Knitting Tutorial: Seaside Puppy in Blue Striped Outfit – Free Knitting Pattern.

This sweet seaside puppy is knitted as a soft toy with a white face, black floppy ears, black eye patches, a blue and cream striped outfit, a red polka-dot neckerchief, blue sandals, a small brown shoulder bag with a seahorse detail, a matching blue bucket hat, a tiny surfboard, a starfish, and shell accents.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US English knitting terms and is designed to create a plush puppy close to the photographed style. The toy is worked mostly in the round using small needles to make a firm fabric that holds stuffing well. The body, outfit, limbs, head, ears, and accessories are made separately, then joined during final assembly.

The finished puppy has a rounded oversized head, long black floppy ears, a compact body, short arms, long white legs, and a seaside outfit with horizontal stripes. The hat and surfboard are separate props, so the display can be arranged exactly like the image.

Finished Size

  • Puppy height: about 10.5 in from top of head to bottom of sandals.
  • Head width: about 3.75 in across the cheeks when stuffed.
  • Body length: about 4.25 in from neck to shorts hem.
  • Hat width: about 4 in across brim.
  • Surfboard length: about 5.25 in.
  • Shoulder bag: about 1.25 in wide by 1.5 in tall.

Yarn and Materials

  • Sport weight yarn: white, black, medium denim blue, cream, red, brown, tan, peach, and a small amount of dark navy.
  • Needles: US 2 or 2.75 mm double-pointed needles, or size needed to obtain a tight toy fabric.
  • Optional smaller needles: US 1 or 2.25 mm for the bag strap, shell pieces, and facial details.
  • Safety eyes: two 8 mm glossy black eyes, or embroider eyes if making for a child under 3.
  • Safety nose: one 12 mm black oval nose, or embroider a satin-stitched nose.
  • Fiberfill: for firm but soft stuffing.
  • Tapestry needle: for sewing seams, weaving ends, and shaping.
  • Stitch markers: at least one marker for beginning of round.
  • Black embroidery floss: for mouth, toe lines, anchors, and paw details.
  • White embroidery floss: for bandana dots.

Gauge

Gauge: 28 stitches and 38 rounds = 4 in in stockinette stitch on US 2 needles. Gauge does not need to match perfectly, but the fabric must be tight enough that stuffing does not show through.

If your stitches are loose, move down a needle size. If your fabric is too stiff to shape, move up only slightly. A firm toy fabric gives the puppy the rounded head, smooth muzzle, and sturdy standing shape shown in the image.

Important Construction Notes

  • The puppy is knitted in separate pieces for best shaping.
  • Work body, head, arms, legs, muzzle, ears, hat crown, and sandals in the round unless stated otherwise.
  • Stuff gradually as you work, especially the head, body, and legs.
  • The striped outfit is knitted directly as part of the body and arms, not added afterward.
  • The shorts are made by dividing the lower body into two leg openings.
  • The red neckerchief, shoulder bag, bucket hat, surfboard, starfish, and shells are separate accessories.
  • Use mattress stitch or whipstitch with matching yarn for neat joins.

Color Plan for the Puppy

The head is mostly white with black patches around both eyes. The ears are solid black and long. The body outfit uses denim blue and cream horizontal stripes. The sleeves are striped, the shorts are blue with narrow cream bands, and the legs are white below the shorts. The sandals are denim blue with cream soles.

The red bandana sits under the chin and shows tiny white dots. The shoulder bag is brown with a tan seahorse applique and a thin brown crossbody strap. The matching bucket hat is blue with garter ridges around the brim and a small tan crab applique on the side.

  7. Break yarn, leaving a 16 in tail. Do not close the neck yet. This opening will be used to attach the head securely.

Divided Shorts and Leg Openings

The blue shorts in the image sit over the upper legs. To create that shape, knit two short tubes below the body. These tubes frame the white legs and keep the outfit looking like a one-piece seaside romper.

Right Shorts Leg

  1. Return to the CO edge of the body. With denim blue, pick up and knit 18 sts around one half of the lower body opening.
  2. Rnd 1: k all 18 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: cream, k all 18 sts.

  7. Rnd 6: p all 18 sts to form a neat cuff ridge.
  8. BO all sts loosely.

Left Shorts Leg

  1. Repeat the same instructions on the remaining 18 sts of the lower body opening.
  2. After both cuffs are finished, use the yarn tail to sew 2 or 3 sts at the center crotch so the shorts divide cleanly.

