Crochet Tutorial: Woodland Bakery Miniature Shop – Free Crochet Pattern

This woodland bakery miniature shop is a cozy crochet diorama with a mossy round cottage, open bark-textured doors, a glowing bakery counter, tiny shelves of bread, mushrooms, flowers, stones, greenery, a baker bear inside, and a squirrel customer pulling a wagon of baguettes. The finished scene is designed as a soft tabletop display with layered crochet textures, sturdy shaping, and many small woodland bakery details.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Full base: about 16 in / 40.5 cm across.
  • Bakery building: about 11 in / 28 cm wide, 8.5 in / 21.5 cm tall, and 7 in / 18 cm deep.
  • Door opening: about 5 in / 12.5 cm wide and 4.25 in / 11 cm tall.
  • Squirrel: about 3.75 in / 9.5 cm tall while seated.
  • Baker bear: about 2.75 in / 7 cm tall.
  • Small table: about 4 in / 10 cm long.

Skill Level

Intermediate. A confident beginner can make the small foods, flowers, rocks, and mushrooms first. The bakery building uses shaping, wire or plastic canvas support, textured stitches, and careful assembly. Work slowly, pin pieces before sewing, and check the opening often so the cottage keeps its rounded woodland shape.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in moss green, olive green, dark forest green, tan, warm beige, bark brown, dark brown, cream, white, red, burgundy, orange, golden yellow, soft pink, lavender, gray, charcoal, pale blue, and small scraps for pastries.
  • DK weight yarn for tiny bakery foods, flowers, mushroom spots, and lettering.
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook for the base and cottage.
  • 2.75 mm crochet hook for animals, foods, flowers, vines, mushrooms, and small details.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Plastic canvas, firm felt, or thin craft foam for the base, walls, doors, roof, shelves, and table support.
  • Optional floral wire or pipe cleaners for mushroom stems, plant stalks, door edges, and the wagon handle.
  • Yarn needle, stitch markers, scissors, pins, and embroidery needle.
  • Two 6 mm safety eyes or black embroidery thread for the squirrel.
  • Two 4 mm safety eyes or black embroidery thread for the bear.
  • Warm white battery fairy light strand, optional, placed behind the interior ceiling before final closing.

Gauge and Texture Notes

The cottage in the photo has a dense, visible crochet texture. Use a firm tension so the walls stand neatly and the tiny foods keep their shapes. With worsted yarn and a 3.5 mm hook, 16 sc and 18 rows should measure about 4 in / 10 cm. Exact gauge is less important than firmness.

For miniature foods and animals, use DK yarn and a 2.75 mm hook. Stuff each piece lightly but firmly. Tiny pastries should be shaped with stitch count first, then refined with a few hidden sewing stitches so they look plump but not oversized.

Construction Overview

  1. Make the large round green base.
  2. Make the bakery cottage body as a half-round hut with tan walls and a large front opening.
  3. Make the mossy roof cap with scalloped edges, lumpy moss patches, mushrooms, flowers, and vines.
  4. Make two bark-textured doors and sew them open at an angle.
  5. Make the interior floor, back wall, shelves, counter, bread, and baker bear.
  6. Make the squirrel, bread wagon, outdoor table, cake, basket, rocks, plants, and mushrooms.
  7. Assemble all pieces to match the scene, keeping the doorway centered and the outside details layered around the shop.

Large Round Woodland Base

Use moss green worsted yarn and the 3.5 mm hook. Work in joined rounds if you want a flatter circle, or continuous rounds if your tension is even. The base should be thick and soft, like a grassy rug under the entire bakery scene.

  5. Rnd 31: Working through the front top piece and a second plain green circle if desired, sc around to close. For a simpler base, sl st around and weave in ends.

To create the slightly uneven grassy look in the image, attach dark green and olive green scraps to random surface stitches. Use short chains of 4 to 8, sl st back along the chain, then fasten down the end. Place more tufts near the cottage walls, rocks, and mushrooms.

Bakery Cottage Body

The shop is a rounded woodland hut with tan-brown crochet walls and a wide front opening. The body is worked as a curved back and side wall panel, then supported with plastic canvas. The front is left open so the bakery counter and bear can be seen clearly.

Main Wall Panel

Use warm taupe or mushroom-brown worsted yarn and the 3.5 mm hook. Work in rows. Ch 53.

