and small wooden buttons down the front. It is worked flat in one piece from the bottom up, then divided for fronts and back. The sleeves are knitted separately and sewn in.

Assembly Order

  1. Sew the legs to the lower front of the body, placing them close together so they hang over the edge when the lamb is seated.
  2. Put the blue dress onto the body. Adjust the skirt so the garter hem flares evenly.
  3. Sew the head to the body using the long body tail. Add extra stitches around the neck for strength.
  4. Sew arms to the upper sides of the body. Angle them slightly downward so the cardigan sleeves rest naturally.
  5. Place the cardigan over the arms and shoulders. Sew or tack it at the back neck and underarms if you want it permanent.
  6. Slide the crossbody purse strap from the left shoulder to the right hip. Tack the strap lightly under the cardigan neckline and near the purse side.
  7. Sew the hood securely around the head, then attach ears and the bow.
  8. Add the shoes, buttons, purse flower, dress speckles, and final facial embroidery.

Detailed Styling for the Photo Look

To match the gentle image style, keep the lamb’s face centered and calm. The eyes should be glossy and evenly placed, while the nose and mouth should be thin and delicate. Large embroidery stitches can change the expression, so use single strands and small movements.

The cardigan should sit slightly open at the front, showing the blue dress underneath. Do not pull the cardigan closed too tightly. The stripes should remain horizontal across the chest and sleeves, with the cream bands looking wider than the blue bands.

The hood should look fluffy and rounded, not tight like a cap. After sewing it in place, use your fingers to lift the front edge slightly around the face. The ears should emerge from the sides beneath the hood, giving the lamb a soft toy-like silhouette.

The purse should sit low on the front right side of the body. The strap crosses diagonally over the cardigan and dress, making the outfit look layered. Sew the flower firmly so the petals stay visible and do not curl inward.

Optional Weighted Sitting Base

If you want the lamb to sit steadily on a shelf or table, add a small fabric pouch of plastic pellets inside the lower body before fully stuffing. Do not use loose pellets without a pouch. For a child’s toy, skip the weighted base and use only soft stuffing.

Beginner Tips

  • Use stitch markers at the beginning of every round, especially on the head, body, hood, and hat.
  • Count stitches after every shaping round so the doll stays symmetrical.
  • Stuff slowly. Add small pieces of stuffing instead of one large clump.
  • Pin every part before sewing. Check the lamb from the front, side, and back.
  • Use matching yarn tails for sewing whenever possible.
  • If the cardigan feels too tight, block it lightly before sewing on the buttons.
  • If the hood covers too much of the face, roll the front edge outward and tack it with hidden stitches.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Once all knitted pieces are attached, check the lamb’s balance and expression. Add tiny correction stitches where needed. The head should sit upright, the ears should angle outward, and the dress hem should curve evenly around the seated body.

Use black embroidery yarn for the final lashes and brows after the hood is attached. This helps you place the expression correctly inside the white face frame. Sew the cardigan buttons last so they line up neatly down the visible front edge.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if using safety eyes, wooden buttons, or fluffy yarn.
  • Press gently with a towel to remove moisture.
  • Air dry flat and reshape the hood, dress, ears, and purse while damp.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is firmly sewn to the body.
  • The hood frames the beige face evenly.
  • Both ears are placed at the same height.
  • The cardigan stripes are horizontal and sleeves are even.
  • The dress skirt flares softly over the seated legs.
  • The purse strap crosses from shoulder to opposite hip.
  • Buttons are secure on cardigan and shoes.
  • All yarn tails are woven in and hidden.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the lamb away from direct sunlight to protect the blue dress and cardigan stripes from fading. Keep it in a dry place, and avoid crushing the hood or ears under heavier items.

For long-term display, dust gently with a soft brush. If the fluffy hood becomes flat, lift the fibers carefully with your fingers. Do not pull hard on bouclé yarn, embroidered lashes, purse strap, or tiny flower petals.

If gifting to a young child, replace safety eyes and buttons with embroidered details. Check seams often, especially around the head, arms, shoes, and purse strap. A well-finished lamb should feel soft, secure, and ready for gentle handmade play or display.
