Crochet Tutorial: Mouse Homework Nook Cottage – Free Crochet Pattern.

This Mouse Homework Nook Cottage is a cozy crochet suitcase room filled with a lavender study wall, cream suitcase trim, tiny shelves, books, glowing star garland, a moonlit window with lace curtains, a desk, stools, pillows, baskets, notebooks, pencils, and three sweet mouse characters doing homework together. The design is made as a detailed amigurumi diorama for display, storytelling, and handmade gift decor.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern creates an open suitcase-style crochet room. The bottom half forms the floor and front suitcase wall. The upper half forms the upright lavender wall. Cream edging makes the piece look like a soft vintage suitcase, while the handle and small latch tabs decorate the front.

The room includes a homework desk on the left, a cushioned reading corner on the right, a fluffy white rug in the center, and a detailed wall with shelves, alphabet poster, framed plant picture, window, curtains, and star lights. The three mice are made separately and sewn into the room.

  • Skill level: Intermediate, with beginner-friendly explanations.
  • US crochet terms: Used throughout the pattern.
  • Main techniques: Working in rows, rounds, back loops, front loops, simple shaping, sewing, embroidery, and small amigurumi parts.
  • Finished display size: About 10 in wide, 7 in deep, and 8 in tall when open, depending on yarn tension.
  • Best use: Decorative display. For children under 3, embroider all details and avoid small removable parts.

Gauge and Structure Notes

Gauge is not strict, but the stitches should be firm enough to hold shape. For the mouse bodies, use tight stitches so stuffing does not show. For suitcase panels, crochet firmly but not stiffly, because the plastic canvas insert will provide structure.

The suitcase is made from two rectangles joined with a crochet hinge. The bottom rectangle is the floor. The top rectangle stands upright as the back wall. Both are edged with thick cream borders, matching the rounded suitcase look in the image.

  • Main suitcase color: Cream outer shell.
  • Interior wall and floor: Soft lavender.
  • Furniture: Beige, cream, brown, and pastel colors.
  • Mice: Pale beige with pink ears, black eyes, and pastel outfits.

Suitcase Bottom Floor Panel

Lavender Floor Insert

Use soft lavender yarn and the 2.75 mm hook. This piece forms the flat bottom floor inside the suitcase. Keep your rows even and block the rectangle lightly before assembly.

  1. Ch 46.
  2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. You should have 45 sc.
  3. Rows 2 to 38: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. Keep 45 sc.
  4. FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Cream Bottom Outer Base

The cream base is slightly larger than the lavender insert. This creates the soft suitcase rim visible around the floor.

  1. With cream yarn, ch 52.
  2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. You should have 51 sc.
  3. Rows 2 to 42: Ch 1, turn, sc across. Keep 51 sc.

Cut a piece of plastic canvas slightly smaller than the cream rectangle. Place it between the cream base and the lavender floor insert. Sew the lavender insert centered on top, catching only the inner loops so the border remains raised.

Suitcase Back Wall Panel

Lavender Back Wall Insert

This wall holds the shelves, alphabet chart, picture frame, window, curtains, and star garland. Crochet it in the same stitch texture as the floor for a matched room effect.

  1. With soft lavender yarn, ch 50.
  2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. You should have 49 sc.
  3. Rows 2 to 39: Ch 1, turn, sc across. Keep 49 sc.
  4. FO, leaving a long sewing tail.

Cream Back Outer Panel

  5. Border Round 2: BLO sc around, placing 3 BLO sc in each corner. Join.
  6. Border Round 3: Sc around once more for a thick padded suitcase edge. Join and FO.

Place plastic canvas behind the lavender insert. Sew the lavender wall centered onto the cream panel. Keep the cream edge visible on all sides, especially at the top and sides, to match the rounded suitcase frame.

Joining the Suitcase

Place the floor panel flat and the wall panel behind it, right sides facing outward. Use cream yarn to whipstitch the lower long edge of the wall to the back long edge of the floor. This creates a flexible hinge.

