Crochet Tutorial: Berry Forest Girl Doll – Free Crochet Pattern

This Berry Forest Girl Doll is a sweet woodland-inspired crochet doll with long wavy charcoal-gray hair, a berry-red dress, purple accents, green trim, flower and strawberry appliqués, matching berry sandals, a crossbody berry bag, a round berry beret, a small woven basket of berries, and a tiny pastel bird companion. The finished doll is designed to look like the image: soft, detailed, decorative, and full of forest-picnic charm.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US crochet terms and is worked mainly in continuous spiral rounds for the doll body, head, arms, legs, hair, accessories, and small decorations. The dress is built directly around the body, with layered skirt sections, scalloped edging, berry appliqués, tiny flowers, and a structured bodice.

The doll in the photo has a large round head, slim neck, narrow torso, long straight legs, slim arms, oversized skirt, soft shoes, and many small berry details. To keep the shape close to the image, stuff the head firmly, stuff the body moderately, and keep the arms and lower legs slim.

Finished Size

  • Doll height: about 12 inches from top of head to bottom of shoes.
  • Head width: about 3.25 inches across when stuffed.
  • Dress width: about 6 inches across the widest skirt edge.
  • Crossbody bag: about 1.75 inches tall.
  • Round beret: about 3 inches wide.
  • Small basket: about 1.5 inches tall without handle.
  • Bird: about 1.25 inches long.

Materials

  • Sport weight cotton yarn in skin tone, charcoal gray, berry red, burgundy, plum purple, forest green, mint green, cream, white, tan, soft pink, lavender, yellow, black, and small amounts of bright red.
  • 2.25 mm crochet hook for the doll and clothing.
  • 2.00 mm crochet hook for berries, flowers, facial details, and small appliqués.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Two 6 mm black safety eyes or embroidered eyes.
  • Black embroidery thread for lashes and eye shine details.
  • Pink embroidery thread or soft pastel yarn for cheeks.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Small amount of cardboard or plastic canvas for the bag base if desired.
  • Optional floral wire for keeping the bag strap and basket handle shaped.

Abbreviations

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • st: stitch
  • sts: stitches
  • R: round or row
  • FO: fasten off

Gauge

Using sport weight cotton and a 2.25 mm hook, 8 sc rounds should measure about 1 inch in height, and 8 sc stitches should measure about 1 inch across. Exact gauge is less important than tight, even stitches. The stuffing must not show through the fabric.

If your stitches are loose, move down to a 2.00 mm hook. If your doll becomes too small and stiff, move up to a 2.50 mm hook, but keep the small decorations in a tighter hook size so the berries and flowers remain neat.

Important Construction Notes

  • The head and body are crocheted as one continuous piece from the legs upward.
  • The arms are made separately and sewn to the shoulders at a slight downward angle.
  • The dress is crocheted partly onto the body and partly as separate layered skirt bands.
  • The hair cap is sewn onto the head, then long curled strands are attached around the lower edge.
  • The beret is a separate round accessory placed beside the doll or lightly tacked near the hair if desired.
  • The bag strap crosses from the doll’s left shoulder down to the right hip, matching the image.

Legs

Make two legs in skin tone. The legs are slim and long, with lightly shaped feet hidden partly inside berry-red sandals. Stuff as you go, but do not overstuff the ankles.

  2. R23: sc 10 around, do not fasten off.
  3. Ch 4. Join to the first leg with 1 sc into the next stitch after the last stitch made on the first leg.

  19. R46-R49: sc around for 4 rounds to form the neck. 12 sts each round.

Stuff the body firmly enough to hold shape, but leave the waist slightly soft so the dress can sit naturally. Continue directly into the head without cutting the yarn.

Head

The head is round and larger than the body, with a soft doll face. Place the safety eyes between R61 and R62, about 8 stitches apart. The face should look gentle, with the eyes placed slightly lower than the center of the head.

  1. R50: inc in each st around. 24 sts.

  14. R73: sc 1, dec around. 12 sts.
  15. R74: dec around. 6 sts.
  16. FO, weave through the front loops of the final 6 sts, pull closed, and hide the tail.

Arms

Make two arms in skin tone. The arms in the image are long, slim, and hang at the sides. They are not heavily stuffed, especially near the top, so they stay soft and close to the dress.

