This elegant knitted doll is designed to look like a collectible heirloom toy, a handmade storybook character, and a beautiful shelf display all at once. Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Skirt width at widest point: about 9 inches across when laid flat
  • Hat brim diameter: about 7 inches

Construction Overview

The doll is worked mostly in the round from the feet upward, then shaped through the body and head. The dress is knitted separately from the bodice down for better skirt fullness and cleaner floral placement.

The hair is made with attached strands and set into a center-part style with long curled side lengths. Roses, leaves, and vines are knitted separately and sewn on to match the image as closely as possible.

Color Placement Notes

To match the image, keep the doll’s skin very pale, the hair dark gray, and the dress and hat a rich midnight navy. The floral decorations should be concentrated near the lower skirt, with one central large rose and several deep red and dusty pink roses climbing upward.

The bodice has a cream neckline, a cream decorative panel at the front waist area, and a single red rose centered high on the chest. The waist sash sits slightly to the doll’s right side and finishes in a red gathered flower.

Indented Face Shaping

To match the soft doll face in the photo, create a very gentle eye indentation and nose ridge. Thread skin tone yarn on a long needle. Enter at the base of the head, come out at the left eye mark, go across to the right eye mark, and return to the base. Pull lightly.

Repeat once more only if needed. Do not over-tighten. The face in the image is smooth and sweet, with tiny features and rounded cheeks rather than deep sculpting.

Arms

Make 2.

  1. Using skin tone and 2.75 mm needles, CO 10 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: Kfb in each st around. 20 sts.

  4. Rnd 7: K2tog around. 10 sts.
  5. Rnds 8 to 22: Knit.
  6. Stuff hand and lower arm lightly.
  7. Rnd 23: Switch to midnight blue and knit 8 rnds for sleeve underlayer.
  8. Flatten top opening and sew closed later when attaching.

Puffed Sleeve Caps

Make 2 in midnight blue on 3.25 mm needles, worked flat.

  1. CO 24 sts.
  2. Rows 1 and 2: K.
  3. Row 3: K1, m1L, knit to last st, m1R, k1. 26 sts.
  4. Row 4: P.
  5. Row 5: K1, m1L, knit to last st, m1R, k1. 28 sts.

  9. Row 12: P.
  10. Row 13: K2tog, knit to last 2 sts, ssk. 24 sts.
  11. BO knitwise.
  12. Gather lower edge gently and wrap around top of each arm to form the rounded sleeve puff.

Dress Bodice

The dress is separate from the body so it sits cleanly and creates the same elegant shape shown in the image. It should fit closely through the upper torso, then flare strongly into the skirt.

  1. Using midnight blue and 3.25 mm needles, CO 48 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K.
  3. Rnd 2: P.
  4. Rnd 3: K.
  5. Rnd 4: Change to cream and purl.
  6. Rnd 5: Knit.
  7. Rnd 6: Change back to midnight blue and knit.
  8. Rnds 7 to 12: Knit.
  9. Rnd 13: K10, p4, k20, p4, k10. This helps define side shaping visually.
  10. Rnd 14: Knit.
  11. Rnd 15: K2tog, k20, k2tog, k2tog, k20, k2tog. 44 sts.
  12. Rnd 16: Knit.

  15. BO loosely.

Sew or ladder-stitch the dress opening if you worked it flat instead. Slide bodice onto doll and tack in place invisibly at shoulders and waist.

Skirt

The skirt needs generous width to echo the full bell shape in the image. It should stand away from the body slightly even before flowers are added. Work from the lower bodice edge downward.

  1. Pick up 72 sts evenly around lower bodice edge using midnight blue.
  2. Rnd 1: Knit.
  3. Rnd 2: K5, m1R, repeat around. 84 sts.

Vines

Knit vines as narrow I-cords so the decoration remains fully knitted in spirit and visually close to the photo.

  3. Make at least 10 lengths in mixed sizes.
  4. Arrange them in upward curving lines from hem toward mid-skirt.

Skirt Floral Layout

To match the image, center the biggest rose slightly above the cream hem at the front center. Place medium deep red roses to both lower sides. Add dusty pink roses above and between them. Let the vines travel upward in soft S-curves.

  • Front center: 1 extra-large deep red rose
  • Lower left and lower right: 2 medium deep red roses
  • Mid-left and mid-right: 2 dusty pink roses
  • Outer lower sides: 3 to 4 mixed red and pink roses
  • Upper skirt area: scattered rosebuds and leaves

Sew vines first. Attach leaves next, angling them outward. Sew roses last so they overlap the vines naturally. Keep most of the floral weight in the lower half of the skirt, exactly as shown in the picture.

  4. For bangs, divide into 5 narrow groups. Braid each group loosely for 1 inch, steam lightly, let dry, then undo for soft bends.
  5. Trim bangs to eyebrow length.
  6. For side sections, twist each strand pair, coil gently around a knitting needle, steam, cool, then release for loose ringlet waves.
  7. Sew the center part down flat for 1.5 inches from the forehead crown.

  • Left hand: purse hangs over forearm, teacup and saucer rest in hand
  • Right hand: small book held upright against chest
  • Table accessories: basket sits to doll’s left, watering can to doll’s right, extra shoes in front right

If you want the doll permanently posed as shown, tack the accessories in place with a few hidden stitches. For removable pieces, use tiny loops and snaps.

Facial Embroidery

  • Eyes: embroider 2 vertical oval eyes in black, each about 2 stitches wide and 3 rows tall
  • Lashes: add 3 short upward lashes at outer corners
  • Nose: 1 horizontal stitch in skin tone or very light beige, centered between eyes and 3 rows below
  • Mouth: optional tiny blush-pink straight stitch, very short and low on face
  • Cheeks: lightly shade with pink pencil or soft pastel

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Sew arms at the shoulder line so they angle slightly forward. Slide dress onto body and tack it neatly at back neck and waist. Add the hair, then the hat. Check that the face remains visible below the brim.

Attach skirt roses, vines, and leaves after the dress is fully settled on the doll. Keep the arrangement dense near the hem and lighter toward the bodice. Embroider the eyes last so the expression is centered after hair placement.

Care Notes

Display the doll away from direct sunlight and high humidity. If the doll is for gentle play, secure all accessories firmly and avoid leaving loose small parts attached for very young children.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Hat brim shaped with cream edge visible
  • Chest rose centered
  • Waist sash flower placed at doll’s right side

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Spot clean only with a lightly damp cloth and mild soap. Do not machine wash. Reshape flowers, hat brim, and curls with fingers while damp. Dry flat on a towel, away from heat.

For long-term storage, wrap the doll in acid-free tissue and place in a breathable box. Avoid crushing the hat, roses, or skirt. Stuff shoes and basket lightly with tissue to help them keep their form.
