Crochet Tutorial: Gooseberry Pond Wooden Bridge Veggie Cottage – Free Crochet Pattern

Create a detailed crochet garden cottage scene with a pale green gooseberry-shaped house, layered leaf roof, wooden bridge, pond, vegetable beds, trellis, crates, flowers, letters, baskets, and a sweet goose family. This display pattern is worked as many small pieces joined onto a sturdy grass mat for a charming handmade cottage garden look.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Skill Level

This pattern is best for confident beginners to intermediate crocheters. Most parts use simple single crochet, increases, decreases, flat rows, and small amigurumi pieces. The final scene looks complex because many tiny details are layered together, but each individual part is made step by step.

Finished Size

  • Full base: about 18 in wide by 24 in long.
  • Cottage: about 8 in wide by 9 in tall, not including the stem.
  • Bridge: about 4.5 in wide by 8 in long.
  • Adult goose: about 4.5 in tall.
  • Baby gosling: about 2.5 in tall.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in grass green, light gooseberry green, dark green, medium green, cream, tan, brown, white, orange, red, yellow, pink, teal, gray blue, beige, and black.
  • 3.25 mm crochet hook for most pieces.
  • 2.75 mm crochet hook for flowers, letters, eyes, and tiny vegetables.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Small amount of cardboard or plastic canvas for the house base and bridge support.
  • Black felt or black yarn for heart window and eyes.
  • Optional craft wire for trellis vines and bridge rail vines.

Abbreviations

  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in same stitch
  • dec: single crochet 2 stitches together
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • MR: magic ring
  • FO: fasten off
  • RS: right side

Gauge

Using worsted weight yarn and a 3.25 mm hook, 16 sc and 18 rows should measure about 4 in. Gauge is not critical for this display, but tight stitches are important so the cottage, geese, and vegetables hold their shape neatly.

Pattern Notes

  • Work amigurumi parts in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to join.
  • Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round.
  • Stuff firmly but do not overstuff small pieces.
  • The entire scene is assembled on a rectangular grass mat, with the pond on the lower left, cottage on the upper left, vegetable garden on the right, and bridge crossing between the cottage and pond.
  • For a clean display, weave in ends as you finish each piece.

Grass Base Mat

The base is a sturdy rectangular crochet mat with a raised border. It supports every piece in the picture, so work tightly and evenly. You may sew the finished mat to felt or plastic canvas if you want a firmer display base.

Placement Guide

  • Place the cottage on the upper left third of the mat, leaving grass visible behind and beside it.
  • Sew the pond to the lower left corner, slightly overlapping visually with the bridge path.
  • Place the bridge diagonally from the cottage porch toward the lower center of the mat.
  • Sew vegetable beds on the right side, with the tomato bed closest to the goose.
  • Attach the trellis at the back right corner behind the beds.
  • Place crates and sign behind the garden beds.
  • Put the bench to the left of the cottage door.
  • Place the adult goose with green head patch near the tomatoes.
  • Place the second adult goose near the lower bridge entrance.
  • Place the two goslings near the lower right garden path, holding heart envelopes.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Before sewing everything permanently, arrange all pieces on the base and compare the scene from above. The cottage should feel large and cozy, the bridge should lead the eye toward the pond, and the vegetable beds should fill the right side with neat colorful rows.

  1. Sew the cottage down first through the flat base, using strong green or matching yarn.
  2. Sew the pond and bridge next, checking that the bridge slightly overlaps the pond edge.
  3. Attach large garden structures: trellis, soil beds, bench, sign, crates, and basket.
  4. Add geese, goslings, boots, letters, pots, flowers, lily pads, and vegetables last.
  5. For each goose face, use tiny black stitches for eyes and keep them even on both sides of the head.
  6. Shape wings and tails with a few hidden stitches so they curve naturally against the body.

Care Notes

This crochet cottage scene is best used as a display piece. Keep it away from pets, moisture, and direct sunlight. If the base bends over time, place it on a firm board or inside a shallow display tray.

  • Do not machine wash the full assembled scene.
  • Spot clean gently with a damp cloth.
  • Let the piece air dry fully before storing.
  • Avoid pulling on the trellis, bridge rails, leaves, or tiny vegetables.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The cottage is firmly sewn to the upper left of the mat.
  • The leaf roof has at least three overlapping layers.
  • The brown stem stands upright at the center top.
  • The cream arched door has a black heart window and brown knob.
  • Both side windows have curtain details.
  • The bridge has plank lines, side rails, vines, posts, and white flowers.
  • The pond includes lily pads, water flowers, and a fruit boat.
  • The right garden area includes tomatoes, pink root vegetables, yellow squash, cucumbers, crates, and trellis.
  • The goose family, envelopes, boots, bench, baskets, sign, and flower pots are attached securely.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, dust the cottage scene lightly with a soft brush. Work from the top leaves downward so dust does not settle into the stitch texture. For small stains, dab gently with cool water and mild soap, then blot dry with a towel.

Store the display in a breathable box with tissue paper around the bridge, trellis, and stem. Do not compress the leaf roof or geese. If the vegetables flatten, reshape them gently with your fingers after storage.

For long-term display, rotate the piece every few weeks if it sits near a window. This helps prevent uneven fading. Keep the scene flat and supported so the grass base, pond, and garden rows stay smooth and tidy.
