Gaillardia Firework-Field Bunny – Knitting

Gaillardia Firework-Field Bunny – Knitting

This knitted bunny set is designed to look like a warm autumn fair display, with a soft rabbit doll, a textured beret, a flowered cardigan, a patterned skirt, pink shoes, and tiny festival accessories. It has the charm of a handmade bunny doll, heirloom rabbit, collectible stuffed animal, nursery decor gift, and seasonal display piece all in one. The finished set feels like a boutique knitted toy you might search for when shopping for artisan rabbit dolls, fall fair decor, or a special handmade gift for a child’s room.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Project Overview

This pattern creates the full scene shown in the image: the main bunny, the beret, the mustard inner top, the rust cardigan with raised bobbles and knitted flower motifs, the cream-and-rust skirt, the pink strap shoes, the drawstring bag, the pinwheel, the tiny fair ticket, the flower bouquet, and the little bird companion wearing its own cap and cardigan.

The shapes are rounded and gentle rather than sharply sculpted. The bunny has a large oval head, a compact pear-shaped body, slim arms, sturdy legs, long hanging ears, and a calm embroidered face. The clothing is the key to the look, so the instructions below focus on clean shaping, neat finishing, and visible color placement.

The knitting is small-scale and detailed. Use fine yarn and knit tightly so the stuffed pieces hold their shape. If your knitting is loose, go down a needle size. A firm fabric will help the head stay smooth, the flowers hold their raised texture, and the tiny accessories stay crisp.

Skill Level

  • Level: Intermediate
  • Main techniques: knit, purl, knit in the round, short rows if preferred, simple stranded colorwork, bobbles, i-cord, mattress stitch, duplicate stitch, embroidery, and basic finishing
  • Best for: knitters comfortable working tiny pieces and sewing them neatly

Materials

  • Main bunny color: light cream or oatmeal fingering-weight yarn
  • Beret color: pale beige fingering-weight yarn
  • Inner top color: mustard golden yellow fingering-weight yarn
  • Cardigan colors: deep rust, warm orange, mustard, olive green, and dark brown
  • Skirt colors: cream, rust, orange, and mustard
  • Shoes: dusty pink plus tiny mustard for flower centers if desired
  • Bag: cream with rust, blue, orange, and yellow for embroidery
  • Bird: brown, cream, rust, mustard, and a touch of orange
  • Bouquet: rust, mustard, brown, green, and cream string or yarn tie
  • Needles: set of double-pointed needles or magic loop in US 1.5 to US 2.5 sizes, depending on your yarn and tension
  • Notions: toy stuffing, tapestry needle, stitch markers, small buttons for cardigan, black embroidery thread, pink or cream sewing thread, thin cardboard for the ticket, optional pipe cleaner for pinwheel stem support

Gauge

Gauge is not critical as long as the fabric is firm. Aim for a dense knitted surface with no stuffing showing through. For the main doll, a useful target is about 8 to 9 stitches per inch in stockinette using fingering-weight yarn and small needles.

If your bunny is growing taller than expected, reduce needle size before continuing with the clothing. The cardigan and skirt are proportioned to a bunny around 10 to 11 inches tall from feet to top of head, not including the beret puff.

Finished Size

  • Main bunny: about 10.5 inches tall standing
  • Beret width: about 4.25 inches across when flat
  • Bird companion: about 2.25 inches tall
  • Bag: about 2 inches tall
  • Bouquet: about 2.5 inches long
  • Pinwheel: about 2.5 inches long including handle

General Notes

  • Work the bunny pieces firmly and stuff as you go.
  • The legs and body are made first, then joined.
  • The head is made separately and sewn to the body.
  • The ears are knitted flat for a soft drape, then folded and sewn on low under the beret edge.
  • The cardigan sits short at the waist and has full sleeves with scattered bobbles.
  • The skirt is shaped with gentle flare and a colorwork band near the hem.
  • The facial expression is simple: two tiny vertical eyes and a stitched nose-mouth detail.

