Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This knitted cow is worked as a structured amigurumi toy with separate pieces sewn together. The shape is intentionally round and seated, with a large oval head, wide pink muzzle, chubby belly, dangling legs, rounded arms, soft hooves, and layered clothing pieces.

The toy in the photo has a beginner-friendly construction, but it uses many small details. Work slowly, count every row, and pin all parts before sewing. The most important visual points are the tall cream head, pink muzzle panel, black ears, big white eyes, textured blue overalls, cream cardigan with embroidery, brown bag strap, apple, hedgehog charm, and green flower sandals.

  • Finished height: about 12 inches from top of head to bottom of sandals when seated.
  • Skill level: confident beginner to intermediate.
  • Main technique: knitting small amigurumi pieces flat and in the round, then seaming and shaping.
  • Recommended yarn: DK or light worsted cotton-acrylic blend.
  • Needle size: US 3 / 3.25 mm double-pointed needles and straight needles.
  • Gauge: 6 stitches and 8 rows = 1 inch in stockinette, worked firmly.

Important Construction Notes

Use a tight gauge so the stuffing does not show. For amigurumi knitting, your fabric should feel firmer than a normal sweater fabric. If your stitches look loose, go down one needle size.

Most body parts are knitted from the bottom upward. The head is shaped like a tall rounded oval. The muzzle is a separate pink oval patch sewn to the front of the head. The black patch at the top of the head is embroidered and partially duplicate-stitched after the head is stuffed.

The cardigan is made as a separate sleeveless vest-style jacket. The arms are cream and pass through the cardigan visually. The overalls are worked separately and sewn to the body with a front bib and shoulder straps.

Main Cow Head

Work the head in cream yarn in the round. The head should be wider at the lower cheek area and narrower at the crown, with a soft oval shape. Stuff firmly but keep the surface smooth.

  1. CO 12 sts in cream and divide evenly on double-pointed needles. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts. 12 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Kfb in every st around. 24 sts.

Pink Muzzle Patch

The muzzle is a wide oval patch that covers the lower front of the face. It begins just below the eyes and curves under the chin. Use pale pink yarn and work flat in stockinette with garter edges to prevent curling.

  1. CO 8 sts in pale pink.
  2. Row 1: K all sts. 8 sts.
  3. Row 2: K1, p6, k1. 8 sts.
  4. Row 3: K1, kfb, k4, kfb, k1. 10 sts.
  5. Row 4: K1, p8, k1. 10 sts.
  6. Row 5: K1, kfb, k6, kfb, k1. 12 sts.
  7. Row 6: K1, p10, k1. 12 sts.
  8. Row 7: K1, kfb, k8, kfb, k1. 14 sts.
  9. Row 8: K1, p12, k1. 14 sts.
  10. Row 9: K1, kfb, k10, kfb, k1. 16 sts.
  11. Row 10: K1, p14, k1. 16 sts.
  12. Rows 11 to 18: Continue in stockinette with 1 garter edge st at each side. 16 sts.
  13. Row 19: K1, ssk, k10, k2tog, k1. 14 sts.
  14. Row 20: K1, p12, k1. 14 sts.
  15. Row 21: K1, ssk, k8, k2tog, k1. 12 sts.
  16. Row 22: K1, p10, k1. 12 sts.
  17. Row 23: K1, ssk, k6, k2tog, k1. 10 sts.
  18. Row 24: K1, p8, k1. 10 sts.
  19. Row 25: K1, ssk, k4, k2tog, k1. 8 sts.
  20. BO all sts, leaving a long sewing tail.

Pin the muzzle to the lower front of the head. The top edge should sit about 6 rounds below the crown shaping, and the lower edge should curve under the face. Sew around the edge with small mattress stitches. Add a whisper of stuffing under the center before closing the last inch.

Black Head Patch

The cow has an irregular black patch over the top right side of the head, spreading between the ears and partly behind the eyes. This is best made with duplicate stitch and light surface embroidery after the head is complete.

