Crochet Tutorial: Monkey Amigurumi in Sunflower Overalls – Free Crochet Pattern

This cheerful crochet monkey amigurumi is dressed in bright orange sunflower overalls with tiny shoulder buttons, embroidered green leaves, cream hands and feet, round ears, a long curved tail, orange sandals, and a sweet sunflower hair accessory. The set also includes forest-style props: small mushrooms, a green beret-like cushion with an acorn, loose leaves, and a tiny acorn bag with a green strap.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US crochet terms and is designed to create a soft, rounded monkey doll with the same gentle woodland look shown in the image. The monkey has a large cream face framed by brown head fur, a compact body hidden inside puffed sunflower overalls, slim brown arms, cream mitt-style hands, short legs, and oversized sandal feet.

The overall shape is worked mainly in continuous spiral rounds. The overalls are made separately and fitted over the body so the orange fabric sits slightly bulky around the hips and thighs. Sunflower appliqués are sewn across the bib and pants, while small embroidered leaves decorate the chest.

For best results, keep your tension firm but not stiff. Amigurumi should be crocheted tightly enough that stuffing does not show through the stitches. Use stitch markers at the beginning of every round, especially for the head, face, overalls, and feet.

Finished Size

  • Monkey height: approximately 9.5 inches from bottom of sandals to top of head.
  • Head width: approximately 4.25 inches across, not including ears.
  • Body height: approximately 4 inches from neck to lower hips.
  • Arm length: approximately 3.25 inches each.
  • Tail length: approximately 4 inches, gently curved.
  • Overalls: short and rounded, ending above the cream ankles.
  • Props: mushrooms about 1.25 to 2 inches tall, green cushion about 2.75 inches wide, acorn bag about 2.25 inches tall.

Materials

  • Sport weight or light DK cotton yarn in warm brown for monkey fur.
  • Sport weight or light DK cotton yarn in cream for face, inner ears, hands, ankles, and toes.
  • Sport weight or light DK cotton yarn in orange for overalls and sandals.

Gauge and Tension

Gauge is not critical, but matching the stitch density is important. With a 2.25 mm hook and light DK cotton, 7 sc across and 7 rounds high should measure about 1 inch. The stitches in the image are compact, even, and slightly textured, so avoid loose tension.

If your stitches show stuffing, go down a hook size. If your fabric feels hard and difficult to sew, go up slightly. The head should feel firm and rounded, while the overalls may be stuffed more softly around the pants area for a puffy look.

Color Placement Guide

  • Brown: top of head, head frame, back of head, ears outer edge, arms, upper legs, tail, and neck area.
  • Cream: large face panel, muzzle area, inner ears, hands, lower legs, front foot ovals.
  • Orange: overalls, shoulder straps, pant cuffs, sandal straps, and sole trim.
  • Yellow: sunflower petals and hair flower.
  • Dark brown: sunflower centers, mushroom stems or details, acorn caps.
  • Green: embroidered leaves, tiny leaf on hair flower, sandal leaves, bag strap, and props.

Important Construction Notes

The monkey is made from separate amigurumi parts and sewn together. The head is worked as a full brown sphere with a cream face panel sewn onto the front. This method gives the face its clear scalloped cream shape beneath the brown hairline, matching the image more closely than frequent color changes.

The body is simple and compact because the orange overalls cover most of it. The overalls are made as two short pant legs joined into one piece, then shaped upward into a bib. The fit should be snug at the waist and rounded at the hips.

Use pins before sewing. The face should sit low enough that the forehead remains brown and rounded. The ears should be attached at the sides between the upper and middle head rounds, slightly tilted outward. The arms angle down naturally beside the body.

Head

Use warm brown yarn and the 2.25 mm hook. Work in continuous rounds. Stuff firmly as you go, especially around the cheeks and top of head.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc in each st around. 12 sts.

  16. R24: sc 2, dec; repeat 6 times. 18 sts.
  17. R25: sc 1, dec; repeat 6 times. 12 sts.

Add final stuffing until the head is smooth and round. Do not overstuff so much that the stitches stretch open. FO with a long tail. Weave through the front loops of the final 12 sts, pull closed, and secure.

Cream Face Panel

The face panel is an oval-heart shape with soft cheek curves. It is sewn onto the brown head, leaving a brown cap visible above the eyes. Use cream yarn and work in rounds around a foundation chain.

