This adorable crochet koala is designed with a rounded gray head, fuzzy side ears, a black oval nose, glossy eyes, and a sweet blue-and-cream striped dress. The finished toy also includes blue sandals, tiny stitched toes, a crossbody pouch with a button flap, daisy flower details, and a matching straw-style sun hat with a blue ribbon.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Gauge and Crochet Style
Work the koala with tight amigurumi tension so the stuffing does not show. With a 2.75 mm hook and worsted weight yarn, 6 single crochet rounds should measure about 1 inch vertically. The stitches in the image look compact, evenly stacked, and firm.
The head and limbs are worked in continuous rounds. The dress skirt is worked around the body in rounds with controlled increases, creating a slightly flared shape. The cream stripes must sit clearly between the blue bands, just like the koala in the photo.
Important Construction Notes
- The koala has a large round head, wider than the body.
- The ears are attached high on the sides of the head and have a fluffy halo around the gray center.
- The black nose is a raised oval placed vertically in the middle of the face.
- The dress has a blue bodice, cream shoulder straps, cream horizontal stripes, and a scalloped cream hem.
- The arms angle downward beside the skirt, with black claw stitches at the paws.
- The legs are short and straight, with blue sandals over cream soles.
- The pouch strap crosses from the left shoulder to the right hip of the toy.
- The daisy decorations appear on the head, bodice, skirt, and pouch.
- The hat is made separately and displayed beside the koala, but you may also sew it lightly to one paw or attach it with removable thread.
Head
Use light gray yarn and the 2.75 mm hook. Work in continuous rounds. Stuff gradually and firmly as the head grows. The final shape should be round, slightly wide at the cheeks, and softly flattened at the bottom where it joins the neck.

Face Details
Raised Black Oval Nose
Use black yarn. The nose should be vertical, oval, and slightly raised. It sits between the eyes, starting just above the eye line and ending about 3 rounds below it.
- R1: ch 5. Starting in the second ch from hook, sc 3, 3 sc in last ch. Work on the other side of the chain, sc 2, inc in last ch. (10)
- R2: inc, sc 2, inc in next 3 sts, sc 2, inc in next 2 sts. (16)

FO with a long tail. Add a very small amount of stuffing under the nose as you sew it to the face. Position the top of the nose around R14 and the bottom around R18. The nose should cover about 4 stitches in width and 5 rounds in height.
Eyes, Lashes, Brows, and Mouth
- Use black embroidery yarn for all facial stitches.
- Add two short lashes beside each eye. Each lash should be about 1 stitch long.
- Embroider one short curved eyebrow above each eye, about 2 rounds above the safety eyes.
- Make a tiny mouth line under the nose by stitching one short vertical line down from the nose base, then one small curved stitch to one side.
- Keep the expression soft, sleepy, and sweet, matching the gentle look in the image.
Inner Ears
Make two inner ear circles with light gray yarn. These are the smooth centers that sit beneath the fuzzy rim. Work in continuous rounds and keep the circles flat.

FO with a long tail. The inner ear should measure about 1.5 inches across before the fuzzy edging is added. Do not overstuff. A flat, soft circle looks closer to the photo than a dome.
Fluffy Ear Edging
Use fuzzy gray eyelash yarn and a 3.25 mm hook. Join the fuzzy yarn to any stitch on R6 of the inner ear. Work slowly because fuzzy yarn can hide the stitches.
- Edging R1: ch 1, sc in same st, 2 sc in next st, repeat around. Join with sl st. (45)
- Edging R2: ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with sl st. (45)
FO and weave in the fuzzy end securely. Brush the edge outward with your fingers. Sew the ears to the head from R10 to R18, one on each side. Tilt them slightly upward so they frame the head like soft fluffy fans.
Body
Use light gray yarn. The body is smaller than the head and forms a short oval torso under the dress. Work firmly, because the skirt will be attached around this shape.

Stuff the body firmly, keeping the bottom rounded and the neck smaller. FO with a long tail if sewing to the head separately. The head should sit slightly angled, as in the image, giving the koala a relaxed, cuddly pose.
Legs
Make two legs with light gray yarn. The feet are slightly wider at the bottom and narrow toward the top. The legs should show below the flared dress, about 1.5 inches apart when sewn on.

