This cheerful knitted bird doll has a large round yellow head, sweet embroidered eyes, tiny orange beak, denim-style overalls, striped red-and-white shirt, blue polka dot headband, sandals, a small beige satchel, a yarn basket, and a tiny teacup. The finished toy is designed as a soft decorative knit with playful handmade details and a cozy amigurumi-style shape.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Overview
This pattern is worked mostly in the round using small needles, firm tension, and light stuffing. The doll has an oversized head, a compact body, short arms, slim legs, and rounded feet. The denim overalls are knitted separately and fitted over the body for the layered look shown in the photo.
The head is the largest part of the design. It is shaped as a tall oval with full cheeks and a slightly narrowed lower edge where it meets the neck. The face is built with duplicate stitch, embroidery, and small knitted pieces so the expression stays soft and child-friendly.
The finished sample measures about 12 inches tall from the bottom of the sandals to the top of the headband bow. The head is about 5 inches wide, the body with overalls about 4 inches tall, and each foot about 1.5 inches long.
Skill Level
- Level: Confident beginner to intermediate.
- Techniques used: Knit, purl, increase, decrease, knitting in the round, simple color changes, mattress stitch, duplicate stitch, embroidery, picking up stitches, and basic shaping.
- Construction: Separate knitted pieces are stuffed, shaped, and sewn together.
Materials
- DK weight yarn in bright yellow for head, arms, and legs.
- DK weight yarn in orange for beak, lower legs, and toes.
- DK weight yarn in denim blue for overalls, headband, bow, sandal buttons, and eye shading.
- DK weight yarn in white for shirt stripes, eye whites, daisies, and highlights.
- DK weight yarn in red for shirt stripes and small flower detail.
- DK weight yarn in beige or light tan for satchel and sandal soles.
- DK weight yarn in brown for sandal straps, basket, and satchel strap.
- Small amounts of green, light blue, pink, yellow, and red for embroidered patches, flowers, yarn balls, and mushroom detail.
- Black embroidery yarn or black DK yarn split into thinner strands for eyelashes, pupils, brows, and head feathers.
- US size 2 needles, 2.75 mm, double-pointed needles or circular needles for magic loop.
- US size 1 needles, 2.25 mm, for small details if you want tighter pieces.
- Polyester fiberfill stuffing.
- Tapestry needle.
- Six small flat buttons, about 6 mm: two for overall straps, one for satchel flap, and optional decorative extras.
- Stitch markers.
- Scrap yarn for holding stitches.
Gauge
Work at a tight toy-making gauge so the stuffing does not show. In stockinette stitch, aim for 7 stitches and 10 rounds per inch using DK yarn and US size 2 needles. If your stitches are loose, go down one needle size.
Gauge is important for a firm doll. The head must hold its rounded shape, the beak must sit forward, and the overalls must fit snugly over the striped shirt. A slightly tighter gauge gives the clean knitted texture seen in the image.

Important Notes Before Starting
- Work the head, body, arms, legs, and feet in the round unless a section says to work flat.
- Stuff gradually while knitting. Do not overstuff the cheeks too early; shape them after the face is embroidered.
- Use mattress stitch for side seams and invisible stitching for attaching pieces.
- Leave long yarn tails on most pieces for sewing.
- The toy is intended as a decorative handmade item, not for children under 3 because of buttons and small sewn details.
Main Doll Head
The head is bright yellow, oversized, and oval. It is wider through the cheeks and slightly narrower at the neck. The front should be smooth because the eyes, beak, lashes, and brows are embroidered after stuffing.

Joining the Doll
Before sewing, lay all parts on a flat surface. The head should be much larger than the body, the legs should sit close together, and the feet should point slightly outward. This creates the same cute standing pose as the photo.
- Pull the striped shirt over the stuffed body. Center the stripes at the front.
- Sew the shirt lightly at the back if it feels loose.
- Slide the denim overalls over the body and adjust the bib to the front.
- Sew the overalls to the body at the back waist with a few hidden stitches.
- Attach the legs under the overall cuffs, spacing them about 0.5 inch apart.
- Sew one foot to each leg, pointing the toes forward and slightly outward.
- Place sleeves at the upper sides of the shirt.
- Insert yellow arms into the sleeves and sew through sleeve and arm at the shoulder.
- Attach the head to the body with strong yellow yarn. Sew around the neck twice for stability.
- Check that the head is centered and upright before knotting securely.
Facial Placement Guide
- Place the eyes on the front of the head between Rnds 25 and 39.
- Leave about 7 sts between the inner eye edges.
- Place the beak center about 4 rounds below the lower eye line.
- Place brows about 5 to 6 rounds above the eyes.
- Place the headband edge behind the brows, not across the face.
- Attach the bow at the top center, slightly forward of the crown.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Sew the headband in place after the face is finished so you can adjust the expression. Add the bow over the top center seam, then sew the two black feathers behind it. Check that the bow loops sit wide and flat like the picture.
Add eyelashes last using black yarn. Keep the stitches smooth and symmetrical. A tiny white highlight in each eye makes the face look lively. Use yellow yarn to gently shape the cheeks again if needed.
- Sew the satchel strap to the right hand so the bag hangs beside the body.
- Place the yarn basket on the left side of the display.
- Place the teacup on the right side of the display.
- Trim loose yarn ends carefully and hide all knots inside the doll.
Care Notes
Spot clean the doll with a cool damp cloth. Avoid soaking because the stuffing, embroidery, buttons, and shaped details may shift. Let the toy air dry flat on a towel away from direct sunlight.
- Do not machine wash.
- Do not tumble dry.
- Keep away from pets that may chew small parts.
- Store upright or flat so the bow and facial details stay neat.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The head is larger than the body and softly oval.
- The cheeks are rounded but not tightly pinched.
- The eyes are tall ovals with blue centers, black pupils, and white highlights.
- The eyelashes curve outward and upward.
- The orange beak is centered and slightly puckered.
- The striped shirt shows at the chest and sleeves.
- The denim overalls have a front bib, straps, buttons, cuffs, pocket, patches, and flowers.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
For long-term display, keep the knitted doll in a dry place with gentle airflow. If dust collects, use a soft brush and move in the direction of the stitches. Avoid harsh rubbing on the eyes, eyelashes, beak, embroidered flowers, and small patches.
If the overalls or accessories become flattened, reshape them gently with your fingers. Do not use high heat or steam directly on the toy. Store the basket, teacup, and satchel beside the doll in a small box when not displayed.
Check buttons and sewn accessories from time to time. Reinforce any loose thread immediately with matching yarn. With careful handling, this knitted bird doll will keep its bright colors, rounded shape, and handmade charm for many seasons.