White Legs

The legs are long, straight, and white, emerging from the blue shorts. They are lightly ribbed by the natural tension of small-round knitting. Stuff them evenly so they stay cylindrical and balanced.

Make Two Legs

  1. With white, CO 18 sts. Divide over needles and join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1 to 4: k all 18 sts.
  3. Rnd 5: k4, m1R, k10, m1L, k4. 20 sts.

  7. Rnd 27: k2, k2tog around, ending k2. 14 sts.
  8. Rnd 28: k2tog around. 7 sts.
  9. Break yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull tight, and secure.

Stuff each leg from the cast-on edge. Keep the stuffing smooth. Sew the top of each leg inside one shorts opening. The legs should angle slightly outward, with the feet later pointing forward.

  2. Rows 1 to 14: k all 4 sts for garter stitch.
  3. BO, leaving a sewing tail.
  4. Sew one strap across the top of each white foot, from side to side.
  5. Sew one sole to the bottom of each foot. Curve the sole upward slightly at the toe.

Using black embroidery floss, stitch three short vertical toe lines on each white foot. Add one tiny curved black stitch near the outer side of each foot to match the paw detail in the picture.

Head

The head is rounded and larger than the body, with a white center face and black patches around the eyes. To keep the pattern manageable, knit the head in white, then add shaped black eye patches separately. This gives clean color placement and a soft handmade look.

Main White Head

  1. With white, CO 12 sts. Divide over needles and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all 12 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb in every st. 24 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: k all 24 sts.
  5. Rnd 4: k1, kfb around. 36 sts.

  14. Rnd 24: k all 48 sts.
  15. Rnd 25: k6, k2tog around. 42 sts.
  16. Rnd 26: k all 42 sts.
  17. Rnd 27: k5, k2tog around. 36 sts.
  18. Rnd 28: k all 36 sts.
  19. Rnd 29: k4, k2tog around. 30 sts.
  20. Rnd 30: k3, k2tog around. 24 sts.

Pause and stuff the head firmly. Shape the face so the forehead is round and the lower front is slightly fuller. Insert safety eyes later after positioning the black patches, or embroider eyes after all pieces are sewn.

  1. Rnd 31: k2, k2tog around. 18 sts.
  2. Rnd 32: k1, k2tog around. 12 sts.
  3. Break yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull closed, and secure.

Muzzle

The muzzle is a separate rounded oval sewn onto the lower front of the head. It should sit centered under the eyes and project gently outward, creating the puppy’s soft nose area.

  1. With white, CO 10 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all 10 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb in every st. 20 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: k all 20 sts.
  5. Rnd 4: k4, kfb, k10, kfb, k4. 22 sts.
  6. Rnds 5 to 8: k all 22 sts.
  7. Rnd 9: k4, k2tog, k10, ssk, k4. 20 sts.
  8. Rnd 10: k2, k2tog around. 15 sts.
  9. BO, leaving a long sewing tail.

Stuff the muzzle lightly, keeping it oval rather than round. Sew it to the lower center of the head. The top of the muzzle should begin just below the eye line, and the bottom should curve toward the neck.

Black Eye Patches

The puppy has two irregular black patches. They are tall and rounded, placed around the eyes, with soft organic edges. Knit them flat and sew them to the head before adding final eye highlights.

Left Eye Patch

  1. With black, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: k all 8 sts.
  3. Row 2: p all 8 sts.
  4. Row 3: k1, m1R, k6, m1L, k1. 10 sts.

Right Eye Patch

  1. Repeat the left eye patch, but when sewing, tilt the upper edge slightly inward toward the center forehead.
  2. Place the patches so a white strip remains down the middle of the face.
  3. Sew with small invisible stitches around the edge.

Attach or embroider the eyes on top of the black patches. Place each eye about 0.75 in above the muzzle and slightly toward the center. Add a tiny white embroidery highlight at the upper side of each eye if desired.

Nose and Mouth

  • Place the black oval nose at the upper center of the muzzle.
  • If using embroidery, satin stitch a rounded triangle about 0.5 in wide.
  • With black floss, stitch one short vertical line down from the nose.
  • Add a small soft curve under the vertical line for a gentle expression.
  • Keep the mouth minimal, because the image shows a simple, calm face.

