Knitting Tutorial: Red Fox in Floral Dress – Free Knitting Pattern

This sweet knitted red fox is dressed for a woodland garden day, with a round fox head, white muzzle, pointed ears, red legs, yellow shoes, a blue-and-cream floral dress, an olive cable cardigan, a tiny crossbody mushroom bag, and small forest accessories. The finished toy is soft, detailed, and designed as a seated amigurumi-style knit with many charming embroidered accents.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern creates a seated red fox doll with a large rounded head, slim body, long dangling legs, short arms, pointed ears, a fluffy tail, knitted dress, cardigan, shoes, bag, and woodland decorations. The instructions use small-circumference knitting, increases, decreases, color changes, embroidery, and careful seaming.

The fox body is worked firmly so it holds its shape. The face uses color shaping for the red upper head and white lower muzzle area. The dress is worked separately and fitted over the body. The cardigan is knitted flat with cable panels and added embroidered fox motifs near the lower fronts.

  • Finished size: about 13 inches tall from shoe sole to top of ear, not counting the acorn and mushroom headpieces.
  • Skill level: adventurous beginner to intermediate.
  • Knitting style: small toy knitting in the round and flat pieces.
  • Main techniques: knit, purl, kfb, k2tog, ssk, short seams, simple cables, duplicate stitch, embroidery, and stuffing.

Materials

  • DK weight yarn in fox red, about 90 yd.
  • DK weight yarn in warm white, about 45 yd.
  • DK weight yarn in olive green, about 75 yd.
  • DK weight yarn in cream, about 45 yd.
  • DK weight yarn in soft blue, about 25 yd.
  • DK weight yarn in mustard yellow, about 25 yd.
  • Small amounts of brown, tan, red, pale green, dark green, black, and mushroom white.
  • US 2 needles, 2.75 mm, for the toy body.
  • US 3 needles, 3.25 mm, for the dress and cardigan if you want easier dressing.
  • Set of double-pointed needles or magic-loop circular needle.
  • Two 7 mm black safety eyes or black beads.
  • One 8 mm black safety nose or black embroidery yarn.
  • Four tiny wooden-style buttons, about 6 mm wide, for the cardigan.
  • One tiny button for the bag flap.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Embroidery needle.
  • Two stitch markers.
  • Small cable needle.
  • Optional: pipe cleaner for the tail only, if you want a slightly posed tail.

Gauge and Fabric

For the stuffed fox, knit tightly enough that stuffing does not show through. A useful toy gauge is about 7 stitches and 10 rounds per inch in stockinette on US 2 needles. The cardigan and dress may be slightly looser, about 6 stitches per inch, because they need to slide over the body.

  • Body fabric: firm stockinette.
  • Dress fabric: light stockinette with stranded or duplicate-stitch flowers.
  • Cardigan fabric: olive stockinette with ribbed edges and cable panels.
  • Shoes: firm garter and stockinette shaping.

Important Construction Notes

The fox is built from separate pieces for a clean amigurumi look. The head is large and round, the body is smaller and hidden under the dress, and the limbs are slim. The ears are pointed triangles with warm white inner-ear panels. The tail sits to one side behind the dress.

Use mattress stitch for visible seams. Stuff the head firmly, the body medium-firmly, and the limbs lightly. Overstuffed arms and legs can look bulky under the cardigan and dress, so add small bits of stuffing slowly and shape with your fingers as you go.

  • Keep all color changes neat by twisting yarns on the wrong side.
  • When embroidering flowers, keep floats short so the dress remains soft.
  • Attach the cardigan after the dress so it sits open in front like the photo.
  • Place the crossbody bag strap after the cardigan buttons are sewn on.

Head

The head is worked in the round from the top down. It has a red upper fox face and a warm white lower muzzle. The white cheek area rises slightly on both sides to make the fox expression soft and friendly.

Muzzle Shaping and Face Embroidery

The fox face needs gentle sculpting to match the picture. Use a long strand of warm white yarn to pull the lower face inward slightly under the nose. This creates a small smile and makes the cheeks puff outward.

  1. Thread warm white yarn through a tapestry needle.
  2. Enter at the lower back of the head and exit below the nose.
  3. Take one small stitch downward over 2 knitted rows.
  4. Pull gently to indent the center muzzle.
  5. Repeat once on the left cheek and once on the right cheek, each time pulling softly.
  6. With black embroidery yarn, stitch a small curved smile from the nose down 2 rows and outward 3 stitches on each side.
  7. Add one tiny white highlight stitch on each eye, if desired.

Ears

The ears are triangular and sit high on the head. Each ear has a fox red outer ear and a warm white inner panel. The tips are slightly darker, echoing the soft dark edging visible in the image.

Blue Flower Pattern on Skirt

The dress in the image has scattered blue flowers in a simple repeating pattern. Use duplicate stitch after knitting the skirt. This gives more control and keeps the small dress neat.

  • Large flower repeat: 5 stitches wide and 5 rows tall.
  • Center: one small yellow stitch in the middle.
  • Petals: blue duplicate stitches above, below, left, and right of the center.
  • Spacing: place one flower every 8 stitches across the skirt and every 7 rows vertically.
  1. Start the first row of flowers 4 rows above the hem.
  2. Place flowers at stitch positions 5, 13, 21, 29, 37, 45, 53, and 61.
  3. Place the second flower row 7 rows above the first row.
  4. Offset the second row by 4 stitches so the flowers look scattered.
  5. Add small dark green V stitches between some flowers for leaves.
  6. Keep embroidery light so the skirt remains soft and drapes slightly.

