This elegant knitted ferret is designed with a sweet long neck, a softly shaped white face, pastel striped overalls, a tiny mushroom crossbody bag, a floral crown, a striped hat with pom-poms, and small strawberry shoes. It is a charming handmade toy for collectors, nursery decor, baby shower gifting, and shoppers looking for a knitted animal doll, artisan soft toy, heirloom plush, or boutique nursery gift with delicate handmade detail.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

The finished ferret measures about 12 to 13 inches tall from the soles of the feet to the top of the headband flowers.

The hat, shoes, acorns, and mushroom bag are removable accessories. The overalls are worked separately and dressed onto the body.

Materials

  • Main yarn: DK weight in soft white or cream for head, neck, body, arms, and feet.
  • Pastel blue yarn: DK weight for overalls, hat stripes, flower petals, and decorative details.
  • Very pale blush yarn: DK weight for flower petals, shoe trim, and bag strap if desired.
  • Beige or oatmeal yarn: DK weight for mushroom bag and shoe base.
  • Red yarn: Small amount for mushroom cap and strawberry appliqués.
  • Green yarn: Small amount for flower stems, leaves, strawberry tops, and mushroom grass.
  • Yellow yarn: Small amount for flower centers.
  • Tan and brown yarn: Small amounts for the two acorns.
  • Black safety eyes: 10 mm to 12 mm.
  • Pink embroidery yarn or pink DK yarn split thinner: for nose and mouth.
  • Strong white thread or clear filament: for whiskers.
  • Polyester toy stuffing.
  • 2 small wooden buttons for overall straps.
  • 2 tiny buttons for shoes if desired.
  • Double-pointed needles: 2.75 mm or size needed for a firm fabric.
  • Straight or circular needles: 2.75 mm to 3 mm for flat sections.
  • Tapestry needle, stitch markers, scissors, sewing pins.

Gauge

30 stitches and 40 rounds = 4 inches in stockinette stitch worked firmly in the round using DK yarn and 2.75 mm needles.

A firm gauge is important. The toy should not show stuffing through the knitted fabric.

Construction Overview

The ferret is built from separate knitted pieces and then assembled with careful shaping. The head is large and rounded with a gentle muzzle. The neck is long and straight. The body is slim under the overalls. The legs are short, slightly tapered, and soft. The arms are narrow and hang close to the body.

The overall silhouette matters. The face is round but not wide. The neck is longer than a typical bear or bunny doll. The overalls are roomy, striped, and softly ballooned. The floral crown sits low across the forehead and wraps from ear to ear.

Head

This creates the main rounded cranial shape. Stuff lightly as you begin to close later, but do not overfill the lower face area yet.

Face Placement and Gentle Muzzle Shape

The photographed ferret has a subtle knitted muzzle rather than a strongly protruding snout. To copy that look, shape the lower face with a very soft stuffing pocket and a little tension when embroidering the nose.

On Rnd 27, place markers so the front center covers 20 stitches. Keep the eyes centered horizontally within this front section.

  1. Rnd 27: Knit. (64)
  2. Rnd 28: [k6, k2tog] rep around. (56)
  3. Rnd 29: Knit. (56)
  4. Rnd 30: [k5, k2tog] rep around. (48)

Insert safety eyes now between Rnds 20 and 21 with 10 stitches between them across the face. The eyes in the image sit quite wide and slightly low, which gives the calm, gentle expression.

Add extra stuffing above and around the eyes so the forehead stays softly full. Keep the lower front less stuffed so the nose embroidery can draw the muzzle inward slightly.

  1. Rnd 31: Knit. (48)
  2. Rnd 32: [k4, k2tog] rep around. (40)
  3. Rnd 33: Knit. (40)

Do not close completely yet. The head transitions into a narrow neck, so the decrease continues more gradually than a round ball would.

Neck

The neck is one of the defining features of this ferret. It is long, cylindrical, and evenly narrow, with a rib-like vertical look in the finished image. To create that effect, work the neck mostly in 1×1 rib.

