Crochet Tutorial: Sailor Cat – Free Crochet Pattern

This Sailor Cat crochet pattern creates a sweet cream-and-white cat doll wearing a navy sailor dress with white stripes, red necktie, anchor details, white shoes, blue bows, a tiny crossbody sailboat bag, and a matching sailor cap. The finished set also includes small seaside accessories: a goldfish, a white shell, and a round sailor hat with a red bow.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

The dress is worked separately and fitted around the body. It includes a dark navy skirt, white stripe bands, anchor motifs, a sailor collar, and a red tie. The bag, hat, shoes, fish, and shell are all made as separate pieces and sewn into place.

  • Skill level: Advanced beginner to intermediate

  • Construction: Amigurumi parts worked in continuous rounds, clothing worked in rows and rounds
  • Main texture: Tight single crochet stitches for a firm plush shape

  6. R29: Sc 3, dec, repeat 6 times. 24 sts.

  • FO with a long tail for sewing.
  • Do not close the opening completely.
  • Shape the cheeks gently with your fingers before final assembly.

Ears

The ears are triangular and sit at the upper sides of the head. The outer ear is cream and the inner ear is white. Each ear should be lightly stuffed only at the base so the tip remains soft and pointed.

Outer Ear, Make 2

  1. R1: With cream yarn, make MR, work 4 sc into ring. 4 sts.
  2. R2: Sc in each st around. 4 sts.
  3. R3: Sc 1, inc, repeat 2 times. 6 sts.

  10. R10: Sc in each st around. 16 sts.

Flatten the base of the ear. Do not overstuff. FO with a long tail. The ears should angle outward slightly, like the image, with the tips pointing upward and a little to the side.

Inner Ear Patch, Make 2

  1. R1: With white yarn, ch 5.

FO and sew one white patch onto the center of each cream ear. Keep the patch slightly lower than the tip so the cream edge remains visible around the ear.

Body

The body is smaller than the head and shaped like a soft pear. It starts at the neck, widens at the belly, and narrows slightly at the lower body. Use cream yarn because most of the body is covered by the sailor dress.

  1. R1: With cream yarn, make MR, work 6 sc into ring. 6 sts.
  2. R2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: Sc 1, inc, repeat 6 times. 18 sts.

Stuff the body firmly at the lower section and medium-firm at the neck. The neck should support the large head without wobbling. FO with a long tail if you prefer to sew from the body side.

Arms

The arms are cream at the top and white at the paws. The paws are rounded but not oversized. In the image, the arms hang downward along the dress, with the white paws visible below the short navy sleeves.

Make 2

  1. R1: With white yarn, make MR, work 6 sc into ring. 6 sts.
  2. R2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: Sc 1, inc, repeat 6 times. 18 sts.
  4. R4 to R6: Sc in each st around. 18 sts for 3 rounds.
  5. R7: Sc 1, dec, repeat 6 times. 12 sts.
  6. R8: Change to cream yarn. Sc in each st around. 12 sts.
  7. R9 to R18: Sc in each st around. 12 sts for 10 rounds.
  8. R19: Flatten the top and work 6 sc through both layers to close.

Stuff the paw firmly and the upper arm lightly. FO with a long tail. The arms should be flexible enough to lie close to the sides after the dress sleeves are added.

Legs

The legs are cream and straight, with enough length visible between the dress hem and shoes. Make both legs separately, then sew them under the body so the doll can sit or stand with support.

Make 2

  1. R1: With cream yarn, make MR, work 6 sc into ring. 6 sts.
  2. R2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: Sc 1, inc, repeat 6 times. 18 sts.
  4. R4 to R18: Sc in each st around. 18 sts for 15 rounds.
  5. R19: Sc 1, dec, repeat 6 times. 12 sts.
  6. R20: Sc in each st around. 12 sts.

Stuff the legs firmly but do not stretch the stitches. FO with a long tail. Sew the legs to the lower body with about 4 stitches between them. The feet will be added over the leg ends later.

White Shoes with Navy Soles

The shoes are rounded Mary Jane style, white with dark navy soles and a small blue bow at the outer side. They should look larger than the legs and create the cute doll-like balance shown in the image.

