Gauge

Gauge is not critical as long as the fabric is firm enough to hold stuffing cleanly. You should not see large holes between stitches. For the large bunny, aim for a smooth, dense stockinette fabric that keeps the rounded face and long body shape seen in the image.

  • Approximate gauge in stockinette on 3 mm needles: 28 stitches and 36 rows = 4 inches
  • Approximate gauge in stranded colorwork on 3 mm needles: 30 stitches and 34 rows = 4 inches

Construction Overview

The large bunny is worked mostly in separate pieces. The legs and body are knitted in the round from the feet upward, then joined. The arms are worked separately and sewn in place. The head is worked as a shaped sphere with a gentle lower-face taper. Long floppy ears are knitted flat and seamed lightly at the base to create the soft fold visible in the image.

The dress is a separate garment with a fitted upper bodice, a textured center front panel, and a full skirt finished with a floral stranded border and a softly waved hem. The cardigan is worked flat in pieces and sewn neatly so it hangs open at the front. The bonnet is shaped to hug the head and finished with a wide tied top bow.

The mini bear follows the same visual language as the bunny, using the same cardigan, dress motif, and bonnet style in miniature. The accessories are all small but important, and each one helps the scene match the image exactly.

  7. Rnds 30-31: Knit.
  8. Lightly stuff only the lower half of the arms. Flatten the upper opening and sew closed.

The sleeves in the image are covered by the cardigan, so the arm shape should remain simple and slightly tapered. Do not make the hands too large. They appear modest and understated beside the cardigan cuffs.

  2. Rnd 1: Knit.
  3. Rnd 2: Kfb in each st. 24 sts.

  10. Rnds 9-26: Knit.
  11. Place safety eyes between Rnds 17 and 18, about 10 stitches apart. The face in the image is calm and centered, so keep the eyes small and slightly vertical in expression.

  13. Rnd 28: Knit.
  14. Rnd 29: K2, K2tog around. 36 sts.

For the gentle muzzle seen in the image, use a length of matching beige yarn to make a tiny horizontal indent beneath the eyes, drawing lightly through the face from side to side. This creates a subtle snout plane without adding a separate muzzle piece.

Large Bunny Ears

Make 2 flat pieces

  1. Using beige and 2.75 mm needles, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1 RS: Knit.
  3. Row 2: Purl.
  4. Row 3: K1, M1L, knit to last st, M1R, K1. 10 sts.
  5. Row 4: Purl.
  6. Rep Rows 3-4 until 18 sts.
  7. Work 16 rows in stockinette.
  8. Shape top: K1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1 on every RS row, purl WS rows, until 8 sts remain.
  9. Next RS row: K1, ssk, K2, K2tog, K1. 6 sts.
  10. WS: Purl.
  11. Next RS: K1, ssk, K2tog, K1. 4 sts.
  12. WS: Purl.
  13. Next RS: Ssk, K2tog. 2 sts.
  14. K2tog and fasten off.

Lightly steam the ears if needed. Fold the lower edge of each ear inward at the base and stitch so the ear curves gently downward. The photo shows floppy ears falling to each side beneath the bonnet, with soft inner folds rather than stiff upright ears.

Assemble the Large Bunny Base

  1. Sew the head securely to the body, keeping the neck short so the bunny has the compact storybook proportion seen in the image.
  2. Attach the arms just below the neckline, angled slightly downward.
  3. Sew the ears to the head a little behind the eye line, letting them fall down the sides.
  4. Check balance. The bunny should stand with support but also sit neatly when posed.

Dress for the Large Bunny

Bodice

The dress in the image has a pale blue body, a centered textured front panel, and a broad floral skirt border. It fits close through the upper body and then opens into a full skirt. Work the bodice flat to keep the front detailing centered and precise.

