Pattern Overview

This pattern is written for knitting in the round where possible, using small double-pointed needles or the magic loop method. The fox is worked in separate pieces, stuffed firmly, then seamed together with careful shaping so the finished toy has the same upright, soft-bodied look as the reference image.

The design includes a large rounded fox head, a smaller soft torso hidden partly by overalls, slim arms with striped sleeves, rounded legs, brown sandal feet, a fluffy cream-tipped tail, and several detailed accessories. The overalls are knitted separately and fitted over the body for a clean layered finish.

  • Skill level: Confident beginner to intermediate.
  • Main techniques: Knit, purl, increases, decreases, short shaping, mattress stitch, duplicate stitch, embroidery, simple seaming.

  • Finished size: About 10.5 inches tall when using DK yarn and 2.75 mm needles.
  • Gauge: 7 stitches and 10 rounds = 1 inch in stockinette, worked firmly.

Important Knitting Notes

Work the fox pieces tightly so stuffing does not show through. For amigurumi knitting, a firm gauge is more important than matching the exact yarn label recommendation. Use smaller needles than usual for your yarn if your fabric looks loose.

Most pieces are worked from the bottom upward or from the nose outward. Leave long yarn tails on all pieces because the neatest finish comes from using the cast-on or bind-off tail for seaming.

  • Stuff the head very firmly so it stays round and smooth.
  • Stuff the arms lightly so they hang naturally beside the body.
  • Stuff the legs firmly at the feet and medium-firm through the thighs.
  • Pin every part in place before sewing to keep the fox balanced.
  • Use small ladder stitches for visible seams and mattress stitch for clothing edges.

Finished Measurements

  • Total height: About 10.5 inches from sandal sole to ear tip.
  • Head width: About 3.75 inches across the cheeks.
  • Body height: About 4 inches from neck to bottom.
  • Leg length: About 3 inches including sandal foot.
  • Arm length: About 3.25 inches from shoulder to paw.
  • Tail length: About 4 inches along the curve.

Use cream embroidery yarn to stitch one small vertical claw on the front of each brown paw. The claw should be about 3 rounds tall. Sew the arms to the upper body just under the head, angled downward so they rest beside the overalls.

Legs and Feet

The legs are rust orange with sandal feet. The upper legs disappear into the green overalls, while the lower ankles show beneath the pant cuffs.

  9. Stuff firmly, shaping the toe end wide and rounded.
  10. Rnd 12: K2tog around. 6 sts.
  11. Cut yarn, pull through remaining sts, and close.

Sew one foot to each leg with the toe facing forward. Use cream yarn to embroider three short toe lines on each foot. Each toe line should be 4 rounds tall, spaced evenly across the front.

Brown Sandals

The sandals are worked in two parts: a tan sole and a brown top strap. Add a tiny red ladybug bead or embroidered ladybug on each outer side, just like the decorative red accents in the image.

Tan Soles

Make two soles.

  1. Using tan yarn, CO 8 sts. Work flat.
  2. Row 1: K all sts.
  3. Row 2: P all sts.

Sew one sole under each foot using small whip stitches around the edge. Let a narrow tan border show beyond the orange foot.

Brown Sandal Straps

  1. Using dark brown yarn, CO 5 sts. Work flat.
  2. Rows 1-18: K every row for garter stitch.
  3. BO all sts, leaving a long tail.
  4. Make two straps for each foot.

Place one strap across the toes and one strap around the ankle. Sew the ends under the sides of the foot. Add one small red bead or embroidered ladybug to the outer side of each sandal strap. To embroider a ladybug, make a red oval with 5 satin stitches, add a black center line, and add 2 tiny black dots.

Green Overalls

The overalls are the main clothing feature. They are moss green, slightly loose, with rounded pant legs, a bib front, two shoulder straps, small buttons, and tiny embroidered flowers on the chest.

Overall Pants

Work the legs separately first, then join them for the body of the overalls.

  1. Using moss green yarn, CO 26 sts for the first pant leg. Join to work in the round.

Slip the overall pants onto the fox body before sewing the legs fully to the body. Adjust the crotch seam so it sits centered between the legs. Use moss green yarn to sew the small center gap closed neatly.

Rolled Pant Cuffs

The pant cuffs in the image have a textured folded look. Add cuffs after the pants are on the fox.

  1. With moss green yarn, pick up 26 sts around the bottom of one pant leg.
  2. Rnds 1-2: P all sts to create a raised ridge.
  3. Rnds 3-4: K all sts.
  4. Rnd 5: P all sts.

  8. Rows 20-22: Work in st st.
  9. BO all sts.

Sew the bib to the front top of the pants. The lower edge should overlap the pants by about 3 rounds. Keep the bib centered and smooth. Use tiny stitches along the sides and bottom, leaving the top edge clean.