Main Bunny

Legs Make 2

Using cream, CO 12 sts and divide for working in the round. Join carefully. Work 5 rnds in k1, p1 rib for the lower leg. Change to stockinette and knit 10 rnds. Increase evenly to 14 sts over the next rnd.

Knit 8 rnds more. On the next rnd, work k1, m1, knit to last stitch, m1, k1. You now have 16 sts. Knit 6 rnds. Stuff the foot and lower leg lightly. Keep the upper leg only lightly filled so the body can sit naturally above it.

For the shaped upper foot, flatten the piece so the start of round sits at the inner leg. Work 1 rnd even. Then decrease on the front half only over 2 rnds by working one k2tog on each side of the toe area. Return to 14 sts total. Knit 3 rnds even.

Repeat for the second leg, but do not cut yarn on the second one.

Join Legs and Knit Body

Place both legs side by side, toes facing forward. Knit across one leg, CO 4 sts, knit across second leg, CO 4 sts to join. You now have 36 sts in the round. Mark the side joins. These form the lower body.

Knit 6 rnds even. On the next rnd, increase 4 sts evenly to 40 sts. Knit 8 rnds. Begin shaping the tummy by adding 4 sts evenly over the next 2 rnds to reach 44 sts. Knit 6 rnds. Stuff the legs firmly and the lower body moderately.

Continue the torso with 8 more rnds in stockinette. Decrease 4 sts evenly to 40 sts. Knit 4 rnds. Decrease 4 sts evenly to 36 sts. Knit 4 rnds. Decrease 4 sts evenly to 32 sts. This narrower section forms the upper chest and lets the cardigan sit naturally.

Knit 3 rnds. BO loosely or leave a long tail for sewing, depending on your preferred method. Stuff the upper body firmly but keep the top edge flexible enough to shape the shoulders slightly inward.

Arms Make 2

Using cream, CO 10 sts and join for working in the round. Knit 16 rnds in stockinette. Increase 2 sts evenly to 12 sts. Knit 8 more rnds. The arm should be slim and softly tapered, ending just below the cardigan sleeve line.

Stuff only the lower two-thirds of each arm. Flatten the open edge and sew closed. The top should remain soft and flat for easier attachment. The finished arm is straight, not bent, and hangs gently downward at a slight outward angle.

Head

Using cream, CO 12 sts and divide evenly. Join in the round. Knit 1 rnd. Increase evenly to 24 sts. Knit 1 rnd. Increase evenly to 36 sts. Knit 1 rnd. Increase evenly to 48 sts. Knit 6 rnds. Increase evenly to 54 sts.

Knit 14 rnds even. This creates the broad face and crown seen in the image. The head is not spherical. It is slightly taller than wide, with a softly flattened face and a rounded back. Add extra stuffing at the lower face and cheeks for a calm full look.

Begin decreasing. Decrease 6 sts evenly every other rnd until 24 sts remain. Stuff very firmly before the opening gets too small. Shape the front with your fingers so the face stays smooth and the muzzle area remains only slightly projected, not sharply stuffed.

Thread yarn through the remaining stitches and pull closed. Fasten securely. Place the closure at the top back so it will sit under the beret.

Ears Make 2

Using cream, CO 8 sts flat. Work in stockinette with the first and last stitch knit on every row for tidy edges. Increase 1 stitch at each end every 4th row 5 times. You now have 18 sts.

Work even until the ear measures about 4.5 inches. Begin tapering by decreasing 1 stitch at each end every 4th row until 10 sts remain, then every other row until 4 sts remain. Knit 1 row, then k2tog twice and fasten off.

Do not stuff the ears. Steam lightly if needed so they lie flat. Fold the base edge inward by about 0.25 inch and sew in place to create the soft hanging ear line. The ears should begin just below the side line of the beret and fall straight down to shoulder level.

Facial Embroidery

Place the eyes about 8 rows above the neck line and 8 stitches apart. Use black embroidery thread and make one tiny vertical satin stitch or one straight stitch for each eye. Keep them very small. Large eyes will change the gentle expression.

