Pattern Overview

This pattern creates a soft knitted fox doll inspired by the image, with a rounded head, short body, slim arms, straight legs, detailed clothing, and small woodland accessories. The doll is worked with firm tension so the stuffing stays smooth and the knitted texture remains visible.

  • Finished size: About 11.5 in / 29 cm tall when made with DK yarn and 2.75 mm needles.
  • Construction: Body, head, arms, legs, tail, ears, shoes, clothing, bag, and carrot are knitted separately, stuffed where needed, then sewn together.
  • Skill level: Adventurous beginner to intermediate.
  • Main technique: Knitting in the round on DPNs or magic loop, simple shaping, basic cables, stripes, embroidery, and seaming.

Materials

  • DK weight yarn in rust orange for fox head, tail base, and patches.
  • DK weight yarn in cream for muzzle, cheeks, sweater, inner ears, tail tip, and toe markings.
  • DK weight yarn in warm brown for shoes, lower legs, nose base, and some pants patches.
  • DK weight yarn in teal blue for beret, cuffs, scarf stripes, and sleeve stripes.
  • DK weight yarn in sage green for scarf stripes, pants patches, and carrot leaves.
  • DK weight yarn in dusty blue, olive, tan, rose pink, muted gold, and gray for patchwork pants and small details.
  • Small amounts of black yarn for nose, mouth, eye accents, and paw lines.
  • Small amounts of white, yellow, and dark brown yarn for bee bag embroidery.
  • 2.75 mm knitting needles, DPNs or long circular needle for magic loop.
  • 2.5 mm needles for scarf, bag strap, and firmer small details.
  • Two 6 mm black safety eyes.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Two tiny wood-look buttons for shoes, about 6 mm wide.
  • Four removable stitch markers.
  • Cable needle.

Gauge and Fabric Notes

Use a firm gauge so the doll keeps its rounded shape. The knitted fabric should not stretch open when stuffed. If stuffing shows between stitches, use smaller needles. A good target is 7 stitches and 10 rounds per 1 in / 2.5 cm in stockinette worked in the round.

The image shows a handmade knitted texture with visible, close stitches. Do not knit loosely. Stuff the doll gradually in small pieces. Smooth the stuffing with your fingers after every few rounds so the face, body, legs, and tail stay even.

  • Fill the triangle with satin stitches until it looks rounded and raised.
  • Make one straight vertical stitch down from the nose for the mouth line.
  • Add two very small angled stitches below that line to create a soft fox mouth.
  • Add two tiny rust straight stitches above the eyes for subtle eyebrows, as seen in the image.

Fox Ears

The ears are pointed and sit at a slight outward angle. The outer ear is rust orange, and the inner ear is cream. One ear is partly covered by the beret, but both ears should still be knitted for balance.

Sweater Assembly

  • Sew front and back shoulder seams together.
  • Place sweater around the doll body, with the cable panel centered on the front.
  • Sew side seams from lower hem upward for 14 rows, leaving armholes open.
  • The sweater should cover the upper body and stop just above the top of the patchwork pants.
  • With cream yarn, sew a few hidden stitches at the back neck to keep the sweater from sliding.

Patchwork Pants Embroidery

The pants in the image have tiny embroidered flowers and scattered colored stitches over the knitted patch blocks. Add these after the body is stuffed and the sweater is fitted, so the embroidery placement stays visible.

  • On the viewer’s left pant leg, embroider three small cream flowers over the pale blue lower block.
  • Make each flower with five lazy-daisy stitches and one muted gold center stitch.
  • On the olive block, add two small pink knots and two cream straight stitches.
  • On the viewer’s right pant leg, embroider a yellow flower cluster on the green block.
  • Add three rose-pink knots, two cream leaf stitches, and one tiny blue knot near the side seam.
  • Keep all embroidery small, no taller than 4 knitted rows, so the pants still look like tiny patchwork fabric.