  1. Thread black yarn on a tapestry needle.
  2. Starting at the top center of the head, duplicate-stitch a patch about 16 sts wide and 12 rows tall.
  3. Shape the lower edge unevenly by adding shorter black stitches in groups of 2, 3, and 4 rows.
  4. Place the patch mostly on the viewer’s right side of the head, leaving a cream strip visible above the left eye.
  5. Add 5 small cream duplicate stitches inside the patch to imitate the tiny white flecks seen in the image.

Eyes and Face

The eyes are oversized, round, bright, and slightly playful. They sit high on the face, directly above the pink muzzle. The spacing is close, giving the cow a sweet surprised expression.

  • Place the left eye between head rounds 18 and 23, about 7 sts left of center.
  • Place the right eye between head rounds 18 and 23, about 7 sts right of center.
  • Leave about 3 knitted stitches between the eyes.
  • If using sew-on eyes, stitch firmly through the head several times.
  • If using safety eyes, install before fully closing the head, but only after checking muzzle placement.

For nostrils, use black embroidery thread. Make one short vertical stitch on each side of the lower pink muzzle. Each nostril should be about 2 rows tall and placed 5 sts from the center line. Add a tiny diagonal stitch beside each nostril for the soft curved look.

For the mouth, use one subtle dark pink or black stitch under the center of the muzzle. Keep it very small. The image shows the muzzle as simple and soft, so avoid a large smile.

Horns

The horns are small cream nubs at the top of the head. One is clearly visible on the left side, while the other is partly hidden by the apple and hedgehog accessory.

  1. CO 10 sts in cream and divide in the round.
  2. Rnds 1 to 3: K all sts. 10 sts.
  3. Rnd 4: K3, k2tog, repeat twice. 8 sts.
  4. Rnd 5: K all sts. 8 sts.
  5. Rnd 6: K2tog around. 4 sts.
  6. Cut yarn and pull closed.
  7. Make a second horn the same way.

Stuff each horn lightly with a tiny pinch of fiberfill. Sew the horns to the crown, about 8 sts apart. Angle them slightly outward, not straight upward. The visible horn should lean gently to the left.

Black Floppy Ears

The ears are large, oval, black, and floppy. They sit at the sides of the head just below the horns. Each ear curves downward with a soft folded base.

  1. CO 8 sts in black.
  2. Row 1: K all sts. 8 sts.
  3. Row 2: P all sts. 8 sts.
  4. Row 3: K1, kfb, k4, kfb, k1. 10 sts.
  5. Row 4: P all sts. 10 sts.
  6. Row 5: K1, kfb, k6, kfb, k1. 12 sts.
  7. Row 6: P all sts. 12 sts.
  8. Row 7: K1, kfb, k8, kfb, k1. 14 sts.
  9. Row 8: P all sts. 14 sts.
  10. Rows 9 to 18: Work in stockinette. 14 sts.
  11. Row 19: K1, ssk, k8, k2tog, k1. 12 sts.
  12. Row 20: P all sts. 12 sts.
  13. Row 21: K1, ssk, k6, k2tog, k1. 10 sts.
  14. Row 22: P all sts. 10 sts.
  15. Row 23: K1, ssk, k4, k2tog, k1. 8 sts.
  16. Row 24: P all sts. 8 sts.
  17. Row 25: K1, ssk, k2, k2tog, k1. 6 sts.
  18. BO all sts.

Make two ears. Fold the CO edge slightly in half and sew through the fold to create a cupped base. Attach each ear to the side of the head between rounds 16 and 22. The ears should hang outward and down, framing the face.

Body

The cow’s body is round and pear-shaped. The overalls cover most of it, but the cream upper chest remains visible above the bib. Work the body firmly so it can support the large head.

Blue Overalls

The overalls are denim blue, loose, and rounded over the belly. They include two trouser legs, a large body section, a front bib, and shoulder straps. Work the fabric a little looser than the body pieces so it looks like clothing layered over the toy.

