Crochet Tutorial: Purple Spring Bee Doll – Free Crochet Pattern

This Purple Spring Bee Doll is a sweet garden-inspired crochet doll with long brown textured hair, a flower-and-bee crown, a cream dress with lavender puff sleeves, embroidered spring flowers, a lavender shoulder bag with a bee patch, matching shoes, removable slippers, a round lavender sunhat, and tiny forest mushrooms. The finished doll is designed as a detailed display amigurumi with soft pastel colors and many stitched floral accents.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern recreates the doll shown in the image as closely as possible using structured amigurumi shaping, firm stuffing, smooth single crochet fabric, layered clothing, and surface embroidery. The doll has a large rounded head, slim neck, narrow body, straight legs, small arms, lavender puff sleeves, cream bodice, wide layered skirt, and detailed accessories.

The main doll is worked in continuous rounds. The dress is crocheted partly onto the body and partly as separate layers so the cream apron skirt, lavender under-skirt, and white scalloped lace edge sit with the same full shape as the reference. Hair is built from a fitted cap plus many ribbed strands sewn around the head.

Finished Size

  • Doll height: about 12.5 inches from shoes to top of head.
  • Width across skirt: about 7 inches when gently spread.
  • Head width: about 3.25 inches.
  • Hat diameter: about 5.75 inches.
  • Bag size: about 2 inches wide and 2.25 inches tall.
  • Mushrooms: about 1.25 to 2 inches tall.

Skill Level

Intermediate. A confident beginner can complete the base doll, but the embroidery, hair placement, layered skirt, shoes, hat, bees, and floral crown require patience. Read through the full pattern before starting so the color changes and surface details line up correctly.

Materials

  • Sport weight or light DK cotton yarn in skin tone, cream, lavender, white, brown, pastel green, yellow, black, red, soft pink, lilac, pale purple, pale yellow, and small amounts of floral colors.
  • 2.25 mm crochet hook for the doll and clothing.
  • 2.0 mm crochet hook for flowers, bees, embroidery bases, and small details.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • 10 mm black safety eyes or glossy black sew-on eyes.
  • Black embroidery thread for eyelashes and bee stripes.
  • Pink embroidery thread or blush powder for cheeks.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Sewing pins.
  • Small amount of cardboard or plastic canvas for the bag and hat brim, optional.
  • Fabric glue, optional, only for securing tiny flower centers after sewing.

Abbreviations Used

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • inc: 2 single crochet in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible decrease over 2 stitches
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • sk: skip
  • st/sts: stitch/stitches
  • R: round or row
  • FO: fasten off

Gauge

With 2.25 mm hook and sport cotton, 8 sc across and 9 rounds tall should measure about 1 inch. Exact gauge is less important than tight, even stitches. The fabric should be firm enough that stuffing does not show through the skin, dress, or hat.

Important Construction Notes

  • Work the doll body in continuous rounds unless a joined round is stated.
  • Stuff the head firmly, the neck very firmly, the body medium-firm, and the arms lightly.
  • Use invisible decreases on all amigurumi parts for a smooth finish.
  • When making the skirt, keep the wrong side facing inward so the outer surface stays neat.
  • Hair strands should be sewn in layers from the lower back hairline upward toward the crown.
  • Embroidery is done after the dress is complete so flowers sit clearly on the cream skirt and bag.

Color Layout

  • Skin: head, neck, arms, hands, legs above socks.
  • Cream: dress bodice, cream apron skirt, lace trim accents, shoe cuffs, mushroom stems.
  • Lavender: puff sleeves, under-skirt, waist trim, shoulder strap, bag, shoes, hat.
  • Brown: hair cap and long curled strands.
  • White: flower crown blossoms, lace scallops, mushroom spots, daisy petals.
  • Yellow and black: bees on crown, bodice, bag, and skirt.
  • Pastels: embroidered flowers, leaves, small crown blossoms, shoe flowers.

  18. R27: sc 4, dec, repeat 6 times. (30)
  19. R28: sc 3, dec, repeat 6 times. (24)

Insert safety eyes between R17 and R18, about 10 stitches apart. Do not place them too low; the doll in the image has a calm face with the eyes sitting slightly above the center of the head. Stuff the head firmly, shaping the cheeks with your fingers.

  1. R29: sc 2, dec, repeat 6 times. (18)
  2. R30: sc 1, dec, repeat 6 times. (12)

Do not close the opening if you want to continue directly into the neck and body. If making the head separately, FO with a long tail and sew it later to the neck.