Shoulder Straps

  1. Using moss green yarn, CO 5 sts.
  2. Rows 1-34: K every row for garter stitch.
  3. BO all sts.
  4. Make a second strap the same way.

Attach one end of each strap to the back waist of the overalls. Cross the straps lightly over the shoulders if needed for fit, or place them straight over the shoulders as shown from the front. Sew the front ends behind two small buttons at the top corners of the bib.

Overall Buttons

  • Sew one small peach or wooden-style button to the upper left bib corner.
  • Sew the second button to the upper right bib corner.
  • Use matching thread and pass through each button 4 times for safety.
  • For a child-safe version, embroider round buttons using satin stitch instead of using hard buttons.

Flower Embroidery on the Overalls

The front of the overalls has tiny garden flowers scattered across the bib and upper pants. Keep the embroidery delicate so it looks hand-stitched rather than bulky.

  • Yellow flower: Make 5 lazy-daisy stitches around one center French knot.
  • White flower: Make 6 short straight stitches around a pale yellow center.
  • Pink buds: Make 2 small satin stitches side by side with a green stem.
  • Lavender dots: Make single French knots, spaced randomly.
  • Green stems: Use straight stitches 2 to 4 rounds tall.

Place the largest yellow flower slightly left of center on the bib. Add a white flower lower left, two pink buds near the center, and several tiny yellow and lavender dots across the chest. Do not overcrowd the fabric; the image shows light, scattered garden embroidery.

Fox Tail

The tail is large, curved, rust orange, and cream at the tip. It attaches behind the body and curls to the side. Knit it firmly and shape the curve while stuffing.

  1. Using cream yarn, CO 8 sts. Join in the round.

  18. Rnd 41: Repeat K3, k2tog around. 16 sts.
  19. Rnd 42: K all sts.
  20. BO all sts, leaving a long tail for sewing.

📌Thank you for reading the article

To shape the curve, thread rust yarn through the inner side of the tail from base to midsection, pull gently, and secure. Sew the base of the tail to the back of the body at a slight side angle so it curls beside the fox instead of sticking straight back.

Berry Shoulder Bag

The small burgundy shoulder bag looks like a strawberry or berry pouch. It has a rounded body, little blue dots, tan leaves at the top, and a strap that crosses the fox’s chest.

Bag Body

  1. Using burgundy yarn and 2.75 mm needles, CO 8 sts. Join in the round.

Sew the three tan leaves to the top edge of the bag, fanning them outward. Add one small brown straight stitch above the leaves for the stem.

Bag Strap

  1. Using burgundy yarn, CO 4 sts.
  2. Rows 1-70: K every row for garter stitch.
  3. BO all sts.

Sew one end of the strap to each side of the bag. Place the strap diagonally over the fox from one shoulder to the opposite hip. Tack the strap lightly at the shoulder and side seam so it stays in position.

Small Watering Can

The watering can is a soft gray-blue accessory with a rounded body, tiny handle, short spout, and small side knob. It is worked small and simple, but the shape should be clear.

  2. Rnds 1-8: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 9: K2tog around. 4 sts.

Sew the spout to one side of the can at an upward angle. Flatten the spout slightly as you sew so it resembles the narrow spout shown beside the fox.

Watering Can Handle

  1. Using gray-blue yarn, CO 4 sts.
  2. Rows 1-24: K every row.
  3. BO all sts.

Curve the handle into a loop and sew both ends to the opposite side of the can. Add a tiny raised knob on top by making 5 satin stitches in the same spot.

Face Placement

Good face placement is what makes the fox look gentle and close to the image. Take time with pins before sewing or attaching eyes permanently.

  • Place the safety eyes between rounds 24 and 25 of the head.
  • Keep about 12 stitches between the eyes.
  • The eyes should sit just above the cream cheek panels.
  • The muzzle should begin about 2 rounds below the eyes.
  • The black nose should sit near the lower center of the muzzle.
  • Add two small black eyebrow stitches above the eyes, angled gently downward toward the center.
  • Add two tiny cheek or whisker marks on the rust-orange face, one on each side.

To create a soft inset eye look, thread rust yarn from the back of the head to the inside edge of one eye. Pull gently, stitch once beside the eye, then pass to the other eye and repeat. Do not pull too tightly. The effect should be subtle and friendly.

Assembly Order

  1. Sew the cream cheek panels to the head first.
  2. Sew the cream muzzle over the lower center of the cheeks.
  3. Add the black nose, mouth, eyebrow stitches, and tiny face marks.
  4. Attach safety eyes or sew bead eyes securely.
  5. Sew inner ears to outer ears, then attach both ears to the head.
  6. Stuff and finish the body, legs, feet, and arms.
  7. Sew the legs to the lower body, making sure the fox can sit or stand supported.
  8. Dress the body in the green overalls and sew the bib and straps in place.
  9. Sew the arms to the shoulders, placing them over the shirt sleeve line.
  10. Sew the head to the neck using a full circle of strong stitches.
  11. Attach the tail to the back at a slight side angle.
  12. Add the bag strap diagonally across the body and tack it in place.
  13. Sew the bee and leaf crown to the top of the head.
  14. Finish with the sandals, embroidered flowers, and garden accessories.