  1. Using pale blue and 3 mm needles, CO 36 sts.
  2. Rows 1-4: K1, P1 rib.
  3. Row 5 RS: K10, place marker, work 16-st center panel, place marker, K10.
  4. For the center panel, use this 16-st texture on RS rows: K2, P2, K2, P2, K2, P2, K2, P2. On WS rows, work sts as they appear.
  5. Every 4th row, shift the knit columns inward by 1 stitch to imitate the vertical braided leaf-like detail visible on the front of the dress.
  6. Continue until bodice measures about 2 inches.
  7. Shape armholes: BO 3 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. 30 sts.
  8. Work 6 rows even in pattern.
  9. Shape neckline: Next RS row, K10, BO 10, K10.
  10. Work each side separately for 4 rows, decreasing 1 stitch at neck edge every other row once.
  11. Work back and front to a total shoulder height of about 3 1/4 inches from cast-on edge.
  12. Join shoulders with a neat sewn seam or three-needle bind-off.

Skirt

  1. Pick up 54 sts evenly around lower bodice edge.
  2. Rnd 1: Knit.
  3. Rnd 2: K1, M1R around. 108 sts.
  4. Rnds 3-10: Knit.
  5. Rnds 11-28: Work floral border in stranded colorwork.

For the floral border, place tall periwinkle and violet flower spikes rising from green stems. Each flower should be about 6 to 8 stitches tall. Space them regularly around the skirt. Between flowers, add small green leaves and tiny blue accents. The image shows a meadow-like band, not a dense allover print, so leave pale blue background visible between motifs.

The lower hem has a delicate wavy edge with a slim teal line above it. To match that look, work the last rounds as follows.

  1. Rnd 29 in dusty teal: Knit.
  2. Rnd 30 in pale blue: K2tog, yo around.
  3. Rnd 31: Knit.
  4. Rnd 32: K1, yo, K2tog around to soften the wave.
  5. BO loosely knitwise.

Sew the back opening neatly, leaving enough room at the top to dress the bunny. You may use hidden snaps if desired, though the open cardigan in front and the back view not being shown allow a very discreet closure.

Cream Ruffle Collar

  1. Using cream and 2.75 mm needles, CO 48 sts.
  2. Rows 1-2: Knit.
  3. Row 3 RS: Kfb in every stitch. 96 sts.
  4. Rows 4-7: Garter stitch.
  5. BO loosely.
  6. Gather the cast-on edge slightly and sew around the neckline.

The collar should frame the face softly and sit under the cardigan neckline. It is small, rippled, and old-fashioned, adding to the field-trip storybook mood.

Large Bunny Cardigan

Back

  1. Using brown and 3 mm needles, CO 28 sts.
  2. Rows 1-6: K1, P1 rib.
  3. Rows 7-26: Stockinette.

  2. Rows 1-6: Work rib, keeping front edge in 3 sts garter for button band look.
  3. Rows 7-18: Continue as established.
  4. Add pocket flower motif over lower front: use duplicate stitch or intarsia for a single upright lavender bloom with green leaves. Position it about 5 rows above hem and 3 stitches in from side seam.
  5. At row matching back armhole, BO 3 sts at side edge.
  6. Work 8 rows even.
  7. Shape neck: at front edge, BO 4 sts once, then decrease 1 st at neck edge every other row 3 times.
  8. Work to shoulder height and BO remaining shoulder sts.

Right Front

Work as left front, reversing all shaping and adding the matching lavender bloom pocket motif.

Sleeves

Make 2

  1. Using brown, CO 20 sts.
  2. Rows 1-6: K1, P1 rib.
  3. Rows 7-24: Stockinette, increasing 1 st each side every 6th row 3 times. 26 sts.
  4. Cap shaping: BO 3 sts at beginning of next 2 rows, then decrease 1 stitch each side every RS row 6 times.
  5. BO remaining sts.

Finishing the Cardigan

  1. Sew shoulder seams.
  2. Set in sleeves.
  3. Sew side and sleeve seams.
  4. Pick up stitches around the full neck and front edges if you want a slightly firmer band, then work 2 rows garter and BO.

The cardigan in the image sits open, short, and slightly boxy. It should end near the high waist of the dress so the floral skirt remains fully visible. Keep the sleeve length just to the wrist, not overlong.

