This cozy tabby cat knitting pattern creates a soft autumn doll with a gray striped cat face, rounded cream muzzle, bright green eyes, a cream pom-pom hat, a red textured cardigan, striped scarf, blue overalls, brown sandals, and a tiny golden shoulder bag. The finished doll is designed as a seated keepsake toy with layered handmade details and warm fall colors.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Finished height: About 11 inches from feet to top of hat, including pom-poms.
  • Seated body height: About 9 inches without pom-poms.
  • Head width: About 4 inches across the cheeks.
  • Body style: Soft knitted tabby cat doll with rounded head, short arms, plump legs, layered clothing, and removable-looking accessories sewn securely in place.

Skill Level

This pattern is written for confident beginners and intermediate knitters. The body uses simple shaping, stockinette stitch, ribbing, stripes, seaming, embroidery, and small accessories. Most pieces are knitted flat and seamed, which keeps the construction approachable for newer knitters.

Materials

  • Sport weight or light DK yarn in gray, cream, white, denim blue, deep red, mustard yellow, brown, tan, red, green, and small amounts of dark gray.
  • US size 3 knitting needles, or size needed to match gauge.
  • US size 2 knitting needles for ribbing and tighter accessory edges.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Two 12 mm green safety eyes, or embroidered eyes if making for a young child.
  • Small wooden heart buttons, 4 for the cardigan and 1 small button for the bag flap.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Stitch holders or scrap yarn.
  • Two small pom-poms made from cream yarn, or a pom-pom maker.
  • Black, brown, and white embroidery yarn for facial details and hat motifs.
  • Optional: removable stitch markers for counting shaping rows.

Gauge

In stockinette stitch using US size 3 needles, 24 stitches and 32 rows should measure about 4 inches. Gauge is not critical for a decorative doll, but a firm knitted fabric is important so the stuffing does not show through. If your fabric is loose, use smaller needles.

General Notes Before You Begin

The cat is made from separate pieces, then stuffed and assembled. The head is slightly oversized compared with the body, matching the soft toy proportions in the image. The arms are short and rounded, the legs are thick with white paws, and the outfit sits snugly over the body.

Work all body pieces with a tight tension. Leave long yarn tails when binding off because they will be used for sewing seams. Stuff gradually and firmly, but do not overstuff the face. The cat should look rounded and soft, not stretched.

Color changes for tabby markings are made with embroidery after knitting. This keeps the face smooth and allows the stripes to be placed exactly like the image: darker vertical stripes on the forehead, soft gray side cheeks, cream center face, and a cream rounded muzzle.

Part 1: Head

Use gray yarn for the main head. The head is knitted flat from the lower back of the neck upward, shaped into a rounded oval, then seamed at the back. The cream face panel is worked separately and sewn over the front.

Rounded Muzzle Pads

The muzzle is made from two separate cream ovals placed side by side. They should sit below the eyes and create the sweet puffy cat cheeks.

  1. Make 2. With cream yarn, CO 6 sts.

  6. Row 10: Purl all sts.
  7. BO all sts, leaving a long sewing tail.

Lightly stuff each muzzle pad. Sew them side by side on the lower face panel, touching in the center. Use tan yarn to embroider a small vertical line between the pads and a soft inverted Y shape for the mouth.

Eyes and Face Details

  • Place safety eyes between Rows 12 and 15 of the head, spaced about 9 sts apart.
  • If embroidering eyes, make two large green circles with black centers and a tiny white highlight stitch at the upper outside edge.
  • Use dark gray yarn to embroider three short vertical tabby stripes from the hat line down the forehead.
  • Use shorter dark gray lines on each cheek, angled slightly toward the muzzle.
  • Use tan or light brown yarn for the nose, making 5 to 6 horizontal satin stitches, then one short vertical stitch below.
  • Add two tiny white stitches beside the eyes for a bright handmade expression.

Part 2: Ears

Part 5: Arms and White Paws

The arms are cream at the paws and red at the sleeves. Each arm hangs down from the cardigan sleeve with a small white paw visible at the end.

  1. Make 2. With white yarn, CO 8 sts.

Seam each arm. Stuff the lower paw lightly and the sleeve softly. Embroider two tiny gray lines on each paw. Sew arms to the body at shoulder height, slightly under the cardigan fronts, with the paws pointing downward.

Part 6: Blue Overalls

The overalls are knitted in denim blue and fitted over the body and legs. They include rounded pants, a front bib, shoulder straps, and a small center pocket. The pants should sit high on the belly, just below the scarf.

  6. Rows 32 to 35: Work k1, p1 rib for cuff.
  7. BO all sts.
  8. Rejoin yarn to right leg side and work the same.

Overall Pants Back

  1. Repeat the same as the front, but work Rows 5 to 22 before splitting for the legs. This makes the back slightly taller for better coverage.
  2. Seam front and back at the side edges.
  3. Seam the inner leg edges around the doll legs, leaving the overalls fitted but not tight.

Bib

  1. With denim blue yarn, CO 14 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 2: Knit all sts for a garter edge.
  3. Rows 3 to 14: Work in stockinette stitch.
  4. Rows 15 to 16: Knit all sts.

