Free Crochet Pattern Details
This pattern is written in US crochet terms. The finished project is designed as a detailed display piece, not a toy for small children. The market stall is built as a soft log booth with a firm base, a raised counter, vertical poles, and a scalloped roof that resembles layered forest leaves.
The animals are made separately and sewn into the scene after the stall, baskets, path, mushrooms, and plants are complete. Use tight tension throughout so stuffing does not show. For the smallest details, use embroidery floss or split yarn and a smaller hook.
Finished Size
- Full forest base: about 14 in wide by 12 in deep.
- Log market stall: about 8.5 in wide, 4 in tall, and 4.5 in deep.
- Badger: about 4 in tall when seated.
- Squirrel: about 4.5 in tall including ears.
- Hedgehog: about 3 in tall.
- Owl on branch: about 6.5 in from roof to owl top.

Gauge and Stitch Texture
With a 3.5 mm hook and worsted yarn, 7 sc by 8 rows should measure about 2 in. With a 3.0 mm hook, 8 sc by 9 rounds should measure about 2 in. Gauge is not strict, but all pieces must be firm and compact.
The picture has a dense handmade look with visible ridges. To copy that texture, crochet the log stall in horizontal rows, use BLO rows on the roof, and add surface chains, bobbles, loops, and small appliques to make moss, grass, mushrooms, berries, and bark ridges.
Forest Display Base
The base is a flat rectangle with raised texture. It has a green forest floor, a blue stream in the front left corner, a brown path leading toward the market, clusters of moss, stones, ferns, and red mushrooms. Work the base first so every object can be placed correctly.

Border the base with one round of sc. Work 3 sc in each corner. Join with a sl st, FO, and weave in ends. Cut plastic canvas or cardboard to fit slightly inside the base. Make a second plain green rectangle using R1 to R32 without bobbles, place the insert between both layers, and sc around both layers to close.
Blue Stream Applique
The stream sits at the front left corner. Use blue yarn and a 3.0 mm hook. Work in rows, changing between blue and light blue as desired.
- R1: Ch 18, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc 4, hdc 5, dc 4, hdc 2, sc 2. Turn. 17 sts.
- R2: Ch 1, inc, sc 3, hdc 4, dc 5, hdc 2, sc 1, inc. Turn. 19 sts.
- R3: Ch 1, sc 2, hdc 5, dc 5, hdc 4, sc 3. Turn. 19 sts.

- R5: Ch 1, sc 3, hdc 4, dc 3, hdc 4, sc 3. FO, leaving a long tail.
With light blue yarn, surface crochet 3 wavy lines across the stream. Each line should be 10 to 14 sl sts long. Sew the stream to the front left corner of the base, placing the lower edge about 1 in from the front and left borders.
Brown Footpath
Use medium brown yarn. The path is narrow at the stall and wider at the front, like the picture.
- R1: Ch 7, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Turn. 6 sts.
- R2: Ch 1, sc across. Turn. 6 sts.
- R3: Ch 1, inc, sc 4, inc. Turn. 8 sts.
- R4: Ch 1, sc across. Turn. 8 sts.
- R5: Ch 1, inc, sc 6, inc. Turn. 10 sts.
- R6 to R12: Ch 1, sc across. Turn. 10 sts.
- R13: Ch 1, inc, sc 8, inc. Turn. 12 sts.
- R14 to R18: Ch 1, sc across. FO.
Sew the narrow end near the market counter and the wider end toward the front edge. Add dark brown surface crochet lines, each 6 to 12 sl sts long, to imitate a textured bark walkway.
Small Stones
Make 14 stones in gray, beige, and tan. Use a 3.0 mm hook.
- R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
- R2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts.
- R3: Sc around. 12 sts.
- R4: Dec 6 times. 6 sts.
Stuff lightly, close the hole, and flatten slightly. Sew stones beside the stream, beside the path, and around the mushrooms.
Log Forest Market Stall
The market stall in the image looks like a hollow log lying horizontally. It has brown ridged bark, beige circular cut ends, a dark open interior, and a cream counter shelf holding honey, jam, and small goods. The log is open at the front so the badger can sit inside.
Log Body Outer Panel
Use dark brown yarn and a 3.5 mm hook. Work in rows. The ridges are made with BLO rows.
- R1: Ch 41, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Turn. 40 sts.
- R2: Ch 1, BLO sc in each st across. Turn. 40 sts.
- R3: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. 40 sts.
- R4: Ch 1, BLO sc in each st across. Turn. 40 sts.
- R5 to R26: Repeat R3 and R4, ending with a BLO row. 40 sts.
- R27: Ch 1, sc in each st across. FO, leaving a 24 in tail.
This rectangle forms the arched bark shell. Lay it over a curved plastic canvas strip about 8.5 in wide and 5 in deep. Sew the long back edge to the base first, then curve the panel forward to create the roof and side walls of the hollow log.
Dark Interior Panel
Use black or very dark brown yarn. This panel sits inside the back wall to create the shadowed market opening.
- R1: Ch 35, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Turn. 34 sts.
- R2 to R16: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. 34 sts.
- R17: Ch 1, sc in each st across. FO.
Sew this panel inside the arched log, centered against the back wall. Keep the lower edge 0.5 in above the base so the counter can cover the join.