  1. R1: MR, 6 sc. 6 sts.
  2. R2: sc 1, inc around. 9 sts.
  3. R3-R5: sc around. 9 sts each round.
  4. R6: sc 1, dec, sc 3, dec, sc 1. 7 sts.
  5. R7-R24: sc around for 18 rounds. 7 sts each round.

  7. R25: flatten the opening and crochet 3 sc through both layers to close.
  8. FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Basic Bodice Foundation

The dress is worked in berry red, burgundy, plum purple, and green. The upper bodice fits around the torso and has a rounded neckline with small green trim. The skirt flares widely with berry and flower decorations around the bottom.

With berry red yarn, join to the front center waist area around body R35. Work around the body through surface stitches. If you prefer, make the bodice separately and sew it on, but working directly onto the doll creates the cleanest fit.

Curve each sleeve over the top of an arm. Sew the straight edge near the shoulder and allow the rounded edge to sit outward like a tiny puff sleeve.

Layered Skirt Base

The skirt is the most decorative part of the doll. It has a fitted upper band, a flared berry-red center, a plum-purple lower band, green scalloped trim, and red scallops at the very bottom. Work the first skirt layer directly into the waist stitches.

  6. Tack the band in place with 4 small stitches: front, back, left side, and right side.

Decorative Dress Stripes

The bodice and skirt have narrow horizontal texture lines. These can be embroidered with slip stitches after the dress is finished.

  • Using burgundy yarn, embroider one line around the bodice center.
  • Using plum purple yarn, surface slip stitch one line around the skirt just above the lower berry decorations.

Bird Head Shaping

The bird body is a single oval. To create the head area, pinch one end slightly rounder and sew two small stitches through the neck area with matching yarn. Do not pull too tightly; the bird should remain soft and rounded.

Bird Wings

  1. Make 2 with soft pink yarn.
  2. Ch 6.
  3. Starting in second ch from hook, sl st 1, sc 1, hdc 1, dc 1, 5 dc in last ch.
  4. Work back along opposite side: dc 1, hdc 1, sc 1, sl st 1.
  5. FO, leaving a sewing tail.
  6. Sew one wing to each side of the bird body.

Bird Beak and Eye

  • With yellow yarn, embroider a small triangular beak on the front.
  • With black thread, make one tiny eye on each side.
  • Use one small stitch of white thread beside the eye if you want a shine dot.

Face Embroidery

The face should remain simple and sweet. The image shows black oval eyes, tiny lashes, a subtle nose, and soft pink cheeks. Work slowly and check symmetry often.

  • Place eyes between head R61 and R62, about 8 stitches apart.
  • With black embroidery thread, add one tiny lash at the outer side of each eye.
  • Add a second shorter lash slightly below the first lash if desired.
  • With skin-tone yarn, embroider a tiny horizontal nose centered 2 rounds below the eyes.
  • With soft pink yarn, add two small cheek blush stitches below and slightly outside the eyes.
  • Do not make a large mouth; the doll in the image has a quiet, gentle expression.

Neckline Berry Details

The neckline has a green trim with small red berry accents at the center front. Add these after the bodice is finished.

  1. Make 3 tiny red berries: MR, 5 sc, sl st to close, FO.
  2. Use white thread to place one tiny seed stitch on each berry.
  3. Sew berries to the front neckline, centered above the bodice.
  4. With green yarn, add two small straight stitches beside each berry to suggest leaves.

Flower and Berry Placement on the Skirt

To match the image, decorate the lower front half of the skirt more heavily than the back. The back may have fewer decorations so the doll sits neatly.

  • Place 7 larger strawberries along the lower front skirt.
  • Place 5 white flowers between strawberries.
  • Place 8 small green leaves around the flowers and berries.
  • Add pink and cream embroidered buds in a loose curved line above the fruit.
  • Keep the center front balanced with one white flower and one strawberry near each side.

Optional Moss Display Mat

The image is styled on green moss. If you want a crochet display mat, make a simple textured green base. This is optional but helps create the forest look.

  1. With moss green yarn, ch 36.
  2. Row 1: sc in second ch from hook and across. 35 sts.
  3. Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc 5, bobble in next st, sc 5. Repeat across, ending with sc as needed.
  4. Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc across.
  5. Rows 4-15: Repeat Rows 2 and 3.
  6. Border: Work uneven scallops around with sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc groups.
  7. FO and brush lightly with a yarn needle to create a mossy texture.

