Crochet Tutorial: Sweet Giraffe in a Blue Daisy Dress – Free Crochet Pattern

This sweet crochet giraffe wears a soft blue daisy dress, matching blue sandals, a pink bow, tiny white daisies near one ear, and a charming garden set of accessories. The finished scene includes a wide blue daisy sunhat, a round crossbody purse, a small basket of crocheted vegetables, and a miniature watering can for a cheerful handmade garden look.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern creates a standing amigurumi giraffe with a rounded head, long slim neck, soft yellow body, brown hooves, brown ossicones, rounded ears with yellow borders, and a white oval muzzle. The blue dress is worked with a fitted bib, shoulder straps, small buttons, and a flared skirt embroidered with white daisies.

The accessories are important to the look. The large blue hat has a flat brim and a white daisy band. The round purse has light blue and white spiral stripes with a long strap. The basket holds carrots, leafy greens, and small radishes. A tiny watering can completes the garden theme.

Finished Size

  • Giraffe height: about 11 inches from feet to top of ossicones.
  • Head width: about 3.25 inches across the cheeks.
  • Dress length: about 3.25 inches from bib top to skirt hem.
  • Hat width: about 5 inches across the brim.
  • Purse: about 1.75 inches wide.
  • Basket: about 2 inches wide, not including vegetables.

Skill Level

Advanced beginner to intermediate. The body uses basic amigurumi stitches, shaping, color changes, small pieces, embroidery, and careful sewing. The accessories use simple rounds, tubes, straps, flowers, and surface embroidery.

Materials

  • Sport weight cotton yarn or fine DK cotton yarn.
  • Yellow yarn for giraffe head, neck, arms, and legs.
  • Light brown yarn for hooves, ossicones, spots, and basket.
  • White yarn for muzzle, daisies, sandal trim, and purse stripes.
  • Sky blue yarn for dress, hat, purse, sandals, and watering can.
  • Pink yarn for bow and cheek blush.
  • Yellow yarn scraps for daisy centers.
  • Green yarn scraps for leaves and vegetable tops.
  • Orange yarn for carrots.
  • Red or deep pink yarn for radishes.
  • Two 10 mm black safety eyes.
  • Two tiny tan buttons, about 6 mm, for dress straps.
  • 2.25 mm crochet hook for the giraffe and clothing.

  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Black embroidery thread for mouth and lashes.
  • Pink embroidery thread or yarn for cheek marks.
  • Optional: pipe cleaner for watering can handle and basket handle.

Abbreviations

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible decrease over 2 stitches
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • st: stitch
  • sts: stitches
  • FO: fasten off
  • R: round or row

Gauge and Tension

Use a tight amigurumi tension so stuffing does not show through. With a 2.25 mm hook and sport weight cotton, 8 sc should measure about 1 inch across. Exact gauge is less important than firm fabric and matching proportions.

The stitches in the image are compact and even. Work the giraffe body with firm tension, the dress with medium tension, and the hat brim slightly tighter so it holds a flat, rounded shape.

Important Construction Notes

  • Work most amigurumi pieces in continuous spiral rounds unless the instruction says to join.
  • Stuff the head firmly, the neck very firmly, and the limbs lightly to medium.
  • The giraffe stands best when the legs are attached straight under the dress, slightly angled outward at the feet.
  • The muzzle sits low on the face, centered between the eyes and covering the lower front of the head.
  • The dress is crocheted as a separate garment, then fitted around the neck and upper body.
  • Use pins before sewing every piece. The final expression depends on careful placement.

FO with a long tail. Add a tiny amount of stuffing behind the muzzle. Sew it to the head from R16 to R21, centered between the eyes. The top edge should sit just under the eyes, and the bottom edge should curve toward the chin.

Facial Embroidery

  • Use black embroidery thread to stitch a vertical line down the center of the muzzle from the middle to the lower edge.
  • At the top of that line, stitch a small upside-down Y shape for the nose and mouth.
  • Add two short eyelashes at the outer side of each eye using black thread.
  • With pink yarn, embroider 2 small horizontal cheek lines on each side of the muzzle, placed just below the eyes.
  • Keep all knots hidden at the back of the head or under the muzzle edge.

Ossicones

Make 2. Use light brown yarn. These are the small horn-like pieces on top of the giraffe’s head.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (12)

Pink Inner Ear Panels

Make 2. Use pink yarn and a 2.0 mm hook.

  1. Ch 5.
  2. R1: sc in second ch from hook, hdc 2, 4 hdc in last ch, working on other side, hdc 2, sc 1. (10)
  3. R2: sl st around the edge loosely. (10)

Sew one pink panel to the center of each yellow ear. Sew the ears to the head beside the ossicones, around R8 to R12. Angle each ear outward and slightly downward, matching the friendly wide-ear look.

Neck and Body

The neck is long and slim, then widens into a small torso that will sit under the dress. Use yellow yarn.

  1. R1: 12 sc in MR. (12)
  2. R2: sc 1, inc, repeat 6 times. (18)
  3. R3-R14: sc in each st around. (18 for 12 rounds)

  5. R23: sc 2, dec, repeat 6 times. (18)
  6. R24: sc 1, dec, repeat 6 times. (12)

Stuff the torso firmly but do not overstuff the lower body. FO, close the opening, and weave in the end. Sew the open top of the neck to the head opening with small firm stitches. The head should tilt very slightly forward.