Periwinkle Headscarf Bonnet

This bonnet is a defining feature of the design. It wraps the head like a kerchief bonnet, covers the crown, and ties in a broad double-loop bow at the top front. The side sections sit over the upper head while the bunny ears remain underneath and visible at the sides.

  1. Using periwinkle blue and 3 mm needles, CO 18 sts.
  2. Work 6 rows garter.
  3. Next RS row: K2, M1L, knit to last 2 sts, M1R, K2.
  4. Rep increase row every RS row 8 times. 34 sts.
  5. Work 20 rows in stockinette with 2 garter edge stitches at each side.
  6. Decrease on every RS row by 1 stitch each side 6 times. 22 sts.
  7. Work 6 rows garter.
  8. BO loosely.

Make two side gathers near the lower sides so the bonnet cups the head. Sew the back edge lightly if needed. For the top tie, create a long i-cord or knitted band about 10 inches long and 1/2 inch wide. Wrap it across the front top edge and tie into a firm bow with two rounded loops. Stitch the bow in place so it keeps the exact shape shown in the image.

Large Bunny Shoes

The shoes are simple brown Mary Jane-style slippers with open instep ovals. They sit close to the foot and look soft, not hard-soled.

Make 2

  1. Using brown and 2.75 mm needles, CO 12 sts and join.
  2. Rnd 1: Knit.
  3. Rnd 2: Kfb all around. 24 sts.
  4. Rnds 3-7: Knit.
  5. Rnd 8: K6, K2tog 6 times, K6. 18 sts.
  6. Rnd 9: Knit.
  7. For instep opening, BO center 6 sts on top of foot, knit remaining 12 sts back and forth for 6 rows.
  8. Pick up 3 sts at one side of opening, CO 6 for strap line across front opening edge, pick up 3 at other side. 24 sts.
  9. Work 2 rounds.
  10. BO loosely and sew to fit around foot.

Mini Bear Body

The little bear mirrors the bunny’s outfit and color story. Its head is rounder, its ears are small and rounded, and its proportions are stubbier. Keep the expression simple and sweet.

Legs and Body

  1. Using beige-brown and 2.75 mm needles, CO 8 sts for each leg and join separately.
  2. Work 10 rounds knit on each leg.
  3. Join legs with 2 cast-on stitches between them. 18 sts.
  4. Work 12 rounds knit.

Mini Bear Dress, Cardigan, and Bonnet

Use the same colors and styling as the large bunny but at a smaller scale. This echo is very important to the look of the image, where the bear appears dressed as a tiny companion.

  • Dress: work a simple pale blue bodice over 18 stitches, then increase to 36 stitches for the skirt. Add a tiny floral border in blue, violet, and green over 6 to 8 rounds. Finish with a narrow wavy hem.
  • Cardigan: knit a short brown cardigan in three flat pieces. Add tiny blue-lavender floral accents if desired, but keep them minimal.
  • Bonnet: knit a small periwinkle kerchief shape and tie under the chin rather than into a top bow. In the image, the bear’s bonnet sits close around the ears and face.

Mini Bear Shoes

The bear’s feet are partly visible under the dress. You may leave them plain or add tiny brown slipper bases by covering the lower foot with a knitted shoe cuff in brown.

Tote Bag

The tote is a small beige knitted basket-style bag with blue decorative stitches near the upper section and two rounded handles. It stands upright beside the bunny.

  1. Using beige and 2.75 mm needles, CO 20 sts and join.
  2. Rnds 1-6: Knit.
  3. Rnd 7: Purl for turning ridge if desired.
  4. Rnds 8-15: Knit.
  5. Work 1 round of small blue accents: K4 beige, K2 blue, repeat around.
  6. Rnds 17-18: Knit in beige.
  7. Next round: BO 4 sts, knit 6, BO 4 sts, knit 6.
  8. Next round: CO 4 over each gap for handle bases.
  9. Work 4 rounds on all sts.
  10. BO firmly.