Cut a 7.75 in by 1.25 in strip of plastic canvas. Fold the crochet counter around it and seam the long edge closed. Sew it horizontally across the log opening, about 1.5 in above the base. The badger should peek over this shelf.
Bark Ridges and Moss on Log
Use medium brown yarn to add raised ridges. Join yarn at one log end, ch 28, sl st along the log panel following the rows, then FO. Make 8 raised chains across the front and top of the log.
- Make 3 long ridges across the front, each 30 to 34 sl sts.
- Make 3 curved ridges over the roof, each 26 to 32 sl sts.
- Make 2 short ridges near the right opening, each 12 to 16 sl sts.
For moss, use moss green yarn. Attach yarn anywhere on the log roof. Work ch 5, sl st in same spot, ch 7, sl st in same spot, ch 4, sl st in same spot. FO. Make 8 moss tufts across the top and sides. Sew small loose strands of olive yarn over them for the wild fuzzy look.

Use dark green yarn. Surface crochet 5 long veins from the back center to the front scallops.
- Center vein: 34 sl sts.
- Left inner vein: 24 sl sts.
- Right inner vein: 24 sl sts.
- Left outer vein: 18 sl sts.
- Right outer vein: 18 sl sts.
Sew the back edge of the roof to the upper back of the log. Let the scalloped edge hang forward. Insert two wrapped poles at the front corners before sewing the front edge down.

Add a tiny white label and embroider a short price mark such as 3c or 5c. Place it on the left side of the counter near the badger.
Mushrooms, Ferns, Moss, and Forest Details
The image has many small forest decorations. These details make the market feel full and magical. Place them in clusters rather than spreading them evenly. The front corners, around the stream, and behind the log should look especially mossy.
Red Spotted Mushrooms
Make 5 mushrooms with white stems and red caps.
Mushroom Stem
- R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
- R2 to R5: Sc around. 6 sts.
- R6: Sc 1, inc; repeat around. 9 sts. FO.
Mushroom Cap
- R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.

- R3: Sc 1, inc; repeat around. 18 sts.
- R4: Sc around. 18 sts.
- R5: FLO sc 1, dec; repeat around. 12 sts. FO.
Sew the cap to the stem. With white yarn, embroider 5 small dots on each red cap. Sew mushrooms near the stream, along the right side of the path, and beside the log.
Tiny Yellow and Green Mushrooms
Make 6 tiny mushrooms. Stem: ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and next 2 ch, FO. Cap: 5 hdc in MR, pull tight, FO. Sew cap to stem, then sew to the base in small groups.
Fern Leaves
Make 6 ferns in light green. Ch 16. Starting in the 2nd ch from hook, sl st 1, then repeat the following down the chain: ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc 1, hdc 1, sl st 1, sl st into next main chain. Continue until the end.
For larger ferns, start with ch 22 and make 9 side leaves. Sew ferns at the front edge and left side, angled outward like the leafy plants in the picture.
Moss Clumps
Use moss green, olive, and yellow-green yarn. Make 15 clumps.
- Ch 6, sl st into first ch to form a loop.
- Ch 8, sl st into same base.
- Ch 5, sl st into same base.
- Ch 7, sl st into same base.
- FO and leave a sewing tail.
Sew moss clumps to the log roof, around the left end of the log, under the branch, around mushrooms, and around the stream. Use more than one shade in each area for a wild woodland texture.
Placement Guide
Before sewing everything permanently, place all pieces on the base. The log market should sit toward the back center, with the opening facing forward. The stream belongs at the front left, the path begins near the counter, and the animals gather in front of the stall.
- Place the log stall 1.5 in from the back edge and centered left to right.
- Place the badger inside the log, behind the counter, with the head visible above the shelf.
- Place the squirrel in front of the counter, slightly right of center, facing the badger.
- Place the hedgehog on the right side of the path, holding or standing beside the berry basket.
- Place baskets in a curved row in front of the market.
- Place acorn baskets on the left, berry basket in the middle, pumpkin basket on the right.
- Place honey and jam jars on the counter to the badger’s right.
- Place the owl branch behind the right roof pole and angle the branch over the roof.
- Place the largest moss clumps on top of the log and at the roof corners.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Sew every main structure with strong hidden stitches. Attach the base of the log first, then the end circles, counter, canopy, poles, and branch. After the stall is stable, sew the animals and market goods in place.
- Use black embroidery floss for tiny noses, mouths, and eye highlights.
- Add a small white stitch beside each black eye for shine.
- Brush the hedgehog loops lightly with your fingers, not a comb.
- Shape the squirrel tail into a firm curl before sewing the bottom edge down.
- Secure jars, baskets, and mushrooms with several stitches so they do not tip over.
For the badger face, keep the white center stripe clear. The black patches should angle downward toward the cheeks. For the squirrel, keep the eyes high and the belly patch centered. For the owl, place the eye disks close together for the sweet round expression shown in the image.
Care Notes
- Keep the finished forest market as a display piece on a shelf, desk, or craft table.
- Do not machine wash because the base, poles, branch, and cardboard supports may bend.
- Spot clean with a soft damp cloth and mild soap only when needed.
- Let the piece air dry completely before storing.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The log stall is centered and opens toward the front.
- The leafy canopy has scallops along the front edge.
- The badger is visible behind the cream counter.
- The squirrel has a curled tail and green backpack.
- The hedgehog has textured spines and a berry basket.
- The owl is perched on a crooked branch above the roof.
- There are at least 5 baskets, 2 labeled jars, pumpkins, acorns, berries, mushrooms, moss, ferns, stones, a path, and a blue stream.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
To preserve the shape, lift the project from the firm base rather than pulling the log, roof, animals, or branch. Dust it with a soft brush every few weeks. If any moss loops flatten, gently lift them with your fingers and reshape them by hand.
Store the woodland market away from direct sunlight to protect the greens, orange, red, and blue from fading. If storing long term, place it in a breathable cotton bag or a box with tissue paper around the branch and animals. Avoid crushing the roof scallops and squirrel tail.
