Crochet Tutorial: Duck Family Picnic Playset – Free Crochet Pattern

This cheerful crochet playset recreates a duck family picnic scene with two parent ducks, three fluffy ducklings, a red-and-cream picnic blanket, tiny food pieces, baskets, a round pie, flowers, a pond with a small bridge, a wooden-style fence, leafy shrubs, a gazebo, and a little “Duck Family Picnic” sign.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern uses US crochet terms and is designed as a display playset. The finished scene is a round garden base with raised grassy edging, a blue pond on the front right, a cream-and-red picnic blanket on the left, a gazebo in the back center, and a curved fence around the outer edge.

The duck family includes one mother duck wearing a pale blue apron and a straw-style sun hat, one father duck wearing a brown vest and teal neck detail, and three small yellow ducklings. The accessories are intentionally tiny, so work slowly, stuff firmly, and shape each piece as you sew.

Finished Size

  • Full round playset: about 12 in / 30.5 cm across.
  • Parent ducks: about 3.75 to 4.25 in / 9.5 to 10.8 cm tall.
  • Ducklings: about 1.25 to 1.5 in / 3.2 to 3.8 cm tall.
  • Gazebo: about 4.5 in / 11.5 cm tall.
  • Fence height: about 1 in / 2.5 cm.

Skill Level

This is an adventurous beginner to intermediate amigurumi pattern. You should know how to work in continuous rounds, increase, decrease, change colors, crochet flat rows, sew small parts, and embroider simple facial details.

Materials

  • Worsted weight cotton or cotton blend yarn in grass green, light green, white, cream, yellow, orange, tan, brown, pale blue, red, pink, lavender, purple, black, gray, and small amounts of assorted food colors.

  • 3.5 mm crochet hook for the base, blanket, pond, shrubs, and gazebo.
  • 6 mm black safety eyes for parent ducks, or black embroidery thread.
  • 4 mm black safety eyes or French knots for ducklings.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Small amount of plastic canvas or firm cardboard for the base and sign, optional.
  • Hot glue or fabric glue, optional for display-only finishing.

Abbreviations in US Terms

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec: single crochet 2 stitches together
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • st: stitch
  • rnd: round
  • FO: fasten off

Gauge and Texture Notes

Gauge is not strict, but tight stitches are important because the scene has many stuffed pieces. With a 3.0 mm hook and worsted cotton, 6 sc rounds should measure about 1 in / 2.5 cm across when worked tightly in a magic ring.

The photo has a soft amigurumi texture with visible, even stitches. Use a slightly smaller hook than your yarn label recommends. Stuff parent duck heads and bodies firmly, ducklings lightly, and flat garden details very lightly or not at all.

Main Round Garden Base

The playset base is a thick round disk in grass green. It has a raised outer rim and a slightly textured lawn. Make two circles, insert firm support between them if desired, then crochet them together.

Bottom Circle

  1. With grass green and 3.5 mm hook, rnd 1: 8 sc in MR. Do not join. Place marker. 8 sts.
  2. Rnd 2: inc in each st around. 16 sts.

Top Circle

  1. Repeat rnds 1 to 15 of the bottom circle in grass green.
  2. Do not fasten off after rnd 15.
  3. Place the top and bottom circles wrong sides together. If using plastic canvas or cardboard, cut a 10.75 in / 27 cm circle and place it between the layers.
  4. Working through both layers, rnd 16: sc in each st around. 120 sts.
  5. Rnd 17: BLO sc in each st around to create a vertical rim. 120 sts.
  6. Rnd 18: sc in each st around. 120 sts.
  7. Rnd 19: sl st loosely in each st around. FO and weave in end.

Raised Grass Tufts Around the Rim

The base in the image has a nubby green border and little mounds of grass around the pond, bridge, blanket, and shrubs. These details make the display look soft and garden-like.

  • Join light green at any outer rim stitch.
  • Repeat around the front and sides: ch 3, sl st in second ch from hook, sl st in next ch, sl st into next rim stitch.
  • For thicker tufts, make 3 sc in one rim stitch, ch 3, sl st back down the ch, then sl st into the next rim stitch.
  • Add random tufts beside the blanket and pond after the large pieces are sewn down.

Blue Pond and Stream Section

The pond sits on the front right of the base. It curves like a little stream, beginning near the center right and widening toward the front edge. Use light blue yarn and shape it with increases on one side.

  1. With light blue and 3.5 mm hook, ch 18.
  2. Row 1: sc in second ch from hook, sc 16. Ch 1, turn. 17 sts.

  13. Border: work sc evenly around the whole pond, placing 2 sc in outer corners and 3 sc in the widest front curve.
  14. Second border: with white, sl st around the edge for a soft water highlight. FO.

Sew the pond to the front right of the base. Keep the lower edge close to the green rim and leave enough space for the small arched bridge to sit across the narrow upper part.

Small Arched Bridge

The bridge in the photo is tan, slightly arched, and crosses the blue water near the front right. It has a few pale blue embroidered stitches to look like stepping stones or highlights.

