Skill Level

Intermediate beginner to intermediate. The main body uses basic amigurumi shaping, color changes, simple embroidery, and sewing. The overalls and accessories are detailed, but each part is built with small, clear rounds and rows so the project stays manageable.

Materials

  • Sport weight cotton yarn in light gray for the elephant.
  • Sport weight cotton yarn in sky blue for the overalls, straps, sandals, and beanie.
  • Sport weight cotton yarn in red for shirt stripes, party hat, and watermelon flesh.
  • Sport weight cotton yarn in white for shirt stripes, hat trim, flowers, sandal toe details, and clouds.

  • Tapestry needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Pins for positioning parts.
  • Scissors.

Abbreviations Used

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • inc: 2 single crochet in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • st: stitch
  • sts: stitches
  • R: round or row
  • FO: fasten off

Gauge Notes

Gauge is not critical, but your stitches should be tight enough that stuffing does not show. With sport weight cotton and a 2.25 mm hook, 8 sc across should measure about 1 in / 2.5 cm. If your stitches look open, use a smaller hook.

The elephant in the image has firm, even stitches with a compact amigurumi texture. Stuff each piece gradually. The head and body should feel full but not stretched. The ears should stay slightly soft so they curve naturally like shallow bowls.

Important Construction Notes

  • Work most pieces in continuous rounds unless a section says to join.
  • Use a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round.
  • Stuff the head, body, legs, arms, and trunk firmly.
  • Do not stuff the ears; they need to stay flexible.
  • Color changes for the striped shirt are made every 2 rounds.
  • The overalls are crocheted as separate lower pants, front bib, back bib, cuffs, straps, and pocket accents.
  • Sew parts slowly and symmetrically. The charm of this doll depends on careful placement.

Ear Edging

Join light gray yarn near the lower folded edge. Ch 1, work sc evenly around the outer curve of the ear, placing 2 sc in every third stitch to make a soft raised rim. Sl st to finish and weave in the end. Repeat for the second ear.

Body Base

The body is mostly hidden by the striped shirt and blue overalls, but it must be firm and pear-shaped. Use light gray yarn for the lower body foundation. The shirt and overalls will be worked separately and sewn over this base.

Right Overall Leg

Repeat the same instructions as the left overall leg. Make sure both cuffs end at the same height above the elephant’s feet.

Overall Cuff Edging

Join sky blue yarn to the front loop left from R7 of one pant leg. Ch 1, sc around in the exposed front loops. Join and FO. Repeat for the second leg. This gives the cuff a raised border.

Front Bib

Watermelon Seeds

Use black thread to embroider 5 tiny seed stitches on the red triangle. Place 2 seeds near the upper middle, 2 near the lower sides, and 1 near the center.

Optional Blue Hair Tufts

The image shows tiny blue yarn accents near the top sides of the head. To make them, cut two 3 in / 7.5 cm strands of blue yarn. Pull each strand halfway through one stitch near the ear base, knot it, and trim to about 0.4 in / 1 cm.

Assembly Order

  1. Slide the striped shirt onto the gray body. Align the armholes at the sides.
  2. Pull the blue overall pants over the lower body and sew the upper edge lightly to the body to prevent shifting.
  3. Sew the front bib to the center front, then attach the back bib.
  4. Sew the shoulder straps from back to front, crossing over the shoulders naturally.
  5. Sew the two tiny buttons to the front bib where the straps meet.
  6. Sew the legs under the body so the feet angle outward slightly.
  7. Sew the arms through the shirt armholes, placing them just below the shoulder line.
  8. Sew the head to the body using the 18-stitch neck area. Add extra stuffing between head and body before closing the seam.
  9. Sew the trunk to the lower center face, beginning between R15 and R16 of the head and ending around R21.
  10. Sew the ears to the sides of the head between R10 and R19. Angle them outward and slightly upward.
  11. Attach the party hat, flowers, leaves, bag, sandals, and embroidered details.

Facial Features

The face is simple and gentle. The eyes should sit wide apart above the trunk. If using embroidered eyes, make each eye with 4 horizontal black stitches over 2 rounds, then add one tiny white stitch at the upper outer corner.

  • Place eyes between R14 and R15 with 8 stitches between them.
  • Sew the trunk centered below the eyes, with the top edge touching R16-R17.
  • Use black thread to make one tiny curved stitch under each eye if you want a softer expression.
  • Do not add a large mouth; the trunk is the main facial feature.

How to Shape the Elephant Correctly

After all parts are sewn, gently press the head into a rounded oval. Shape the cheeks outward with your thumbs. The ears should not lie flat; curve each one forward slightly so the inner hollow is visible.

The trunk should point downward and slightly forward. To secure the curve, stitch the upper back of the trunk to the face firmly, then add one hidden tack stitch about halfway down the trunk to encourage the gentle bend.

The overalls should look roomy, not tight. The bib sits on top of the striped shirt, and the straps should be straight but relaxed. The round bag hangs diagonally and rests just below the bib on the elephant’s right side.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  • Check that both ears are level before sewing them completely.
  • Use pins to test the trunk position from the front and side.
  • Add the head flowers only after the ears and hat are attached.
  • Sew the crossbody bag strap to the shoulder area with 2 hidden stitches so it does not slide.
  • Add small embroidered stitches last, after the overalls are fully secured.

For a polished finish, weave every yarn tail through the inside of the doll instead of trimming close to the surface. Smooth the stuffing by rolling the body gently between your palms. Adjust the sandals so the flowers face outward.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if wooden buttons or safety eyes are used.
  • Press gently in a towel to remove extra water.
  • Air dry flat away from direct sunlight.
  • Reshape the ears, trunk, hat, and accessories while damp.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Head is firmly stuffed and sewn straight to the body.
  • Trunk is centered and curves downward.
  • Ears are wide, rounded, and evenly placed.
  • Striped shirt shows clearly above the overalls.
  • Blue overall straps have two small buttons at the front.
  • Sandals include cream soles, blue straps, toe bumps, and yellow flowers.
  • Round bag has a white cloud applique and diagonal strap.
  • Party hat has white trim and a white pom-pom.
  • Beanie, basket, and watermelon slice are finished as matching accessories.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Keep the elephant in a dry place when not in use. Cotton yarn can absorb moisture, so avoid storing the doll in sealed plastic if the climate is humid. A breathable cotton bag or open display shelf is best.

To remove dust, use a soft dry brush and move gently in the direction of the crochet stitches. For small stains, dab with a damp cloth instead of rubbing. Rubbing may fuzz the yarn surface and flatten the embroidered details.

If the doll becomes misshapen, hold the area gently between your palms and reshape it with light pressure. The ears, trunk, hat, and beanie respond well to hand shaping. Let the piece rest flat after reshaping.

For long-term display, keep the doll away from strong sunlight to protect the red, blue, and yellow colors. Check the sewn buttons, flowers, and small accessories occasionally, especially if the doll is handled often.
