This cheerful crochet turtle is designed with a soft sage-green body, a large rounded turtle muzzle, shiny black safety eyes, cream eye patches, a striped blue-and-cream shirt, tan daisy overalls, brown sandals, a warm brown shell, and sweet picnic accessories. The finished look also includes a small red flower on the head, a straw hat with a blue bow, a brown backpack, acorns, and a tiny basket.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Overview
This pattern creates a seated amigurumi turtle with long slim legs, rounded feet, a narrow neck, an oversized friendly head, and a prominent oval snout. The clothing is crocheted directly onto the body where possible, then layered with separate straps, daisies, sandals, shell, and accessories.
The turtle in the image has a handmade texture with small, tight stitches. Use a firm tension so the stuffing does not show. The head should be larger than the torso, the snout should project forward, and the shell should sit behind the overalls like a rounded backpack.
Finished Size
- Main turtle: about 12 inches tall when seated, measured from top of head to bottom of feet.
- Head width: about 4.25 inches across after stuffing.
- Body height: about 4.5 inches from neck base to bottom of overalls.
- Leg length: about 4 inches from overall hem to sandal sole.
- Shell: about 3.75 inches wide and 4.25 inches tall.
- Backpack: about 2.5 inches tall.
- Hat: about 3.25 inches across the brim.
Skill Level
Intermediate beginner to intermediate. The stitches are simple, but this design uses shaping, color changes, embroidery, and several small accessories. Read each section before starting, especially the head, snout, overalls, and shell assembly.

Gauge and Tension
Gauge is not strict, but the turtle must be crocheted tightly. With a 2.5 mm hook and sport weight cotton, 6 sc and 7 rounds should measure about 1 inch. If your stitches are loose, use a smaller hook.
For a neat image-matching finish, all visible stitches should be compact and even. The head, snout, limbs, and shell should be firmly stuffed, while the overalls and accessories should stay slightly flatter so they sit cleanly on the doll.
Important Construction Notes
- Work in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to join.
- Use a stitch marker in the first stitch of every round.
- Stuff gradually and firmly, especially the head and snout.
- Do not overstuff the neck, or the head will tilt backward.
- When changing colors for stripes, finish the last yarn-over of the previous stitch with the new color.
- The turtle sits because the legs are attached at the lower front of the body and angled downward.
- The shell is attached after the overalls so it sits behind the straps and body.

Pause here and stuff the head firmly. Shape it into a round dome with a slightly flattened lower front where the snout will be sewn. Do not close the head yet, because the neck will be attached into the opening.
Large Rounded Snout
The snout is the most important feature of this turtle. It is large, oval, and projects forward from the face. It should look like a rounded cushion attached to the lower front of the head.

Stuff the snout very firmly. Flatten the open edge slightly into an oval. Leave a long tail for sewing. Pin the snout across the lower front of the head, covering rounds 13 to 21 of the head. The widest part should point forward, not downward.
Snout Embroidery
- Use dark green or dark brown yarn.
- Make one vertical curved line down the left side of the snout, starting near the cheek and ending near the bottom edge.
- Make one matching curved line on the right side.
- Add a tiny smiling stitch under the center of the snout if desired.
- Keep the embroidery subtle, because the image shows soft curved cheek lines rather than a large mouth.
Cream Eye Patches
The turtle has two cream patches above the snout. They sit close together and create a soft oval background for the black eyes.
Make 2 Eye Patches
- Rnd 1: With cream yarn, ch 7.
- Rnd 2: Starting in second ch from hook, sc 5, 3 sc in last ch. Work along opposite side of chain, sc 4, inc in last ch. 14 sts
- Rnd 3: Inc, sc 4, inc 3 times, sc 4, inc 2 times. 20 sts
- Rnd 4: Sc 1, inc, sc 5, repeat (sc 1, inc) 3 times, sc 5, repeat (sc 1, inc) 2 times. 26 sts
- FO and leave a long sewing tail.
Sew the patches to the upper front of the head so their lower edges slightly tuck behind the top of the snout. Place them side by side with a narrow green line between them.
Eyes
- Insert one black safety eye into each cream patch before fully sewing the patch down.
- Place eyes between rounds 2 and 3 of each patch, slightly toward the inner side.
- The finished eyes should sit above the snout and close together, giving the turtle a cute gentle expression.
Neck
The neck is narrow and tall, holding the large head upright above the striped shirt. Use sage green.
- Rnd 1: Make 6 sc in MR. 6 sts
- Rnd 2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts
- Rnd 3: Repeat (sc 1, inc) around. 18 sts
- Rnd 4: Repeat (sc 2, inc) around. 24 sts
- Rnds 5-14: Sc in each st around. 24 sts
- Rnd 15: Repeat (sc 3, inc) around. 30 sts
- FO and leave a long tail.
Stuff the neck firmly but not hard. Sew the top of the neck into the remaining opening of the head. The front of the neck should sit behind the snout, not directly below it. This angle helps the head face forward like the image.

