Crochet Tutorial: Owl’s Wise Words and Tea Treehouse – Free Crochet Pattern

This crochet pattern creates a whimsical tree-stump library and tea house with a leafy green roof, balcony railing, ladder, curved stairs, tiny books, an owl reading in a chair, and a squirrel serving tea. The finished piece is a detailed decorative amigurumi scene inspired by a cozy woodland bookshop built inside a tree.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Treehouse height: about 9.5 in / 24 cm, including leafy roof.
  • Base diameter: about 8 in / 20 cm.
  • Upper balcony diameter: about 6.25 in / 16 cm.
  • Owl height: about 2.25 in / 5.5 cm.
  • Squirrel height: about 2.5 in / 6.5 cm.

This pattern is written in US crochet terms. Most pieces are worked with tight amigurumi tension. Use a smaller hook than your yarn label recommends so the stuffing and structure do not show through.

Skill Level

Intermediate to advanced beginner. The main stitches are simple, but the project includes shaping, small parts, surface details, embroidery, wire-free structure, and careful assembly. Beginners can complete it by working slowly and using stitch markers.

Materials

  • Sport or DK weight cotton yarn in bark brown, dark brown, tan, moss green, light green, cream, white, gold, rust orange, gray, red, blue, yellow, purple, and small amounts of black.
  • 2.25 mm crochet hook for figures and small details.
  • 2.75 mm crochet hook for treehouse walls, roof, balcony, and base.
  • Polyester fiberfill.
  • Plastic canvas, thin cardboard, or foam sheet for hidden support circles.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Small scissors.
  • Optional: craft glue for securing books, sign, and hidden structural parts.
  • Optional: two 6 mm safety eyes for the squirrel and two 8 mm safety eyes for the owl, or embroider all eyes with black yarn.

Gauge

  • With 2.75 mm hook: 6 sc and 7 rnds = 1 in / 2.5 cm.
  • With 2.25 mm hook: 7 sc and 8 rnds = 1 in / 2.5 cm.

Gauge is not critical, but tight stitches are important. If your treehouse feels floppy, go down one hook size or add a second hidden support layer inside the trunk and balcony.

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • tr = treble crochet
  • inc = 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec = single crochet 2 stitches together
  • BLO = back loop only
  • FLO = front loop only
  • MR = magic ring
  • rnd = round
  • st = stitch
  • FO = fasten off

Important Notes Before You Start

The treehouse is built in separate pieces: a round grassy base, a wide tree-stump body, an upper reading room, a balcony deck, a leafy roof, branches, stairs, ladder, furniture, books, and two woodland characters. The pieces are sewn together after shaping.

Use invisible decreases for all amigurumi parts. When the pattern says to stuff firmly, add stuffing in small amounts so the shape stays smooth. For flat pieces such as shelves, books, ladder rails, and the sign, block gently with your fingers before sewing.

The image shows a rustic handmade look. Slight unevenness in the bark texture, leaf scallops, book stacks, and rails makes the finished treehouse look more natural. Keep the main dimensions consistent, but do not worry if every tiny book is slightly different.

Color Guide

  • Bark brown: main trunk, branches, stair base, ladder sides.
  • Dark brown: bark grooves, shelves, chair, rail posts, sign frame.
  • Tan: balcony deck, stair treads, ladder rungs, chair seat, teacups.
  • Moss green: roof, grass base, leaves, vines.
  • Cream and white: owl face, eyes, tea cup highlights, squirrel apron.
  • Gold: owl beak and feet, lamp glow, small book pages.
  • Rust orange: squirrel body and tail.

  18. Rnd 18: sc 16, inc, repeat around. 108 sts.

Cut a plastic canvas circle slightly smaller than the base. Place it against the wrong side. Crochet one more round to create a neat edge.

  1. Rnd 19: BLO sc around. 108 sts.
  2. Rnd 20: sc around. 108 sts.
  3. Rnd 21: sl st around loosely. FO and weave in ends.

Grass Texture

Attach moss green or light green randomly across the base. Make small grass tufts by stitching ch 3, sl st in same spot. Add 25 to 35 tufts, especially near the tree roots and book pile.

Main Tree Stump Body

The trunk is a wide cylinder with a hollow upper room visible from the front. The lower part is thick and rounded, while the upper reading nook sits slightly inset under the leafy roof. Use bark brown and 2.75 mm hook.

Bottom of Trunk

  1. Rnd 1: MR, 8 sc in ring. 8 sts.
  2. Rnd 2: inc around. 16 sts.

  11. Rnd 11: BLO sc around. 80 sts.
  12. Rnd 12: sc around. 80 sts.

Insert a plastic canvas circle into the base of the trunk. This keeps the stump flat on the grassy mat. Continue working upward.

Lower Trunk Walls

  1. Rnd 13: sc around. 80 sts.
  2. Rnd 14: sc 18, inc, sc 20, inc, sc 20, inc, sc 19. 83 sts.

Stuff the lower trunk lightly around the edge only, leaving the center open enough to add structure. The photo shows a firm stump with a hollow visible room above, so do not overstuff the middle.

Forming the Front Opening

The large front opening begins above the balcony floor and shows the owl’s reading room. From this point, work in rows to leave a window-like opening at the front.

