Crochet Tutorial: Taz Tasmanian Devil Summer Doll – Free Crochet Pattern

This cheerful summer amigurumi doll features a brown Tasmanian devil-style character wearing red and white striped sleeves, blue overall shorts, brown sandals with green leaf accents, and a yellow crossbody carrot bag. The set also includes a round brown sunhat with a blue ribbon, tiny flowers, bees, a picnic basket with gingham cloth, and a small watermelon slice.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Notes

This pattern is written in US crochet terms. The doll is worked mostly in continuous spiral rounds, so do not join unless the round specifically says to join. Use a stitch marker in the first stitch of every round to keep your count accurate.

The finished doll is designed with a large expressive head, a compact body, long curved arms, short legs, and oversized facial shaping. The overalls, shirt stripes, bag, hat, basket, and watermelon are made separately or color-changed directly into the doll to match the photographed design.

Finished Size

  • Main doll: about 11 to 12 inches tall using sport or DK weight yarn and a 2.5 mm hook.
  • Hat: about 4.75 inches wide across the brim.
  • Bag: about 1.75 inches wide.
  • Basket: about 2 inches wide.
  • Watermelon slice: about 2 inches wide.

Materials

  • DK or sport weight cotton yarn in dark brown, tan, black, white, red, blue, yellow, orange, green, pink, cream, and small amounts of flower colors.
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook for the doll and accessories.
  • 2.0 mm crochet hook for tiny details, flowers, bees, carrot, and stitching accents.
  • Safety eyes, 6 mm, or black beads for the angry eyes.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Straight pins for positioning parts.
  • Black embroidery thread for mouth and facial lines.
  • Optional craft wire for poseable arms, wrapped securely and used only for display dolls.

Abbreviations

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • st: stitch
  • R: round or row
  • FO: fasten off

Gauge and Tension

For the neat tight texture shown in the image, crochet firmly enough that stuffing does not show through the stitches. A gauge of about 7 sc and 8 rounds per inch gives the right size and shape. If your doll looks loose, switch to a smaller hook.

The head should be visibly wider than the body. The muzzle is broad and puffy, the arms are long and slim, and the legs are short. Stuff the head firmly, the body medium-firm, and the arms lightly so they hang naturally.

Color Placement Overview

  • Dark brown: head, arms, legs, ears, hair tufts, hands, feet, hat, and outer body areas.
  • Tan: muzzle, cheeks, lower face, inner ears, sandal soles, and basket.
  • Red and white: striped short sleeves and shirt area.
  • Blue: overalls, straps, pocket, hat ribbon, and bow.
  • Yellow: bag, strap, stitch accents, and flower centers.
  • Black: brows, nose, mouth line, bee stripes, and eye outlines.

Head

Work the head in dark brown. This head is round but slightly wider at the cheek line, so the increases are concentrated early and the middle rounds are held even. Stuff firmly as you go, especially around the lower face area.

Do not close the head yet. Leave the opening for attaching to the body. Add extra stuffing to the front lower half so the muzzle will sit on a full, rounded face rather than a flat surface.

Body With Shirt and Overall Shorts

The body begins in blue for the overall shorts, changes to red and white for the striped shirt, then finishes with dark brown at the neck. The body is shorter than the head, giving the doll the cute top-heavy proportion visible in the image.

Stuff the body firmly at the lower blue section and medium-firm through the shirt. FO, leaving a long tail for sewing. The body should fit into the 18-st opening of the head with the neck slightly tucked upward.

Overall Bib

The bib sits on the front of the red and white shirt and covers the middle chest. Use blue yarn. Work in rows and leave a long tail to sew around the edge.

  1. Row 1: ch 13, sc in second ch from hook and across. 12 sts.
  2. Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. 12 sts.
  3. Row 3: ch 1, turn, dec, sc 8, dec. 10 sts.
  4. Row 4 to Row 7: ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. 10 sts.
  5. Row 8: ch 1, turn, dec, sc 6, dec. 8 sts.

FO with a long tail. Sew the bib to the front center of the body from R11 to R19. Use yellow yarn to embroider tiny running stitches around the bib, copying the visible yellow seam accents in the image.

Overall Shorts Cuffs

The short legs of the overalls need a lower edge line. Make two cuffs in blue. These are sewn around the top of the brown legs after the legs are attached.

  1. For each cuff: ch 18, join with sl st to form a ring.
  2. R1: ch 1, sc 18 around, join with sl st.
  3. R2: ch 1, BLO sc 18 around, join with sl st.