Assembly Order

  1. Finish the legs, body, head, and arms.
  2. Attach safety eyes or embroider the eyes before fully closing the head.
  3. Sew the arms to the shoulders at a downward angle.
  4. Work or sew the bodice around the torso.
  5. Add the layered skirt, waist band, and trims.
  6. Sew the hair cap to the head.
  7. Attach bangs, long curls, and side curls.
  8. Add ears if they are still visible under the hair.
  9. Decorate the dress with berries, flowers, leaves, and buds.
  10. Make and attach the crossbody bag.
  11. Make and fit the sandals.
  12. Make the beret, baskets, berries, and bird.
  13. Finish the face embroidery and cheek details.

Detailed Sewing Angles

Sew the arms beginning one round below the neck and slightly forward of the side seam. Angle each arm down so the hands rest near the skirt edge. The image shows the arms relaxed, not sticking outward.

Place the hair cap so it tilts very slightly forward. The forehead bangs should sit between the eyes and the top of the head, but they should not cover the eyes. The longest curls should reach almost to the waist and skirt sides.

The crossbody bag strap should start high on the doll’s left shoulder, cross the bodice diagonally, and end at the right hip. Sew the bag at two points only, near the top back and lower side, so it appears to hang naturally.

Exact Color Layout Guide

  • Skin: head, neck, arms, legs, and visible feet.
  • Charcoal gray: hair cap, bangs, and all curls.
  • Berry red: main dress, skirt, bag body, sandals, beret base, strawberries.
  • Plum purple: dress stripes, lower dress band, bag stripe, beret spiral.
  • Forest green: neckline, skirt scallop trim, leaves, berry tops, beret stem.
  • White: small flowers and seed accents.
  • Yellow: flower centers and bird beak.
  • Tan: basket and sandal soles.
  • Lavender and pink: bird body and wings.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

After all pieces are attached, inspect the doll from the front. The head should be centered over the slim neck, the skirt should flare evenly, and the bag should sit on the right side. Adjust hair curls with your fingers so they fall around the shoulders like the image.

For the final facial detailing, use very small stitches. Add black lashes after the hair is attached so you can see how the face is framed. Add cheeks last, using two or three soft pink horizontal stitches on each side.

  • Do not pull the eye embroidery too tightly.
  • Keep the nose almost invisible and soft.
  • Place the blush slightly below the eyes.
  • Trim and hide every yarn tail carefully.

Care Notes

This doll is decorative and includes many small sewn-on berries, flowers, and accessories. It is best for gentle display, nursery decor, handmade gifts, or photo styling. If making for a young child, embroider the eyes and sew every small part extra securely.

  • Spot clean only with cool water.
  • Do not machine wash if using safety eyes or wired handles.
  • Do not tumble dry.
  • Reshape the skirt, hair, and beret while damp if needed.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is firmly stuffed and smoothly round.
  • The eyes are even and about 8 stitches apart.
  • The arms hang softly beside the body.
  • The dress has berry red, burgundy, purple, and green layers.
  • The skirt has strawberries, flowers, leaves, and small pastel buds.
  • The gray hair includes a cap, bangs, and long wavy curls.
  • The berry bag crosses from left shoulder to right hip.
  • The sandals have red straps, tan soles, leaves, and berries.
  • The beret has a purple spiral, green stem, berries, leaves, and white flowers.
  • The baskets and bird are finished as separate display pieces.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the doll, store it away from direct sunlight because strong light may fade berry red, plum purple, and green yarn over time. Keep the doll in a dry place and avoid crushing the hair curls or skirt scallops.

For dust removal, use a soft makeup brush or a cool hair dryer on the lowest setting. Hold the dryer far away from the doll and support the small flowers and berries with your hand while cleaning.

If a berry, flower, or leaf becomes loose, do not pull it off. Thread a yarn needle with matching yarn or sewing thread and secure the piece again with two or three hidden stitches through the base.

  • Wrap the doll in acid-free tissue for long storage.
  • Store the beret and baskets beside the doll, not pressed under it.
  • Keep the bird in a small pouch if transporting the set.
  • Refresh the curls by gently twisting them around your finger.

Finishing Thought

Your Berry Forest Girl Doll is complete when she has her full berry dress, long charcoal curls, tiny floral details, crossbody bag, sandals, round beret, berry baskets, and little bird friend. The many small decorations are what create the forest-girl charm, so take your time placing each berry, leaf, and flower neatly.