Stuff lightly with tissue while shaping, or line it with felt if you want it to hold its boxier form. The sample in the image appears softly structured, not floppy.

Lavender Stem

  1. Using green, make a 3-inch i-cord stem.
  2. Knit 3 tiny leaves flat: CO 3 sts, increase to 5, then decrease back to 1. Sew near the base.
  3. For flower spikes, knit or crochet tiny pointed teardrop petals in pale lavender, medium blue, and soft violet. Stitch them densely along the top half of the stem.

Arrange the colors so the bloom feels natural and softly shaded. The stem in the image lies on the table and adds a gentle field-gathered detail.

Binoculars

  1. Using charcoal, knit two tiny tubes: CO 6 sts for each, work 4 rounds, BO.
  2. Stuff very lightly.
  3. Sew the two tubes side by side.
  4. Add black circular lens rims to the front openings using satin-stitched yarn or tiny knitted rings.
  5. Use a strand of black yarn for the neck strap, tied in a soft loop.

The binoculars should look miniature and slightly chunky, with dark front lenses clearly visible like in the image.

Map

  1. Using parchment beige, CO 12 sts.
  2. Work 10 rows in garter stitch.
  3. BO.
  4. Embroider a simple green path or land shape, one small dark star, and a few tiny line details using green, brown, and dark thread.

Do not overdecorate the map. In the image, it is small, soft, and readable only as a tiny explorer’s map.

Facial Embroidery Guide

The large bunny face is minimal and balanced. Use fine black or deep brown yarn split thinly if needed. Make the nose as a small upside-down triangle or tiny satin-stitched wedge. Extend one straight stitch downward, then add two short curved mouth stitches. Keep all lines delicate.

The bear face is slightly darker and simpler. Use a tiny rounded triangular nose with a short center stitch and minimal mouth shaping. The eyes on both toys should sit low enough to feel gentle and childlike, but not so low that the faces look sad.

Color Placement Notes

  • Bunny fur: warm light beige
  • Bonnet: medium periwinkle blue
  • Dress: pale blue ground with blue-violet floral band and a faint teal hem accent
  • Cardigan: medium warm brown with blue-purple flower motifs near the lower fronts
  • Shoes: matching warm brown
  • Collar: soft cream
  • Accessories: natural beige, green, blue, charcoal, and parchment tones

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Dress the bunny first with the blue dress, then stitch the cream collar neatly around the neckline. Add the brown cardigan and check that the lower flower motifs sit at equal height on both fronts. Place the bonnet over the head so the ears fall from beneath it.

Tie and stitch the bonnet bow securely so it stays rounded and centered. Add the face last, using small measured stitches. Before knotting off, step back and compare both sides of the face for symmetry. A tiny adjustment makes a big difference.

Arrange the scene with the tote bag, lavender stem, map, binoculars, and mini bear close to the bunny’s feet. This final styling is part of the full design and completes the fieldtrip story shown in the image.

Care Notes

  • Display pieces are best kept away from constant direct sunlight.
  • Handle the binoculars, map, and lavender stem gently because of their small scale.
  • If giving to a young child, replace all safety eyes with embroidered details and secure every accessory firmly.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Is the bunny head centered and softly stuffed, not overfirm?
  • Do both ears drape evenly under the bonnet?
  • Does the dress show a centered front textured panel?
  • Is the floral skirt border spaced evenly around the hem?
  • Do both cardigan fronts match in length and flower placement?
  • Are the shoes snug and low on the feet?
  • Does the mini bear clearly echo the bunny’s outfit?
  • Are all small accessories included?

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For regular care, dust gently with clean dry hands or a very soft brush. Spot clean only when possible using a barely damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid soaking the stuffed pieces, especially the face and accessory details.

If a deeper clean is needed, remove surface dust first, then dab carefully and allow the item to air dry fully on a towel. Reshape the head, ears, and garments while damp. Store flat or upright in a dry place to preserve the smooth knitted texture and delicate finishing.
