Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US English knitting terms. The doll is worked mostly in the round using double-pointed needles or the magic loop method. Small details are knitted flat, shaped, and sewn on carefully so the finished toy has the same handmade garden-doll look as the image.

  • Finished size: About 12 inches tall when worked with DK yarn and 2.75 mm needles.
  • Skill level: Confident beginner to intermediate.
  • Construction: Head, body, legs, arms, clothing, and accessories are made separately, then assembled.
  • Gauge: 7 stitches and 10 rounds = 1 inch in stockinette, worked firmly.
  • Stuffing style: Firm enough to hold shape, but not stretched so tightly that stitches open.

Materials

  • DK weight yarn in leaf green for the duck head.
  • DK weight yarn in golden yellow for beak, legs, and feet.
  • DK weight yarn in cream for blouse and neck collar.
  • DK weight yarn in tan and warm brown for striped overalls, basket, sandals, and wing accents.
  • DK weight yarn in straw beige for the hat and accessory baskets.
  • Small amounts of red, black, white, blue, pink, green, and sunflower yellow yarn.
  • 2.75 mm double-pointed needles or long circular needle for magic loop.
  • 2.5 mm needles for tighter accessory details.
  • 10 mm black safety eyes or embroidered eyes.
  • Polyester fiberfill.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Two small cream buttons for overall straps.
  • Stitch markers, pins, and scissors.
  • Optional: small amount of plastic canvas for basket bottoms.

Abbreviations

  • K: Knit.
  • P: Purl.
  • Sts: Stitches.
  • Rnd: Round.
  • RS: Right side.
  • WS: Wrong side.
  • Kfb: Knit into the front and back of the same stitch.
  • K2tog: Knit 2 stitches together.
  • SSK: Slip 1, slip 1, knit slipped stitches together through the back loops.
  • BO: Bind off.
  • CO: Cast on.
  • St st: Stockinette stitch.
  • Seed stitch: Alternate K1, P1, then work opposite stitches on the next row.
  • I-cord: Knit a small cord by sliding stitches across a double-pointed needle.

Important Knitting Notes

Work the doll with a tight gauge so the stuffing does not show. Most pieces begin with a small cast-on and are shaped with even increases. Use removable markers to divide rounds into four sections, especially on the head and body.

When changing stripes on the overalls, carry the unused yarn loosely up the inside. Do not pull tightly. The striped pants should look soft, rounded, and slightly puffy like the image, especially around the thighs and lower legs.

  • Stuff the head very firmly to keep the round shape.
  • Stuff arms and legs lightly at the top so they sew neatly to the body.
  • Flatten the beak slightly before sewing so it becomes wide and duck-like.
  • Use embroidery after assembly for flowers, eyebrows, mouth line, and small garden details.

  3. BO loosely.

Fold the upper beak very lightly and stuff only the center. Sew the cast-on edge to the face first, then sew the sides down. Attach the lower ridge directly under the upper beak, leaving the center edge slightly visible like a small smiling duck bill.

Eyebrows and Facial Details

  • Using black yarn, embroider one short slanted eyebrow above each eye.
  • Each eyebrow should be about 4 stitches long.
  • Angle the left eyebrow gently downward toward the center.
  • Angle the right eyebrow gently downward toward the center.
  • With green yarn, lightly sculpt under the beak by pulling a strand from cheek to cheek through the head.

Cream Neck and Body Base

The body is hidden partly under the blouse and overalls, but it gives the doll its soft seated shape. Begin at the neck in cream, then change to a neutral body color or cream. The body should be smaller than the head and gently pear-shaped.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 24 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-5: K1, P1 rib around for the high collar.
  3. Rnd 6: K all sts.

  • Stuff a pipe cleaner inside only if the item is decorative and not for a child.
  • Sew the spout to one side at an upward angle.
  • For the handle, knit a 24-row gray I-cord using 4 sts.
  • Curve it and sew both ends to the opposite side.
  • Add a tiny white daisy with a yellow center on the front.

Head-to-Body Joining

The head is large, so it must be attached securely. Pin the green head to the cream neck and check the face direction before sewing. The eyes should face forward and the beak should sit centered over the blouse.

  1. Thread a long strand of green yarn onto a tapestry needle.
  2. Sew around the base of the head through the cream neck stitches.
  3. Repeat the seam twice for strength.
  4. Gently pull the head downward to remove gaps.
  5. Weave in ends inside the body if possible.

Attaching Legs and Feet

The doll in the image sits with both legs hanging forward. Attach the yellow legs to the lower front of the body before dressing the doll fully. Then pull the striped overall legs over them.

  • Pin the legs side by side at the lower front body.
  • Keep about 4 stitches of space between the legs.
  • Sew around each leg top twice.
  • Attach the feet so the toes point slightly outward.
  • Slip the overall legs over the yellow legs and adjust the cuffs above the feet.

Dressing the Doll

  1. Slide the cream blouse over the body from the bottom before the head is fully tightened, or sew it open at the back and close after dressing.
  2. Position the floral front at the center of the chest.
  3. Pull the striped overalls over the legs and body.
  4. Center the brown bib over the embroidered blouse.
  5. Sew the back waist of the overalls to the body with small hidden stitches.
  6. Bring the shoulder straps over the blouse and secure with buttons.
  7. Sew the wings under the sleeves so they look like soft brown arms.

Decorative Daisies on Overalls

  • Use white yarn to make small straight stitches in groups of five petals.
  • Add yellow French-knot-style centers using duplicate stitch or tiny knots.
  • Place one daisy on the bib front.
  • Place one daisy on the lower front of the overalls.
  • Add two small green leaf stitches beside each flower.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the face first because it creates the character. The beak should be centered, the eyes should look glossy and even, and the eyebrows should give a gentle shy expression. Sew the sunflower and ladybug securely to the top of the head.

  • Place the sunflower on the upper right side of the duck’s head.
  • Place the ladybug on the upper left side.
  • Keep both decorations slightly forward so they show in front view.
  • Use matching yarn tails to hide all joining stitches.
  • Trim loose ends only after all parts are fully attached.

Arrange the accessories around the doll. The straw hat can rest beside one foot, the watering can can sit to one side, and the strawberry basket can sit on the other side. The crossbody basket should hang naturally from the brown strap.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if safety eyes, buttons, or structured accessories are used.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For long-term display, keep the doll in a dry place and avoid strong sunlight, which can fade green, yellow, and red yarn over time. If dust gathers on the surface, use a soft brush and move gently in the direction of the knitted stitches.

If the doll is given as a gift for a young child, replace safety eyes and buttons with embroidery. Remove wired parts from the watering can handle or spout. Always check seams after play, especially around the head, legs, straps, and small accessories.

Store the accessories together in a small cotton bag when not displayed. The hat brim, basket handles, and sunflower petals can flatten if pressed under heavy objects, so let each piece rest loosely with enough space around it.
