This cheerful knit tuxedo cat is styled just like the photo: a black cat with a white face blaze, white muzzle, bright green eyes, a blue garden sweater with tiny embroidered fish and flowers, green striped pants, orange sandals, an orange crossbody bag, and a matching garden hat. Small knitted bee and ladybug accents sit on the head for a playful outdoor look.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Finished Size and Construction
This pattern makes a soft toy about 10.5 inches tall from the bottom of the sandals to the top of the ears, not including the bee. The cat is knitted in small shaped pieces, stuffed firmly, and sewn together. The outfit is worked separately so the sweater, pants, sandals, bag, and hat keep the same layered handmade look shown in the image.
The main cat body has a rounded head, a short soft neck, a compact torso, rounded arms, short legs, and a black tail with a white tip. The sweater is fitted over the body with a ribbed collar and cuffs. The pants are green with narrow horizontal stripes. Decorative embroidery is added last so the tiny garden details stay crisp.
Skill Level
- Level: Confident beginner to intermediate.
- Main skills used: knit, purl, increases, decreases, knitting in the round, basic seaming, mattress stitch, duplicate stitch, simple embroidery, and small-piece assembly.
- Best method: Work the toy pieces in the round on double-pointed needles or magic loop. Some accessories are knitted flat for easier shaping.
Materials
- Worsted weight yarn in black for head, body areas, ears, and tail.
- Worsted weight yarn in white for muzzle, blaze, paws, foot tops, and tail tip.
- Worsted weight yarn in sky blue for the garden sweater.
- Worsted weight yarn in light green and darker green for the striped pants.
- Worsted weight yarn in orange for sandals, bag, strap, and hat.
- Small amounts of yellow and black for the bee.
- Small amounts of red and black for the ladybug.
- Small amounts of pink for nose and mouth embroidery.
- Small amounts of green, yellow, lavender, red, and cream for sweater flowers, leaves, stems, and fish motifs.
- Small amounts of blue, pink, green, and yellow for the flowers on the hat.
- US size 3 needles, 3.25 mm, for a firm stuffed fabric.
- US size 2 needles, 2.75 mm, for small accessories if you want tighter pieces.
- Pair of 12 mm green safety eyes, or black safety eyes with green felt circles behind them.
- Fiberfill stuffing.
- Tapestry needle.
- Six long white whisker strands, embroidery floss, nylon thread, or fine cotton.
- Two tiny decorative charms if desired: one leaf charm for the bag and one flower bead for a sandal. These are optional and should be omitted for children under three.
- Stitch markers, pins, scissors, and a row counter.
Gauge
Using US size 3 needles in stockinette stitch, aim for 6 stitches and 8 rounds per inch. Gauge is important because the cat needs a dense fabric that will not show stuffing. If your stitches are loose, go down a needle size. If the fabric feels stiff and hard to shape, go up slightly.
- Head width after stuffing: about 4 inches.
- Body width with sweater: about 3.5 inches.
- Leg length with pants: about 2.75 inches.
- Arm length: about 3 inches.
- Hat brim width: about 4.75 inches across.
- Bag size: about 1.75 inches wide and 2 inches tall.

Important Pattern Notes
Work tightly and stuff gradually. The cat in the photo has a plump, rounded toy shape rather than a flat doll shape. Firm stuffing helps the head stay round, the muzzle sit forward, and the legs support the sandals neatly.

For the cleanest finish, leave long yarn tails on each small piece. These tails are used for sewing. Pin all pieces before stitching so you can check the tuxedo face, sweater placement, pants height, and angle of the accessories.
- Seaming angle for arms: attach each arm slightly downward, about 35 degrees from the shoulder line.
- Seaming angle for ears: attach ears at the upper left and upper right corners of the head, leaning outward slightly.
- Tail angle: attach at the back right lower body, curving outward and then sideways like the photo.
- Bag strap angle: run the strap from the cat’s left shoulder across the front to the right hip.
- Hat position: the hat is separate and sits beside the cat in the photo, so knit it as a removable prop.
Main Cat Head
The head is worked in black from the lower face upward. The white muzzle and blaze are made separately and sewn on so the tuxedo markings stay clean and centered.