Shoe Base, Make 2

  1. R1: With navy yarn, ch 8.
  2. R2: Sc in second ch from hook, sc 5, 3 sc in last ch. Work along opposite side: sc 5, inc in last st. 16 sts.

  8. R9: Sc 7, dec 4 times, sc 7. 18 sts.
  9. R10: Sc in each st around. 18 sts.

Insert the leg into the shoe opening before final sewing. Lightly stuff the toe area. Sew the shoe around the ankle so it stays firmly in place.

Shoe Strap, Make 2

  1. With white yarn, ch 10.
  2. Sc in second ch from hook and across. 9 sc.
  3. FO, leaving a long tail.

Sew the strap across the top of each shoe. Place it slightly above the rounded toe. Secure both ends at the sides of the shoe.

Blue Shoe Bow, Make 2

  1. With blue yarn, ch 5.
  2. In second ch from hook, sc 4. Ch 1, turn.
  3. Sc 4. FO and wrap the center tightly with yarn 3 times.

Sew one small blue bow to the outer side of each shoe strap. Keep the bow small so it matches the neat detail seen in the picture.

Sailor Dress Base

The dress is the main feature of the doll. It has a fitted navy bodice, a full skirt, white horizontal stripes, white lower skirt panels, navy anchors, and a wide sailor collar. Crochet the dress separately so it can be placed over the body before final sewing.

Bodice

Use navy yarn. Work in rows first, then join for the waist. The back can be sewn closed after fitting around the body.

  1. R1: Ch 31, sc in second ch from hook and across. 30 sc.
  2. R2: Ch 1, turn. Sc 4, inc, sc 20, inc, sc 4. 32 sts.
  3. R3: Ch 1, turn. Sc across. 32 sts.

  9. R9: Change to navy yarn. Ch 1, turn. Sc across. 34 sts.
  10. R10: Ch 1, turn. Sc across. 34 sts.

Wrap the bodice around the body. The opening should be at the back. Join the bottom edge into a ring by slip stitching the first and last stitch edges together, or sew the back after the dress is on the doll.

Short Navy Sleeves

The sleeves are small and sit over the upper arms. Make them directly onto the armhole edges of the bodice or as separate bands.

  1. Join navy yarn at one armhole edge.
  2. R1: Work 14 sc evenly around the armhole. Join with sl st. 14 sts.
  3. R2: Ch 1, sc around. Join. 14 sts.
  4. R3: Change to white yarn, sc around. Join. 14 sts.
  5. R4: Change to navy yarn, sc around. Join. 14 sts.

Repeat for the second sleeve. The arms should slide through neatly, with the cream upper arm and white paw visible below the sleeve.

Flared Skirt

The skirt begins at the bodice waist and flares outward. The skirt in the image is navy with bold white stripes and a wide lower white band decorated with navy anchors. Work the skirt in joined rounds.

  1. R1: Join navy yarn to lower edge of bodice. Ch 1, work 34 sc evenly around. Join with sl st. 34 sts.

  17. R19: Navy yarn, reverse sc around for a corded edge, or sc around if preferred. FO.

The white band between R13 and R15 is where the anchor motifs will be embroidered. Keep the skirt evenly flared. Do not over-tighten the color changes, because the hem should curve gently outward.

Anchor Motifs on Skirt

The anchors are embroidered with navy yarn onto the white lower band. In the image, several navy anchors repeat around the front of the skirt. Place three anchors clearly across the front and one partial anchor toward each side if desired.

For Each Anchor

  1. Thread a yarn needle with navy yarn.
  2. Make one vertical stitch across 2 skirt rounds.
  3. Add a small horizontal stitch at the top of the vertical line.
  4. Add a short loop or tiny stitched circle above the top bar.
  5. Make a curved lower anchor line using 3 small diagonal stitches on each side.
  6. Add one tiny upward stitch at each end of the curve to create the anchor hooks.

Keep each anchor about 5 stitches wide and 3 rounds tall. Space anchors about 7 to 8 stitches apart across the front white band.

Sailor Collar

The collar is wide, white, and folded over the shoulders like a sailor uniform. It has red edging and a navy underside detail. The front points frame the red necktie.

Collar Base

  1. With white yarn, ch 37.
  2. R1: Sc in second ch from hook and across. 36 sc.
  3. R2: Ch 1, turn. Sc 4, hdc 6, dc 16, hdc 6, sc 4. 36 sts.

