Crochet Tutorial: Apple Orchard Hedgehog Harvest Stand – Free Crochet Pattern

This cozy crochet scene features a rounded green orchard base with a pebble border, cream stepping-stone path, apple harvest stand, striped red-and-white awning, woven baskets, fruit crates, a twisted apple tree, ladder, fence, mushrooms, flowers, fallen leaves, a tiny robin, and three hedgehog orchard helpers. The finished display is designed as a cheerful tabletop diorama with many small details worked separately and sewn into place.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

The finished orchard display measures about 13 in wide, 11 in deep, and 12 in tall when made with worsted weight yarn and a 3.0 mm hook. The tall apple tree is the highest point, while the hedgehogs measure about 2.5 to 3.25 in tall depending on stuffing firmness.

Skill Level

Intermediate amigurumi. This pattern uses small pieces, shaping, sewing, surface details, and firm stuffing. A confident beginner can complete it slowly by making one section at a time.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in grass green, dark green, medium green, light green, brown, dark brown, tan, beige, cream, gray, red, yellow, orange, white, black, and small amounts of pink or blush.
  • 3.0 mm crochet hook for most pieces.
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook for tiny apples, flowers, leaves, and facial details.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Black safety eyes, 6 mm for adult hedgehog and 4 mm for baby hedgehogs, or black embroidery yarn.
  • Cardboard, plastic canvas, or thick felt for the base insert and harvest stand support.
  • Thin floral wire or pipe cleaners for the tree trunk, branches, ladder, awning posts, and cart handle.
  • Hot glue is optional, but sewing is recommended for a soft handmade finish.

Abbreviations Used

  • MR = magic ring
  • ch = chain
  • st = stitch
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • tr = treble crochet
  • inc = 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec = invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO = back loop only
  • FLO = front loop only
  • FO = fasten off
  • R = round or row
  • rep = repeat

Gauge

Gauge is not extremely strict, but stitches should be tight enough that stuffing does not show. With worsted yarn and a 3.0 mm hook, 6 sc rounds should measure about 1 in across. Use a smaller hook if your stuffing shows through the fabric.

Pattern Notes

  • Most pieces are worked in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to turn.
  • Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round.
  • Stuff firmly in small layers, especially the hedgehogs, tree canopies, and pebble border.
  • Leave long yarn tails on small decorative pieces for sewing.
  • The orchard base is worked flat, then bordered with stuffed gray pebbles.
  • The tree trunk is crocheted as a textured twisted tube around wire, then branches are added separately.

Orchard Base

The base is a rounded rectangle in grass green. It should look like a soft lawn mat with an oval-rectangle shape, slightly flattened at the front and back.

Rounded Rectangle Lawn

Use grass green yarn and 3.0 mm hook.

Add white French-knot-style stitches or tiny white circles to the mushroom caps.

Daisies and Yellow Flowers

Make 5 white daisies and 6 yellow flowers.

Daisy

  2. Change to white. Rep into each st: ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sl st into same center st.
  3. FO, leaving tail.

Small Yellow Flower

  1. With yellow, 5 sc in MR.
  2. In each st: ch 3, sl st in same st.
  3. FO, leaving tail.

Sew the daisies near the mushrooms and the yellow flowers around the base of the tree and along the fence line.

Fallen Leaves

Make 16 fallen leaves in orange and golden yellow. Scatter them around the tree trunk and right side of the lawn.

  1. Ch 6.
  2. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, 3 sc in last ch.
  3. Working on opposite side: dc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in last ch.
  4. FO and leave tail for sewing.

Extra Apples on the Ground

Make 8 more tiny apples in red and yellow. Sew a few under the stand, near the tree roots, and beside the crates to make the orchard look freshly harvested.

Tree Roots

The roots curve out from the base of the trunk. Make 6 roots in dark brown.

  1. Ch 10 for a long root or ch 7 for a short root.
  2. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across.
  3. FO, leaving tail.

Sew the roots from the trunk outward onto the grass. Add two roots toward the path, two toward the fence, and two behind the trunk.

Assembly Layout

  1. Place the apple stand on the left side of the base, slightly behind the cream path.
  2. Position the tree trunk behind and to the right of the stand, with branches spreading over the whole display.
  3. Sew the tree trunk firmly through the base and into the cardboard insert if possible.
  4. Sew the six canopies to the branch ends. Use the large canopy at the top, medium canopies left and right, and small canopies lower front, lower left, and lower right.
  5. Sew the ladder against the right side of the trunk.
  6. Sew the fence posts and rails around the back curve.
  7. Place the adult hedgehog to the left of the path beside the baby hedgehog.
  8. Place the cart hedgehog at the front right, angled toward the apple stand.
  9. Add baskets, crates, apples, scale, sign, price board, paper bag, mushrooms, flowers, and fallen leaves.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Use black yarn to embroider each hedgehog’s nose with a few small satin stitches. Add short curved mouth stitches under the nose. If using safety eyes, install them before closing the head or body pieces. If embroidering eyes, make two small black vertical stitches.

Add tiny blush stitches on the cheeks with pink yarn if desired. Sew the hedgehogs securely to the base so they stand upright. The adult hedgehog should look slightly taller and protective, while the two smaller hedgehogs should look busy with harvest work.

Check the apple placement on the tree. The image has apples hanging mostly from the front and lower sides of the leafy canopies. Add more red apples near the center front and more yellow apples toward the outer canopies for a balanced orchard look.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean only with a slightly damp cloth.
  • Do not machine wash because the display contains wire, cardboard, and many sewn-on details.
  • Let the piece air dry completely before storing.
  • Keep away from pets and very young children because of small apples, eyes, and wire supports.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Base: Green rounded lawn, gray pebble border, and cream stepping-stone path are attached.
  • Tree: Twisted trunk, five branches, six canopies, raised leaves, apples, roots, and ladder are secure.
  • Stand: Counter, posts, striped awning, Apple Orchard sign, price board, scale, baskets, and crates are in place.
  • Characters: Adult hedgehog, basket baby hedgehog, and cart hedgehog have faces, arms, feet, and spines.
  • Decor: Fence, mushrooms, daisies, yellow flowers, fallen leaves, paper bag, robin, and loose apples are sewn down.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, store the orchard display upright in a box with tissue paper around the tree and stand. Do not press the leafy canopies flat. If the branches bend during storage, gently reshape them by hand.

For dust removal, use a soft makeup brush or clean paintbrush. Brush around the leaves, apples, hedgehog spines, and awning scallops carefully. Avoid pulling on tiny sewn parts.

If any apple, flower, or leaf loosens over time, reattach it with matching yarn and a yarn needle. Make two or three secure stitches through the base of the small piece, then weave the tail into the nearest larger crochet section.
