Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US English knitting terms and is designed to recreate the pictured strawberry mouse doll as closely as possible. The doll is worked mostly in small pieces, then stuffed, shaped, and seamed carefully to create the rounded head, soft body, tiny limbs, large ears, accessories, and embroidered details.

The mouse has a large rounded head, a smaller dressed body, short arms, narrow legs, a soft pink tail, and large circular ears. The outfit is knitted separately in the same soft miniature style. Small embroidery and careful placement are essential for the gentle expression shown in the photo.

  • Finished height: about 8.5 in to 9 in seated, not including ears
  • Skill level: advanced beginner to intermediate
  • Construction: knitted flat and seamed, with a few optional small pieces worked in the round
  • Main texture: stockinette stitch with firm stuffing
  • Best use: decorative handmade doll or gentle keepsake

Materials

  • DK weight yarn in soft cream for head, body, arms, legs, and outer ears
  • DK weight yarn in pale pink for inner ears, nose, blush accents, and tail
  • DK weight yarn in sky blue for dress stripes, straps, and trim
  • DK weight yarn in warm tan for bag, basket, sandals, and hat details
  • Small amounts of red, green, yellow, white, lavender, and rose embroidery yarn
  • US 2.5 or US 3 knitting needles, or size needed for a tight fabric
  • Two 10 mm to 12 mm dark safety eyes or black glossy buttons
  • Polyester fiberfill
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch markers
  • Two tiny tan buttons for dress straps
  • Optional two tiny white flower buttons for sandals
  • Pink powder blush or pink yarn for cheek embroidery

Gauge

Work at a firm gauge so stuffing does not show through the knitted fabric. The sample gauge is approximately 7 stitches and 10 rows per inch in stockinette stitch using DK yarn and US 2.5 or US 3 needles.

If your stitches are loose, go down a needle size. If the fabric feels too stiff to shape, go up slightly. The exact gauge is less important than creating a dense fabric that holds stuffing smoothly.

Important Notes Before You Begin

  • The head is intentionally large compared with the body, matching the plush storybook shape in the photo.
  • The ears sit high and wide on the head, tilted slightly outward.
  • The dress is fitted around the body and has a fuller striped skirt.
  • All embroidered flowers are added after knitting and assembly.

Main Mouse Head

The head is large, round, and slightly wider near the lower cheeks. Work this piece flat in cream yarn. Seam up the back after stuffing. The face side should be smooth stockinette.

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull snugly. Seam the back of the head from top toward the lower opening, leaving space for stuffing. Stuff firmly, shaping the cheeks full and rounded. Close the lower back seam securely.

Muzzle and Cheek Pad

The mouse has a soft protruding muzzle area, not a sharp snout. This piece sits low on the face and helps create the gentle puffy cheek shape seen in the image.

  1. CO 8 sts in cream.
  2. Row 1 WS: purl all sts.
  3. Row 2 RS: kfb, k6, kfb. 10 sts.

  8. Row 11: purl all sts.
  9. Row 12: k2tog, k6, ssk. 8 sts.
  10. BO all sts.

Lightly stuff the muzzle before sewing. Position it centered on the lower front of the head, with the top edge about halfway between the eye line and the bottom of the head. Sew around the edge using small mattress stitches, keeping the center softly raised.

Eye Patches

The photo shows subtle cream eye rings around the dark eyes. These are not strong color patches; they are soft raised knitted circles in the same cream yarn, giving the eyes a framed, plush look.

  1. Make 2. CO 6 sts in cream.
  2. Row 1 WS: purl all sts.
  3. Row 2 RS: kfb in every st. 12 sts.

  9. BO loosely.

Shape each piece into a small oval circle. Sew one eye patch on each side of the upper muzzle area. Leave about 5 stitches between the inner edges. Insert or sew the dark eyes into the center of each patch before final tightening.

Pink Nose

The nose is a small rounded oval in pale pink, placed at the top center of the muzzle. It should sit between the lower edges of the eye patches.

  1. CO 5 sts in pale pink.
  2. Row 1 WS: purl all sts.
  3. Row 2 RS: kfb, k3, kfb. 7 sts.

  6. BO all sts.

Thread the yarn tail around the edge of the nose and pull slightly to cup the piece. Add a tiny pinch of stuffing or yarn scraps behind it. Sew to the center of the muzzle with the widest part horizontal.