Long Black Floppy Ears

The ears are long, black, soft, and slightly tapered. They hang from the sides of the head and reach down near the shoulders. Knit them flat in stockinette with a garter edge to reduce curling.

Make Two Ears

  1. With black, CO 12 sts.
  2. Row 1: k all 12 sts.
  3. Row 2: k2, p8, k2.
  4. Row 3: k all 12 sts.
  5. Row 4: k2, p8, k2.
  6. Row 5: k2, m1R, k8, m1L, k2. 14 sts.
  7. Row 6: k2, p10, k2.
  8. Rows 7 to 28: continue with k all RS rows and k2, p10, k2 on WS rows.
  9. Row 29: k2, ssk, k6, k2tog, k2. 12 sts.
  10. Row 30: k2, p8, k2.
  11. Row 31: k2, ssk, k4, k2tog, k2. 10 sts.
  12. Row 32: k2, p6, k2.
  13. Row 33: k1, ssk, k4, k2tog, k1. 8 sts.
  14. Row 34: k1, p6, k1.
  15. BO all sts.

Fold each ear slightly lengthwise and sew the top edge to the head at an angle. The ears should sit behind the eye patches, hang downward, and curve softly along the sides of the face.

Arms and Striped Sleeves

The arms are short and rounded. Each starts with a white paw, then changes into the blue and cream striped sweater sleeve. A small black paw mark is embroidered near the end.

Make Two Arms

  1. With white, CO 12 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all 12 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb in every st. 24 sts.
  4. Rnds 3 to 5: k all 24 sts.
  5. Rnd 6: k2, k2tog around. 18 sts.
  6. Rnd 7: k all 18 sts.
  7. Change to denim blue.
  8. Rnd 8: k all 18 sts.
  9. Rnd 9: cream, k all 18 sts.
  10. Rnd 10: cream, k all 18 sts.
  11. Rnd 11: denim blue, k all 18 sts.
  12. Rnd 12: denim blue, k all 18 sts.
  13. Rnd 13: cream, k all 18 sts.
  14. Rnd 14: cream, k all 18 sts.
  15. Rnd 15: denim blue, k all 18 sts.
  16. Rnd 16: denim blue, k all 18 sts.
  17. Rnd 17: k4, k2tog, k6, ssk, k4. 16 sts.
  18. Rnd 18: k all 16 sts.
  19. BO, leaving a long tail.

Stuff the paw firmly and the sleeve lightly. Sew the arms to the body just below the neck opening. Angle them downward so the white paws rest beside the striped outfit, as shown in the image.

Blue and Cream Chest Detail

The front of the outfit shows small dark anchor motifs and a tiny light blue oval patch. These are embroidered after the body is assembled. The details are small but important because they give the outfit its nautical style.

  • Left anchor: use dark navy floss. Stitch one vertical line over 3 knitted rows, one small horizontal bar, and two curved base stitches.
  • Right anchor: repeat the same motif on the opposite side of the sweater front.
  • Center oval: with light blue yarn or floss, satin stitch a small oval between the anchors, about 0.4 in wide.
  • Keep all motifs above the shorts line and below the red bandana.

Red Polka-Dot Bandana

The red bandana is triangular and sits around the neck like a small scarf. It should cover the join between head and body while adding the bright red detail visible in the photo.

Bandana Triangle

  1. With red, CO 3 sts.
  2. Row 1: k all 3 sts.
  3. Row 2: k1, m1R, k1, m1L, k1. 5 sts.
  4. Row 3: k all 5 sts.
  5. Row 4: k1, m1R, k3, m1L, k1. 7 sts.
  6. Row 5: k all 7 sts.
  7. Continue increasing 2 sts every even row until you have 25 sts.
  8. Knit 2 more rows even.
  9. BO loosely.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Bandana Ties

  1. With red, CO 4 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 26: k all 4 sts.
  3. BO. Make a second tie the same way.
  4. Sew one tie to each top corner of the triangle.

With white embroidery floss, add tiny French knots or small straight stitches across the red triangle. Space the dots irregularly, keeping them delicate. Wrap the bandana around the puppy’s neck and sew it in place under the ears.

Brown Crossbody Shoulder Bag

The small brown bag hangs diagonally across the sweater. It sits on the puppy’s right side and has a tiny seahorse applique on the front. Knit the bag flat, fold it, and add a long strap.