FO white. Join red yarn at one front point and work a fine edging around the collar.

Red Collar Edging

  1. Join red yarn at the left front point.
  2. Work 1 sc evenly around the outer collar edge, placing 2 sc at each front point.
  3. When you reach the other front point, FO and weave in ends.

Navy Lower Collar Line

  1. Join navy yarn one row above the lower collar edge.
  2. Surface slip stitch across the back and toward both front edges.
  3. Keep the navy line thin and even.

Sew the collar around the neckline after the dress is on the cat. Let the collar sit open at the front so the red tie hangs over the bodice.

Red Sailor Tie

The tie is bright red and hangs down at the center front. It has a small knot and two short tapered tails.

Tie Knot

  1. With red yarn, ch 5.
  2. Sc in second ch from hook and across. 4 sc.
  3. Ch 1, turn. Sc across. 4 sc.
  4. FO, leaving a tail for wrapping.

  2. Sc in second ch from hook, hdc 3, sc 1, sl st 1. 6 sts.
  3. FO with a sewing tail.

Sew both tie tails under the knot so they point downward in a soft V shape. Attach the knot just below the cat’s chin at the center of the collar.

Crossbody Strap

The strap is light blue and crosses from the cat’s right shoulder down to the left hip, holding the small square bag. It should lie over the dress and under the collar edge if possible.

  1. With light blue yarn, ch 58.
  2. Sc in second ch from hook and across. 57 sc.
  3. FO with a long tail.

Pin the strap diagonally across the body before sewing. Adjust the length so the bag rests at the lower right side of the skirt, as shown in the image. Sew the strap at the shoulder and near the bag only, leaving the middle slightly raised.

Light Blue Sailboat Bag

The bag is a small rectangular pouch with a rounded lower edge. It is light blue and decorated with a tiny sailboat. The bag should sit on top of the navy skirt, slightly to one side.

Bag Front

  1. With light blue yarn, ch 12.
  2. R1: Sc in second ch from hook and across. 11 sc.
  3. R2 to R8: Ch 1, turn. Sc across. 11 sc for 7 rows.

  6. FO.

Bag Back

  1. Repeat the same instructions as Bag Front.
  2. Do not add the sailboat to the back piece.

Joining the Bag

  1. Place front and back pieces together with wrong sides facing.
  2. Join light blue yarn at the upper right corner.
  3. Sc down the side, around the curved bottom, and up the other side.
  4. Place 2 sc at each bottom corner to keep the shape rounded.
  5. Leave the top edge open or sew it closed for a firm decorative bag.

Sailboat Applique

  • Boat base: With tan yarn, ch 6, sc in second ch from hook, sc 3, 3 sc in last ch, work back along opposite side with sc 4. FO and sew to lower center of bag.
  • White sail: With white yarn, ch 5, sc in second ch, hdc 1, dc 1, sl st 1. FO and sew above boat base.
  • Red flag: With red yarn, make 2 small straight stitches at the top of the sail.
  • Mast: With tan or navy yarn, embroider one straight vertical stitch between the sail and boat.

Sew the bag to the end of the strap. The top of the bag should tilt slightly, matching the relaxed handmade look of the pictured doll.

Sailor Hat for Cat Head

The cat wears a tiny white sailor patch or mini cap accent near one ear, decorated with a navy anchor. This head accessory is small, round, and sits on the upper side of the head.

Small White Head Patch

  1. With white yarn, make MR, work 6 sc into ring. 6 sts.
  2. R2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: Sc 1, inc, repeat 6 times. 18 sts.
  4. R4: Sc 2, inc, repeat 6 times. 24 sts.
  5. FO with a long tail.

Flatten the circle and sew it near the cat’s upper right ear. It should partly overlap the ear base, just like the tiny sailor decoration in the image.

Anchor on Head Patch

  1. Use navy embroidery thread or thin navy yarn.
  2. Stitch one vertical line down the center of the white circle.
  3. Add a tiny loop at the top with two short curved stitches.
  4. Add a horizontal bar under the loop.
  5. Make a curved anchor base at the bottom with two short diagonal stitches on each side.

Add a tiny red stitch or white stitch highlight if desired, but keep the anchor mostly navy so it remains clear.