Large Outer Ears

The ears are large round mouse ears and one of the most important features. They sit high on the head, with cream outer rims and soft pink centers. Make the outer ears first.

Sew each pink inner ear onto a cream outer ear, centering it and leaving a visible cream border around the edge. Use pale pink yarn and small stitches. The inner ear should lie flat, while the cream edge remains slightly rounded.

Body

The body is shorter and smaller than the head. It is cream underneath, but most of it will be covered by the dress. Make the torso firm enough to hold the head and outfit.

  1. CO 12 sts in cream.
  2. Row 1 WS: purl all sts.
  3. Row 2 RS: kfb in every st. 24 sts.
  4. Row 3: purl all sts.

Seam the body at the back. Stuff firmly, keeping the bottom rounded and the neck slightly narrower. The finished body should look like a small pear shape. Sew the top opening closed flat so the head can sit securely.

Legs

The legs are short, cream, and narrow. The feet are small ovals that point forward under the skirt. Make two identical legs.

  1. CO 8 sts in cream.
  2. Row 1 WS: purl all sts.
  3. Row 2 RS: kfb, k6, kfb. 10 sts.

Fold each leg lengthwise with the right side out. Seam the back and bottom, stuffing lightly. The legs should remain soft and bendable so the mouse can sit on a shelf or table edge.

Feet

  1. Make 2. CO 6 sts in cream.
  2. Row 1 WS: purl all sts.
  3. Row 2 RS: kfb, k4, kfb. 8 sts.

  8. Row 9: purl all sts.
  9. Row 10: k2tog, k4, ssk. 6 sts.
  10. BO all sts.

Stuff each foot lightly and sew one to the bottom front of each leg. Angle the feet forward. Later, the tan sandals will wrap around these feet and should remain visible beneath the skirt.

Arms

The arms are small, simple, and rounded. They hang along the sides of the dress, with the ends slightly puffy like tiny paws.

  1. Make 2. CO 7 sts in cream.
  2. Row 1 WS: purl all sts.
  3. Row 2 RS: kfb, k5, kfb. 9 sts.
  4. Rows 3 to 15: work in st st.
  5. Row 16: k2tog, k5, ssk. 7 sts.
  6. Row 17: purl all sts.
  7. BO all sts.

Seam each arm lengthwise and stuff very lightly. Close the paw end round. Sew the arms to the upper sides of the body after the dress bodice is in place, so they rest naturally over the edges.

Tail

The tail is pale pink and curves beside the doll. It should be long enough to peek from under the dress and curl softly to one side.

  1. CO 5 sts in pale pink.
  2. Work 28 rows in stockinette stitch.
  3. BO all sts, leaving a long tail for seaming.

Fold the strip lengthwise and seam into a narrow tube. Stuff very lightly with yarn scraps only if needed. Sew the tail to the lower back of the body before attaching the skirt fully. Curve it gently to the left side.

Striped Dress Skirt

The skirt is blue and cream with horizontal stripes. It flares gently and sits high under the bodice. The hem is cream, followed by repeated blue stripes, matching the pictured soft summer dress.

  23. BO all sts loosely.

Seam the short edges of the skirt together at the back. Slide it onto the body from the bottom. The skirt should sit at the waist and flare over the legs. Sew the top edge to the body with small hidden stitches.

Cream Dress Bodice

The bodice is cream and sits above the striped skirt. It has embroidered flowers across the front and blue trim near the neckline.

Wrap the bodice around the upper body with the blue trim at the top. Seam at the back. The lower edge should overlap the top of the skirt slightly. Sew in place carefully so the body fabric does not show between the bodice and skirt.

Blue Shoulder Straps

  1. Make 2. CO 4 sts in sky blue.
  2. Work 22 rows in garter stitch, knitting every row.
  3. BO all sts.

Place one strap over each shoulder from the front bodice to the back. Cross them very slightly over the shoulder line if needed for fit. Sew the back ends first, then bring the front ends down and secure with small tan buttons, as shown in the image.

Flower Embroidery on Bodice

The bodice front has tiny colorful flowers stitched in a garden row. Use small straight stitches and French knots if comfortable. Keep the embroidery delicate so it does not overpower the doll.