For the nose, stitch a small upside-down triangle or short Y-shape in dark brown or black. From the center point, stitch a short line downward, then split into two tiny angled mouth lines. The mouth is delicate, slightly serious, and centered low on the face.

Beret

The beret is soft, puffy, and slightly oversized. It sits low over the forehead and covers the ear joins. Use pale beige yarn. CO 72 sts and join in the round. Work 4 rnds in k1, p1 rib. This becomes the lower edge band that frames the face.

Increase every 6th stitch around to 84 sts. Work a lace-texture repeat for 10 rnds as follows: rnd 1 knit, rnd 2 k2tog, yo around in a balanced repeat, rnd 3 knit, rnd 4 purl, rnd 5 knit. Keep the texture subtle. The hat should look airy but still hold shape.

After the textured section, knit 4 rnds even. Begin crown decreases by reducing 12 sts every other rnd in evenly spaced sections until 12 sts remain. Thread yarn through all remaining sts and pull closed. Add a tiny center nub if desired, but keep it soft and low.

Lightly steam the beret and place it on the bunny before final tacking. Tilt it only slightly backward. In the image, it sits centered and soft, not sharply slouched to one side.

Mustard Inner Top

This piece shows at the neckline and under the cardigan. It can be worked as a simple sleeveless shell. Using mustard yarn, CO 32 sts and work flat. Knit 2 rows. Continue in stockinette for 12 rows.

Shape armholes by binding off 2 sts at each side once. Work 4 rows even. Shape a modest neck by binding off the center 8 sts, then working each side separately, decreasing 1 stitch at the neck edge on the next 2 RS rows. Make a matching back piece.

Sew shoulders and side seams, leaving the lower edge open enough to tuck neatly into the waistband area. The neckline should sit high, like a close sweater shell under the cardigan.

Cardigan

The cardigan is the most detailed garment in the set. It is short, warm-toned, and closes at the front with three small buttons. The body begins in deep rust, shifts into orange and mustard near the yoke, and includes raised flower motifs on both fronts plus scattered sleeve bobbles.

Back

Using rust, CO 34 sts. Work 5 rows in k1, p1 rib. Change to stockinette and work 10 rows. Begin soft color shading if desired by blending a little orange into the upper body. Shape armholes by binding off 2 sts at each side once. Work even for 10 more rows.

Shape shoulders by binding off 5 sts at the start of the next 2 rows, then 5 sts again on the following 2 rows. Place remaining center stitches on hold or bind off for the back neck. The back is plain except for subtle warm striping created by your yarn changes.

Left Front

Using rust, CO 18 sts. Work 5 rows ribbing. Continue in stockinette, keeping the front edge in 3 stitches of rib or seed stitch for a stable button band look. At the same time, place one flower motif centered on the lower front.

For the flower base, duplicate stitch a dark brown center circle after knitting. Around it, sew or knit small bobble petals in mustard and orange. Add two small olive leaves beneath. Place the flower about 8 rows above the hem and 5 stitches in from the side seam.

Shape armhole to match the back. Shape the V-neck by decreasing 1 stitch at the neck edge every 4th row until the shoulder width matches the back. Bind off shoulder to match.

Right Front

Work as for the left front, reversing shaping and flower placement. Add three buttonholes along the band by working yarn over, k2tog on evenly spaced RS rows. Match them to three tiny warm-toned buttons.

Sleeves Make 2

Using rust, CO 18 sts. Work 4 rows of ribbing. Knit in stockinette, increasing 1 stitch at each side every 6th row until 26 sts. Work until sleeve reaches just above the wrist. The sleeve is full but not puffed at the cap.

Make scattered bobbles across the lower and middle sleeve area. Place 5 to 7 small bobbles per sleeve, spaced irregularly but balanced. The image shows these like tiny berries or seed nubs. Keep them small and neat so they do not overpower the flower fronts.

Cap shaping is gentle. Bind off 2 sts at each side once, then decrease 1 stitch each side every other row until 10 sts remain. Bind off. Sew sleeves into armholes.

