Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US English knitting terms. The giraffe is worked mostly in the round using double-pointed needles or the magic loop method. Small flat pieces are worked back and forth, then seamed and shaped during assembly.

The doll is built from separate pieces so beginners can control the shape more easily. The head, muzzle, neck, body, arms, legs, ears, horns, dress, sandals, bag, hat, watering can, and basket are all made separately and joined at the end.

  • Finished height: about 15.5 in / 39 cm from sandal sole to horn tip when seated upright.
  • Seated height: about 12 in / 30.5 cm.
  • Main technique: stockinette in the round.
  • Skill level: confident beginner to intermediate.
  • Construction: knitted toy pieces, stuffed firmly, then sewn together.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in warm giraffe yellow, about 150 yd.
  • Worsted weight yarn in golden brown, about 65 yd.
  • Worsted weight yarn in tan beige, about 95 yd.
  • Small amounts of cream, white, mustard yellow, leaf green, pale yellow, pink, and soft gray.
  • US 3 / 3.25 mm double-pointed needles or circular needle for magic loop.
  • US 4 / 3.5 mm needles for dress fabric if you knit tightly.
  • Two 8 mm black safety eyes, or black yarn for embroidered eyes.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Six small tan or wooden buttons, about 6 to 8 mm.
  • Optional pipe cleaners or soft craft wire for neck support.
  • Small amount of cardboard or plastic canvas for the hat brim and sandal soles, optional.

Gauge

Gauge is important for a firm toy fabric. Work a small stockinette swatch in the round if possible.

  • Gauge: 6 stitches and 8 rounds = 1 in / 2.5 cm in stockinette.
  • If stuffing shows through, use smaller needles.
  • If your fabric is too stiff to shape, use needles one size larger.
  • The exact finished size may change slightly, but all pieces will stay proportional if the same yarn weight is used throughout.

Stuff the muzzle lightly at first. Pin it to the lower front of the head, covering about one third of the face. Add extra stuffing before closing the final inch of seam. The muzzle should project forward and downward, not sit flat.

Smile and Nostril Details

  • Using golden brown yarn, embroider two short nostril curves on the top front of the muzzle.
  • Use the same yarn to stitch a shallow smiling curve near the bottom edge.
  • Keep the smile subtle, about 1.25 in / 3 cm wide.
  • Pull the embroidery gently so the muzzle dimples slightly.

Patchwork Placement Guide

The dress looks most like the image when the front patches are balanced but not perfectly symmetrical. The handmade charm comes from small differences in each square.

  • Place one mustard patch at the upper front left and embroider a brown-centered flower.
  • Place one cream daisy patch at the upper front right.
  • Place one tan leafy patch near the center front.
  • Place one brown patch near the lower right front with a small yellow flower.
  • Place one cream patch near the lower left front with a white daisy and green leaves.
  • Add a large daisy over the lower front edge of the crossbody bag.

Seaming and Shaping Notes

Use mattress stitch for neat seams whenever possible. For tiny pieces, whipstitch is acceptable if you keep the stitches small and even. Always pin pieces in place before sewing so the giraffe keeps the correct expression and balance.

  • The neck should lean slightly forward, not stand perfectly vertical.
  • The head should tilt gently to one side for a friendly look.
  • The ears should angle outward like soft leaves.
  • The legs should hang below the skirt, with sandals visible.
  • The arms should rest over the front sides of the dress.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Sew the neck securely to the top of the body. Use several rounds of stitching so the head will not wobble.
  2. Sew the head to the top of the neck, tilting it slightly forward and to the left.
  3. Attach the muzzle to the lower front of the head. Add stuffing before closing the seam completely.
  4. Sew the white eye pads close together above the muzzle. Add black eyes or embroidered pupils.
  5. Attach ears and horns to the top and sides of the head.
  6. Sew brown spots along the neck and one side of the head.
  7. Attach arms and legs to the body before dressing the doll.
  8. Wrap the skirt around the body, sew the back seam, and secure the waistband.
  9. Sew the bib and crossed straps into place. Add small buttons at the strap bases.
  10. Add the bag strap diagonally across the body and secure the bag to the front skirt.
  11. Place daisies on the headband, bag, sandals, dress, and hat band.
  12. Use golden brown yarn to embroider nostrils and a small smile on the muzzle.

Check the face from the front before tying off any final threads. The eyes should sit high on the white pads, the muzzle should be rounded, and the smile should be soft rather than wide.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if using buttons, safety eyes, wire, or cardboard inserts.
  • Let the doll air dry flat on a towel.
  • Reshape the ears, muzzle, hat brim, and bag while damp.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Head is tilted gently and sewn firmly.
  • Neck is stuffed enough to stand tall.
  • Muzzle is rounded and centered.
  • Eye pads touch or slightly overlap.
  • Dress patches are decorated with small flowers and leaves.
  • Bag strap crosses the body diagonally.
  • Sandals show yellow toes and have daisy accents.
  • Hat, watering can, and basket are finished as matching garden props.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the giraffe in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Long sun exposure can fade the yellow body, brown spots, and embroidered flowers. If the doll is displayed on a shelf, gently dust it with a soft cloth or clean makeup brush.

For deeper cleaning, dab stained areas with a damp cloth rather than soaking the toy. Press with a dry towel to remove moisture, then let the piece dry naturally. Avoid twisting the neck, horns, ears, straps, or bag because small sewn parts can loosen over time.

If the doll will be gifted to a small child, replace buttons and safety eyes with secure embroidery. Check every seam, flower, strap, and accessory before gifting. For display use, the tiny buttons and garden props give the sweetest match to the photographed design.