  • Use green yarn to stitch 5 short stems across the front bodice.
  • Add tiny leaves with single diagonal stitches.
  • Make one red flower using 4 short straight stitches.
  • Make one lavender flower using 4 short straight stitches.
  • Make one blue flower using 4 short straight stitches.
  • Make one pink flower using 4 short straight stitches.
  • Add yellow centers with one small knot or one tiny stitch.

  6. Row 9: purl all sts.
  7. Row 10: k2tog, k2, ssk. 4 sts.
  8. Cut yarn and draw through remaining sts.

Seam and lightly stuff the strawberry. Embroider white seeds. Add green leaf stitches at the top. Place it inside the basket and secure with one hidden stitch if the basket will be displayed.

Facial Embroidery

The expression is soft, shy, and slightly curious. Take time with this step. Small adjustments in eye placement and embroidery angle will change the whole personality of the doll.

  • Place the eyes inside the cream eye patches, about 1.25 in apart from center to center.
  • Place the pink nose centered below the eyes on the raised muzzle.
  • Use pale pink yarn to stitch two short eyebrow marks above the eyes.
  • Use light brown yarn to outline the eyes with a few small stitches if desired.
  • Add rosy cheeks using duplicate stitch, soft yarn shading, or a tiny amount of powder blush.
  • Keep cheek color low and outward, below the eyes and beside the muzzle.

For the pictured look, do not add a strong mouth. A very tiny vertical stitch under the nose is enough. The main charm comes from the round eyes, blush, and gentle knitted texture.

Assembly Order

  1. Knit, seam, and stuff the head.
  2. Add the muzzle, eye patches, eyes, and nose.
  3. Knit and attach the ears high on the head.
  4. Make and stuff the body.
  5. Attach the legs and feet to the lower front body.
  6. Sew the tail to the lower back body.
  7. Add the skirt and bodice to the body.
  8. Sew the head firmly to the body.
  9. Attach the arms at the sides.
  10. Add shoulder straps and front buttons.
  11. Embroider flowers on the bodice.
  12. Add sandals, crossbody bag, ear flower, hat, and basket.

Joining the Head to the Body

Use a long length of cream yarn and a strong tapestry needle. Place the head slightly forward on the narrow neck area. The face should look downward just a little, like the mouse is sitting sweetly on the table.

Sew around the neck at least two full times. Pass the needle through the body and lower head, pulling firmly but not distorting the shape. Add extra stitches at the front neck to prevent the head from tilting backward.

Positioning Details to Match the Photo

  • The ears should be attached high and wide, with the inner pink sections facing forward.
  • The flower should sit near the base of one ear, not centered on top.
  • The eyes should be large and glossy, giving a gentle handmade toy expression.
  • The dress skirt should cover the upper legs but leave the feet and sandals visible.
  • The crossbody bag should hang across the front with the strawberry facing outward.
  • The hat and basket may be displayed beside the doll, as shown in the scene.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the doll from the front before tying off any final threads. Adjust the ears so they are even but not perfectly stiff. Add a few hidden stitches at the ear bases to hold the gentle outward angle.

Smooth the head and cheeks with your hands. Add extra stuffing only if the face looks flat. The lower cheek area should be softly full, while the top of the head remains rounded.

Secure all accessories with small stitches if the doll will be handled often. For display, you may leave the hat and basket separate, just like the photographed arrangement.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean gently with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if safety eyes, buttons, or delicate embroidery are used.
  • Let the doll air dry fully before storing.
  • Keep away from rough play if made with small buttons or glued details.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Head is firmly stuffed and smoothly rounded.
  • Ears are large, pink-lined, and evenly angled.
  • Eyes are centered inside raised cream patches.
  • Nose is small, pink, and placed on the upper muzzle.
  • Dress has cream bodice, blue trim, and blue-and-cream skirt stripes.
  • Flower embroidery is visible across the bodice.
  • Bag, sandals, tail, hat, and basket are complete.
  • All yarn tails are woven in securely.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For long-term display, keep the mouse away from direct sunlight to prevent fading. Store it in a dry place with good airflow. If dust collects, use a soft brush and work gently in the direction of the knitted stitches.

If the doll becomes misshapen, lightly reshape it by hand. Avoid heavy steam near plastic eyes or buttons. For treasured keepsake use, wrap the doll in acid-free tissue and store accessories beside it rather than pressed tightly against the face.