After sewing, open the wall upright. Add a second line of slip stitches across the hinge on the inside, using lavender yarn, so the back wall stands at a slightly open angle. Do not make the hinge too tight, or the suitcase will not sit naturally.

Front Suitcase Wall

The front wall is the cream raised edge visible along the front of the suitcase. It should be tall enough to hold the room shape but low enough to show the inside details.

  1. With cream yarn, ch 52.
  2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. You should have 51 sc.
  3. Rows 2 to 8: Ch 1, turn, sc across.
  4. FO, leaving a long tail.
  5. Sew this strip to the front edge of the floor panel.

Side Suitcase Walls

  4. Rows 2 to 8: Ch 1, turn, sc across.
  5. FO and sew one strip to each side edge of the floor.

Rounded Cream Suitcase Piping

The thick rounded edging gives the suitcase the plush look shown in the image. Use cream yarn and work slowly around every outside edge.

  1. Attach cream yarn to one bottom front corner.
  2. Sc around the full outside suitcase opening, placing extra sc at each corner so the edge does not curl.
  3. Work 2 more rounds of sc around the same edge.
  4. For a corded look, work one final round of sl st loosely around the outermost ridge.
  5. FO and weave in ends neatly.

Suitcase Handle and Hardware

  5. Sew the handle to the center front wall, leaving the middle raised like a loop.

Small Latch Tabs

Make three small tabs to mimic the bronze clasps across the front. If using actual mini metal pieces, sew them over these crochet tabs. For a fully soft version, use brown and black embroidery only.

  1. With brown yarn, ch 5.
  2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. You should have 4 sc.
  3. Rows 2 to 3: Ch 1, turn, sc across.

  • Center floor: white fluffy rug and floor mouse.
  • Lower right: pillow corner and basket of toys.

Detailed Sewing Order

  1. Sew the lavender inserts to the cream suitcase panels.
  2. Join the bottom floor and back wall with the cream hinge.
  3. Sew the front and side suitcase walls to the floor.
  4. Add rounded cream piping around all visible suitcase edges.
  5. Attach the handle and latch tabs to the front.
  6. Sew all wall decorations before adding furniture.
  7. Sew the desk, shelves, globe, basket, rug, and pillows to the floor.
  8. Sew the mice in place after all large furniture is attached.
  9. Add notebooks, pencils, crayons, and tiny accessories last.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Final assembly: Pin every piece in place before sewing. Check that the suitcase stands open without falling backward. If the back wall leans too far, add a hidden lavender support chain from the wall side to the floor side.

Facial detailing: Use black embroidery thread for tiny eyes and noses. Keep the eyes small and glossy-looking with one short stitch. Add pink cheek stitches on each mouse. Do not use safety eyes if the piece may be handled by young children.

Mouse posing: The mother mouse should lean gently toward the desk. The small desk mouse should face the notebook. The floor mouse should sit low on the fluffy rug with the notebook placed directly in front.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if plastic canvas, cardboard, wire, or metal clasps are used.
  • Let the piece air dry fully before closing the suitcase.
  • Reshape the curtains, pillows, and mice while damp if needed.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight to protect pastel yarn colors.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The suitcase opens and stands upright.
  • The cream border is even and rounded.
  • The lavender wall and floor are smooth and flat.
  • The shelves, posters, window, and lights are securely sewn.
  • The desk accessories are attached firmly.
  • All three mice have eyes, noses, ears, cheeks, tails, and correct outfits.
  • The rug, baskets, pillows, books, globe, lamp, notebooks, and crayons are included.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Dust the crochet cottage gently with a soft brush. For deeper cleaning, dab only the stained area with a damp cloth. Avoid soaking the suitcase because the inner structure may soften or bend.

Store the piece open in a dry display area, or close it loosely with tissue paper inside to protect the curtains and wall decorations. If the star garland or shelves flatten, reshape them with your fingers before displaying again.

For long-term preservation, keep the cottage away from strong heat, moisture, and direct window light. Small details such as books, pencils, and yarn balls should be checked occasionally and re-stitched if they loosen from handling.
