Knitting Tutorial: Highland Cow Amigurumi in Striped Outfit – Free Knitting Pattern

This friendly knitted Highland cow amigurumi is dressed exactly like the image: a rust-brown shaggy cow with cream horns, round ears, a soft pink muzzle, a green-and-orange striped cardigan, green pants, brown sandals with tiny white flowers, a striped pom-pom hat, a brown shoulder bag with a bee motif, and two small knitted apples. Pattern Notes

This pattern is written for a firm knitted amigurumi fabric. Knit tightly enough so the stuffing does not show. Most body pieces are knitted in the round, while clothing pieces are worked flat or in small tubes for clean edges. Stuff each part gradually and firmly, but do not overstuff the face because the muzzle needs to sit softly forward.

The Highland cow in the image has a large round head, a smaller compact body, short rounded arms, straight green pants legs, and a shaggy fringe covering the forehead. The cardigan sits over the body with visible front buttons, a tiny golden pocket, and horizontal autumn stripes. The horns are cream and curl upward behind the flower crown.

Color Stripe Sequence for Cardigan and Hat

  • Stripe A: sage green, 2 rounds or rows.
  • Stripe B: warm orange, 2 rounds or rows.
  • Stripe C: tan brown, 2 rounds or rows.
  • Stripe D: sage green, 2 rounds or rows.
  • Repeat this sequence for the cardigan body, sleeves, and hat to match the cozy striped outfit in the image.

Head

Use rust brown yarn and 2.75 mm needles. Work in the round. The head is round and slightly wider through the cheeks, with the face covered by long yarn hair at the top.

Body

The body is mostly hidden by the cardigan and pants, but it needs a solid pear-shaped base so the toy sits well. Use rust brown yarn.

  1. CO 10 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Kfb in every st around. 20 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: K all sts.

  12. BO all sts. Leave a long tail.

Second Leg

Repeat the same instructions for the second leg. Sew both legs to the lower body with 4 sts between them at the inner top edge. Angle the feet slightly outward so the sandals will show clearly from the front.

Fold the cast-on edge slightly and stitch it closed to cup the ear. Sew one ear to each side of the head at Rnds 15-18, behind the hair fringe. The ears should sit wide and rounded like the image.

Cream Horns

Make two horns in cream yarn. The horns curve upward and sit behind the flower crown.

Stuff very lightly. To create the curved horn shape, pass the yarn tail through the inside curve and pull gently before sewing. Sew horns to the top sides of the head, about 8 sts apart, angled outward and upward.

Shaggy Forehead Hair

The Highland cow’s fringe is one of the most important details. Use rust brown and a few warm orange strands. The hair should cover the forehead and fall toward the muzzle.

  1. Cut 40 strands of rust brown yarn, each 5 inches long.
  2. Cut 10 strands of warm orange yarn, each 5 inches long.
  3. Using a tapestry needle or crochet hook, attach strands along the top front of the head from Rnd 8 to Rnd 15.
  4. Attach 3 strands at each point by folding them in half and knotting them firmly through a knitted stitch.
  5. Fill the top center first, then add strands toward both ears.
  6. Trim the fringe to about 2 inches long at center and 1.5 inches near the sides.
  7. Brush lightly with fingers only. Do not comb aggressively because the rustic strand texture should remain visible.

  • Use dark brown yarn to make one small vertical stitch at the lower center of the muzzle.
  • Add two tiny nostril stitches on the upper muzzle, spaced 4 sts apart.
  • Keep the expression simple and gentle, matching the handmade cow face in the image.

Assembly Order

  1. Sew the head to the body first. Use a strong ladder stitch around the neck opening twice.
  2. Attach both legs to the lower body, keeping them parallel with the feet facing forward.
  3. Sew arms to the body sides under the shoulder line.
  4. Attach ears to the sides of the head before adding the horns.

  6. Add the shaggy hair fringe, then trim gently.
  7. Sew the flower crown over the top of the hair between the horns.
  8. Put the cardigan on the body and secure it with small hidden stitches at the shoulders and side seams.
  9. Sew the buttons and golden pocket onto the cardigan.
  10. Add sandals and white shoe flowers.
  11. Place the bag, hat, apples, and tail as shown in the image.

Detailed Knitting Tips for the Image-Accurate Look

Keep the body fabric firm and compact. A loose gauge will make the toy look floppy instead of amigurumi-style. The Highland cow should have a rounded head, a short body, and small limbs. When stuffing, roll small pieces of fiberfill before inserting them so the surface stays smooth.

The cardigan should sit slightly boxy, with the lower rib resting at the waist. Do not make the cardigan too long because the green pants must remain visible below it. The sleeves should end before the rust brown hoof hands, leaving the hands clearly exposed.

The stripes should look warm and rustic, not perfectly commercial. Carry yarn loosely up the inside edges when working small flat pieces, or cut each stripe color and weave in ends for a cleaner finish. Keep the orange stripes bright because they help match the autumn feeling of the image.

For the hair, the strands should not be too thin. Use the same DK yarn and trim only after the horns and flower crown are attached. The fringe should look full across the forehead and slightly uneven at the tips, like the soft shaggy Highland cow hair in the photo.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

After all pieces are sewn, check the face from the front. The muzzle should be centered, the eyes should sit evenly, and the horns should be balanced behind the flower crown. Add tiny corrective stitches if one side tilts.

  • Secure all buttons tightly with several passes of sewing thread or yarn.
  • Hide yarn tails deep inside the stuffed body.
  • Shape the ears by pinching the lower edge and sewing through the fold.
  • Steam blocking is not recommended for the stuffed cow, but the cardigan and bag may be lightly flattened before attaching.

Care Notes

This knitted Highland cow is best used as a decorative handmade toy. Because it has buttons, small flowers, and sewn accessories, it is not recommended for babies or pets. Handle the flower crown, bag strap, and pom-pom gently.

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if using wooden buttons or safety eyes.
  • Let the toy air dry fully before storing.
  • Reshape the hair fringe with fingers after cleaning.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is round, large, and firmly stuffed.
  • The pink muzzle is centered below the eyes.
  • The rust brown shaggy hair covers the forehead.
  • The cream horns sit behind the flower crown.
  • The cardigan has green, orange, and tan stripes.
  • Four buttons are sewn down the front opening.

Store the finished Highland cow in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Long sun exposure may fade the warm orange, green, and rust brown yarn. If the toy is displayed on a shelf, gently dust it with a soft cloth or clean makeup brush.

For long-term storage, wrap the cow loosely in acid-free tissue or a clean cotton cloth. Do not compress the flower crown, horns, pom-pom, or bag strap. Keep the apples and hat in the same storage box so the full set remains together.

  • Avoid bleach, hot water, and tumble drying.
  • Do not pull the hair fringe; separate strands gently with fingers.
  • If a button loosens, remove it and sew it back securely before display.
  • If the cardigan stretches, reshape it by hand and let it rest flat overnight.

Your Highland cow amigurumi is now complete, with the striped outfit, flower crown, cozy accessories, shoulder bag, hat, apples, and tiny shoe flowers arranged to match the image as closely as possible in knitted form.