Cardigan Finishing

Sew shoulder seams first, then side seams, then sleeves. Add the three buttons. Embroider the flower centers in dark brown and add extra petal definition with duplicate stitch if needed. The cardigan should end right at the waist, leaving the skirt waistband visible below.

Skirt

The skirt is cream at the top with a wide rust band and warm starburst motifs near the hem. It has a soft A-line shape and should stand out slightly from the body without becoming stiff. Work from the waist downward.

Using cream, CO 72 sts and join in the round. Work 4 rnds in k1, p1 rib. Knit 6 rnds stockinette. Increase 8 sts evenly to 80 sts. Knit 4 rnds. Work a small dotted transition round by placing tiny rust marks every 8 to 10 stitches if desired.

Switch to rust and begin the decorative lower band. Work 10 rnds in stockinette, placing simple starburst motifs in mustard and orange using stranded knitting or duplicate stitch. Each motif can be formed with a central point and 6 radiating stitched arms.

Space the starbursts evenly around the skirt. In the image, they read as fairground fireworks or stylized flowers. Place 6 to 8 motifs around the circumference. Keep the floats loose if using stranded knitting, or embroider afterward for cleaner small-scale control.

After the motif band, work 2 rnds rust, 2 rnds cream, 1 rnd purl as a turning line if you want a crisp hem, then 3 rnds knit. Bind off loosely. Steam lightly so the skirt flares but still hangs softly.

Shoes Make 2

The shoes are dusty pink Mary Jane style with a small strap and tiny scalloped trim. They can be knitted as slip-on coverings sewn around the foot or as decorative stitched shoes over the knitted leg base. This pattern uses a sewn covering for a neat finish.

Using pink, CO 14 sts. Work a flat sole strip for 8 rows in garter stitch. Pick up stitches around the strip and knit upward in the round for 6 rnds. Begin toe shaping with evenly spaced decreases over 3 rnds until the front cups the foot.

For the strap, pick up 4 stitches on one side, work 8 rows in garter, and sew across the top. Add a tiny mustard knot or sewn nub at the side where the strap meets the shoe. Embroider a soft scalloped line at the toe if desired to echo the image.

Drawstring Bag

Using cream, CO 20 sts and join in the round. Work 10 rnds in stockinette. Make a drawstring eyelet rnd by working k2tog, yo around at even spacing. Work 6 more rnds. Decrease gradually toward the base over the last 4 rnds, then close tightly.

Turn the piece so the neat side faces out with the gathered end at the bottom. Thread a rust i-cord or twisted cord through the eyelets and tie in a loose bow. Embroider tiny firework bursts on the front in blue, orange, and yellow using straight stitches from a central point.

Pinwheel

For the handle, make a slim i-cord in cream or pale wood tone, about 2 inches long. For the pinwheel blades, knit 4 tiny diamond-shaped pieces in rust and mustard, 2 of each color. Each blade begins with 1 stitch, increases to 5 stitches, then decreases back to 1.

Sew the 4 blades together at the center in a pinwheel arrangement, slightly overlapping. Add a tiny green knot or wrapped center. Sew the finished wheel to the top of the handle. It should look handmade and soft, not rigid like plastic.

Fair Ticket

Cut a small rectangle from thin cardboard or stiff felt-colored paper in pale tan. Round the corners slightly. Write or embroider FAIR TICKET in tiny dark letters. Add two little notch cuts on the sides if you want a classic ticket shape.

If you prefer a fully knitted version, work a tiny swatch in beige, bind off, back it with thin felt, and embroider the words in dark brown. Keep it very small so it matches the scale of the image.

Flower Bouquet

The bouquet includes three warm flowers tied together with pale string. Make 3 flowers, each with a dark brown center, mustard outer petals, and rust shading. You may knit them flat as layered flower shapes or make them with tiny bobble petals around a center.

For each flower center, CO 6 sts in brown and work a tiny round or knot. For petals, CO 12 sts in mustard, divide conceptually into 6 petals, and use short rows or separate knitted petals sewn around the center. Add a rust duplicate-stitched inner ring for depth.

