Polar Bear Winter Cocoa Cabin – Crochet

Polar Bear Winter Cocoa Cabin – Crochet

This cozy crochet scene creates a portable winter cocoa cabin inside a soft suitcase, featuring a cream polar bear in a burgundy sweater and striped scarf, a chunky bed with snowy blanket, a fireplace with logs, cocoa mug, books, boots, mittens, stockings, gingerbread cookies, lantern, window, Christmas tree, snowflakes, and winter wall décor. The finished piece is designed as a detailed amigurumi room display with a hinged cabin-case look.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern uses US crochet terms and is worked in separate pieces, then sewn together into a winter cabin suitcase. Most pieces are worked with a 2.5 mm hook for firm amigurumi fabric. The suitcase panels are worked with tight single crochet so the walls hold shape. The bear is made in classic amigurumi rounds with a large round head, small rounded ears, short arms, seated legs, black oval nose, and small black eyes.

Finished size will depend on yarn and tension. With sport weight cotton or cotton-acrylic yarn and a 2.5 mm hook, the open suitcase measures about 10.5 in wide, 7 in deep, and 7.5 in tall. The polar bear measures about 4.5 in tall seated.

Materials

  • Sport weight yarn in cream, white, pale blue, light gray, beige, burgundy, dark green, brown, black, navy blue, red, soft tan, and small amounts of yellow.
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook for amigurumi and detailed pieces.
  • 3.0 mm crochet hook for the blanket texture if you want puffier stitches.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Plastic canvas, thin cardboard, or craft felt for stiffening the suitcase panels.
  • 6 mm black safety eyes or black embroidery thread.
  • Black embroidery thread for nose and mouth.
  • White embroidery thread for snowflakes, window snow dots, and cookie icing.
  • Yarn needle, stitch markers, scissors, pins.
  • Optional: two tiny metal clasps or gray crocheted latch pieces.

Abbreviations

  • MR = magic ring
  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • inc = 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec = invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO = back loop only
  • FLO = front loop only
  • st = stitch
  • FO = fasten off
  • R = round or row

Gauge and Construction Notes

For amigurumi, exact gauge is less important than tight fabric. Your stitches should be firm enough that stuffing does not show. The suitcase walls should be slightly stiff, so crochet tightly and insert plastic canvas between the outer and inner layers if needed.

The suitcase is made from a base tray and a standing back lid. The outside is white, the inside wall is pale blue, and the floor is warm beige. A thick white rim surrounds the case. All cabin accessories are sewn or lightly glued in place after blocking and shaping.

Work in continuous rounds for the bear and small rounded pieces unless the pattern says to join. Use a stitch marker at the first stitch of each round. Stuff each amigurumi part gradually and firmly, but do not overstuff small flat décor pieces.

Suitcase Cabin Base

Beige Floor Panel

Use beige yarn and 2.5 mm hook. Work in rows.

  1. Ch 43.

  1. Ch 47.
  2. R1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. 46 sc.
  3. R2-R9: Ch 1, turn, sc across. 46 sc.

Sew the four white wall rectangles around the beige floor panel, with the short side walls between the long front and back walls. Sew through the edge stitches only, keeping the seams square. Insert plastic canvas behind each wall if you want a firmer suitcase shape.

Wall Snow Texture and Cabin Details

The pale blue back wall in the image has a soft stitched texture. If your wall looks too plain, add small surface stitches in pale blue or white. Keep them subtle so the window, stockings, tree, and bear remain the focus.

  2. Place more dots near the window and fewer behind the bear.
  3. Add a few pale blue straight stitches along the inside corners to soften the suitcase seams.

Placement Guide

Before sewing everything permanently, arrange all pieces inside the suitcase. The bear should sit on the left side of the bed, slightly forward. The tree stands behind the bear toward the center. The fireplace sits on the right front floor. The mug on the stool is placed between the bed and fireplace.

  • Upper left wall: burgundy hat, tan mittens, gingerbread cookies, and stockings.
  • Upper right wall: beige window with navy snowy panes.
  • Lower right wall: stack of books.
  • Center floor: Christmas tree and black lantern.

  • Front right floor: boots and blue snowflake.
  • Front outside: handle, latch, and gray handle anchors.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Sew the bear head to the body with the muzzle facing forward. Add extra stitches at the back of the neck so the head stays upright.
  2. Sew arms at R16-R18 of the body, angled downward. Sew legs to the lower front body so the feet rest on the bed.
  3. Wrap the scarf around the neck and secure it with two hidden stitches behind the head.
  4. Place the bear on the bed and sew through the lower body into the blanket and mattress. Keep stitches hidden under the sweater edge.
  5. Sew the bed into the left corner of the suitcase base.
  6. Sew the fireplace, stool, mug, boots, lantern, tree, books, and snowflake into place.
  7. Sew wall pieces last, starting with the window, then hat and mittens, then stockings and gingerbread cookies.
  8. Check the bear face. The nose should be centered on the muzzle, eyes even, and mouth small and gentle.

Care Notes

Because this design includes many small decorations and shaped panels, gentle care is best. Do not machine wash the full suitcase scene. Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap only. Let the piece air dry completely before storing.

  • Keep away from heavy moisture, direct heat, and strong sunlight.
  • If the suitcase walls bend, reshape by hand and let them rest open overnight.
  • Do not pull the wall decorations, handle, boots, mug, or lantern.
  • Use this piece as display décor, not as a toy for very young children.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The suitcase opens at a stable angle and the back wall does not fall backward.
  • The white rim is even around the case.
  • The bear sits securely on the bed.
  • The scarf hangs neatly across the sweater.
  • The fireplace opening is dark and the logs are visible.
  • The window has four snowy navy panes.
  • The boots, mug, books, tree, lantern, stockings, cookies, hat, mittens, pillows, and snowflakes are all attached.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, store the winter cocoa cabin open and upright. Place tissue paper inside the suitcase if you need to store it in a box. Avoid stacking heavy items on top of it, because the back lid and fireplace may flatten.

For dust, use a soft makeup brush or clean paintbrush. Brush gently from top to bottom, especially around the bear face, tree ornaments, window, and small wall décor. For stains, dab lightly with cool water and mild soap, then blot with a dry towel.

After cleaning, reshape the bed blanket, boots, scarf, and suitcase rim with your fingers. Allow the piece to dry naturally in a shaded place. Once dry, check that all tiny sewn items are still secure and reinforce any loose stitches with matching yarn.
