Crochet Tutorial: Fox Quilt Mending Cottage – Free Crochet Pattern.

This Fox Quilt Mending Cottage is a cozy suitcase-style crochet room featuring an open travel case, warm rust edging, a miniature sitting area, two fox amigurumi, patchwork quilts, yarn baskets, a sewing table, bookshelves, curtains, wall art, star garland, spools, scissors, pillows, and soft cottage details. The finished piece is designed as a decorative crochet diorama with many tiny handmade accessories.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Open suitcase cottage: about 13 in wide, 10 in deep, and 10 in tall when displayed open.
  • Adult fox: about 5.5 in seated height.
  • Baby fox: about 2.75 in seated height.
  • Sofa: about 4.5 in wide.
  • Chair: about 3.25 in wide.
  • Coffee table: about 2.75 in wide.
  • Patchwork quilt: about 3.75 in by 4.75 in.

Skill Level

Intermediate. This pattern uses small amigurumi pieces, flat panels, color changes, simple embroidery, joining seams, surface crochet, and careful assembly. A confident beginner can make it slowly by completing one section at a time.

Materials

  • Worsted weight cotton or cotton blend yarn in rust orange, burnt orange, cream, beige, tan, mustard, caramel, brown, dark brown, sage green, olive green, soft blue, dusty rose, red, white, and black.
  • Lightweight cotton yarn or embroidery floss in cream, gold, brown, green, red, and black for tiny details.
  • 3.0 mm crochet hook for the suitcase, furniture, and foxes.
  • 2.25 mm crochet hook for small accessories, flowers, books, spools, and wall art.
  • Polyester fiberfill.
  • Plastic canvas, thin cardboard, or craft foam for stiffening the suitcase panels.
  • Two 6 mm black safety eyes for the adult fox and two 4 mm black safety eyes for the baby fox, or embroidered eyes for a child-safe version.
  • Yarn needle, stitch markers, sewing pins, scissors, and small amount of fabric glue if desired.
  • Optional warm white mini craft lights for the star garland. Do not leave battery lights unattended.

Abbreviations in US Terms

  • ch = chain
  • st = stitch
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • inc = 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec = single crochet 2 stitches together
  • BLO = back loop only
  • FLO = front loop only
  • RS = right side
  • WS = wrong side
  • FO = fasten off

Gauge

With worsted yarn and a 3.0 mm hook, 18 sc and 20 rows should measure about 4 in. Exact gauge is less important than firm stitches. The suitcase walls, fox heads, and furniture need tight fabric so stuffing and inserts do not show through.

General Notes

  • Work amigurumi pieces in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to join.
  • Use a stitch marker at the first stitch of each round.
  • Stuff firmly but do not overstuff tiny pieces.
  • For a clean miniature look, weave in all tails as you work.
  • Use plastic canvas inside the suitcase panels so the open cottage stands upright.
  • This design is intended as decorative art because it includes small pieces.

Color Palette Guide

The image has a warm handmade cottage mood. Use rust orange for the suitcase border, mustard and caramel for the seating, beige for the walls, cream for curtains and fox muzzles, sage for the wall and yarn accents, and mixed autumn colors for patchwork quilts.

Part 1: Open Suitcase Cottage Base

Bottom Floor Panel

The lower suitcase is a shallow rectangular tray with a rust outer wall and a beige inner floor. The floor is covered later with a patchwork rug, but this strong base keeps the whole cottage flat and stable.

  2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. 50 sc.
  3. Rows 2 to 36: Ch 1, turn, sc across. 50 sc.
  4. Do not fasten off. Sc evenly around all four sides, placing 3 sc in each corner. Join with sl st.
  5. FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Bottom Insert

  • Cut one rectangle of plastic canvas measuring slightly smaller than the crocheted floor.
  • Place the insert behind the floor panel.
  • Cut a second beige crochet panel the same size if you want the underside covered.
  • Whipstitch around the edges, trapping the insert inside.

Part 19: Final Placement of Cottage Details

Before sewing everything permanently, place the sofa on the left, coffee table in the center, dresser and lamp behind the table, adult fox chair on the right, baby fox at the front right, yarn basket at the front left, and hoop quilt near the middle front.

Check the balance from the front view. The image has many details, but the largest shapes still form a clear triangle: wall window at the top center, adult fox on the right, sofa and yarn basket on the left.

  1. Sew the sofa to the floor rug with matching mustard yarn.
  2. Sew the chair to the right floor area.
  3. Sew the dresser behind the coffee table.
  4. Secure the coffee table with several stitches through each leg.
  5. Sew the large yarn basket to the front left corner.
  6. Sew the baby fox and its basket to the front right.
  7. Tack the adult fox body into the chair so it does not tip forward.
  8. Attach the quilt to the fox lap with hidden stitches.
  9. Add spools and scissors last.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  • Shape the adult fox muzzle before sewing by pinching the lower center slightly.
  • Use black embroidery floss for a tiny triangular nose and short mouth line.
  • Add two small white eye highlights with embroidery floss if desired.
  • Brush the tail tip lightly with your fingers to make it look soft.
  • Sew all furniture down securely so the suitcase can be moved without pieces falling out.
  • Check that the wall decorations are straight and evenly spaced.

Care Notes

  • Keep the cottage as a display piece and avoid rough play.
  • Spot clean only with a slightly damp cloth.
  • Do not soak the suitcase because the inner stiffening may bend.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight to protect the warm yarn colors.
  • If using battery lights, remove batteries when storing.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Suitcase base is firm and stands open.
  • Rust border is even around both suitcase sections.
  • Window, curtains, shelves, towels, art, and star garland are attached.
  • Sofa, chair, table, dresser, lamp, baskets, and rug are secure.
  • Adult fox has face patch, ears, arms, legs, tail, and quilt.
  • Baby fox has basket and sits near the front right corner.
  • Patchwork quilt colors are mixed in warm autumn tones.
  • Spools, scissors, yarn balls, and hoop are added for the mending story.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, dust the cottage gently with a soft brush. Work from the top wall downward so dust does not settle into the furniture. For small stains, dab gently with cool water and mild soap, then press with a dry towel.

Store the cottage in a dry place with tissue paper supporting the upright wall and furniture. Do not place heavy objects on top of the suitcase. If the fox ears, curtains, or garland flatten during storage, reshape them gently with your fingers.

For long-term display, rotate the cottage occasionally so one side does not receive constant light. Check small sewn pieces every few months and reinforce any loose stitches. With gentle care, this Fox Quilt Mending Cottage will remain a warm handmade keepsake for many seasons.
