This cheerful crochet Road Runner is designed with a tall blue neck, bright yellow beak, expressive oval eyes, purple head feathers, a flower headband with ribbon ties, a sunny striped overall outfit, yellow sandals, a crossbody garden bag, a matching straw-style sun hat, and a little garden basket filled with cactus and colorful vegetables. The finished doll has long legs, slim arms, layered tail feathers, and a playful garden-helper look.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Overview
This pattern is written in US crochet terms and is worked mostly in continuous rounds. The doll is built as separate amigurumi pieces and then assembled carefully to match the image: long legs, rounded shorts, fitted bib overalls, narrow neck, rounded head, large eyes, side cheeks, wide beak, three purple crest feathers, layered blue tail feathers, sandals, hat, bag, flowers, cactus, and basket.
The finished doll is approximately 15 to 17 inches tall when made with sport or DK weight yarn and a 2.25 mm hook. The tall neck and long legs are lightly wired so the doll can sit on a bench with the legs hanging naturally, just like the sample image.
Skill Level
- Intermediate amigurumi
- Uses small parts, color changes, surface stitching, shaping, sewing, and optional wire support.
- Beginner crocheters can follow the pattern if they are comfortable with single crochet, increases, decreases, and sewing pieces together.
Finished Measurements
- Total height from sandal sole to top crest: about 16 inches
- Head width with cheeks: about 3.75 inches
- Neck length: about 4.5 inches
- Body length including shorts: about 4 inches
- Leg length from shorts to sandals: about 4.5 inches
- Large tail feather length: about 6.5 inches
- Sun hat diameter: about 5 inches
- Basket width: about 3.5 inches
Materials
- DK weight cotton or cotton-acrylic yarn in royal blue, sky blue, yellow, mustard, orange, purple, white, black, tan, beige, green, dark green, red, pink, and small scraps of turquoise.
- 2.25 mm crochet hook for the doll.
- 2.5 mm crochet hook for the hat, basket, and sandals.

Abbreviations
- MR = magic ring
- ch = chain
- st = stitch
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- inc = 2 sc in the same stitch
- dec = invisible single crochet decrease
- BLO = back loop only
- FLO = front loop only
- FO = fasten off
- R = round or row
Gauge
Gauge is important for a firm amigurumi finish. With a 2.25 mm hook and DK yarn, 8 single crochet stitches should measure about 1 inch across. Your stitches should be tight enough that stuffing does not show through. If your fabric has gaps, go down one hook size.
For the accessories, a slightly looser texture is acceptable. The basket and hat should still hold their shape, so do not crochet them too loosely. If needed, use a smaller hook for the hat brim and basket walls.
Color Placement Guide
- Royal blue: head, arms, sides of body, upper wings, and lower body accents.
- Sky blue: neck, tail feathers, stripes on shorts, and body contrast areas.
- Yellow: beak, cheeks, feet, overalls, hat, sandal straps, flower centers, and sun applique.
- Purple: three tall head feathers and small flower accent.
- White: large oval eyes.
- Orange: crossbody bag and sun stitching.
- Tan or beige: basket and optional hat trim.
- Green: cactus and vegetable leaves.

Important Construction Notes
The doll is crocheted in separate parts so the shape can match the image more closely. The legs are long and narrow, the body is rounded at the shorts, and the neck is tall and straight. Stuff the legs lightly, the body firmly, the neck very firmly, and the head medium-firm.
The eyes are large white ovals placed close together on the front of the head. The yellow beak sits below them and projects forward. The cheek pieces are added on both sides of the beak to create the smiling Road Runner face.
The overalls are worked directly over the body shape where possible, then straps and a bib are added. The shorts are striped in yellow and sky blue, matching the image. The bag strap crosses from one shoulder to the opposite hip.
Head
Use royal blue. Work in continuous rounds. Stuff gradually and shape the front slightly oval with your fingers as you work.

- Add the flower headband around the base of the crest.
Garden Accessories Placement
Place the yellow sun hat beside the doll, slightly tilted so the brim is visible. The garden basket should sit on the opposite side, with the handle standing upright and the tiny vegetables showing over the rim.
The cactus pot can sit next to the basket or be lightly sewn to the basket side if you want a single display piece. Arrange the cactus, red apple, purple eggplant, carrot, and squash so each color is visible from the front.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Check the doll from the front before making final knots. The head should be centered on the long neck, the beak should point forward, and both eyes should sit evenly above the beak. If one eye looks higher, adjust it before sewing the last stitches.
Add small shaping stitches if needed. A tiny stitch from the cheek to the head can lift the smile. A hidden stitch behind the head can pull the crest backward slightly. A few stitches behind the tail keep the feathers upright.
Use black embroidery thread to refine the smile. Keep the line thin and curved, not heavy. The expression should look friendly and cheerful. Add a tiny knot at the end of the smile for the playful cartoon-like finish.
Care Notes
- Spot clean only with a damp cloth and mild soap.
- Do not machine wash if the doll contains wire, buttons, cardboard, or plastic canvas.
- Let the doll air dry completely before storing.
- Keep away from direct sunlight for long periods to protect the bright yarn colors.
- If made for a child, remove wire, buttons, and small detachable accessories.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
To preserve the shape, dust the doll gently with a soft brush. For small stains, dab the area with cool water and mild soap, then press with a dry towel. Avoid rubbing the stitched details, especially the smile, flowers, bag applique, and tiny vegetables.
Store the doll upright or seated with the tail supported. Do not compress the crest feathers or the tail feathers under heavy objects. If the hat brim bends, reshape it gently with your fingers and let it rest flat overnight.
For long-term display, keep the doll in a dry place with good airflow. A clear display box works well because it protects the small flowers, basket vegetables, and embroidered details from dust while keeping the sunny garden outfit visible.