FO and leave a sewing tail. Embroider a yellow dashed seam around the lower edge of each cuff after sewing it to the doll.

Overall Straps

The doll has two blue shoulder straps crossing over the red and white shirt. The front view shows the straps rising from the bib toward the shoulders.

  1. Strap 1: With blue, ch 24, sc in second ch from hook and across. 23 sts.
  2. Strap 2: Repeat the same steps for a second strap.

Sew one end of each strap to the upper corners of the bib. Bring the straps over the shoulders and sew them to the back waistband. Add one small yellow stitch at each front strap base to imitate the little button details.

Front Overall Pocket

  1. With blue, ch 9.
  2. Row 1: sc in second ch from hook and across. 8 sts.
  3. Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. 8 sts.
  4. Row 3: ch 1, turn, dec, sc 4, dec. 6 sts.
  5. Row 4: ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. 6 sts.

FO and sew the pocket to the center of the bib. With yellow yarn, embroider a small curved stitch line around the pocket edge and three tiny vertical stitch marks near the top, matching the decorative stitching shown on the overalls.

Side Pockets

  • Make 2 in blue.
  • ch 8, sc in second ch from hook and across. 7 sts.
  • Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc 7.
  • Row 3: ch 1, turn, dec, sc 3, dec. 5 sts.

FO and sew one pocket to each side of the shorts. Use yellow yarn to add a curved pocket line on the outside edge. Keep these pockets low and slightly angled, as seen on the doll’s blue shorts.

Legs

Make two legs in dark brown. The legs are short and sturdy, with the feet covered by sandal pieces later. Stuff the lower half firmly and the upper half lightly.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: sc 1, inc, repeat around. 18 sts.
  4. R4: BLO sc in each st around. 18 sts.

  6. R8: sc 4, dec, repeat around. 15 sts.
  7. R9 to R14: sc in each st around. 15 sts.

FO, leaving long tails. Sew the legs to the bottom of the blue body, spaced with a narrow gap between them. The legs should angle slightly outward so the doll stands with a playful stance.

Feet and Toes

The toes are rounded bumps sewn to the front of each foot. Make three toes per foot in dark brown, six total.

  1. R1: 5 sc in MR. 5 sts.
  2. R2: inc in each st around. 10 sts.
  3. R3: sc in each st around. 10 sts.
  4. R4: dec around. 5 sts.

FO and close each toe. Sew three toes across the front of each lower leg. The center toe should sit slightly forward, with the side toes angled outward.

Arms

Make two long arms in dark brown. The arms in the image are slim, curved, and extend out from the striped sleeves. Do not overstuff them, or they will lose the soft drooping shape.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: sc 1, inc, repeat around. 9 sts.
  3. R3 to R7: sc in each st around. 9 sts.

  6. R23: sc 2, dec, repeat around. 9 sts.
  7. R24 to R25: sc in each st around. 9 sts.

Stuff the hands lightly and the upper arms very lightly. Flatten the top opening and crochet through both layers with 4 sc to close. FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Hands and Fingers

Each hand has long pointed fingers. Make three fingers per hand. Attach them to the lower end of each arm so they fan outward like the image.

  1. For each finger: ch 7.
  2. sc in second ch from hook, sc 5 across. 6 sts.
  3. FO, leaving a tail.

Sew three fingers to each hand. Place the center finger straight downward, then angle the outer fingers slightly left and right. Use a yarn needle to pull the tails into the hand securely.

Striped Sleeves

The sleeves sit at the shoulders between the brown arms and body. They are red and white rings with a slightly puffed look.

  1. Make 2 sleeves. With red, ch 18, join with sl st to form a ring.
  2. R1: ch 1, sc 18 around, join.
  3. R2: Change to white, ch 1, sc 18 around, join.
  4. R3: Change to red, ch 1, sc 18 around, join.
  5. R4: Change to white, ch 1, sc 18 around, join.
  6. R5: Change to red, ch 1, sc 18 around, join.

Slide one sleeve over the top of each arm. Sew the sleeve edge to the arm, then sew the entire arm to the side of the body at R18 to R21. Angle both arms outward and slightly downward.

Muzzle and Cheeks

The tan muzzle is one of the most important features. It is wide, raised, and covers the lower front of the head. Make two cheek domes and a center muzzle bridge, then sew them together onto the face.