  1. Ch 11.
  2. R1: starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc 9, 3 sc in last ch. Continue on other side of chain, sc 8, inc in last ch. 22 sts.
  3. R2: inc, sc 8, inc in next 3 sts, sc 8, inc in next 2 sts. 28 sts.
  4. R3: sc 1, inc, sc 8, sc 1, inc, sc 1, inc, sc 1, inc, sc 8, sc 1, inc, sc 1, inc. 34 sts.
  5. R4: sc 2, inc, sc 9, hdc 1, inc hdc, hdc 1, inc hdc, hdc 1, inc hdc, sc 9, sc 2, inc, sc 2, inc. 42 sts.

FO with a long sewing tail. Pin the panel to the front of the head from approximately R9 down to R21. The upper edge should form two soft cream cheek peaks under the brown forehead, like the image. Sew with small whip stitches through the outer loops only.

Face Details

Place the safety eyes or black beads through the cream face panel before sewing it fully closed, or sew beads after the panel is attached. Position eyes about 7 sts apart, between the visual rows corresponding to R13 and R14 of the head.

  • Insert the left eye slightly lower than the upper cream curve.
  • Insert the right eye at the same height, leaving a gentle innocent expression.
  • Use black thread to embroider a small vertical nose line centered between the eyes, about 3 rounds below them.
  • Make a short horizontal stitch at the top of the nose line.
  • Work one tiny downward mouth stitch from the base of the nose.
  • Add two short eyelash stitches beside the outer side of each eye if desired.

To create the subtle cheek shape, thread cream yarn behind the head and gently pull from the lower outer corners of the face toward the center under the mouth. Secure inside the head if still open, or bury the thread carefully.

Outer Ears

Make two with brown yarn. The ears are round with a slight cup shape and should sit out from the head like small monkey ears.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: sc 1, inc; repeat 6 times. 18 sts.
  4. R4: sc 2, inc; repeat 6 times. 24 sts.
  5. R5: sc in each st around. 24 sts.
  6. R6: sc 2, dec; repeat 6 times. 18 sts.

FO with a long tail. Do not stuff heavily. Flatten slightly but keep the rim rounded.

Inner Ears

Make two with cream yarn. These smaller circles sit inside the brown ears.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: sc 1, inc; repeat 6 times. 18 sts.
  4. Sl st to finish.

FO with a long tail. Sew one cream circle into each brown ear, centered slightly toward the lower front. Use small stitches and keep the cream disc flat. Attach ears to the head between R10 and R17, one on each side. Angle them slightly forward.

Body

Use brown yarn. The body is pear-shaped but mostly hidden by the overalls. Stuff firmly at the neck and softly at the belly.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: sc 1, inc; repeat 6 times. 18 sts.

  7. R7 to R12: sc in each st around. 36 sts.
  8. R13: sc 4, dec; repeat 6 times. 30 sts.
  9. R14 to R15: sc in each st around. 30 sts.
  10. R16: sc 3, dec; repeat 6 times. 24 sts.
  11. R17: sc in each st around. 24 sts.
  12. R18: sc 2, dec; repeat 6 times. 18 sts.
  13. R19: sc in each st around. 18 sts.
  14. R20: sc 1, dec; repeat 6 times. 12 sts.

FO with a long tail for sewing. Sew the body under the head so the head sits slightly forward. The neck join should be stable because the head is larger than the body.

Arms

Make two. Begin with cream for the hands, then change to brown for the arms. The arms in the image are slim and hang outward at a gentle angle.

  1. With cream, R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: sc 1, inc; repeat 6 times. 18 sts.
  4. R4 to R5: sc in each st around. 18 sts.
  5. R6: sc 1, dec; repeat 6 times. 12 sts.
  6. Change to brown.
  7. R7: BLO sc in each st around. 12 sts.
  8. R8 to R18: sc in each st around. 12 sts for 11 rounds.
  9. R19: sc 4, dec; repeat 2 times. 10 sts.

Stuff the cream hand firmly and the brown arm lightly. Flatten the top opening and crochet through both layers with 5 sc to close. FO with a long tail. Sew arms to the upper body around R17 of the body, just below the head, angled downward.

Legs

Make two. Begin with cream for the lower legs and feet connection area, then add brown above the ankle. The legs are short because the overalls cover the thighs.

  1. With cream, R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3 to R7: sc in each st around. 12 sts.
  4. Change to brown.
  5. R8: BLO sc in each st around. 12 sts.
  6. R9 to R13: sc in each st around. 12 sts.

Stuff lightly. Flatten the top and close with 6 sc through both layers. FO, leaving a sewing tail. Sew the legs under the body about 6 sts apart, with the cream ankles showing below the orange overall cuffs.

Feet and Shoe Bases

Make two cream oval feet first. These create the rounded toes seen inside the orange sandals.