  1. With tan and 3.0 mm hook, ch 13.
  2. Row 1: sc in second ch from hook, sc 11. Ch 1, turn. 12 sts.
  3. Row 2: sc 2, hdc 2, dc 4, hdc 2, sc 2. Ch 1, turn.
  4. Row 3: sc 12. Ch 1, turn.
  5. Row 4: sc 2, hdc 2, dc 4, hdc 2, sc 2. FO, leaving a long tail.
  6. Bridge posts, make 4: with brown, ch 4, sc in second ch from hook, sc 2. FO.
  7. Sew two posts to each side of the bridge. Bend the bridge slightly as you sew it over the pond.
  8. Embroider 5 tiny light blue straight stitches across the top surface.

Red and Cream Picnic Blanket

The blanket is a rectangle with a checkerboard look. The photo shows cream and warm red squares, a cream border, and the blanket placed at a slight diagonal on the left front side.

Checker Blanket Center

Use tapestry crochet or sew small squares together. The sewn-square method is easier and gives a raised, handmade texture like the image.

  1. Make 12 small squares total: 6 cream and 6 red.
  2. For each square, ch 7.
  3. Row 1: sc in second ch from hook, sc 5. Ch 1, turn. 6 sts.
  4. Rows 2 to 6: sc 6. FO.
  5. Arrange squares in 3 rows of 4 squares, alternating red and cream.
  6. Sew the squares together with whipstitch through back loops only.

Blanket Border

  1. Join cream in any corner.
  2. Round 1: sc evenly around, placing 3 sc in each corner.
  3. Round 2: sc in each st around, placing 3 sc in each corner again.

  • For a grass tuft, ch 4, sl st in second ch and next 2 ch, then sl st into the base.
  • For a tiny white flower, 5 sc in MR with white and add a yellow French knot center.
  • For a red mushroom or berry, 5 sc in MR with red, sc around once, dec closed, then sew beside the grill.
  • For a yellow flower cluster, make 6 sc in MR and sew to back garden area.

Placement Map

Before sewing permanently, place every piece on the base and compare the scene from the front. The photo has the gazebo in the back center, mother duck left of center, father duck right of center, and the pond at the front right.

  1. Place the picnic blanket on the left front quadrant, angled slightly.
  2. Place the pond on the right front quadrant with the bridge across its upper middle.
  3. Place the gazebo behind the duck family, centered toward the back.
  4. Place mother duck on the left side of the blanket, facing slightly inward.
  5. Place father duck to the right of the blanket beside the grill, facing inward.
  6. Place one duckling near mother duck, one in the center of the blanket, and one near the grill.
  7. Place pie in the center of the blanket and sandwiches near the front edge.
  8. Place baskets at the lower left and lower right areas of the blanket.
  9. Place the grill on the grass between father duck and the blanket.
  10. Place shrubs on the back left and flowers along the back and side fence.
  11. Place the sign at the front left, outside the blanket but inside the fence.
  12. Attach the fence around the outer edge last so it frames all the details.

Sewing Order

A stable sewing order helps the playset stay neat. Use long yarn tails whenever possible and sew with small invisible stitches. Tie knots on the underside of the base when you can reach them.

  1. Sew the pond to the base first.
  2. Sew the blanket to the base second.
  3. Sew the bridge over the pond.
  4. Sew the gazebo floor, posts, railings, and roof in place.
  5. Sew shrubs and larger flower clusters to the back.
  6. Sew mother duck, father duck, and ducklings in place.
  7. Sew the grill, baskets, pie, sandwiches, cups, and treats to the blanket and grass.
  8. Sew the stones, daisies, tulips, and extra grass tufts.
  9. Sew the sign near the front edge.
  10. Attach the fence around the outside edge.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Add the final facial details after the ducks are fully attached. Embroider a tiny black stitch at each outer eye corner if you want a softer expression. Use orange yarn to add one short line under each beak, creating a sweet smile without changing the rounded duck face.

Check the tilt of the mother duck’s hat and the father duck’s vest before securing the last stitches. The mother should look picnic-ready and seated near the blanket, while the father should appear to be standing by the grill. Keep the ducklings close together for a family look.

Care Notes

This playset is best used as a decorative handmade item. If made for a child, replace safety eyes with embroidery and sew every small accessory firmly. Do not leave loose food pieces, stones, or flowers unattached for very young children.

Spot clean with cool water and mild soap. Press gently with a towel and reshape by hand. Let the playset dry flat in a shaded area. Avoid machine washing because the gazebo, fence, sign, and small picnic accessories may bend or shift.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Base: round, firm, green, with raised rim.
  • Pond: blue, front right, bordered and crossed by tan bridge.
  • Blanket: red and cream checker pattern, angled on left front.
  • Ducks: two white parent ducks and three yellow ducklings.
  • Mother duck: pale blue apron, tan hat, orange beak and feet.
  • Father duck: brown vest, teal strap, orange beak and feet.
  • Gazebo: tan posts and railings with brown peaked roof.
  • Accessories: baskets, pie, sandwiches, cups, ball, grill, stones, sign.
  • Garden: daisies, tulips, shrubs, grass tufts, curved fence.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, store the playset in a dust-free display box or on a shelf away from direct sunlight. Cotton yarn can fade over time, especially pale blue, yellow, pink, and lavender details.

Use a soft brush to remove dust from the gazebo roof, fence, flowers, and duck hats. For deeper cleaning, dampen a cloth with cool water and dab the surface. Do not rub the embroidered sign or small food pieces.

If the bridge, fence, or gazebo posts bend, reshape them gently with your fingers while slightly damp. Let the piece dry completely before placing it back on display. Avoid heavy objects on top of the playset so the raised picnic scene stays dimensional.