Side Woodland Mushrooms

The image includes small loose mushrooms beside the fox. Make three small mushrooms if you want the full scene: one larger red mushroom and two shorter mushrooms. These are separate props and do not need to be attached to the doll.

For the top nub, CO 6 sts with olive green, knit 4 rounds, and draw closed. Sew it to the center top. Embroider two tiny acorns with tan and brown yarn, then add red-orange and dark green leaf stitches around them.

Assembly Order

  1. Sew the head to the body with the white muzzle centered over the front body.
  2. Attach the legs to the lower body and check that they hang evenly.
  3. Sew the shoes onto the feet and add shoe straps and flowers.
  4. Place the dress on the body before attaching the arms permanently.
  5. Sew the back lower dress seam closed, leaving the top open.
  6. Attach the arms at the shoulders so the red paws show below the sleeves.
  7. Dress the fox in the cardigan and close shoulder/sleeve seams neatly.
  8. Attach the cardigan with small hidden stitches at the shoulders and side seams.
  9. Sew on the buttons and embroidered cardigan fox motifs.
  10. Attach the tail behind the dress at a slight side angle.
  11. Sew the ears to the head, tilting them slightly outward.
  12. Add the acorn, mushroom, and leaves to the top of the head.
  13. Place the crossbody bag strap over the cardigan and tack it lightly.

Detailed Placement Guide

The head should look oversized compared with the body, which gives the fox its gentle handmade character. The ears sit between Rnds 9 and 18 of the head, about 10 stitches apart across the crown. The inner white panels should face forward.

The cardigan should remain open in the front so the floral dress is visible. The lower cardigan edge should stop slightly above the widest part of the skirt. Do not pull the cardigan tightly closed; the pictured style is relaxed and layered.

  • Eyes: place between head Rnds 23 and 24, 12 stitches apart.
  • Nose: center on the white muzzle between Rnds 28 and 30.
  • Ears: sew from Rnds 10-18, angled slightly outward.
  • Arms: attach under the head seam at each body side.
  • Tail: attach behind the right side of the skirt waist.
  • Bag: hang from left shoulder to right hip.

Embroidery Details

Embroidery gives this fox its storybook look. Work slowly and use short strands. Secure yarn ends inside the toy or inside garment seams. Avoid long floats that may snag during play or display.

  • Add a black curved smile under the nose.
  • Add white highlights to the eyes with one tiny stitch each.
  • Use blue duplicate stitch flowers on the cream dress.
  • Add yellow flower centers with single vertical stitches.
  • Add dark green tiny leaf stitches between some flowers.
  • Add red mushroom caps and grass to the bag front.
  • Add tiny fox motifs near both lower cardigan fronts.

Finishing the Dress Fit

The skirt should flare gently around the body. If your skirt is too flat, steam it very lightly by holding it near steam, not touching the iron to the fabric. Shape the hem outward with your fingers and let it dry fully.

If the dress is too loose at the bodice, sew two small hidden stitches at the back neckline after dressing the fox. If it is too snug, leave the back seam open higher and let the cardigan cover the gap.

Finishing the Cardigan Texture

The cable panels should be visible but not bulky. After sewing the cardigan, use your fingers to lift and straighten each cable column. Do not over-block the cardigan because the soft, slightly rustic texture matches the woodland style.

  • Keep the front edges slightly curved open.
  • Place buttons only on one front edge for the photographed look.
  • Use thread or matching yarn to attach buttons securely.
  • Hide all knots on the inside of the cardigan.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the face before securing every thread. The fox should have a calm, friendly expression, with the eyes level, the nose centered, and the smile small. Gently pinch the muzzle while tightening the sculpting yarn so the white cheeks look rounded.

  • Brush away loose fibers with your fingers, not a harsh brush.
  • Make sure the head decorations are centered between the ears.
  • Confirm the tail is visible from the side and not hidden fully under the skirt.
  • Trim embroidery tails only after all details are secure.

Care Notes

This knitted fox is best used as a decorative handmade toy. Because it includes small buttons, stitched decorations, and optional safety eyes, it is not recommended for children under three years old unless all small parts are replaced with secure embroidery.

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if the toy includes buttons or firm decorations.
  • Reshape the head, dress, and tail while damp.
  • Let the fox air dry flat on a clean towel.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is firmly stuffed and smoothly rounded.
  • The white muzzle is centered and softly sculpted.
  • The ears are even and angled outward.
  • The floral dress shows blue flowers across the front.
  • The olive cardigan sits open and has visible cable texture.
  • The red paws show below the sleeves.
  • The yellow shoes have red straps and pale green flowers.
  • The crossbody bag rests at the hip and has a mushroom motif.
  • The acorn and mushroom headpieces are secure.
  • The tail peeks from behind the dress.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the fox away from direct sunlight to protect the red, blue, and olive yarn colors. If displaying it on a shelf, place it upright with support behind the back so the legs can hang naturally without stretching.

For long-term storage, wrap the fox in acid-free tissue or clean cotton fabric. Do not seal it in plastic if there is any moisture present. Add a cedar block nearby if you normally protect wool items from moths.

  • Freshen the toy by airing it in a shaded spot for one hour.
  • Remove dust with a lint roller used very gently.
  • Keep the tiny mushrooms and beret prop in a small cloth bag when not displayed.
  • Check buttons and embroidery every few months if the fox is handled often.

Your red fox in a floral dress is complete. The finished piece should look like a cozy woodland character with a round fox face, pointed ears, layered outfit, small forest bag, yellow shoes, and charming mushroom-and-acorn details.