  6. Repeat Rows 1 to 4 until the strip measures the same length as the cardigan front.
  7. BO all sts.

Sew one strip beside each garter band. Sew the cardigan shoulders, attach sleeves, and seam the sleeve and side edges. Place the cardigan on the doll and secure it with a few hidden stitches at the shoulders and side seams.

Sew four small wooden heart buttons along the front band opposite the button loops. If the cardigan will not be removed, the buttons may be sewn directly through both fronts to hold the jacket closed in the same relaxed open shape shown in the picture.

Part 8: Striped Scarf

The scarf is narrow, soft, and wrapped once around the neck. It has cream and deep red horizontal stripes, with one short end hanging down the front.

  1. With cream yarn and US size 2 needles, CO 8 sts.

  12. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull closed, and seam the back.

Fold the ribbed brim upward so it forms a thick cream band across the forehead. Place the hat slightly low, just touching the top of the eyes and partly covering the ear bases.

Hat Embroidery

  • Use brown yarn to embroider one centered snowflake on the front brim. Make one vertical stitch, one horizontal stitch, and two diagonal stitches crossing at the center.
  • Use white yarn to embroider smaller snowflakes on each side of the brown motif.
  • Keep the stitches shallow so they do not distort the brim.

Pom-Poms

  1. Make 2 small cream pom-poms, each about 1 inch wide.
  2. Trim them round but leave the yarn ends long.
  3. Sew one pom-pom on each side of the hat crown, spaced evenly above the ears.

Part 12: Small Knitted Mitten Charm

The image shows a tiny cream knitted accessory beside the bag, decorated with red and green stitches. This charm is made like a miniature mitten or soft pouch and is attached near the bag strap.

  8. For the thumb, pick up 4 sts on one side, knit 4 rows, then thread yarn through the sts and close.

Embroider two tiny red diamond stitches and two green V stitches on the mitten charm. Sew it near the bag or attach it to the doll’s side with a short mustard yarn tie.

Part 13: Tabby Stripes and Fur Shading

The tabby markings bring the doll close to the pictured character. Use small, controlled embroidery stitches rather than long loose floats. This keeps the face clean and handmade.

  • On the forehead, embroider 3 dark gray vertical stripes starting under the hat brim. The center stripe should be longest.
  • On each side of the face, add 2 short angled cheek stripes, pointing toward the muzzle.
  • On the top of the head, add 2 very short gray stitches near each ear if visible below the hat.
  • On the outer arms or lower body, add only minimal shading, because most of the doll is covered by clothing.
  • Use cream yarn to soften the center bridge between the eyes if needed.

Part 14: Tail

The tail is mostly hidden behind the clothes and bag, but a small tabby tail helps the doll feel complete. Knit it in gray with dark stripes, then curve it gently behind the cardigan.

  1. With gray yarn, CO 8 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 28: Work in stockinette stitch.
  3. BO all sts, leaving a long tail for seaming.
  4. Seam into a narrow tube and stuff lightly.
  5. Use dark gray yarn to wrap or embroider 5 short bands around the tail.
  6. Sew the tail to the back lower body, curving it to one side so it peeks near the bag.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Sew the head securely to the body first, then attach the legs, arms, ears, cardigan, overalls, scarf, hat, sandals, bag, and mitten charm. Check the seated balance before closing final seams. The doll should sit upright with the feet pointing forward and the bag resting at one side.

  • Shape the cheeks by gently pinching the muzzle pads while sewing.
  • Place the scarf after the cardigan so it overlaps naturally.
  • Keep the hat brim low but do not cover the eyes.
  • Angle the ears outward so they remain visible beside the hat.
  • Sew accessories with hidden stitches for a clean finished look.

Care Notes

Spot clean the doll with cool water and mild soap. Do not soak if you used wooden buttons, safety eyes, or glued embellishments. Gently press with a towel and reshape while damp. Let the doll air dry flat away from direct heat or bright sunlight.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is round, full, and slightly larger than the body.
  • The cream muzzle is centered and softly stuffed.
  • The green eyes are even and bright.
  • The red cardigan has 4 heart buttons and textured front bands.
  • The scarf has cream and red stripes and is tacked in place.
  • The blue overalls include a bib, pocket, cuffs, and straps.
  • The cream hat has a folded ribbed brim, embroidery, and 2 pom-poms.
  • The yellow bag has a flap, strap, and green leaf detail.
  • The sandals have brown soles, straps, and tiny flower accents.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished cat doll in a dry place with good airflow. Keep it away from heavy objects that may flatten the pom-poms, hat brim, muzzle, or bag. If the doll is displayed seasonally, wrap it loosely in acid-free tissue or clean cotton fabric before storage.

To refresh the shape, lightly fluff the pom-poms with your fingers and smooth the cardigan, scarf, and overalls by hand. Do not iron the doll. If dust gathers on the knitted fabric, use a soft dry brush and work gently in the direction of the stitches.

For long-term preservation, check the buttons and accessory stitches occasionally. Tighten any loose threads with a tapestry needle. Keep the doll away from pets, damp shelves, and strong sunlight so the cream, red, blue, and mustard colors remain warm and clear.
