Crochet Tutorial: Pear Orchard Raccoon Cider Cottage – Free Crochet Pattern

This pear orchard crochet scene features a tall pear-shaped cider cottage with a leafy green roof, brown stem chimney, arched front door, round windows, and a tiny “Pear Cider” sign. Around the cottage are raccoon orchard workers, a hedgehog with a mug, pear trees, wooden crates, a cart, flowers, mushrooms, stepping stones, a textured log, and a round grassy base.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written to recreate the visible proportions of the pictured pear orchard cottage scene. The main cottage is worked as a soft pear-shaped structure, wider at the lower body and narrowing near the leafy roof. The finished display is designed as a miniature crochet diorama with many separate pieces sewn onto a round grass base.

The cottage is the focal point, so make it first. The raccoons, hedgehog, trees, crates, path, flowers, mushrooms, bird, and pear accessories are added afterward. Use tight tension for the amigurumi parts so the stuffing does not show through the stitches.

Finished Size

  • Round base: about 14 inches wide.
  • Pear cottage: about 8.5 inches tall including stem.
  • Large raccoon: about 4 inches tall when seated.
  • Small raccoon: about 3 inches tall.
  • Hedgehog: about 2.75 inches tall.
  • Trees: about 4.5 inches tall.

Skill Level

Intermediate. This pattern uses basic amigurumi shaping, surface crochet, sewing, small appliques, color changes, and several miniature accessories. Confident beginners can complete it slowly by making one section at a time.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in pale pear yellow, sage green, light mint, medium brown, dark brown, taupe gray, cream, black, white, tan, golden yellow, red, orange, soft green, and grass green.
  • Small amounts of embroidery thread in black, white, brown, and green.
  • 3.0 mm crochet hook for most amigurumi pieces.
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook for the round base and cottage body if you prefer a softer fabric.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Scissors.
  • Two 6 mm safety eyes for the large raccoon.
  • Two 5 mm safety eyes for the small raccoon.
  • Two 5 mm safety eyes for the hedgehog.
  • Optional floral wire or pipe cleaners for trees, cart handles, and bird legs.
  • Small piece of cardboard or plastic canvas for the base of crates, cart, table, and cottage door.

Abbreviations in US Terms

  • MR: magic ring.
  • ch: chain.
  • sl st: slip stitch.
  • sc: single crochet.
  • hdc: half double crochet.
  • dc: double crochet.
  • tr: treble crochet.
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch.
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease.
  • BLO: back loop only.
  • FLO: front loop only.
  • st: stitch.
  • sts: stitches.
  • FO: fasten off.

Gauge Notes

Gauge is not strict, but the pieces must be firm. With a 3.0 mm hook, 6 rounds of sc in amigurumi should measure about 1.5 inches across. If your stitches are loose, use a smaller hook. If the cottage leans too much, stuff firmly and add a flat weighted insert at the bottom.

  • Cottage body: pale pear yellow.
  • Roof leaves: sage green with light mint edging.
  • Stem chimney: medium brown.
  • Door and window frames: dark brown.

  • Grass base: grass green.
  • Flowers: white petals with yellow centers.

Cottage Texture Lines

To make the pear surface look like the image, use pale yellow yarn and a yarn needle to add subtle vertical stitch lines. Insert at the bottom center, come out near the top neck, pull gently, and return to the bottom. Make 8 soft lines evenly spaced. Do not pull too tightly.

Leaf Roof Crown

The roof is made of layered pear leaves that overlap around the top. Each leaf is sewn from the narrow end near the stem and allowed to curl slightly at the tip. Make 8 large leaves and 8 smaller leaves.

Large Roof Leaf, Make 8

  1. With sage green, ch 18.
  2. Round 1: starting in second ch from hook, sc 2, hdc 3, dc 7, hdc 3, sc 2. Work on the other side of the chain: sc 2, hdc 3, dc 7, hdc 3, sc 2. Sl st to first sc.

Sewing the Roof

  1. Place the cottage upright. Pin the 8 large leaves around Round 62 of the cottage body, with the leaf tips pointing outward and downward.
  2. Overlap each leaf slightly over the next one. Sew only the top third of each leaf so the lower edges lift naturally.
  3. Pin the 8 small leaves above the large leaves between the gaps. Sew them around Round 65.
  4. Use light mint yarn to add one long embroidered vein down each leaf and 3 short diagonal veins on each side.

Brown Stem Chimney

  1. With medium brown and 3.0 mm hook, make MR. Round 1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.

Placement Plan

Before sewing everything down, place all pieces on the base and check the composition. The pear cottage should sit slightly behind the center, with the door facing forward. The path should lead from the front edge directly to the door.

  • Place the large pear cottage in the back center of the grass base.
  • Place the left pear tree behind the cart and crate.
  • Place the right pear tree behind the large raccoon.
  • Place the hedgehog on the left side of the stone path.
  • Place the small raccoon kneeling near the front center with the pear basket.
  • Place the large raccoon on the right side beside the cider table.
  • Place the brown log and red mushrooms on the front right edge.
  • Place crates and cart on the left and near the cottage.
  • Scatter flowers, grass clumps, and pebbles around the empty spaces.

Assembly Order

  1. Sew the pear cottage to the base first. Use pale pear yellow yarn and stitch around the bottom edge several times.
  2. Sew the front step in front of the door and arrange the stepping stones from the step to the base edge.
  3. Sew the two trees behind the cottage sides. Add extra stitches through the trunks and into the base for stability.
  4. Sew down the cart, crates, and cider table.
  5. Sew the hedgehog, small raccoon, and large raccoon in place.
  6. Add the log, mushrooms, pebbles, flowers, and grass clumps last.
  7. Attach extra pears to tree branches, crates, basket, and table bowl.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Use small neat stitches for all faces. The raccoon masks should be bold and centered over the eyes. Add white eye patches after the black mask is attached so the face has the same layered look as the picture.

For both raccoons, embroider a black nose with a short vertical mouth line. Add tiny white highlights beside the eyes if desired. For the hedgehog, keep the face soft and simple with a small dark nose and short smile.

Check that the large raccoon appears seated, the small raccoon leans toward the basket, and the hedgehog holds the mug close to its body. These small angles help the scene feel like a busy pear cider orchard.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean only with a slightly damp cloth.
  • Do not machine wash because the cottage, trees, and small sewn accessories may shift.
  • Keep the diorama away from direct sunlight to protect the soft yarn colors.
  • If the roof leaves curl too much, gently steam them from a distance and shape with your fingers.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The pear cottage is firmly sewn to the center back of the base.
  • The leafy roof has two layers of overlapping leaves.
  • The brown stem stands upright and slightly tilted.
  • The door, windows, sign, and front step are aligned on the cottage front.
  • Both raccoons have masks, tails, ears, paws, and clear facial details.
  • The hedgehog has a textured back and tiny mug.
  • The trees have branches, leaves, pears, and the orange bird.
  • The path, crates, cart, table, log, mushrooms, flowers, grass, and pebbles are securely attached.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, lift the finished piece from underneath the grass base instead of pulling on the cottage, trees, or characters. Dust it gently with a soft brush. For small stains, dab the area with cool water and mild soap, then blot dry with a clean towel.

Store the pear orchard cottage in a dry place with enough room above the stem and tree branches. If storing long term, cover it loosely with tissue paper. Avoid crushing the roof leaves, bird, pears, and raccoon tails so the scene keeps its rounded handmade shape.