  1. With cream, ch 7.
  2. R1: starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc 5, 3 sc in last ch, continue on other side, sc 4, inc in last ch. 14 sts.
  3. R2: inc, sc 4, inc in next 3 sts, sc 4, inc in next 2 sts. 20 sts.
  4. R3: sc 1, inc, sc 4, sc 1, inc, sc 1, inc, sc 1, inc, sc 4, sc 1, inc, sc 1, inc. 26 sts.
  5. R4: BLO sc in each st around. 26 sts.
  6. R5 to R6: sc in each st around. 26 sts.
  7. R7: sc 6, dec 4 times, sc 8, dec 2 times. 20 sts.
  8. R8: sc 5, dec 3 times, sc 7, dec 1 time. 16 sts.

Stuff the foot lightly so the toe is rounded but not bulky. FO and sew closed if needed. Sew each foot to the bottom front of a leg, making sure the toes point forward.

Orange Sandals

The sandals have orange soles and a top strap. Make two sole trims and two top straps.

Sandal Sole Trim

  1. With orange, ch 8.
  2. R1: starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc 6, 3 sc in last ch, continue on other side, sc 5, inc in last ch. 16 sts.
  3. R2: inc, sc 5, inc in next 3 sts, sc 5, inc in next 2 sts. 22 sts.
  4. Sl st to finish.

FO with a long tail. Place the orange oval under the cream foot and sew around the edge so orange shows as a rim.

Sandal Top Strap

  1. With orange, ch 10.
  2. R1: starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc 9. 9 sts.
  3. R2: ch 1, turn, sc 9. 9 sts.

  1. Ch 5.
  2. Starting in 2nd ch from hook, sl st 1, sc 1, hdc 1, 3 sc in last ch.
  3. Work along the opposite side: hdc 1, sc 1, sl st 1.

FO and sew one leaf to each sandal strap. Place the leaves on the outside edges, matching the picture.

Tail

The tail is brown, narrow, and curved. Use a pipe cleaner if you want the same shaped curve shown in the image. If making this toy for a child under three, omit wire and use stuffing only.

  1. With brown, R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: sc 1, inc; repeat 3 times. 9 sts.
  3. R3 to R28: sc in each st around. 9 sts for 26 rounds.
  4. R29: sc 1, dec; repeat 3 times. 6 sts.

Stuff very lightly as you work, or insert a covered pipe cleaner folded safely at both ends. FO and close the tip. Sew the tail to the back lower body, letting it curve down and outward beside the right leg.

Sunflower Overalls

The orange overalls are the main clothing feature. They have short puffed legs, a rounded belly, front bib, thin shoulder straps, and small buttons at the strap bases. Use orange yarn and the 2.25 mm hook.

First Overall Leg

  1. R1: ch 24, sl st to first ch to form a ring, making sure not to twist. 24 sts.
  2. R2: ch 1, sc in each ch around. 24 sts.

  11. R12: BLO sc in each st around. 48 sts.
  12. R13: sc in each st around. 48 sts.

Try the pants over the monkey body. They should sit high on the belly and puff around the hips. If too loose, add one extra decrease round. If too tight, remove R11 and keep 54 sts at the waist.

Front Bib

Turn the overalls so the center front is facing you. Join orange yarn to the front waist, centered over 18 stitches.

  1. Row 1: ch 1, sc 18 across front waist. 18 sts.
  2. Row 2: ch 1, turn, dec, sc 14, dec. 16 sts.

  • Make one vertical stem in the center with 3 small straight stitches.
  • Add two lazy-daisy leaves on the left side of the stem.
  • Add two lazy-daisy leaves on the right side of the stem.
  • Repeat two smaller leaf sprigs beside the center sprig, each about 3 sts wide.

Keep the leaf embroidery flat so it does not overpower the small bib. Secure all knots on the inside of the overalls.

FO and weave in the ends. For the orange leaf, use orange yarn. For the green leaf, use green yarn. Add a center vein with a long straight stitch if desired.

Assembly Order

Assembly is the most important part of making the monkey look like the image. Work slowly, pin all pieces before sewing, and view the doll from the front after every step.

  1. Sew the cream face panel onto the brown head first.
  2. Add eyes, nose, mouth, and small eyelash stitches.
  3. Sew the inner ear pieces to the outer ears.
  4. Attach ears to the head at equal height, slightly forward.
  5. Sew the head securely to the body.
  6. Sew arms to the upper sides of the body.
  7. Sew legs to the lower body.
  8. Attach feet and sandals.
  9. Dress the body in the orange overalls.
  10. Sew or tack the overalls to the body at the waist if needed.
  11. Add bib embroidery, buttons, straps, and sunflower appliqués.
  12. Sew the tail to the back lower body.
  13. Add the sunflower hair accessory and yellow headband cord.
  14. Finish the props and arrange them beside the monkey.