  1. Rnd 34: [k3, k2tog] rep around. (32)
  2. Rnd 35: k1, p1 around. (32)
  3. Rnd 36-55: k1, p1 around for 20 rnds. (32)

Stuff the neck firmly but evenly. Use small tufts and a chopstick or stuffing tool. The neck must stand upright and not collapse, but it should still feel soft, not rigid.

Body

Continue directly from the neck using white yarn. The body is slimmer than the overalls, because the overalls provide most of the rounded lower silhouette.

  1. Rnd 56: [k1, inc] rep around. (48)
  2. Rnd 57: Knit. (48)
  3. Rnd 58: [k7, inc] rep around. (54)
  4. Rnd 59-68: Knit 10 rnds. (54)
  5. Rnd 69: [k7, k2tog] rep around. (48)
  6. Rnd 70: Knit. (48)
  7. Rnd 71: [k6, k2tog] rep around. (42)
  8. Rnd 72: Knit. (42)
  9. Rnd 73: [k5, k2tog] rep around. (36)
  10. Rnd 74: Knit. (36)

Stuff the body firmly at the upper torso and a little softer at the lower torso. This helps the doll sit and stand naturally while still filling the overalls.

  1. Rnd 75: [k4, k2tog] rep around. (30)
  2. Rnd 76: Knit. (30)
  3. Rnd 77: [k3, k2tog] rep around. (24)

Break yarn, thread through remaining stitches, pull closed, and secure. This lower opening will be covered by the overalls and legs during assembly.

Arms Make 2

The arms are slim, simple tubes that taper slightly at the wrist and widen softly at the upper arm. They hang almost straight down in the image and are attached high on the body under the overall bib line.

Using white yarn, CO 8 sts. Join in the round.

  1. Rnd 1: Knit. (8)
  2. Rnd 2: Inc in every st. (16)
  3. Rnd 3-6: Knit 4 rnds. (16)
  4. Rnd 7: [k2, k2tog] rep around. (12)
  5. Rnd 8-24: Knit 17 rnds. (12)
  6. Rnd 25: [k3, inc] rep around. (15)
  7. Rnd 26-32: Knit 7 rnds. (15)

Stuff only the lower half and middle lightly. Keep the top 1 inch unstuffed for easier sewing and a soft shoulder line.

Flatten the arm opening and sew closed. Shape the end slightly curved when attaching so the paws angle inward a little.

Legs Make 2

The feet are white and rounded. Above the foot, the leg is short and disappears into the roomy overalls. The photo shows only the lower front of each foot clearly, so a modest shaped foot is best.

Using white yarn, CO 8 sts. Join in the round.

  1. Rnd 1: Knit. (8)
  2. Rnd 2: Inc in every st. (16)
  3. Rnd 3: [k1, inc] rep around. (24)
  4. Rnd 4-6: Knit 3 rnds. (24)

Now shape the sole and upper foot.

  1. Rnd 7: Knit 12, k2tog 6 times. (18)
  2. Rnd 8: Knit. (18)
  3. Rnd 9: [k1, k2tog] rep around. (12)
  4. Rnd 10-20: Knit 11 rnds. (12)
  5. Rnd 21: [k2, inc] rep around. (16)
  6. Rnd 22-26: Knit 5 rnds. (16)

Stuff the foot firmly and the leg lightly. Leave the last 6 rounds less filled. Flatten and sew the top closed.

Before sewing to the body, bend the foot forward slightly and tack the ankle angle so the soles point straight ahead.

Ears Make 2

The ears are very small rounded ferret ears, mostly hidden by the flower crown. They should not stand tall. They should sit at the upper corners of the head and peek out gently.

Using white yarn, CO 6 sts.

  1. Row 1 RS: Knit.
  2. Row 2 WS: Purl.
  3. Row 3: k1, m1, k4, m1, k1. (8)
  4. Row 4: Purl.
  5. Row 5: Knit.
  6. Row 6: Purl.
  7. Row 7: ssk, k4, k2tog. (6)
  8. Row 8: Purl.
  9. Row 9: ssk, k2, k2tog. (4)
  10. Row 10: Purl.
  11. Row 11: k2tog twice. (2)

Bind off. Make a second ear. Fold the lower edge slightly and sew near the crown line, about 2 stitches behind the eye line and high on the head.

