This cheerful yellow sponge sea friend doll is designed with a square textured body, big round eyes, a long nose, a wide smiling mouth, blue summer overalls, white shirt sleeves, striped socks, brown sandals, a sunny yellow hat, a red crossbody bag, a tiny pineapple house, and a small spatula accessory. Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Overview
This pattern uses firm amigurumi-style crochet with a 3.0 mm hook for the doll and small accessories. The main body is made as a soft rectangular sponge block with a front panel, back panel, side strip, and lightly stuffed edges. The face details are layered on top so the eyes, smile, cheeks, holes, and nose sit clearly on the square yellow face.
The summer outfit is made as separate crocheted pieces and sewn onto the doll. The blue shorts and bib overalls wrap around the lower body. The white shirt sleeves are attached at the sides under the bib straps. The hat, bag, pineapple house, and spatula are removable-style accessories, but they can also be sewn in place for display.
Finished Size
- Doll height: about 11 inches from hat top to sandals.
- Body only: about 6 inches tall, 5 inches wide, and 1.5 inches thick.
- Hat width: about 4.25 inches across the brim.
- Pineapple house: about 2.25 inches tall including leaves.
- Spatula: about 3.5 inches long.
Skill Level
Advanced beginner to intermediate. The stitches are simple, but the pattern includes several small shaped parts, color changes, surface embroidery, and detailed assembly. Read each section before sewing pieces together so the facial expression and outfit sit neatly.

Gauge
With 3.0 mm hook and worsted yarn, 8 sc and 8 rows should measure about 1 inch. Exact gauge is less important than firm tension. The stitches should be tight enough that stuffing does not show through, especially around the yellow body and face.
Important Notes Before Starting
- Work most amigurumi pieces in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to turn.
- Stuff each part firmly but do not overstuff the flat sponge body. The body should look square and softly padded, not round.
- Use pins to place the eyes, mouth, nose, clothing, hat, and bag before sewing.
- For a cleaner finish, weave all yarn tails into the inside of the body or accessories.
- The front of the doll is the side with the face, overalls bib, red bag, and sandals facing forward.
Main Yellow Sponge Body
The body is a soft rectangular block made from two flat panels and one long side strip. The front panel includes extra raised sponge spots later, so keep the front panel smooth and square. Use bright yellow yarn.

Joining the Body
- Place the side strip around the edge of the front panel with wrong sides facing inward.
- Sew the strip to the front panel using a whip stitch through the outer loops of the border stitches.
- Attach the back panel to the other edge of the strip, leaving a 3-inch opening at the bottom.
- Add light stuffing into the body. Keep the front and back flat. Add extra stuffing only near the corners to keep the square shape.
- Close the opening securely.
- Pinch each corner gently and sew 2 or 3 small stitches through the corner to sharpen the square shape.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Store the finished doll in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Bright yellow, red, and blue yarns may fade if displayed for long periods in strong light. If the doll is used for photos, brush away dust with a soft clean makeup brush after each session.
To preserve the square body shape, do not compress the doll under heavy objects. If the corners become soft, gently pinch them back into shape and steam lightly from a distance without touching the yarn directly. Allow the doll to cool flat before moving it.
For long-term display, keep the small pineapple house, spatula, and hat in the same box as the doll so no accessory is lost. Wrap the doll in acid-free tissue or a clean cotton cloth. Avoid plastic bags in humid rooms because trapped moisture can affect the stuffing and yarn texture.