Arms

Make 2. Start with light brown for the hoof-like hands, then change to yellow for the arms.

  1. R1: With brown, 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (12)

  5. R7-R19: sc in each st around. (12 for 13 rounds)
  6. R20: sc 4, dec, repeat 2 times. (10)

Stuff the brown hand firmly and the arm lightly. Flatten the top and sc through both layers with 5 sc. FO with a long tail. Sew the arms to the sides of the upper body at R16-R18 of the body, angled downward. The hands should reach the lower edge of the dress bib.

Legs

Make 2. Start with brown for the hoof, then change to yellow. The foot is rounded at the front, and the leg is straight and slim.

  1. Ch 6 with brown.
  2. R1: Starting in second ch from hook, sc 4, 3 sc in last ch, working on the other side, sc 3, inc in last st. (12)
  3. R2: inc, sc 3, inc in next 3 sts, sc 3, inc in next 2 sts. (18)

  7. R6: Change to yellow, BLO sc in each st around. (11)
  8. R7-R24: sc in each st around. (11 for 18 rounds)

Stuff each leg firmly from the foot through the lower calf, then lightly near the top. Flatten the top and sc through both layers with 5 sc. FO with a long tail.

Sew the legs to the bottom of the body, about 5 stitches apart. The feet point forward and slightly outward. When the dress is added, only the lower legs and sandals should show clearly.

Giraffe Spots

The image shows small brown markings near the top of the head and around the ears. Make a few small flat spots with light brown yarn.

Sew 2 round spots near the base of the ossicones, 1 small spot near the left ear, and 1 or 2 tiny irregular spots down the upper side of the neck. Keep them subtle so they do not overpower the face.

Blue Daisy Dress

The dress has a fitted bib, shoulder straps with buttons, a gently flared skirt, and daisy embroidery around the lower hem. Use sky blue yarn and a 2.25 mm hook.

Dress Bodice and Skirt

Work from the top down. This garment is separate and slides onto the body before the final strap sewing.

  7. R6: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (42)

Join the back edges with a sl st to begin working in rounds. Make sure the bodice fits around the giraffe’s torso under the arms, not around the neck.

  1. R7: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st. (42)
  2. R8: Ch 2, hdc 6, 2 hdc in next st, repeat 6 times, join. (48)

  9. R18: Ch 1, crab stitch or reverse sc in each st around for a firm lower hem. Join and FO.

Front Bib Panel

Attach blue yarn to the front center of the bodice at R1. The bib sits over the chest like a square apron top.

  1. R1: Sc 14 stitches evenly across the front bodice. Turn. (14)
  2. R2-R7: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (14 for 6 rows)
  3. R8: Ch 1, sc 1, dec, sc 8, dec, sc 1. (12)
  4. R9: Ch 1, sc in each st across. (12)

Shoulder Straps

Make 2. Attach yarn to the top left corner of the bib.

  1. Ch 18.
  2. Sc in second ch from hook and across. (17)
  3. FO with a sewing tail.

Repeat on the right side. Cross or lay the straps straight over the shoulders and sew to the back bodice. In the image the buttons sit on the front strap area, so sew one small button at each top corner of the bib.

Dress Daisy Embroidery

The dress has a large white daisy at the chest and several daisies around the skirt hem. Use white, yellow, and green yarn scraps.

Chest Daisy

  • Use yellow yarn to make 6 small straight stitches in a circle at the center of the bib.
  • Use white yarn to make 8 short petal stitches around the yellow center.
  • Keep the flower about 0.55 inch wide.

Skirt Hem Daisies

Make 5 embroidered daisies around the lower front skirt. Place them across R14-R16 of the skirt, leaving even spacing.

  • For each daisy center, make 5 tiny yellow satin stitches.
  • For each flower, make 7 or 8 white lazy-daisy stitches around the center.
  • Use green yarn to make 2 curved stem stitches under each flower.
  • Add 1 small green leaf on each side of the stem with a single detached chain stitch.

The embroidered flowers should look soft and slightly raised, like the daisies shown along the bottom of the blue dress.

Blue Sandals

The giraffe wears blue sandals over brown hooves with white trim and small yellow flowers at the sides.

Sandal Sole Edging

Make 2. Use blue yarn.

  1. Ch 13.
  2. R1: Sc in second ch from hook, sc 10, 3 sc in last ch, working on other side, sc 10, inc in last st. (26)
  3. R2: Sl st around the entire sole outline. FO with a long tail.

Small Head Daisies

Make 2 white daisies for the area near one ear. Use white yarn for petals and yellow for centers.

  1. With yellow yarn, 6 sc in MR, join, FO. (6)
  2. Join white yarn to any stitch.
  3. Petal round: ch 3, sl st in same st, sl st in next st, repeat around until you have 6 petals.
  4. FO with a long tail.

Sew the daisies beside the left ear, near the base of one ossicone. Let one flower overlap the ear slightly for the same garden-party style.