Tail

The tail is not strongly visible in the photo, so keep it short, slim, and simple. It should help balance the ferret without distracting from the front styling.

Using white yarn, CO 6 sts. Join in the round.

  1. Rnd 1-14: Knit. (6)
  2. Rnd 15: [k1, inc] rep around. (9)
  3. Rnd 16-22: Knit 7 rnds. (9)

Stuff very lightly. Flatten the open end and sew to the lower back body, centered just above the leg line.

Pastel Striped Overalls

The overalls are the most important clothing piece in the image. They have wide pale blue and white stripes, cable-like vertical texture on both legs, a fitted chest with embroidered flowers, and narrow shoulder straps fastened with buttons.

Work the overalls in separate flat and circular sections for the best control of fit and stripe placement.

Leg Section Make 2

Using pastel blue yarn, CO 24 sts. Work in the round. Change colors every 4 rounds to create broad stripes.

Stripe sequence throughout the legs:

  • Rounds 1-4: pastel blue
  • Rounds 5-8: white
  • Rounds 9-12: pastel blue
  • Rounds 13-16: white
  • Rounds 17-20: pastel blue

To imitate the raised braided columns seen in the image, use these simple faux cable panels:

  • Panel positions: stitches 6-8 and stitches 16-18 of each leg.
  • On every 6th round, work a 3-stitch right twist: slip 1 stitch to cable needle and hold back, knit next 2, then knit slipped stitch.
  1. Rnd 1-20: Work stripe sequence as above, knitting all sts and working the two cable panels on Rnds 6, 12, and 18. (24)

Bind off the first leg. Work the second leg the same, but do not bind off. Join the two legs.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Join Legs

Place both legs side by side with cable panels facing front. Knit across one leg, CO 4 sts for center front bridge, knit across second leg, CO 4 sts for center back bridge. (56)

  1. Body Rnd 1: Knit all sts, maintaining stripe color sequence. (56)
  2. Body Rnd 2-14: Continue in stripes for 13 more rnds. (56)

Place the front center so the two cable columns from each leg remain visible on the front trouser area. The overalls in the image are roomy, so do not reduce too much at the hip.

  1. Body Rnd 15: [k12, k2tog] rep 4 times. (52)
  2. Body Rnd 16-20: Knit. (52)
  3. Body Rnd 21: [k11, k2tog] rep 4 times. (48)
  4. Body Rnd 22-24: Knit. (48)

Bind off 20 stitches for the back upper opening at the start of the next row. Continue flat across remaining 28 front stitches for bib.

Front Bib

The bib is pastel blue with small embroidered flowers and a soft cable texture at the edges.

  1. Row 1 RS: Knit 28.
  2. Row 2 WS: Purl 28.
  3. Row 3: k3, place 3-stitch right twist, k16, place 3-stitch left twist, k3.
  4. Row 4: Purl.
  5. Rows 5-14: Repeat Rows 1-4 twice more, then work Rows 1-2 once. Keep 3-stitch twisted columns near each edge every 4th RS row.

At this point the bib should rise to the upper chest of the ferret.

  1. Next Row RS: k8, BO 12, k8.

This forms the central top dip and creates two narrow strap bases.

Straps

Work first strap over 8 stitches.

  1. Row 1: Knit.
  2. Row 2: Purl.
  3. Repeat Rows 1-2 until strap measures 3 inches.
  4. Buttonhole Row: k2, yo, k2tog, knit to end.
  5. Next 3 rows: continue in st st.

Bind off. Rejoin yarn to remaining 8 stitches and work second strap the same.

Sew the overall back edge down neatly if needed. The back can stay open enough to dress the doll easily, or you may add a hidden snap.

Flower Embroidery on Bib

Use duplicate stitch and simple straight embroidery to add three tiny flowers on the bib front. Place them centered between the cable panels.