Striped Shirt Body
The body is slim at the shoulders and wider at the hips. It is worked in blue and cream stripes with green showing at the neck. The overalls will cover most of the lower body, but the striped sleeves and upper chest remain visible.

Stuff the body firmly, keeping it pear-shaped. The lower body should be round enough to support the seated position, while the upper body remains narrow under the neck.
Attach Neck to Body
Sew the neck to the top of the body through round 24. Use small stitches around the full circle. The head should lean slightly forward, as if the turtle is happily sitting at the picnic table.
Arms with Striped Sleeves
The arms are slim and hang down beside the overalls. Each arm has a green hand and a striped sleeve in the same blue-and-cream pattern as the shirt.

Stuff only the lower green hand and the bottom half of the sleeve. Leave the top lightly filled so the arms lie naturally at the sides. Sew arms to body at rounds 20-22, angled slightly downward.
Long Green Legs
The turtle has long, slim green legs extending below the overalls. The feet are rounded and visible inside brown sandals.
Make 2 Legs

For a woven look, use a yarn needle and tan yarn to make 3 horizontal running stitches around the basket. Keep them loose and evenly spaced.
Optional Shirt Embroidery
The image shows small blue anchor-like marks on the cream shirt stripes. Add this detail after the body is assembled and before attaching the bib fully, or stitch around the bib edges if the bib is already sewn.
- Use blue embroidery yarn or split yarn.
- Make tiny vertical stitches on the visible cream stripes.
- Add a small cross stitch at the bottom of each vertical stitch.
- Place 3 marks on the front chest and 2 marks on each sleeve.
- Do not crowd them; they should look delicate and handmade.
Assembly Order
- Crochet and stuff the head.
- Crochet the snout, sew it to the face, and embroider side curves.
- Make and sew the cream eye patches, then insert or attach eyes.
- Crochet the neck and body, then join them securely.
- Make arms and legs, then attach them to the body.
- Fit the overall shorts onto the lower body.
- Sew the bib and straps in place.
- Add daisies to the overalls.
- Make and attach sandals to the feet.
- Make the shell and sew it to the back.
- Add the red flower to the head.
- Make the separate hat, backpack, acorns, and basket.
Detailed Fit and Shaping Tips
The snout should sit across the lower half of the face and project forward in a smooth oval. If it points downward, remove the pins and raise the upper sewing edge by one or two head rounds before stitching permanently.
The overalls should sit snugly but not squeeze the body. If your shorts are loose, thread a tan yarn tail through the inside of the waistband and pull gently before knotting. If they are too tight, add one extra increase round before dividing the leg openings.
The shell should not cover the side straps completely. Attach it to the back center so the outer edges remain visible from the sides. A lightly stuffed shell looks closer to the image than a very hard, round shell.
The legs should hang naturally. Sew the upper leg edge flat against the lower front body, then add a few stabilizing stitches underneath the overall shorts. The feet should face forward with the sandals sitting level.

Check the face from the front before tying off any final knots. The eyes should be evenly spaced, the cream patches should match in height, and the snout should be centered. Add one small dark stitch at each side of the snout to define the soft cheek curves.
Sew all loose parts firmly with matching yarn. Hide ends inside the body, shell, or accessories. Lightly roll the head, snout, and shell between your palms to smooth the stuffing and restore the rounded shape.
- Head flower: upper left side of head.
- Eyes: close together above the snout.
- Snout: large, oval, and forward-facing.
- Shell: centered on back and slightly domed.
- Overalls: tan with visible white daisies.
- Sandals: brown straps with green toes visible.
Care Notes
Spot clean the turtle with a damp cloth and mild soap. Do not soak if you used safety eyes, buttons, or firm shaping inside the accessories. Let the piece air dry completely before storing or displaying.
If the doll is made for a small child, replace safety eyes and buttons with embroidered details. Secure every flower, strap, and accessory with extra stitches for safety.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The turtle sits upright without the head falling backward.
- The snout is large and smoothly stuffed.
- The shirt stripes are visible on the sleeves and upper chest.
- The tan overalls have straps, bib, shorts, and daisy appliques.
- The brown shell is visible behind the body.
- The sandals show the green toes at the front.
- The red head flower is sewn securely.
- The picnic accessories are shaped and displayed neatly.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Keep the turtle away from direct sunlight for long periods, because cotton yarn can fade. Store it in a breathable fabric bag or open display shelf. Avoid plastic bags in humid rooms, as trapped moisture can affect the stuffing.
To refresh the shape, gently massage the stuffed areas with clean hands. Use a yarn needle to tuck in any loose fibers. For dust, use a soft brush and work carefully around the daisies, flower, backpack flap, and sandals.
If the doll becomes flattened, reshape the head, snout, shell, and feet by pressing lightly from several sides. Let the piece rest upright after reshaping so the stuffing settles evenly again.