Facial Features
The face is what gives this tuxedo cat its sweet expression. Take time here. The green eyes are large, glossy, and placed evenly on each side of the white blaze.
- Pin the white blaze vertically down the front center of the head. The lower wide part should touch the top of the muzzle area.
- Sew the blaze with small white whipstitches, keeping the edges smooth.
- Place the white muzzle below the eyes, centered over the lower face. Lightly stuff it before closing the final edge.
- Install or sew the green eyes on either side of the blaze, about 7 stitches apart. The eyes should sit slightly above the top curve of the muzzle.
- With pink yarn, embroider a small triangle nose at the top center of the muzzle.
- Work one pink vertical stitch down from the nose, then two curved mouth stitches forming a soft cat smile.
- For whiskers, insert three long white strands on each side of the muzzle. Keep them thin and slightly curved outward.
- Secure whisker ends inside the head with small knots and a dab of fabric-safe glue if the toy is decorative only.
Assembly Order
Assemble in a careful order so the outfit layers correctly. The pants go on before the sweater. The sweater covers the upper waistband slightly, and the crossbody bag sits over the sweater.
- Sew the head to the body using the long body tail. Match the center of the face to the center of the torso.
- Slide the striped pants onto the lower body. Position the waistband just below the sweater line and tack in place at the back.
- Attach the white feet below the pant legs. The toes should point forward and slightly outward.
- Sew orange sandal soles under the white feet. Add the straps across the top of each foot.
- Slide the blue sweater body over the torso from the neck downward. Align the armholes at the shoulders.
- Attach the arms through the sweater armhole area, angling them gently downward.
- Secure the sweater hem so it sits above the striped pants without covering too much of the green stripes.
- Sew the black ears to the top corners of the head, leaning each ear outward.
- Sew the tail to the back lower right side, letting the white tip show beside the body.
- Place the orange bag at the cat’s right hip and lay the strap diagonally across the sweater. Tack the strap at the left shoulder and the bag corner.
- Sew the bee and ladybug to the top of the head as shown.
- Set the orange hat beside the cat or tack it lightly near one arm if you want it attached as a display prop.
Detailed Sweater Motif Placement
Use the sweater hem as your guide. The floral garden border should sit above the ribbed hem, spreading across the lower front. Do not place the embroidery too high because the fish motifs need open space on the chest.
- Place the green fish on the lower left front of the sweater, about 4 knitted rows above the flowers.
- Place the orange fish on the upper right chest, angled slightly upward.
- Work tall green stems between the fish motifs and the hem.
- Add tiny orange and yellow dots near the sleeve cuffs to echo the small flower details in the image.
- Use only one or two stitches for each tiny bud so the sweater does not become crowded.
Fit Adjustments
If your sweater feels tight over the stuffed body, block it lightly before sewing the arms. You can also add 4 extra stitches to the sweater cast-on and work the body with 48 stitches instead of 44. Keep the same armhole spacing by adding 2 stitches to the front and 2 stitches to the back.
If your pants are too loose, thread a strand of light green yarn through the inside of the waistband and gently cinch it at the back. Tie securely, weave in the ends, and smooth the waistband under the sweater.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Check the cat from the front before fastening every final thread. The eyes should be level, the white blaze should be centered, and the muzzle should be softly rounded. Add one extra shaping stitch under each cheek if the muzzle looks too flat.
Trim the whiskers evenly, but keep them long enough to extend beyond the face. Make sure the bee, ladybug, bag, sandals, and hat flowers are sewn securely. Hide all yarn tails inside the toy or weave them under matching stitches.
Care Notes
- Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
- Do not machine wash if you used safety eyes, charms, beads, or delicate embroidery.
- Press out moisture with a towel instead of twisting the toy.
- Let the cat air dry flat in a shaded place.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The head is round and firmly stuffed.
- The white blaze sits straight between the eyes.
- The muzzle has two softly shaped cheeks.
- The blue sweater shows flowers, stems, and two fish motifs.
- The green pants have clear horizontal stripes.
- The orange bag crosses from left shoulder to right hip.
- The sandals frame the white feet neatly.
- The bee is on the upper left head and the ladybug is on the upper right head.
- The orange hat has a raised brim and small flowers on one side.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Store the finished cat away from direct sunlight to protect the black, blue, green, and orange yarn colors. If the toy is for display, keep it in a dry area and gently dust it with a soft brush. Avoid pulling the embroidery, whiskers, bee wings, or hat flowers.
For long-term storage, wrap the cat loosely in acid-free tissue or a clean cotton cloth. Do not compress the ears, muzzle, hat brim, or bag strap. Reshape the body and accessories by hand after storage so the toy keeps the same charming garden outfit silhouette.