Second Leg
Repeat the same instructions for the second leg. Before sewing, check that both feet point forward. The sandal straps will be added after the legs are attached.
Arms
Make two arms in light gray. The arms are tapered, with small rounded paws at the ends. They angle downward beside the dress and stop near the upper skirt edge.
- R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
- R2: sc 1, inc, repeat 3 times. (9)

- R6: sc 2, dec, repeat 3 times. (9)
- R7-R14: sc in each st around. (9 for 8 rounds)
Stuff the paw firmly and the arm very lightly. Flatten the final round. FO with a long tail. Embroider three black claw lines on each paw, each line about 2 rounds long. Keep the lines close together like the visible paw stitches in the image.
Basic Neck Join
Place the head on top of the body with the face angled slightly upward. The head should not sit perfectly straight; a gentle tilt makes the koala look more natural and close to the photo.
- Pin the body opening to the lower center of the head.
- Use the body yarn tail to sew through one stitch of the body and one stitch of the head at a time.
- Go around the neck twice for strength.
- Add extra stuffing into the neck before closing the last gap.
- Weave the yarn tail deeply into the head and trim.
Dress Bodice
The bodice is crocheted directly around the upper body. Use sky blue yarn. It should cover the chest and stop just above the skirt. The top edge sits under the arms, with cream shoulder straps added afterward.
Join blue yarn around the body at R9, with the body held upside down so you can work toward the lower body. If you prefer, make the bodice as a removable tube, but sewing it on gives the neatest look.

- Bodice R6: ch 1, sc in each st around. Join. (20)
FO and weave the blue end inside the dress. The bodice should look snug, not loose. The front should be smooth because the daisy flowers will be sewn to the upper chest.
Cream Shoulder Straps
Use cream yarn. The straps cross visually over the shoulders and connect the top edge of the bodice to the back. Make two straps.
- Ch 16.
- Starting in the second ch from hook, sc 15.
- FO with long tails on both ends.
Sew one strap from the front right bodice edge to the back right bodice edge. Sew the second strap from the front left bodice edge to the back left bodice edge. Each strap should sit near the shoulders and leave the gray neck visible.
Striped Skirt
The skirt flares outward and has alternating blue and cream bands. The stripes in the image are horizontal and evenly spaced. Work the skirt from the lower edge of the bodice downward.
Hold the koala with the head upward. Join sky blue yarn to the front loop area just below the bodice. Work joined rounds so the color changes stay clean at the back.

The skirt should spread gently over the legs. Do not pull the color changes too tight. The back seam should be aligned at the center back, hidden beneath the pouch strap when viewed from above.
Scalloped Cream Skirt Edge
Use cream yarn. The lower edge in the image has a soft scalloped trim. Work into the stitches of the final blue skirt round.
- Join cream yarn at the back center.
- Ch 1, sc in the same stitch.
- Skip 1 st, 5 dc in next st, skip 1 st, sc in next st.
- Repeat the scallop sequence all the way around.
- Adjust the final scallop by skipping one fewer stitch if needed to end evenly at the back.
- Join with sl st to the first sc and FO.

Steam lightly with your hand nearby, never pressing the toy flat. Shape the scallops with your fingers while the yarn cools. The edge should look creamy, rounded, and slightly ruffled.
Blue Sandals
The sandals have cream soles, blue straps, and small tan button accents on the outer sides. Make the sandal soles first, then add straps around the gray feet.
Cream Sandal Soles

Blue Sandal Toe Strap
Make two with sky blue yarn.
- Ch 10.
- Starting in second ch from hook, sc 9.
- FO with long tails.
Wrap one strap over the front of each foot, about 2 rounds above the sole. Sew both ends to the sides of the foot. The strap should curve over the toes and leave the embroidered toe lines visible below it.
Blue Ankle Strap
Make two with sky blue yarn.
- Ch 13.
- Starting in second ch from hook, sc 12.
- FO with long tails.
Wrap one ankle strap around each leg just above the foot. Sew the ends at the outer side. Attach one tiny tan button over each join, matching the visible button detail in the image.
Toe Lines
- Use black yarn and a yarn needle.
- Make three short vertical toe lines on each foot.
- Place the lines on the front gray area inside the cream sole edge.
- Each line should cover about 2 rows.
- Keep the toe lines evenly spaced.
Crossbody Pouch
The pouch is small, beige, rectangular, and hangs at the koala’s right hip. It has a flap, a small button, and a daisy sewn near the lower front. The strap crosses the blue dress diagonally.
Pouch Body
Use beige yarn. Work in rows.

FO with a long tail. Sew the straight edge of the flap to the top back of the pouch. Fold the flap forward. Sew a small tan button to the front center, about 2 rows below the flap point.
Pouch Strap
Use beige yarn. The strap should be long enough to cross the koala from left shoulder to right hip.
- Ch 46.
- Starting in second ch from hook, sl st in each ch across. (45)
- FO with long tails.
Sew one end to the top left corner of the pouch and the other end to the top right corner. Place the strap over the koala’s left shoulder and let the pouch rest at the right side of the skirt. Tack the strap to the shoulder with two hidden stitches so it stays in place.
Daisy Flowers
The flowers are small and flat with cream or white petals and yellow centers. Make one medium flower for the head, two small flowers for the bodice, one or two for the skirt, and one for the pouch.