Face Details

Use black embroidery thread for the eyelashes. Make three small lashes at the outer edge of each eye. The longest lash should angle slightly upward. The second lash should point outward. The third lash should be short and downward.

  • For the nose, use skin tone or pale peach thread and make 4 horizontal stitches across 3 stitches between the eyes, about 2 rounds below the eye line.
  • For cheeks, add soft pink blush under each eye, about 2 stitches wide.
  • For the mouth, make one tiny curved stitch using pale pink thread, centered 3 rounds below the nose.

Neck and Upper Body

Continue with skin tone from the head opening. The neck is narrow but firm, because it supports the large head and hair. Stuff the neck very firmly as you go.

  1. R31: sc around. (12)
  2. R32: sc 1, inc, repeat 6 times. (18)
  3. R33: sc around. (18)

  2. R36: sc 3, inc, repeat 6 times. (30)
  3. R37-R40: sc around. (30 for 4 rounds)
  4. R41: sc 4, inc, repeat 6 times. (36)
  5. R42-R45: sc around. (36 for 4 rounds)
  6. R46: sc 5, inc, repeat 6 times. (42)
  7. R47: sc around. (42)

Change to lavender for the waist band.

  1. R48: BLO sc around. (42)
  2. R49: sc around. (42)

Stuff the upper body firmly enough to hold shape, but do not overstuff the waist because the skirt must flare smoothly from this point.

Lower Body and Hip Base

The hip base gives the skirt structure and provides a secure place to attach the legs. Continue with cream or skin tone hidden under the dress.

  1. R50: BLO sc 5, dec, repeat 6 times. (36)
  2. R51: sc around. (36)
  3. R52: sc 4, dec, repeat 6 times. (30)
  4. R53: sc around. (30)
  5. R54: sc 3, dec, repeat 6 times. (24)
  6. R55: sc 2, dec, repeat 6 times. (18)
  7. R56: sc 1, dec, repeat 6 times. (12)
  8. R57: dec around. (6)

FO and close the opening. This lower section will be mostly hidden by the full dress, but keeping it firm helps the doll sit and stand better for display.

Legs

Make 2. Start with lavender for the shoe sole. The legs are straight, narrow, and visible below the skirt. The socks are cream with lavender shoe straps near the feet.

  2. R9: sc around. (16)
  3. R10: sc 6, dec, sc 6, dec. (14)

Change to skin tone for the leg.

  1. R11: BLO sc around. (14)
  2. R12-R28: sc around. (14 for 17 rounds)

Stuff the foot firmly. Stuff the lower leg lightly, keeping the leg slim. FO the first leg. Make the second leg the same, but do not fasten off if you prefer joining directly. For this doll, sew the legs separately under the hip base about 6 stitches apart so they hang straight down from the skirt.

Sock Ruffle

Join cream yarn to the front loop of R8 on each shoe. Ch 1, then work: sc 1, ch 2, sc 1 in next st, repeat around. Sl st to join and FO. This creates the small cream cuff visible above the lavender shoes.

Shoe Strap

Using lavender yarn, ch 10 for each strap. Sew one end to the inner side of the shoe at R7, cross over the top of the foot, and sew the other end to the outer side. Add a tiny white flower to the outside of each shoe.

Arms

Make 2. Start with skin tone. The hands are small and rounded, and the upper arms disappear into large lavender puff sleeves.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: sc 1, inc, repeat 3 times. (9)
  3. R3-R5: sc around. (9 for 3 rounds)
  4. R6: sc 1, dec, repeat 3 times. (6)
  5. R7-R18: sc around. (6 for 12 rounds)

Stuff only the lower half of each arm very lightly. Flatten the top and crochet 3 sc through both layers to close. FO with a long tail for sewing.

Lavender Puff Sleeves

Make 2. The sleeves are rounded, oversized, and gathered at both ends. Use lavender yarn and 2.25 mm hook.

  1. R1: 8 sc in MR. (8)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (16)
  3. R3: sc 1, inc, repeat 8 times. (24)
  4. R4-R7: sc around. (24 for 4 rounds)
  5. R8: sc 1, dec, repeat 8 times. (16)
  6. R9: BLO sc around. (16)
  7. R10: sc 2, dec, repeat 4 times. (12)

Insert the arm through the sleeve so the hand extends from the narrow opening. Sew the top of the sleeve to the dress shoulder at R36-R38 of the body. The sleeves should angle slightly downward and outward, matching the relaxed pose in the image.

