Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US crochet terms. The project is built as a soft diorama with separate pieces sewn onto a rectangular grass base. The camper van is the largest piece and is made as a shaped soft box with cream roof, burgundy lower body, side windows, wheels, lights, striped awning, and bunting.

The finished scene is designed to sit flat on a table like the image. The raccoon sits near the pond holding a fishing rod, while the fox sits beside the picnic area. Most pieces are crocheted in small tight stitches to keep the amigurumi shape firm and neat.

Finished Size

  • Full base: about 18 in wide x 14 in deep.
  • Camper van: about 10 in long x 5 in tall x 4.5 in deep.
  • Raccoon: about 4 in tall seated.
  • Fox: about 3.5 in tall seated.
  • Pond: about 9 in long x 5 in wide.
  • Trees: about 2.5 to 4 in tall.

Materials

  • Worsted weight cotton or acrylic yarn in cream, burgundy, turquoise, grass green, dark green, mint, brown, tan, gray, black, white, navy blue, light blue, yellow, orange, red, pink, and pastel bunting colors.
  • 3.0 mm crochet hook for amigurumi pieces.
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook for the base and pond.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Small safety eyes, 6 mm for raccoon and fox, or black yarn embroidery.
  • Plastic canvas or thin cardboard for the camper van body, base support, picnic table, and awning support.
  • Two wooden skewers or firm crocheted rods for the awning poles and fishing rod.
  • Black embroidery thread for facial details.
  • Optional: fabric glue for tiny decorations, though sewing is recommended.

Abbreviations

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • FO: fasten off
  • st or sts: stitch or stitches
  • R: round or row

Gauge and Crochet Style

For the amigurumi pieces, use tight tension so the stuffing does not show. A gauge of about 6 sc x 6 rows per 1 inch works well with worsted weight yarn and a 3.0 mm hook. For the base and pond, a slightly looser gauge is acceptable, but keep the fabric flat.

Stuff the dolls firmly but do not overstuff the camper van. The van should look rounded and padded on top, with flatter sides. Insert plastic canvas inside the van walls and roof to help it keep the boxy camper shape shown in the image.

Grass Base

The base is a flat rectangle with softly rounded corners. The pond is sewn on top later, slightly toward the front right side, leaving enough green space for the camper, picnic area, trees, rocks, and sign.

Large Green Base

  2. R1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Ch 1, turn. 60 sc.

  4. R53: Sc across. Do not turn.
  5. Border R1: Work 2 sc in the corner, sc evenly down the side with 1 sc in each row end, 2 sc in next corner, sc across the foundation chain, 2 sc in next corner, sc up the second side, 2 sc in final corner, sl st to first border sc.
  6. Border R2: Ch 1, sc around, placing 3 sc in each corner. Sl st to join.
  7. Border R3: Ch 1, sc around again. FO and weave in ends.

Optional firm base: Cut plastic canvas slightly smaller than the base. Crochet a second plain rectangle the same size, place the canvas between both layers, and sew the edges together with green yarn. This makes the scene sturdy like a display mat.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Sew all character heads firmly to their bodies using matching yarn. The fox face should look friendly with a small black nose, short smile, and white muzzle. The raccoon should have a clear black eye mask, white muzzle, gray ears, and blue beanie pulled low.

Check that every small object is secured to the base. The pond rocks should overlap the water edge slightly, creating a natural shoreline. The awning poles should lean diagonally from the front corners of the awning down to the grass, matching the cozy camper setup in the image.

  • Add cream curtain stitches inside the camper windows.
  • Add gray door handle and small side step under the camper door.
  • Add white ripple embroidery around the bobber.
  • Add tiny blue dash stitches across the pond for movement.
  • Add red berries to bushes and white dots to mushroom caps.

Care Notes

Spot clean only with a slightly damp cloth. Do not machine wash the finished diorama because the camper, awning, sign, and picnic table may contain plastic canvas or internal supports. Let the piece air dry fully before storing.

Keep the project away from direct sunlight for long periods, especially if you use cotton yarn in burgundy, turquoise, navy, and green. Strong light can fade bright colors over time.

  • Fox is seated near the picnic table.
  • Pond has fish, ripples, bobber, rocks, and lily pads.
  • Picnic table has mugs, food, plate, cookies, and bottle.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Use a soft brush to remove dust from the camper roof, pond stitches, and small accessories. For stubborn marks, dab gently with cool water and mild soap. Avoid soaking the piece, twisting it, or rubbing the embroidered details.

Store the diorama in a clean box with tissue paper around the awning and fishing rod. Do not place heavy items on top of it. If the awning bends during storage, reshape it gently with your fingers and let it rest flat overnight.