  1. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. 52 sts.
  2. Rows 2-6: Ch 1, turn, sc across. 52 sts.
  3. Row 7: Ch 1, turn, sc 4, hdc 44, sc 4. 52 sts.
  4. Rows 8-10: Ch 1, turn, sc across. 52 sts.
  5. Row 11: Ch 1, turn, sc 6, hdc 40, sc 6. 52 sts.
  6. Rows 12-16: Ch 1, turn, sc across. 52 sts.
  7. Row 17: Ch 1, turn, sc 8, hdc 36, sc 8. 52 sts.
  8. Rows 18-26: Ch 1, turn, sc across. 52 sts.
  9. Rows 27-34: Ch 1, turn, sc across, changing randomly between taupe and slightly darker brown every few rows for bark-like wall shading. 52 sts.
  10. Rows 35-38: Ch 1, turn, sc across. 52 sts.
  11. Fasten off, leaving a long sewing tail.

Cut plastic canvas to match the panel. Curve the panel into a half-cylinder with the center forming the back wall and the ends forming the front side edges. The finished curved wall should be about 11 in / 28 cm wide across the front and 7 in / 18 cm deep.

Front Opening Frame

The doorway is a large rounded rectangle. Make the frame separately so it can be sewn over the front edges and create the clean glowing shop entrance seen in the image.

  1. With warm beige yarn, ch 22.
  2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. 21 sts.
  3. Rows 2-3: Ch 1, turn, sc across. 21 sts. This is the top lintel.
  4. Fasten off.
  5. Left side: Join yarn to one end of the lintel. Ch 20. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across chain, then sl st into lintel corner. Fasten off.
  6. Right side: Repeat on the other end.
  7. Work 1 round of sc evenly around the entire U-shaped frame, placing 3 sc in the two top corners. Fasten off.

Sew the frame to the front of the cottage body. The side legs should sit straight down, and the top should be centered beneath the roof. Add a second round of dark brown surface slip stitches around the outer edge for the shadow line.

  4. Rows 24-25: Ch 1, turn, sc across. 35 sts.
  5. Fasten off and sew this panel inside the cottage against the back curve. Slightly gather the side edges so it follows the rounded wall.

Interior Floor

Use tan yarn. Ch 34.

  1. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. 33 sts.
  2. Rows 2-20: Ch 1, turn, sc across. 33 sts.

  4. Row 22: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc 27, sc2tog. 29 sts.
  5. Fasten off.

Sew or glue the floor inside the doorway. The straight edge sits at the front opening, and the tapered edge curves toward the back wall. Add a few tan surface stitches across the floor to suggest planks or rows of crochet texture.

Mossy Roof Cap

The roof is the most important shape in the scene. It is rounded, thick, green, and slightly overhanging, with uneven moss edges and raised patches. Use olive green worsted yarn and the 3.5 mm hook. Work in rows to make a broad oval cap.

Place the roof over the curved cottage body. It should overhang the front, sides, and back by about 0.5 in / 1.25 cm. Add a layer of stuffing between the roof and a matching oval piece of felt or plastic canvas, then sew around the lower edge.

Irregular Moss Edge

Use dark green, yellow green, and fuzzy green yarn scraps. Join anywhere along the lower roof edge.

With dark brown embroidery thread or split yarn, stitch Woodland Bakery across the sign. Use small straight stitches, keeping the words centered. Sew the sign above the doorway, slightly tucked under the front roof edge.

Open Bark Doors

The doors are tall, narrow, brown, and ribbed like tree bark. Make two. Use bark brown worsted yarn and the 3.5 mm hook.

  1. Ch 12.
  2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. 11 sts.
  3. Row 2: Ch 1, turn, BLO sc across. 11 sts.

  5. Place the interior counter in the center, the bear behind it, the right shelf on the right wall, and the mint display on the left.

  10. For faces, embroider small dark noses, simple mouths, and gentle eyebrows if desired. Keep expressions soft and friendly.

Care Notes

Keep the miniature bakery dry and away from direct sunlight. Because the scene includes small foods, flowers, mushrooms, and possible wire supports, it is best used as decoration rather than a toy for young children. Dust gently with a soft brush.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The roof overhang is even and the front moss edge is visible.
  • The doorway stays open and the two bark doors angle outward.
  • The sign is centered above the entrance.
  • The bear can be seen clearly behind the counter.
  • The right shelf has several rows of bread.
  • The squirrel, wagon, table, cake, mushrooms, rocks, flowers, and plants are all attached securely.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Spot clean only with a barely damp cloth and mild soap. Do not soak the cottage, because the inner supports may bend. Let the piece air dry completely before storing. Store in a box with tissue around the mushrooms, doors, squirrel tail, and table so the shapes remain upright.

To refresh flattened moss, gently lift the chain loops with a yarn needle. If a small bread or flower loosens over time, sew it back with matching thread instead of pulling tightly through the whole base. This keeps the miniature scene neat, soft, and display-ready.