Bag Body

  1. With brown, CO 12 sts.
  2. Row 1: k all 12 sts.
  3. Row 2: p all 12 sts.
  4. Rows 3 to 18: continue stockinette.
  5. Row 19: k all 12 sts.
  6. Row 20: k all 12 sts to create a garter fold ridge.
  7. Rows 21 to 28: continue stockinette for the front flap.
  8. BO all sts.

Fold the lower 18 rows upward to form the bag pocket. Sew the side seams with brown yarn. Let the top flap fold over the front. Add two tiny vertical stitches at the lower corners to make the bag look softly rounded.

Bag Strap

  1. With brown, CO 3 sts.
  2. Knit every row until the strap measures 11 in.
  3. BO, leaving a long tail.
  4. Sew one end of the strap to the top left side of the bag and the other end to the top right side.

Seahorse Applique

  • With peach yarn or embroidery floss, stitch a tiny curved seahorse shape on the bag flap.
  • Make the body with a curved chain-style line.
  • Add a small head, a tiny snout, and two short back spikes.
  • Use one dark stitch for the eye.
  • Keep the applique centered and about 0.75 in tall.

Place the strap over the left shoulder and across the chest so the bag rests near the puppy’s right hip. Tack the strap at the shoulder and side so it does not slide.

Blue Bucket Hat

The bucket hat is a separate accessory placed beside the puppy in the display. It has a rounded crown, a ridged brim, and a small tan crab applique. Knit it in the round from the crown downward.

Hat Crown

  1. With denim blue, CO 8 sts. Divide over needles and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: kfb in every st. 16 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: k all 16 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: k1, kfb around. 24 sts.
  5. Rnd 4: k all 24 sts.
  6. Rnd 5: k2, kfb around. 32 sts.
  7. Rnd 6: k all 32 sts.
  8. Rnd 7: k3, kfb around. 40 sts.
  9. Rnd 8: k all 40 sts.

  4. Rnd 25: k3, m1R around. 64 sts.
  5. Rnd 26: k all 64 sts.
  6. Rnd 27: p all 64 sts.
  7. Rnd 28: k all 64 sts.
  8. Rnd 29: p all 64 sts.
  9. Rnd 30: k all 64 sts.
  10. Rnd 31: k6, m1R around, ending k4. 74 sts.
  11. Rnd 32: p all 74 sts.
  12. Rnd 33: k all 74 sts.
  13. BO loosely knitwise.

Weave in ends and gently shape the brim downward. Do not overstuff the hat. If you want it to hold its shape for display, place a very thin ring of firm thread inside the final brim edge and tack it invisibly.

Tiny Crab Applique for Hat

  • With tan yarn, make a small oval body by CO 5 sts, knitting 4 rows, then BO.
  • For each claw, use tan yarn to stitch a short stem and a split V shape.
  • For legs, add three tiny straight stitches on each side of the oval.
  • Add two dark eyes with embroidery floss.
  • Sew the crab to the front-right side of the hat brim area.

  2. Row 1: k3.
  3. Row 2: p3.
  4. Row 3: k1, k2tog. 2 sts.
  5. Row 4: p2.
  6. Row 5: k2tog. 1 st.
  7. Fasten off.
  8. Repeat on the remaining four sides, spacing arms evenly.

With tan yarn, stitch a few small raised dots in the center. Block gently with your fingers so the five arms spread out like a starfish.

Small Shell Accents

The image includes tiny shell details near the sandals. These can be knitted as small ridged ovals or embroidered directly onto the sandals. Make two shells for the outer sides of the sandals.

  1. With peach or tan yarn, CO 6 sts.
  2. Row 1: k all 6 sts.
  3. Row 2: p all 6 sts.
  4. Row 3: k1, k2tog, k2tog, k1. 4 sts.
  5. Row 4: p all 4 sts.
  6. BO all sts.
  7. Use the yarn tail to make three small vertical ridges across the shell.
  8. Sew one shell to the outside of each sandal strap.

Optional White Paw Patch Details

The paws show tiny black markings. Keep these simple and balanced. Overworking the embroidery can make the feet look heavy, so use short stitches and pull gently.

  • On each foot, stitch three toe lines from the top center toward the front.
  • On each hand paw, stitch one small black curved mark near the lower outside edge.
  • Hide embroidery knots inside the stuffing whenever possible.
  • Do not pull too tightly, or the paws will dent.