Left and Right Cheek Domes

  1. Make 2 in tan.
  2. R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  3. R2: inc in each st around. 12 sts.

  6. R5 to R7: sc in each st around. 24 sts.
  7. R8: sc 2, dec, repeat around. 18 sts.

FO with long tails. Stuff the cheeks firmly. Sew them side by side on the lower front of the head, centered between R16 and R25. The cheeks should touch in the middle and push outward to create the broad face.

Center Muzzle Bridge

  1. With tan, ch 9.
  2. Row 1: sc in second ch from hook and across. 8 sts.
  3. Row 2: ch 1, turn, inc, sc 6, inc. 10 sts.
  4. Row 3 to Row 5: ch 1, turn, sc across. 10 sts.
  5. Row 6: ch 1, turn, dec, sc 6, dec. 8 sts.

FO with a long tail. Lightly stuff behind this piece as you sew it vertically between the cheek domes. The upper edge should sit directly below the black nose.

Lower Chin

The lower tan chin is a small oval below the cheeks. It makes the mouth area more dimensional and helps the white fangs stand out.

  1. With tan, 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: sc 1, inc, repeat around. 18 sts.
  4. R4 to R5: sc in each st around. 18 sts.
  5. R6: sc 1, dec, repeat around. 12 sts.

Stuff lightly and sew under the two cheeks, centered at the bottom of the muzzle. Embroider a short black vertical mouth line from the bottom of the nose down to the top of this chin.

Nose

The nose is black, oval, and raised. It sits at the center top of the tan muzzle, slightly overlapping the cheek domes.

  1. With black, ch 6.
  2. R1: sc in second ch from hook, sc 3, 3 sc in last ch, work along other side of chain, sc 3, inc in last st. 12 sts.
  3. R2: inc, sc 3, inc 3 times, sc 3, inc 2 times. 18 sts.
  4. R3: sc in each st around. 18 sts.
  5. R4: sc 1, dec, repeat around. 12 sts.

Stuff lightly. Sew the nose firmly across the upper center of the muzzle. Add a few horizontal black stitches across the front if you want a denser, smoother nose surface.

Eyes

The eyes are white, slanted, and sharply angled under the black brow. Make two white eye patches. They should touch near the center but angle upward toward the sides for the intense expression.

  1. Make 2 in white. ch 8.
  2. Row 1: sc in second ch from hook, hdc 2, dc 2, hdc 1, sc 1. 7 sts.
  3. Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc 1, hdc 1, dc 2, hdc 2, sc 1. 7 sts.
  4. Row 3: ch 1, turn, sl st 1, sc 1, hdc 3, sc 1, sl st 1. 7 sts.

FO with long tails. Sew the eyes to the face above the nose, between R11 and R16. Place the inner points close together. Add one 6 mm safety eye or black bead to each white patch, close to the center.

Black Angry Brow Outline

The brow is a thick black V-shaped piece framing the top and outer sides of both eyes. It gives the doll the strong comic expression shown in the photo.

  1. With black, ch 31.
  2. Starting in second ch from hook, sc 30 across.
  3. FO, leaving a long tail.

Pin the chain above the eyes in a deep V shape. The center point should dip between the eyes, and the outer ends should curve down around the outside corners. Sew it down with tiny stitches.

For a thicker brow, crochet a second identical black strip and sew it directly over the first one. This creates the raised heavy eyebrow ridge visible in the image.

Fangs

Make two white fangs. They hang from the lower edge of the tan muzzle, one on each side of the black mouth line.

  1. With white, ch 5.
  2. sc in second ch from hook, hdc 1, dc 1, sl st 1.
  3. FO, leaving a tail.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Sew one fang to the lower left cheek and one to the lower right cheek. Angle the points slightly inward. Keep them small and bright so they are noticeable without covering the chin.

Ears

The ears are round brown outer circles with pink inner circles. They sit low on the sides of the head, slightly behind the eyes.

Outer Ears

  1. Make 2 in dark brown.
  2. R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  3. R2: inc in each st around. 12 sts.

  • Tuft 3: ch 7, sc in second ch from hook, sc 5. FO.
  • Tuft 4: ch 6, sc in second ch from hook, sc 4. FO.

Sew the tufts to the top center of the head. Curve them forward and sideways as you stitch, leaving the tips slightly free so they look like soft messy hair.

Small Head Flowers

The photographed doll has small flowers near the ears. Make one red flower with yellow center and one orange flower with yellow center, then add tiny green leaves.