Overall Pants

Joining the Main Toy

Before sewing permanently, pin all main pieces together. The head should be large compared with the body, creating the soft storybook proportion shown in the image. The body should sit upright, with legs dangling forward.

  1. Place the body on a flat surface and mark the center front.
  2. Sew the legs to the lower body first, checking that both hang evenly.
  3. Slide or sew the blue overalls into position over the belly.
  4. Attach the bib and straps after the pants sit correctly.
  5. Place the cardigan over the shoulders and tack it lightly to the body.
  6. Sew arms under the cardigan armholes, angled downward.
  7. Position the head on the neck area and pin firmly.
  8. Sew the head to the body with two full rounds of stitching for strength.
  9. Add ears, horns, apple, and hedgehog after the head is attached.
  10. Finish with bag, sandals, buttons, and embroidery details.

Detailed Stitch Placement Guide

Use these placements to keep the toy close to the image. Small changes can make the cow look like a different character, so check the face and clothing often as you work.

  • Eyes: high on the face, close together, slightly above the top curve of the muzzle.
  • Muzzle: wide and rounded, covering the lower front of the head from cheek to cheek.
  • Ears: black, floppy, attached beside the eyes and slightly below horn level.
  • Horns: small cream horns, not long or sharp.
  • Body: round belly, wider at lower half.
  • Overalls: denim blue, roomy, with a front bib and visible shoulder straps.
  • Cardigan: cream, open front, floral embroidery on both sides.
  • Bag strap: diagonal from left shoulder to right hip.
  • Sandals: green with tan soles, black toe openings, and white flowers.
  • Apple: red, round, on top of head near the black patch.
  • Hedgehog: tiny beige and brown charm beside the apple.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

After all parts are attached, refine the expression. Use a long needle and cream yarn to gently sculpt the face by passing from the back of the head to the inner corner of one eye, then back again. Repeat on the other eye and pull only slightly.

Brush the muzzle lightly with your fingers so the pink stitches sit evenly. Straighten the cardigan fronts and make sure the buttons line up vertically. The bag should rest naturally against the overalls, not float away from the body.

  • Check that the head is centered over the body.
  • Check that both eyes are level.
  • Check that the muzzle is smooth and softly stuffed.
  • Check that the ears droop evenly.
  • Check that the sandals point forward.
  • Trim all yarn tails and bury them deeply inside the toy.

Care Notes

This knitted cow is best treated as a handmade decorative soft toy. If made for a child, avoid beads, loose buttons, pipe cleaners, and any small detachable accessories. Embroider details instead of using hard pieces for safer play.

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if the toy includes buttons, beads, or delicate embroidery.
  • Press gently in a towel to remove moisture.
  • Air dry flat in a shaded place.
  • Do not tumble dry.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The cow has a cream head and body with a pink muzzle.
  • The black head patch is placed near the apple side.
  • The large round eyes sit above the muzzle.
  • The ears are black, soft, and floppy.
  • The overalls are blue with a visible bib and straps.
  • The cardigan is cream with red floral embroidery and three buttons.
  • The brown crossbody bag has a flower on the front.
  • The green sandals include white flowers and tan soles.
  • The red apple and tiny hedgehog sit on the head.
  • The toy sits with long legs dangling forward.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the cow in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Long exposure to bright light can fade the red apple, blue overalls, and green sandals. Keep it away from damp shelves or closed boxes where moisture can affect the stuffing.

To remove dust, use a soft dry brush and work in the direction of the knitted stitches. For embroidered areas, dab gently instead of rubbing. If the cardigan flowers become flattened, lift them carefully with the tip of a tapestry needle.

For long-term storage, wrap the toy in acid-free tissue or a clean cotton cloth. Do not compress the head accessories, ears, or bag strap. Store the cow upright whenever possible so the body keeps its rounded shape.