Fox Tail

The tail is large, curved, and visible beside the body. It has a rust-orange base and a cream pointed tip. Knit it firmly but not too stiff, then curve it gently before sewing.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 8 sts. Divide over needles and join in the round.

  15. Stuff firmly at the base and lightly at the cream tip.
  16. BO all sts, leaving a long tail for sewing.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Sew the tail to the back right side of the body, beginning at the lower sweater edge and ending near the hip. Curve the tail outward so the cream tip points to the side, like the tail shown in the image.

Brown Shoes

The shoes are rounded, brown, and sit over the bottom of the legs. Each shoe has a darker sole look, cream toe lines, a light trim edge, and one small button on the outer side.

Carrot Leaves

  1. With sage green yarn, pick up 6 sts around the top of the carrot.
  2. Knit 3 rows as a tiny i-cord over the first 2 sts, then BO those 2 sts.
  3. Rejoin yarn to the next 2 sts, knit 4 rows as i-cord, then BO.
  4. Rejoin yarn to the last 2 sts, knit 3 rows as i-cord, then BO.
  5. Use the yarn tails to pull the leaves together at the base.

Joining the Head to the Body

The fox head is large, so the neck must be stable. The sweater and scarf hide the join, but the seam still needs to be strong. Use the 24 live body neck stitches as a sewing guide.

  1. Place the head above the body with the muzzle centered over the sweater cable panel.
  2. Use rust or cream yarn, depending on the visible side of the seam.
  3. Sew through one body neck stitch and one lower head stitch at a time.
  4. Work around the neck twice for strength.
  5. Add extra stuffing into the neck before closing the final small opening.
  6. Check that the head sits upright and does not tilt backward.

Facial Shaping and Final Face Details

After the head is attached, shape the face gently. The photo has a sweet fox expression with rounded cheeks, a small black nose, and eyes that sit slightly inside the face.

  • Thread rust yarn through the back of the head, come out beside one eye, go across one stitch, then return to the back of the head.
  • Pull very gently to indent the eye. Tie securely and hide the knot.
  • Repeat for the second eye, keeping both eyes even.
  • Add one tiny white highlight stitch beside each safety eye if desired.
  • Brush the muzzle lightly with your fingers only. Do not use a wire brush.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  • Sew ears between Rnds 7 and 16 of the head, angled outward.
  • Sew the beret over the top of the head, slightly tilted to one side.
  • Attach the arms under the sweater shoulder line.
  • Sew the tail to the back hip and curve it to the side.
  • Fit shoes over the feet and add cream toe stitches.
  • Wrap the scarf around the neck and tack it neatly.
  • Place the round bee bag beside the doll or over one shoulder.
  • Set the carrot near the doll as a matching woodland prop.

Care Notes

Spot clean the doll with cool water and a soft cloth. Avoid soaking because the safety eyes, embroidered details, shoes, beret, and bag may shift if handled roughly. Press out moisture with a towel and let the doll air dry flat.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The fox head is round, rust orange, and larger than the body.
  • The cream muzzle is centered and softly raised.
  • The black nose is triangular and stitched firmly.
  • The teal beret sits at a slight angle with a cream bow.
  • The cream cable sweater covers the upper body.
  • The scarf has teal, blue, and green stripes.
  • The pants look patchwork with tiny flower embroidery.
  • The brown shoes have cream toe lines and side buttons.
  • The tail has a rust base and cream tip.
  • The bee bag and carrot are finished as separate accessories.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Keep the doll away from direct sunlight for long periods so the rust, teal, green, and cream yarn colors stay soft and even. Store it in a dry place, away from dust and moisture. If the scarf or beret becomes flattened, reshape it gently by hand.

For long-term display, place the fox on a clean shelf with the tail supported at the side. Do not hang the doll by the scarf or bag strap. The accessories are decorative and should be handled carefully, especially the tiny bow, shoe buttons, and embroidered bee.