  • Flower 1: pale pink petals with yellow center
  • Flower 2: peach petals with yellow center
  • Flower 3: white petals with yellow center
  • Add green stems and two tiny leaves beneath each bloom

Keep the flowers delicate and vertical, just like the image. The embroidery should sit in the center chest area and remain small compared with the bib.

Mushroom Bag

The tiny circular crossbody bag is beige with a red mushroom motif on the front and a narrow strap worn diagonally from shoulder to opposite hip.

Bag Front Make 1

Using beige yarn, CO 6 sts. Join in the round.

  1. Rnd 1: Inc in every st. (12)
  2. Rnd 2: [k1, inc] rep around. (18)
  3. Rnd 3: [k2, inc] rep around. (24)
  4. Rnd 4: [k3, inc] rep around. (30)
  5. Rnd 5-8: Knit. (30)

Bind off loosely.

Bag Back Make 1

Work exactly the same as the front.

Bag Assembly

Place front and back together. Mattress stitch or whip stitch around the edge, leaving a small opening to add a touch of stuffing. Close the opening.

Mushroom Motif

  • Embroider a red rounded cap near the center front.
  • Add 3 to 4 tiny white dots on the cap.
  • Embroider a cream stem beneath it.
  • Add a small green tuft of grass at the base.

Bag Strap

Using blush or beige yarn, CO 2 sts.

  1. Row 1: Knit.
  2. Row 2: Knit.
  3. Repeat until the cord measures 9 to 10 inches.

Bind off. Sew each end to the top sides of the bag. Place the strap diagonally across the ferret from the left shoulder to the right hip, matching the photo.

Floral Crown

The flower crown sits across the top front of the head, from one ear to the other. It includes cream, pale blue, and pale blush flowers. Each flower is small, soft, and flat rather than highly dimensional.

Crown Base

Using green yarn, CO 28 sts.

  1. Row 1: Knit.
  2. Row 2: Purl.
  3. Row 3: Knit.

Bind off. This creates a narrow flexible band.

Small 5-Petal Flowers Make 5

Use cream, pale blue, and pale blush. Make two cream, two blue, and one blush flower.

For each flower, CO 15 sts in one color.

  1. Row 1 WS: Purl.
  2. Row 2 RS: [k1, k2tog, pass first stitch over, k1] rep across to form petal groups.

Thread yarn through remaining petal loops and pull into a flower. Add a yellow center knot or tiny embroidered circle.

Sew the flowers onto the green band slightly overlapping. Arrange the cream flowers near the center, blue on the sides, and blush tucked near one ear as shown in the image.

Striped Hat with Pom-Poms

The hat is a separate accessory placed beside the ferret. It is rounded, striped in white and pastel blue, and topped with two pom-poms. The brim is ribbed.

Using pastel blue yarn, CO 48 sts. Join in the round.

  1. Rnd 1-8: k1, p1 rib. (48)

Now begin striped body of hat, changing every 4 rounds.

  • Rounds 9-12: white
  • Rounds 13-16: pastel blue
  • Rounds 17-20: white
  • Rounds 21-24: pastel blue
  • Rounds 25-28: white
  1. Rnd 9-28: Knit in stripes. (48)
  2. Rnd 29: [k6, k2tog] rep around. (42)
  3. Rnd 30: Knit. (42)
  4. Rnd 31: [k5, k2tog] rep around. (36)
  5. Rnd 32: Knit. (36)
  6. Rnd 33: [k4, k2tog] rep around. (30)
  7. Rnd 34: Knit. (30)
  8. Rnd 35: [k3, k2tog] rep around. (24)
  9. Rnd 36: [k2, k2tog] rep around. (18)
  10. Rnd 37: [k1, k2tog] rep around. (12)

Thread yarn through remaining stitches and close. Make two pom-poms in pastel blue and sew symmetrically near the top sides of the hat.

Strawberry Shoes Make 2

The shoes are soft cream sandals with an open toe shape, a side strap, and a tiny red strawberry decoration on the front.

Sole

Using beige or cream yarn, CO 8 sts.