Detailed Sewing Guidance

When sewing the head to the body, use rust orange yarn and make two full rounds of stitches around the neck. The head is large, so the seam must be firm. After the first round of sewing, check that the face points straight forward before adding the second strengthening round.

For the legs, position them about 0.75 inch apart at the lower body. The feet should angle slightly outward, matching the relaxed handmade stance in the image. Sew around each leg opening twice so the legs do not wobble.

The arms should sit just under the head and over the sides of the bib. Angle each arm downward. The paws should end around the upper thigh area. This placement helps the fox look soft and calm rather than stiff.

The tail should be attached after the overalls are already on the body. Place the tail behind the right side of the body, slightly below the waistline. Stitch through the base of the tail and the body several times because the tail is larger than the arms and needs extra support.

Embroidery Details

Use embroidery sparingly and neatly. The beauty of this fox comes from many tiny details, but each detail should be small. Oversized stitches can make the face and clothing look crowded.

  • Use black thread for the eyebrows and short cheek marks.
  • Use cream yarn for the toes on the feet and paws.
  • Use green floss for flower stems on the overalls.
  • Use yellow, white, pink, and lavender for small flowers.
  • Use blue floss for berry bag dots.
  • Use black and red thread to make ladybugs if buttons are not available.

Beginner Tips for a Neater Finish

  • Keep your cast-on tails long because they are useful for sewing small pieces.
  • Stuff gradually instead of pushing in one large clump of fiberfill.
  • Roll the stuffed head between your palms to smooth the surface.
  • Pin clothing before sewing so the bib and straps stay centered.
  • Use the same yarn color as the piece when sewing visible seams.
  • For tiny accessories, use thinner yarn or embroidery floss if DK yarn feels bulky.

Customization Notes

To keep the fox close to the image, use muted woodland colors rather than bright colors. Rust orange, moss green, cream, tan, burgundy, brown, and soft blue-gray create the same natural garden style.

The small flowers may be arranged freely, but keep them concentrated on the bib and upper front of the overalls. The shoulder bag should remain burgundy with tan leaves so it reads clearly as a berry pouch.

For a baby-safe version, replace safety eyes, buttons, beads, and ladybug buttons with embroidery. Sew all accessories very firmly, or leave the small removable garden props out of toys intended for young children.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

After all parts are sewn, check the fox from the front, sides, and back. Adjust the ears so they stand evenly, smooth the muzzle with your fingers, and make sure the bag strap lies diagonally across the chest without twisting.

  • Tighten any loose sewing tails and weave them inside the body.
  • Brush the ears and tail lightly with your fingers to shape them.
  • Check that the eyes are level before final display.
  • Add one final small stitch under the nose if the mouth needs more definition.
  • Make sure the overalls sit high on the chest and the cuffs rest above the ankles.

Care Notes

Spot clean the fox with cool water and a mild wool-safe soap. Do not soak the toy if it includes buttons, beads, or glued decorations. Press gently with a towel and reshape while damp.

  • Do not machine wash if the fox has small sewn accessories.
  • Do not tumble dry.
  • Keep away from high heat and direct sunlight.
  • Store flat or upright with the tail supported.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is firmly stuffed and securely attached.
  • The cream cheek panels are even on both sides.
  • The ears are angled outward with dark tips visible.
  • The green overalls have two straps, two buttons, cuffs, and flower embroidery.
  • The striped sleeves show clearly under the overalls.
  • The berry bag has a strap, tan leaves, and blue dots.
  • The sandals have tan soles, brown straps, cream toes, and red ladybug details.
  • The bee and leaf crown are firmly sewn to the head.
  • The tail curves gently behind the body.
  • All loose yarn ends are woven in securely.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For long-term display, keep the fox in a dry area away from dust and moisture. If dust collects on the surface, use a soft clean brush and brush gently in the direction of the stitches.

When storing the fox, wrap it loosely in acid-free tissue or a clean cotton cloth. Avoid plastic bags for long storage because trapped moisture can affect the yarn and stuffing.

  • Refresh the shape by gently pressing the head, body, and tail back into place.
  • Check embroidered flowers occasionally and secure any lifted threads.
  • Keep the separate hat, trowel, and watering can in a small fabric pouch.
  • Avoid hanging the fox by the bag strap or arms.
  • For photography, support the back and tail so the toy stays balanced.