Large Blue Daisy Sunhat

The hat is a separate accessory placed beside the giraffe in the image. It has a round crown, a broad flat brim, and a daisy band.

Hat Crown

Use sky blue yarn and a 2.25 mm hook. Work in joined rounds for a clean circular top.

Flatten the brim with your hands. The brim should spread wide and even. Light steam blocking can help it lie flat, but do not press acrylic yarn with direct heat.

Hat Daisy Band

Use white and yellow yarn to make 9 small daisies. Each daisy is made like the head daisies but slightly smaller.

  1. With yellow, 5 sc in MR, join, FO.
  2. Join white, ch 2, sl st in same st, repeat in each of the 5 stitches.

Place the carrots, radishes, and leafy greens inside the basket. Sew or tack them to the basket base if the toy will be handled often.

Mini Watering Can

The watering can is beige with blue accents and a small spout. Use beige yarn for the can body and blue for the top trim.

Can Body

  1. R1: With beige, 6 sc in MR. (6)

  1. With yellow, ch 10.
  2. Sl st in second ch from hook and across. (9)
  3. Attach 3 short brown strands to the end and trim evenly.

Sew the tail to the back of the body before dressing the giraffe. Let it sit under the skirt so only a small tuft peeks out, or keep it fully hidden.

Placement Guide for Matching the Image

  • Eyes: Place between R15 and R16 of the head, 9 stitches apart.
  • Muzzle: Center under the eyes from R16 to R21.
  • Ossicones: Place between R4 and R8, slightly behind the forehead curve.
  • Ears: Place around R8 to R12, angled outward.
  • Bow: Place at the top front, slightly to the right side.
  • Head daisies: Place near the left ear and left ossicone.
  • Dress bib: Centered on the front chest, ending just below the neck.
  • Skirt daisies: Spread across the lower front hem, not around the entire back.
  • Arms: Hang down at the sides, with brown hands near the lower bib.
  • Legs: Straight under the skirt, feet forward.

Shaping Tips

For a smooth head, stuff in small pieces instead of one large lump. Push stuffing into the cheek area with the back of your hook. Keep the neck extra firm, because the large head needs strong support.

For the dress, do not pull the skirt stitches too tightly. The skirt should flare gently, with a soft bell shape. If your skirt is too narrow, add one extra increase round before the hem. If it is too wide, skip R23 of the hat-style increase logic and keep the skirt at 54 stitches.

For the hat, keep the crown rounded but not stuffed. The brim should be flat and wide. The daisy band should sit on the crown just above the brim, like a decorative flower garland.

Detailed Stitch Notes for Beginners

  • Invisible decrease: Insert hook into the front loop of the next stitch, then into the front loop of the following stitch. Yarn over and pull through both front loops, yarn over again, and pull through both loops on the hook.
  • Color change: Start the last stitch of the old color, but finish the final yarn-over with the new color. This keeps the color line cleaner.
  • Joined rounds: When making the dress, hat, and purse, join with a sl st to the first stitch of the round, then chain before starting the next round.
  • Surface embroidery: Use short stitches and do not pull tightly. Tight embroidery can dent the crochet fabric.

Making the Accessories Look Balanced

The accessories should feel slightly oversized and playful. The hat is wider than the giraffe’s head, the purse is round and compact, the basket is small but full, and the watering can is tiny. This scale gives the finished piece the same cute garden-table look as the reference image.

When arranging the full scene, place the hat on the giraffe’s left side, the basket near the right shoulder area, the purse near the lower left side, and the watering can near the right foot. These props do not need to be attached unless you want a fixed display piece.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the face before tying final knots. The eyes should look level, the muzzle should be centered, and the mouth line should be straight down the middle. Add the small black lashes last, because they instantly create the gentle sweet expression.

Sew all pieces with matching yarn tails and small ladder stitches. After sewing, gently roll the head and body between your hands to smooth the stuffing. Trim embroidery ends carefully and hide them deep inside the head or body.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if you used safety eyes, buttons, or pipe cleaners.
  • Let the piece air dry flat on a towel.
  • Keep the hat brim flat while drying.
  • Brush away dust with a soft dry paintbrush.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is firmly stuffed and supported by the neck.
  • The muzzle is centered and lightly raised.
  • The ears are symmetrical and angled outward.
  • The bow is secure between the ossicones.
  • The dress bib sits flat on the chest.
  • The skirt flares evenly around the body.
  • The daisy embroidery is evenly spaced.
  • The sandals are attached at the front and ankle.
  • The hat brim lies flat and round.
  • The basket, purse, and watering can are neat and proportional.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the giraffe away from strong sunlight to keep the blue dress and yellow body bright. If the piece is used as decor, place it in a clean dry area where the hat brim and bow will not be crushed.

For long-term storage, wrap the giraffe and accessories in acid-free tissue or a clean cotton cloth. Do not seal damp crochet in plastic. Make sure every piece is fully dry before storing to prevent odor or mildew.

If the dress or hat becomes slightly misshapen, reshape it gently with your fingers. For cotton yarn, a light mist of water can help the brim and skirt settle back into place. Let everything dry naturally.