Joining the Head to the Body

The head is large, so it must be attached securely. Use the long tail from the body neck and additional white yarn if needed. Place the head so the muzzle faces forward and the ears fall symmetrically.

  1. Pin the head to the body before sewing.
  2. The bottom of the head should sit slightly inside the neck opening.
  3. Sew around the neck once with small stitches.
  4. Sew around a second time, catching both the body and lower head fabric.
  5. Add extra stuffing at the front neck if the head tilts downward.
  6. Cover the join with the red bandana.

Detailed Outfit Finishing

Check the sweater stripes before attaching accessories. The cream stripes should wrap around the body evenly. If a color jog appears at the back, hide it under the shoulder bag strap or position it slightly behind one arm.

  • Sew arms over the upper sweater sides at shoulder level.
  • Place the bandana first, then the bag strap over it if needed.
  • Attach the bag low enough that it rests over the shorts area.
  • Add anchors after the arms are sewn so the motifs remain centered.
  • Keep all embroidery ends hidden inside the body.

Facial Placement Guide

The puppy’s expression depends on careful placement. Before sewing permanently, pin the eye patches, muzzle, ears, and nose. View the head from the front and above. The white center strip should remain visible from forehead to muzzle.

  • Eye patches sit high on the face and curve beside the white forehead stripe.
  • Eyes sit on the lower half of each black patch.
  • The nose sits on the top third of the muzzle.
  • The ears attach behind the patches, not directly on the front face.
  • The mouth line stays short and centered.

How to Stuff for the Same Shape

Stuffing changes the final look of a knitted toy. For this puppy, the head should be full and smooth, the muzzle softly raised, the body compact, and the limbs slightly firm. Add stuffing in small pieces rather than one large clump.

  • Head: firm and round, with extra fullness at the cheeks.
  • Muzzle: lightly stuffed so it remains oval and gentle.
  • Body: firm enough to hold the head, but not stretched.
  • Legs: evenly stuffed from top to bottom.
  • Arms: paws firm, sleeves softer.
  • Feet: rounded and slightly flattened at the sole.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Sew the legs into the shorts openings, making sure both feet point forward.
  2. Sew the feet to the leg bottoms and attach the blue sandal soles and straps.
  3. Sew the head securely to the body and cover the seam with the red bandana.
  4. Sew the ears to the sides of the head, angled downward.
  5. Sew the arms to the upper body, with paws facing inward.
  6. Add the black eye patches, eyes, nose, mouth, and tiny highlights.
  7. Embroider the anchors and pale blue oval on the sweater front.
  8. Place the shoulder bag diagonally across the body and tack it in place.
  9. Add shells to the sandals and arrange the hat, surfboard, and starfish beside the puppy.

Care Notes

Spot clean the puppy with cool water and mild soap. Do not soak if safety eyes, a safety nose, or glued details are used. Press gently with a towel and allow the toy to air dry completely before storing or displaying.

  • Keep away from high heat and direct sunlight.
  • Reshape the hat brim by hand after cleaning.
  • Use a lint roller gently on dark ears if dust appears.
  • Check sewn accessories occasionally and reinforce loose stitches.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is centered and firmly attached.
  • The white face stripe remains visible between the black patches.
  • The ears hang evenly on both sides.
  • The blue and cream sweater stripes sit horizontally.
  • The bandana covers the neck seam neatly.
  • The bag strap crosses from shoulder to opposite hip.
  • The sandals include toe lines and shell accents.
  • The hat has a ridged brim and crab applique.
  • The surfboard has a cream body and blue center stripe.
  • The starfish is shaped with five clear arms.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For long-term display, keep the puppy in a dry place with good air circulation. Avoid plastic bags for storage because trapped moisture can affect yarn and stuffing. Wrap the toy loosely in acid-free tissue or clean cotton fabric if storing for a season.

To refresh the shape, gently massage the head, body, and feet with clean hands. If the brim of the hat curls too much, lightly steam near the brim without touching the yarn directly, then shape it with your fingers and let it dry flat.

For embroidered details, avoid scrubbing. Dab around the anchors, seahorse, crab, and shell accents with a damp cloth. Let every piece dry naturally. Once dry, check the bag strap, bandana ties, and ear seams so the puppy remains ready for display.