Make 3 narrow green stems as i-cords. Add two small leaves total in olive green. Gather the stems and tie with cream yarn. Angle the bouquet so the flower faces sit forward and slightly upward, just like a small market bunch.

Bird Companion

The bird is squat, round, and tiny. It has a brown body, cream belly, mustard beak, rust cardigan, and a small rust cap. It should read as a cheerful side character without taking attention away from the bunny.

Body

Using brown, CO 6 sts and join in the round. Increase evenly to 24 sts over several rnds. Knit 8 rnds even. On the front center, switch 6 stitches to cream for the belly panel. Stuff lightly as you work. Decrease gradually to close the top.

Before closing, sew a tiny mustard beak between the brown face and cream belly. Add two tiny black stitched eyes. The body should be plump and slightly pear-shaped, with a flat base so it can sit on the table.

Wings

Make 2 tiny wings in brown. CO 6 sts flat, knit 2 rows, then decrease at each end every other row until 2 sts remain. Sew one wing to each side at a slight backward angle.

Bird Cardigan

Using rust, CO 14 sts flat. Work 2 rows ribbing, then 6 rows stockinette with a mustard stripe or panel at the upper chest. Wrap around the bird and sew in place at the front, leaving a small V opening. Add one tiny decorative button if desired.

Bird Cap

Using rust, CO 20 sts in the round. Work 2 rnds ribbing, 3 rnds knit, then decrease evenly to shape a small flat cap. Pull closed. Sew to the head at a slight tilt. It should look like a miniature beret cap rather than a pointed hat.

Assembly

  1. Sew the head firmly to the body, making sure the face looks straight and slightly forward.
  2. Attach the ears low on the head so they fall from under the beret edge.
  3. Sew the arms to the upper body just below the neck line.
  4. Dress the bunny in the mustard inner top, cardigan, skirt, and shoes.
  5. Place the beret on the head and tack it down at the sides and back.
  6. Arrange the accessories beside the bunny rather than sewing them permanently unless the toy is for display only.

Styling Notes for an Accurate Look

  • The face must stay simple and calm.
  • The ears should hang straight down, not stick out sideways.
  • The cardigan should be cropped and slightly snug.
  • The sleeve bobbles should be visible but sparse.
  • The skirt flare should be soft, with the decorative band near the bottom.
  • The shoes should look rounded and sweet, with a strap across the front.
  • The overall palette should stay in cream, mustard, rust, orange, olive, and dusty pink.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the face before knotting off the embroidery permanently. Small changes in eye placement affect the expression more than any other detail. Keep the eyes tiny, the nose centered, and the mouth short. Tug the stuffing gently from the back if you need to smooth the cheeks.

Once the clothing is in place, tack the cardigan front lightly so it stays centered over the inner top. Arrange the skirt evenly around the waist. Set the beret low enough to frame the forehead while still showing the full face.

Care Notes

  • Display pieces are best kept away from direct sunlight.
  • If the set will be handled often, sew the accessories in place securely or store them separately.
  • Spot clean whenever possible.
  • Avoid soaking pieces with cardboard parts such as the ticket.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Are both ears even and hanging at the same height?
  • Does the head sit straight on the body?
  • Are the cardigan flowers balanced left and right?
  • Do the skirt motifs sit evenly around the hem?
  • Are the shoes aligned so the bunny stands neatly?
  • Are the bird and accessories scaled small enough beside the bunny?

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Use a soft dry brush to remove dust from the knitted texture, especially around the cardigan flowers, sleeve bobbles, and beret lace. For marks, dab gently with a barely damp cloth and mild soap, then blot with a towel. Do not rub the facial embroidery.

Dry flat and reshape while damp. Keep the bouquet, ticket, and pinwheel away from moisture if they include non-yarn parts. For long-term storage, wrap the set in clean tissue and place it in a breathable box rather than plastic so the fibers stay fresh and the colors remain rich.