Orange Tabby Stripes

The pictured cat has rust-orange stripes on the forehead and on both sides of the head. These are raised-looking, short curved crochet or embroidered details. Use rust-orange yarn and keep each stripe thick enough to show clearly.

Forehead Stripes, Make 3

  1. With rust-orange yarn, ch 9.
  2. Sc in second ch from hook and across. 8 sc.
  3. FO, leaving a long tail.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Sew the three stripes vertically over the top front of the head. Curve them slightly by tacking the ends lower than the center. The middle stripe should be centered; the side stripes should angle outward.

Side Cheek Stripes

  1. With rust-orange yarn, make 3 short embroidered lines on each side of the head.
  2. Each line should be about 3 stitches long.
  3. Place them between the eye level and ear base.
  4. Angle the lines slightly backward.

Do not make the stripes too low on the white muzzle area. They should sit mostly on the cream side head, matching the image.

Face Details

The face is simple and sweet. The eyes are large and glossy. The nose is tiny, centered low between the eyes. The mouth has a short vertical line and a soft little curve.

  1. Thread black embroidery floss onto a needle.
  2. Make a small V-shaped nose between R21 and R22 of the head, centered between the eyes.
  3. Stitch one short vertical line downward from the nose.
  4. Add a tiny curved mouth line to each side if desired, but keep it subtle.
  5. Make one small black lash or whisker mark near each outer eye if you want the sleepy stitched detail visible in the photo.

For extra shine, add a small white stitch to the upper outer side of each eye, or rely on glossy safety eyes for the reflective look.

Large Round Sailor Hat Accessory

The image includes a separate round sailor hat placed beside the cat. It is white on top, navy and red around the band, and finished with a red bow. This accessory can be used as a display prop.

  5. Wrap the center tightly 6 times to create a bow shape.
  6. Make two short tails by chaining 8 twice and fastening them under the bow center.

Sew the red bow to one side of the hat band. The bow should look bright and slightly oversized compared with the hat, like the accessory shown on the table.

Small Goldfish Accessory

The small fish is orange, rounded, and simple. It has a tiny black eye and a fan tail. Use firm stuffing so the fish keeps its oval shape.

Fish Body

Embroider one black eye on each side of the fish between R3 and R4. Add a tiny white dot with embroidery thread if desired.

White Shell Accessory

The shell is white or cream and shaped like a small fan. It has raised ridges made with slip stitches or embroidered lines. It sits beside the fish and sailor hat in the finished display.

Shell Base

  1. With white yarn, make MR, work 6 sc into ring. Do not close too tightly. 6 sts.
  2. R2: Ch 1, turn. Inc in each st across. 12 sts.

Fold the straight lower edge slightly inward. FO with a long tail. Use the tail to gather the bottom edge so the shell fans outward.

Shell Ridges

  1. Thread white yarn onto a needle.
  2. Make 5 raised straight stitches from the gathered base to the rounded outer edge.
  3. Space the ridge lines evenly across the shell.
  4. Pull lightly so the shell curves.

Do not overstuff the shell. It should lie flat with a gentle curve and visible ridges.

Joining the Cat

Before sewing the clothing permanently, assemble the body parts. Pin everything first. The large head should sit centered over the narrow body. The ears should be symmetrical, and the legs should be aligned under the skirt.

  1. Sew the head to the body using the 24-stitch opening of the head and the top of the body.
  2. Go around the neck twice with firm stitches so the head does not wobble.
  3. Sew the ears between R6 and R14 of the head, one on each side.
  4. Angle each ear slightly outward and forward.
  5. Sew the arms to the upper body between R18 and R20 of the body.
  6. Sew the legs to the lower body with the toes pointing forward.
  7. Slide the dress onto the body before fully securing the arms if needed.

After the body is assembled, place the dress around the cat. Adjust the skirt so the anchors sit at the front. Sew the back seam of the bodice neatly with navy yarn.

Attaching the Dress and Details

The dress should fit snugly at the bodice and flare at the skirt. Use small invisible stitches to secure the neckline, waist, and back opening. Do not sew the entire skirt to the body, because it should remain slightly loose and full.