Assembly Order
- Crochet the head, body, legs, arms, ears, dress pieces, sandals, pouch, flowers, and hat.
- Attach the head to the body firmly with the slight relaxed tilt.
- Sew the legs under the body, spacing them evenly so the dress falls between them.
- Attach the arms at the sides of the upper body, angled downward.
- Sew the ears to the sides of the head, with fuzzy rims facing outward.
- Attach the nose and embroider the face before adding final decorative pieces.
- Finish the dress with straps, stripes, and scalloped hem.
- Add sandals, toe stitches, and button accents.
- Place the crossbody pouch and tack the strap at the shoulder.
- Sew flowers to the head, bodice, skirt, and pouch.
- Finish the sun hat with the blue band and bow.
Detailed Sewing and Positioning Guide
The ears are one of the most important parts of this koala. Pin each ear before sewing. The upper edge should begin around R10 of the head, and the lower edge should end around R18. Sew through the smooth gray ear center, not only the fuzzy edge.
The arms should be sewn just under the shoulder straps. Place each arm so the paw points slightly inward. The paws should rest close to the skirt, not stick straight out from the body.
The legs should be attached at the lower body before the skirt is fully shaped if you prefer easier sewing. If your skirt is already finished, lift the skirt gently and sew the legs securely to the gray body underneath.
The pouch should sit on top of the skirt, not beneath it. The lower edge of the pouch should touch the upper scallop area. The strap should cross cleanly over the blue and cream stripes without twisting.
Creating the Koala Shape Accurately
To match the photo, keep the head noticeably larger than the body. The face should be round and soft, with the nose centered and the eyes sitting low enough to create a sweet baby-like expression.
The body should not be long. The dress creates most of the visual shape below the head. The skirt should flare outward and hide part of the upper legs, leaving the feet and sandals clearly visible.
The ears should look fluffy and wide. If your fuzzy yarn is too thin, work one extra round of sc around the ear edge. If it becomes too large, lightly trim the fuzz instead of reducing the stitch count.
Color Placement Guide
- Light gray: head, body, arms, legs, inner ears.
- Fuzzy gray: outer ear halo.
- Black: nose, lashes, eyebrows, mouth, paw claws, toe lines.
- Sky blue: bodice, skirt stripes, sandals, hat ribbon, bow, flower leaves.
- Cream: skirt stripes, scalloped hem, sandal soles, hat, daisy petals, shoulder straps.
- Beige: pouch and pouch strap.
- Yellow: daisy centers.
Tips for Beginners
Use stitch markers at the beginning of every round. Amigurumi rounds can shift slightly, especially on the head and limbs. Marking each round helps keep the face, ears, and dress centered.
Stuff gradually instead of waiting until the last round. The head needs more stuffing in the cheek area and less pressure at the closing hole. Overstuffing the bottom of the head can make the neck bulky.
When sewing small pieces, use pins first. Step back and look at the koala from the front before stitching. A tiny difference in ear height or eye angle can change the whole expression.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
After all pieces are attached, check the face one last time. Add a small tightening stitch under each eye if you want a gentle cheek curve. Pull lightly only, because too much tension can distort the head.
Embroider the lashes after the eyes and nose are fully secured. Use short stitches and keep them delicate. The photo shows soft, simple facial lines rather than heavy embroidery.
Make sure the head flower is secure but not flattened. Stitch through the yellow center and one or two petal bases. Let the cream petals and blue leaves lift slightly for dimension.
Care Notes
- Spot clean the koala with a damp cloth and mild soap.
- Do not machine wash if the toy has buttons, safety eyes, fuzzy yarn, or a shaped hat.
- Let the toy air dry completely before storing.
- Brush the fuzzy ears gently with your fingers after cleaning.
- Keep the hat flat while drying so the brim keeps its shape.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The head is round, large, and securely attached.
- The fuzzy ears are even and placed high on the sides.
- The nose is black, oval, raised, and centered.
- The dress has clear blue and cream horizontal stripes.
- The scalloped cream hem is visible around the entire skirt.
- The sandals have blue straps, cream soles, toe lines, and tiny side buttons.
- The pouch hangs diagonally from the shoulder to the hip.
- The daisies are placed on the head, bodice, skirt, and pouch.
- The sun hat has a cream crown, wide brim, blue band, and side bow.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Store the finished koala away from direct sunlight to prevent fading, especially on the blue dress and cream hat. Keep it in a dry place where the fuzzy ears will not be crushed.
If dust collects on the toy, use a soft dry brush and move in the direction of the crochet stitches. For the fuzzy ears, lift the fibers gently instead of brushing harshly.
For long-term storage, wrap the koala loosely in acid-free tissue or a clean cotton cloth. Do not store heavy items on top of the hat, ears, pouch, or skirt scallops.
If gifting the koala to a young child, replace buttons and safety eyes with embroidered details. Sew all accessories permanently and check every seam carefully before use.