Detailed Placement Guide

The head should be the largest part of the doll, about half the total visual height from shoes to top of head. The body and overalls should look compact and rounded, giving the doll a soft baby-like amigurumi proportion.

The cream face panel should cover the lower front of the head but not reach the very top. Leave enough brown above the eyes to form the monkey’s hair cap. The edge of the cream face should curve upward on both sides, creating soft cheek points.

The ears should be placed wide and low enough to frame the face. In the image, the ears sit just below the top of the head and slightly behind the face edge. Do not place them too high, or the monkey will look more like a bear.

The overalls should sit high under the arms and cover the belly fully. The pants should puff outward, with the leg openings sitting above the cream ankles. Add flowers after the overalls are on the doll so you can place them where they are most visible.

Sunflower Placement on Overalls

  • Place one flower near the lower left front pant leg.
  • Place one flower near the lower right front pant leg.
  • Place one flower near the center lower belly.
  • Place one flower on the left side of the overalls.
  • Place one flower on the right side, partly wrapping around the hip.

Sew each flower with dark brown thread or matching yellow yarn. Stitch through the center first, then tack two or three petals so the flower stays flat but still looks dimensional.

Optional Texture Details

To make the monkey look closer to the crocheted texture in the image, use small surface crochet lines and embroidery sparingly. The main effect should come from neat single crochet rounds and clean color placement, not too many extra decorations.

  • Add one short brown surface stitch above each eye to suggest a soft brow.
  • Add two tiny cream stitches on the lower face for cheek shaping.
  • Add a few vertical orange stitches at the overalls waist to mimic fabric creases.
  • Add small green stitches around the bib leaves for a hand-embroidered look.
  • Add tan button stitches in an X shape on both front buttons.

Beginner Tips

Use stitch markers in every round and count often. Because this doll includes many small decorative parts, it is easy to lose track of stitch counts. Finish the main monkey first, then add the overalls and props one at a time.

When sewing pieces together, use the same yarn color as the piece being attached. Brown yarn should attach brown pieces, cream yarn should attach cream details, and orange yarn should attach the overalls. This keeps the finished doll neat and photo-ready.

Do not rush the face. The eye placement, nose length, and mouth angle create the gentle expression. Before securing the eyes or embroidery permanently, place pins or temporary thread marks to check the expression from a normal viewing distance.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

After all parts are sewn, check the monkey from the front, sides, and top. Adjust the overalls so the bib is centered under the face and the straps sit evenly over the shoulders. Steam blocking is not necessary, but you can gently shape the flowers and leaves by hand.

  • Secure the head firmly so it does not wobble.
  • Make sure both ears are level.
  • Check that the tail curves naturally behind the right side.
  • Trim or hide all yarn tails inside the body or clothing.
  • Use one final black stitch to sharpen the nose if needed.

Care Notes

Spot clean the monkey gently with cool water and mild soap. Avoid soaking if you used buttons, beads, wire, or glued details. Press with a towel and let the doll air dry flat in a shaded area.

  • Do not machine wash if the doll contains safety eyes, buttons, or internal wire.
  • Do not tumble dry.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight for long periods to protect the orange and yellow yarn.
  • For child-safe versions, embroider the eyes and omit wire, beads, and small buttons.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The cream face is centered and smoothly sewn.
  • The eyes are even and about 7 stitches apart.
  • The ears are slightly cupped and angled forward.
  • The overalls are puffy, orange, and high-waisted.
  • The sunflower appliqués are visible on the pants.
  • The green leaves are embroidered on the bib.
  • The sandals have orange straps and tiny green leaves.
  • The hair sunflower sits above the left ear with a yellow headband cord.
  • The tail is attached low at the back and curves naturally.
  • The props are complete: mushrooms, acorn bag, green cushion, acorn, and loose leaves.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, store the monkey lying flat or standing with support. Do not place heavy objects on the head, ears, flowers, or tail. If the overalls become flattened, gently fluff them with your fingers and reshape the pant legs.

For dust removal, use a soft brush or lint roller with very light pressure. If a sunflower petal curls, dampen your fingers slightly, shape the petal, and allow it to dry naturally. Keep the doll in a dry place to protect the stuffing and embroidery.

If gifting the doll, include a small care note. Mention that the item is handmade, should be spot cleaned, and contains small decorative parts unless you have made a fully embroidered child-safe version.