  1. Row 29: ch 1, turn, sc 58, leave remaining 17 sts unworked for front opening. 58 sts.
  2. Row 30: ch 1, turn, sc across. 58 sts.
  3. Row 31: ch 1, turn, sc 12, dec, sc 30, dec, sc 12. 56 sts.
  4. Row 32: ch 1, turn, sc across. 56 sts.
  5. Row 33: ch 1, turn, sc 11, dec, sc 30, dec, sc 11. 54 sts.
  6. Row 34: ch 1, turn, sc across. 54 sts.
  7. Row 35: ch 1, turn, sc 10, dec, sc 30, dec, sc 10. 52 sts.
  8. Row 36: ch 1, turn, sc across. 52 sts.
  9. Row 37: ch 1, turn, sc 9, dec, sc 30, dec, sc 9. 50 sts.
  10. Row 38: ch 1, turn, sc across. 50 sts.
  11. Row 39: ch 1, turn, sc across. FO, leaving a long tail.

The opening should measure about 3.5 in wide and 2.5 in tall. Fold the side edges slightly inward and sew them to the inner wall later to make the room look recessed.

Opening Border

Attach dark brown at the lower left corner of the opening. Work evenly around the front opening.

  1. Round Border: sc 15 up left side, sc 22 across top, sc 15 down right side, sc 18 across bottom. Join with sl st.
  2. Second Border: ch 1, sc around again. FO.

Bark Texture

The image shows vertical bark ridges, grooves, and a few root-like bulges. Use dark brown and tan surface crochet. Add these details before sewing the balcony in place.

  • Make 8 long dark brown surface sl st lines from lower trunk to balcony height.
  • Make 5 shorter tan surface sl st lines between the dark grooves.
  • Use uneven spacing so the trunk looks natural.
  • At the front, keep the center clear for the sign and book basket.

Raised Bark Strips

Make 7 separate strips in dark brown.

  1. Ch 18, starting in second ch from hook sc 17. FO.
  2. Ch 15, starting in second ch from hook sc 14. FO.

  6. Ch 16, starting in second ch from hook sc 15. FO.
  7. Ch 13, starting in second ch from hook sc 12. FO.

Sew the strips vertically onto the trunk, especially below the balcony and near the roots. Curve some strips slightly. This gives the stump the thick crocheted bark appearance seen in the picture.

Tree Roots

Make five roots in bark brown. They should spread outward over the green base like triangular supports at the bottom of the stump.

Large Front Root

  1. Rnd 1: MR, 5 sc. 5 sts.

  6. Rnd 6: sc around. 9 sts.
  7. Rnd 7: sc 3, inc, sc 3, inc, sc 1. 11 sts.
  8. Rnd 8: sc around. FO.

Small Roots, Make 2

  1. Rnd 1: MR, 4 sc. 4 sts.
  2. Rnd 2: sc around. 4 sts.
  3. Rnd 3: sc 1, inc, repeat twice. 6 sts.
  4. Rnd 4: sc around. 6 sts.
  5. Rnd 5: sc 2, inc, repeat twice. 8 sts.
  6. Rnd 6: sc around. FO.

Assembly Order

Assembly is the most important part of this project. Before sewing permanently, place every piece on the base and compare the silhouette to the image. The tree should look round, balanced, and slightly taller than it is wide.

  1. Sew the main trunk to the center of the grassy base.
  2. Sew roots around the lower trunk, spreading them naturally over the grass.
  3. Add bark strips, surface lines, and round window.
  4. Sew the balcony deck around the trunk at the lower edge of the room opening.
  5. Sew the interior wall panel inside the opening.
  6. Attach shelves, mini books, and hanging lamp to the interior panel.
  7. Sew the leafy roof to the top of the stump.
  8. Attach side branches under the roof and sew leaves to branch tips.
  9. Add balcony posts, bottom rail, and top rail around the front edge.
  10. Sew the curved staircase to the right side.
  11. Sew the ladder to the front, leaning up to the balcony.
  12. Attach sign to the front trunk.
  13. Sew basket and book stacks to the grass base.
  14. Place and sew the chair inside the room, slightly left of center.
  15. Sew the owl into the chair and attach the open book to its wings.
  16. Sew the side table and teacup beside the owl.
  17. Sew the squirrel on the right side of the balcony.
  18. Secure the tray to the squirrel’s arms.

Positioning Guide

  • Owl: seated inside the opening, centered slightly left, facing forward.
  • Squirrel: standing on the balcony right side, facing the owl.
  • Bookshelf: fills the back wall behind the owl.
  • Roof: scalloped leaves hang over the front opening.
  • Ladder: straight and vertical on the front right side.
  • Staircase: curves around the outer right side.
  • Sign: centered on the lower front trunk below the balcony.
  • Book basket: placed on grass at the lower left front.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Use black yarn to refine the owl’s pupils, brow lines, and the squirrel’s nose. Add a tiny white highlight stitch to each eye if desired. Keep facial embroidery small so the figures maintain the soft handmade style shown in the image.

Check the owl’s book angle before securing it. The open book should sit just below the face, with both wings touching it. The squirrel’s tray should be level and placed between the squirrel and owl, creating a tea-serving scene.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean only with a cool damp cloth.
  • Do not machine wash because the structure, shelves, and small books may shift.
  • Keep away from heavy moisture and direct sunlight.
  • Reshape the roof scallops and balcony railing gently with your fingers after cleaning.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Tree trunk stands flat and centered on the grass base.
  • Balcony is level and firmly attached.
  • Railing posts are evenly spaced with an opening near the stairs.
  • Owl is seated securely in the chair.
  • Squirrel stands upright and holds the tray.
  • Books, basket, sign, ladder, window, and branches are all attached.
  • No loose yarn tails remain visible.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For dust, use a soft dry brush and work gently around the bookshelves, railing, and figures. If a spot needs cleaning, dab the area with a lightly damp cloth and allow it to air dry completely before storing.

Store the treehouse upright in a box with tissue paper around the balcony and roof. Do not press heavy items against the railing, ladder, stairs, or branches. These small details keep the finished piece close to the cozy treehouse scene in the photo.