Five-Petal Flower

  1. With flower color, make MR.
  2. Into MR: ch 2, dc 2, ch 2, sl st. Repeat 5 times.

Sandals

The sandals have tan soles, dark brown straps, and tiny green leaf decorations on top. Make two soles and two sets of straps.

Soles

  1. Make 2 in tan. ch 9.
  2. R1: sc in second ch from hook, sc 6, 3 sc in last ch, work along other side, sc 6, inc. 18 sts.

Brown Sandal Straps

  • For each sandal, ch 12, sc in second ch from hook and across. 11 sts.
  • Make a second shorter strap: ch 8, sc in second ch from hook and across. 7 sts.

Sew the long strap across the front of the foot above the toes. Sew the short strap lengthwise from the front center toward the ankle. Use dark brown so the strap blends with the foot but still creates texture.

Green Leaf Accents

  • For each leaf, ch 5.
  • sl st in second ch from hook, sc 1, hdc 1, sl st 1.
  • Make 4 leaves total and sew 2 to each sandal.

FO and weave in ends. Embroider 4 or 5 tiny black seed stitches on the red section. Curve the piece slightly with your fingers so it resembles the watermelon wedge in the image.

Facial Embroidery and Expression

The expression depends on strong placement. The eyes must be close together, the brows must angle downward in the middle, and the nose must sit firmly above the tan cheeks. Pin every facial part first before sewing permanently.

  • Place the eyes between R11 and R16 of the head.
  • Place the nose across the upper muzzle, centered below the inner eye points.
  • Place the cheek domes from R16 to R25.
  • Place the lower chin directly under the cheek domes.
  • Add the black mouth line from nose to chin.
  • Add fangs on the lower left and lower right edges of the muzzle.

Assembly Order

  1. Sew the head to the body, keeping the face centered over the overall bib.
  2. Sew the legs to the bottom of the body and attach the blue cuffs.
  3. Add feet, toes, sandal soles, straps, and green leaf accents.
  4. Sew the sleeves to the arms, then sew the arms to the body.
  5. Sew the muzzle, cheeks, chin, nose, eyes, brows, fangs, and ears to the head.
  6. Add hair tufts and flower decorations near the ears.
  7. Sew the overall bib, straps, pocket, side pockets, and yellow stitch details.
  8. Add the crossbody bag and tack the strap diagonally across the body.
  9. Make the sunhat, bow, bees, basket, cloth, and watermelon slice.

Yellow Stitch Details

The yellow embroidery is small but important. Use short straight stitches along the overall edges, bib, pockets, cuffs, and strap bases. Keep each stitch about one crochet stitch wide and space them evenly for the handmade denim effect.

  • Add a dashed yellow line around the bib.
  • Add a dashed line around the front pocket.
  • Add curved yellow lines on both side pockets.
  • Add two small yellow button stitches at the bib strap corners.
  • Add dashed yellow lines around the shorts cuffs.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

After all pieces are attached, check the doll from the front, sides, and top. The head should be large and centered, the arms should angle outward, and the hat should sit beside the doll or gently on the head without hiding the flowers.

Use black thread to refine the mouth line, deepen the brow angle, and secure the fangs. Trim loose yarn tails carefully. Shape the cheeks by gently pressing them outward with your fingers.

Care Notes

Spot clean the doll with cool water and mild soap. Avoid soaking if you used safety eyes, embroidery, felt support, or cardboard inside the basket. Let every piece air dry completely before storing.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Large brown head is firmly stuffed and securely sewn.
  • Tan muzzle is wide, raised, and centered.
  • White eyes are slanted with black angry brow above them.
  • Blue overalls have bib, straps, pockets, and yellow stitching.
  • Red and white sleeves are even on both sides.
  • Yellow carrot bag hangs diagonally across the body.
  • Sandals include tan soles, brown straps, and green leaves.
  • Hat includes brim, blue band, bow, flowers, and bee details.
  • Basket has handle and red-white cloth.
  • Watermelon has green rind, white stripe, red center, and black seeds.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the doll in a dry place away from direct sunlight to protect the brown, red, blue, and yellow yarn colors. If dust appears, use a soft brush and gently clean around the face, flowers, hat brim, and bag details.

For long-term display, keep the doll upright with light support behind the body. Avoid pulling the arms, bag strap, hat decorations, or basket handle. These small handmade parts are decorative and should be handled gently.

If gifting to a child, replace beads or safety eyes with embroidered eyes and remove any wire or rigid support. Always secure every small flower, bee, fang, and accessory with strong repeated stitches before use.