  1. Row 1 RS: Knit.

Upper and Strap

Pick up 12 stitches around one long side and toe edge of the sole.

  1. Row 1: Knit.
  2. Row 2: Purl.
  3. Row 3: k4, BO 4, k4.
  4. Row 4: Purl 4, CO 4, purl 4.
  5. Row 5: Knit.

This forms the open front sandal look. For the side strap, pick up 4 stitches at one side.

  1. Strap Row 1: Knit 4.
  2. Strap Row 2: Purl 4.
  3. Repeat until strap reaches across ankle opening.

Strawberry Appliqué Make 2

Using red yarn, embroider or knit a tiny berry triangle with rounded top on the shoe front. Add green leafy top and one or two tiny white seed dots.

Acorns Make 2

The tiny acorns are optional but they help match the full styled scene shown in the image.

Acorn Nut Make 2

Using tan yarn, CO 6 sts and join in the round.

  1. Rnd 1: Inc in every st. (12)
  2. Rnd 2-5: Knit. (12)
  3. Rnd 6: [k1, k2tog] rep around. (8)

Stuff lightly and close.

Acorn Cap Make 2

Using brown yarn, CO 8 sts and join in the round.

  1. Rnd 1-3: Knit. (8)
  2. Rnd 4: [k1, inc] rep around. (12)
  3. Rnd 5: Knit. (12)

Place over nut top and sew in place. Add a tiny stem knot.

Assembly

  1. Sew the legs to the lower body, spaced so the ferret stands balanced with feet facing forward.
  2. Sew the arms high on the body, slightly below the neck base, angling downward close to the torso.
  3. Sew the ears high and slightly outward.
  4. Sew the tail centered at the back.
  5. Dress the ferret in the overalls. Bring the straps over the shoulders and fasten to the bib front with the wooden buttons.
  6. Add the mushroom bag crossbody style.
  7. Place the flower crown low over the forehead.

When fitting the overalls, allow a slightly loose and rounded shape at the hips and thighs. The image shows a soft, cozy fit, not a tight garment.

Facial Embroidery

The face is what makes this ferret feel graceful and gentle. The nose is a small soft pink triangle, placed low between the eyes. The mouth is a short centered line dropping from the nose and splitting into a tiny curved expression.

  • Embroider a pink triangular nose centered 5 to 6 rounds below the eye line.
  • Add one short vertical stitch under the nose.
  • Add two tiny slanted mouth stitches, one to each side.
  • Use white or clear thread to add 3 whiskers on each side.

Do not overwork the expression. The beauty of this face is its restraint. Small neat stitches look best.

Styling Notes for Accuracy

  • Head: round and smooth, not oversized like a teddy bear.
  • Neck: long, straight, and visibly narrower than the head.
  • Eyes: glossy, wide-set, and slightly low.
  • Overalls: pale blue and white stripes with visible vertical textured columns.
  • Bib flowers: tiny, centered, delicate, and pastel.
  • Bag: small and round with a red mushroom motif.
  • Flower crown: soft pastel flowers across the crown line.
  • Hat: striped with two pom-poms.
  • Shoes: open-toe look with strawberry detail.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the doll from the front before fully securing every seam. Make sure the neck stands centered, the feet point forward, and the bib sits straight. Adjust the flower crown so it frames the forehead evenly. Embroider the nose last, because that small placement change can strongly affect the expression.

Care Notes

Display use is best for this knitted ferret. If it will be handled often, sew every accessory very securely. Keep small parts away from very young children unless all embellishments are embroidered and safety-tested.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Eyes evenly placed
  • Nose centered
  • Whiskers balanced on both sides
  • Overalls fitted neatly
  • Straps buttoned evenly
  • Bag hangs diagonally
  • Flower crown centered
  • Shoes match in size and angle
  • Feet balanced for standing

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Spot clean gently with a damp cloth and mild soap. Do not twist or wring. Reshape while damp and dry flat away from direct heat. Store in a clean dry place, ideally in breathable fabric rather than plastic, so the yarn stays fresh and the stuffing remains evenly conditioned.
