The Maple Leaf Inn Autumn Train Playset is a detailed crochet woodland scene featuring a tall tree-trunk inn, a round upper lodge, oversized maple leaf roof, balcony railing, tiny doors and windows, a blue creek, bridge, train engine, cargo wagons, baskets of pumpkins and berries, mushrooms, acorns, ladders, fences, and small woodland friends including a badger conductor, fox, rabbit, squirrel, and bear cub.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Skill Level
This pattern is best for confident beginners to intermediate crocheters. Most pieces use basic amigurumi shaping, flat crochet panels, surface slip stitch embroidery, and simple sewing. Work slowly, count every round, and pin each piece before attaching so the whole playset keeps the same cozy proportions shown in the picture.
- Finished size: about 18 in wide, 18 in deep, and 18 to 20 in tall when made with worsted weight yarn and a 3.25 mm hook.
- Gauge: 6 sc x 6 rounds = 1 in in firm amigurumi crochet.
- Construction: base mat first, then trunk, upper inn, maple leaf roof, balcony, details, train, animals, and scenery.
Materials
- Worsted weight yarn in tan, dark brown, medium brown, rust, orange, red, brick red, golden yellow, moss green, grass green, cream, black, white, gray, blue, turquoise, berry red, pumpkin orange, and soft pink.
- 3.25 mm crochet hook for amigurumi pieces.
- 4.00 mm crochet hook for the base mat, bridge, and leaves if you want a slightly looser flat fabric.
- Fiberfill stuffing.
- Plastic canvas or firm cardboard for the base, bridge, balcony floor, train cars, and sign backs.
- Yarn needle, stitch markers, pins, scissors, and fabric glue if desired.
- Small safety eyes, 6 mm to 8 mm, or black yarn for embroidered eyes.
- Optional wire or pipe cleaners for the curved roof leaf tips, chimney bend, and ladder strength.

Important Notes Before You Start
Use tight tension for the inn, animals, train, mushrooms, pumpkins, and acorns. Use slightly relaxed tension only for the large maple leaves and the base mat. The photo shows a soft sculptural playset, so every major piece should be firm enough to stand but still plush.
The trunk is taller than it is wide, with twisted root ridges running upward. The inn room sits like a round cabin around the top of the trunk. The roof is not a smooth cone; it is built from large overlapping maple leaves in red, rust, and orange.
The finished scene looks best when the front bridge and train are placed near the viewer, the creek curves along the left side, and the ladder climbs on the right. Keep the main trunk centered but slightly behind the front bridge so the inn has depth.
Base Mat
Use moss green and the 4.00 mm hook. The base is a rectangle with a raised border, grass texture, a curved blue creek, and small dirt paths. Crochet the mat tightly enough to hold its shape, then sew it around a plastic canvas rectangle.
Large Rectangular Ground
- Ch 81.
- Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. 80 sc.
- Rows 2 to 56: Ch 1, turn, sc across. 80 sc.

- Border Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each stitch around, placing 3 sc in each corner stitch. Join and FO.
Cut plastic canvas slightly smaller than the mat. Make a second plain rectangle exactly the same size if you want a fully enclosed base. Sandwich the canvas between the two layers and whipstitch around with moss green.
Curved Creek
The creek in the picture runs from the back left, curves toward the front center, then disappears behind leaves and pumpkins. Make it as a shaped applique and sew it to the mat.
- With turquoise, ch 46.
- Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc 12, hdc 12, dc 8, hdc 7, sc 5. 45 sts.

Care Notes
Spot clean only with cool water and mild soap. Do not machine wash the full playset because the tree, bridge, train, and balcony include shaped pieces. Press gently with a towel and air dry flat away from direct sunlight.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The tree trunk stands firmly and does not lean.
- The upper inn is centered on the trunk.
- The maple leaves overlap and hang over the cabin wall.
- The balcony rails are secure.
- The train and wagons are sewn or placed neatly along the front.
- The creek, bridge, ladder, mushrooms, pumpkins, acorns, and fences are all attached.
- All animal faces are embroidered securely and safely.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Keep the playset on a flat shelf or table when displayed. To remove dust, use a soft brush and work from the roof down to the base. Avoid pulling on leaf points, balcony posts, ladder rungs, or tiny harvest pieces.
If storing the playset, wrap it loosely in acid-free tissue or clean cotton fabric. Do not compress the maple roof. Store small animals and loose accessories in a separate breathable pouch so the details stay neat for the next autumn display.