Sleeve Cuff Texture

Join lavender yarn to the front loop of R9. Work: sl st, ch 2, sl st in next st, repeat around. This makes the gathered bobble-like edge at the lower sleeve.

Cream Bodice Neck Trim

Join lavender yarn to the front loops left at R35 around the neckline. Work one round of sc evenly around the neck. Then work a second round: ch 2, sl st in next st, repeat around. FO and weave in ends.

This creates the lavender scalloped collar seen around the top of the cream bodice.

Dress Skirt Base

The skirt has two main layers: a lavender lower skirt and a cream apron-style top skirt with floral embroidery. The lavender layer sits underneath and shows clearly at the bottom.

Lavender Under-Skirt

Join lavender yarn to the front loops of body R48. Hold the doll upside down so the skirt grows downward toward the legs.

  1. R1: Ch 2, dc inc in each front loop around. Sl st to join. (84 dc)
  2. R2: Ch 2, dc around. Sl st to join. (84)
  3. R3: Ch 2, dc 6, dc inc, repeat 12 times. Sl st to join. (96)
  4. R4-R6: Ch 2, dc around. Sl st to join. (96 for 3 rounds)
  5. R7: Ch 1, sc around. Sl st to join. (96)

FO lavender. The skirt should flare gently and reach just above the knees.

White Lace Edge Under Lavender Skirt

Join white or cream yarn to the last round of the lavender skirt. Work: sc 1, sk 1, 5 dc in next st, sk 1, repeat around. Adjust the final repeat if needed by skipping only one stitch before joining. FO neatly.

Cream Apron Skirt

The cream apron skirt sits on top of the lavender layer and is slightly shorter so the purple band remains visible below it. Join cream yarn into the same waist area, just above the lavender skirt.

  1. R1: Ch 2, dc inc in each st around the waist. Sl st to join. (84)
  2. R2: Ch 2, dc 6, inc, repeat 12 times. Sl st to join. (96)
  3. R3-R5: Ch 2, dc around. Sl st to join. (96 for 3 rounds)

FO cream. Block the skirt gently with your fingers. The cream layer should curve outward and rest above the lavender layer, leaving a visible lavender border.

Cream Skirt Decorative Edge

Join lavender yarn to the bottom edge of the cream skirt. Work: sc 2, ch 3, sl st in first ch, sc 2, repeat around. FO. This gives the lower cream skirt a soft dotted lavender border like the small trim in the image.

Lavender Waist Ruffle

Join lavender yarn around the waist over the top of the skirt layers. Work one round of sc. On the next round, work: ch 3, sl st in next st, repeat around. Keep the ruffle small and neat so it frames the bodice without covering the embroidered front.

Bodice Embroidery

The cream bodice has small bee and flower details across the lower front. Use a tapestry needle and pastel embroidery yarn or separated cotton strands.

  • Mark the center front of the bodice.
  • Embroider two tiny bees using yellow oval stitches, black stripe stitches, and black antenna stitches.
  • Add green stems with vertical straight stitches over 2 rounds.
  • Add pink, yellow, and lavender flower knots along the lower bodice.
  • Keep the embroidery within an area about 16 stitches wide and 4 rounds tall.

For each tiny bee on the bodice, stitch one yellow oval over 2 stitches, add two black horizontal stripes, then make two short white wing stitches above the body.

Cream Skirt Floral Embroidery

The apron skirt is heavily decorated with small spring flowers near the lower front edge. Keep the design wide but low, leaving the upper cream skirt mostly plain.

Flower Stems

  • Use pastel green thread.
  • Make 15 to 18 stems across the front half of the cream skirt.
  • Each stem should be 2 to 4 stitches tall.
  • Angle a few stems slightly left and right for a natural garden look.

Small Flowers

  • For pink flowers, make 5 small straight stitches around one center point.
  • For yellow flowers, make 4 tiny detached chain stitches.
  • For purple flowers, make French knots or small satin stitches.
  • For rose-style flowers, coil 3 short stitches in a loose circle.
  • Add green leaf stitches beside every second flower.

Do not cover the entire skirt. The image shows a decorated band of flowers near the lower front with cream fabric still visible above. Keep the embroidery delicate and scattered.