  • Sew the bodice back seam from neck to waist.
  • Tack the waistline to the body at the front, back, and both sides.
  • Place the collar over the neckline and sew around the back neck first.
  • Let the front collar points overlap the bodice slightly.
  • Sew the red tie at the center front, directly below the chin.
  • Attach the strap diagonally over the dress.
  • Sew the bag at the lower side of the skirt.

Check that the arms hang naturally over the sides of the dress. The white paws should be visible and should not disappear under the sleeves.

Optional White Cuffs on Paws

If you want the paws to look extra clean like the image, add a tiny white cuff line at the wrist area where white changes to cream.

  1. Join white yarn around the color-change line at the paw.
  2. Surface slip stitch around the wrist.
  3. FO and hide the yarn ends inside the arm.

This creates a neat separation and makes the paws look rounder.

Detailed Placement Measurements

Use these measurements as a guide if your finished doll is close to 11 or 12 inches tall. If your yarn creates a different size, use the stitch rows instead of inches.

  • Eyes: Between head R18 and R19, about 11 stitches apart
  • Nose: Centered between eyes, about 3 rounds below eye line
  • Ears: Sew from head R7 to R15, angled outward
  • Forehead stripes: Start near R6 and end near R12
  • Side stripes: Place between R15 and R18 on cream side areas
  • Collar: Around neck seam, sitting on top of bodice
  • Bag: Lower front side of skirt, over navy section
  • Hat patch: Upper side of head near one ear

Making the Doll Look Like the Picture

The most important feature is proportion. The head should be large and round, the body smaller, and the skirt full. The shoes should be slightly oversized, and the accessories should be crisp but not too large.

Use tight crochet stitches and firm stuffing for the head. If the head becomes too tall, gently press the top down while shaping. If the face looks narrow, add more stuffing to the cheek area before closing the head seam.

The white face panel should be broad and soft. It should start around the eye level and continue down to the chin area. Keep the color changes clean by carrying the unused yarn loosely inside the work.

The sailor dress should have strong contrast. Navy and white stripes are essential. Red details should be small but bright. The light blue bag should stand out against the dark skirt.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Pin all parts before sewing permanently. Make sure the head faces forward, the ears are even, and the white muzzle is centered. Sew slowly using matching yarn for each section.

  • Secure the head with two full rounds of stitching around the neck.
  • Shape the cheeks by gently pressing outward under each eye.
  • Check that the eyes are level before finishing embroidery.
  • Keep the nose tiny and neat, using only a few black stitches.
  • Add the mouth line last so it stays centered.
  • Attach the collar and tie after the dress is already fitted.
  • Sew the bag strap lightly so it keeps a natural diagonal line.

When all pieces are attached, lightly steam only the clothing pieces if needed. Do not press the face, head, or stuffed body directly.

Care Notes

This Sailor Cat is best used as a decorative handmade doll. Because it has small parts, embroidered details, a bag, and accessories, it should not be given to very young children without safety adjustments.

  • Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if safety eyes, stiff accessories, or glued details are used.
  • Let the doll air dry completely before storage.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight for long periods to protect the navy, red, and orange colors.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is round, firm, and larger than the body.
  • The white face panel is centered under both eyes.
  • The ears are pointed and angled outward.
  • The rust-orange tabby stripes are visible on the forehead and sides.
  • The sailor dress has navy, white, and red details.
  • The skirt has anchor motifs across the white band.
  • The red tie is centered below the chin.
  • The blue bag crosses the body on a diagonal strap.
  • The shoes are white with navy soles and blue bows.
  • The sailor hat, fish, and shell are finished as matching display accessories.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, store the doll upright or lying flat in a clean cotton bag. Avoid compressing the head or skirt under heavy objects. If dust collects on the surface, use a soft brush and gentle strokes.

For deeper cleaning, lightly dampen a white cloth with cool water and a tiny amount of mild soap. Pat the stained area instead of rubbing. Rinse with another damp cloth and let the piece air dry naturally.

Do not soak the doll, especially if the bag, collar, and anchors are sewn on separately. Water can shift stuffing and flatten the dress shape. Keep the accessories together in a small pouch when not displayed.

Once dry, reshape the ears, skirt hem, bow, and bag strap with your fingers. This keeps the Sailor Cat looking bright, neat, and close to the original handmade seaside design.