Lavender Shoulder Bag

The bag is a small lavender crossbody purse worn from the left shoulder to the right hip. It has a cream flap with a yellow bee and floral embroidery along the bottom edge.

Bag Body

Use lavender yarn and 2.25 mm hook. Work in rows.

  1. R1: Ch 13. Sc in second ch from hook and across. (12)
  2. R2-R12: Ch 1, turn, sc across. (12 for 11 rows)
  3. R13: Ch 1, turn, sc around the entire rectangle, placing 2 sc in each corner. Sl st to join.

FO and weave in ends. Fold the lower 7 rows upward to form a pocket. Sew the side seams with lavender yarn, leaving the top open.

  4. R7: Ch 1, turn, dec, sc 6, dec. (8)

FO. Sew the straight top edge of the flap to the back top edge of the lavender bag. Let the shaped edge fold over the front.

Bag Strap

With lavender yarn, ch 72. Starting in second ch from hook, sl st in each ch across. FO. Sew one end to the upper left corner of the bag and the other end to the upper right corner. Place the strap diagonally across the doll’s chest and tack it at the shoulder so it stays in position.

Bee Patch on Bag

With yellow yarn and 2.0 mm hook, make 6 sc in MR. Sl st to join and FO, leaving a long tail. Sew this yellow circle to the cream flap. Embroider 2 black stripes, 2 black antennae, and 2 small white wings. Add 5 green stems and 5 tiny pastel flowers under the bee.

FO and close. Embroider a black line down the center, a black head at one end, and 3 black dots on each wing.

Bee Appliques for Dress and Skirt

The doll has small bee details on the bodice, bag, and skirt. Use this applique for the larger bee on the cream skirt or pocket area.

  1. With yellow yarn, ch 5.
  2. Starting in second ch from hook, sc 3, 3 sc in last ch.
  3. Work on opposite side, sc 2, inc. Sl st to join. (10)
  4. FO with a long tail.

Embroider black stripes across the yellow oval. Add two short antennae. For wings, use white yarn and make two lazy daisy stitches above the body. Sew the bee to the right side of the cream skirt or bag flap.

Small Skirt Pocket Option

The image shows the bag sitting against the dress, but you can add a small cream pocket-shaped patch under the bee if you want the bee detail to stand out more.

  1. With cream yarn, ch 9.
  2. R1: Sc in second ch from hook and across. (8)
  3. R2-R5: Ch 1, turn, sc across. (8)
  4. R6: Ch 1, turn, dec, sc 4, dec. (6)

FO and sew to the lower right cream skirt. Embroider flowers along the bottom edge, then sew the bee above them.

Dress Sleeve Flower Dots

The sleeve edges in the image include tiny floral dots near the cream bodice. Add these after attaching the sleeves.

  • Use pale pink yarn to make 3 small knots along the seam of each sleeve.
  • Add one green straight stitch beside each knot.
  • Keep the dots close to the shoulder seam so the puff sleeve stays mostly lavender.

Body Assembly

  1. Sew the head securely to the neck if you made it separately. Add extra stitches at the back of the neck to prevent wobbling.
  2. Sew arms with sleeves to each side of the upper body between R36 and R39.
  3. Sew legs to the underside of the hip base, spaced evenly so they hang straight below the skirt.
  4. Adjust the skirt layers so the cream layer sits on top and the lavender layer shows below.
  5. Sew the bag strap over the left shoulder and let the bag rest at the right side of the skirt.
  6. Pin the hair, crown, and accessories before final sewing.

Hair Placement Guide

Place the hair cap so the front edge sits just above the embroidered eyelashes. The sides should cover the upper ears area, even though ears are not visible in this design. The back should reach near the nape of the neck.

  • Sew bangs first, centered over the forehead.
  • Sew long side strands next, placing 8 to 10 strands on each side.
  • Add back strands last to fill gaps.
  • Let a few curls rest over the shoulders and sleeves.
  • Do not sew every inch of each strand; tack the top and one lower point so the hair keeps movement.

Optional Hidden Support

If the doll will be displayed standing, insert a pipe cleaner or soft doll armature inside each leg before sewing them to the body. Bend the ends inward so no sharp point touches the crochet fabric. Do not use wire if the doll is intended for a small child.

Detailed Flower Embroidery Placement

For the most accurate look, keep the largest floral embroidery on the cream skirt and the bag. The bodice should have only a small band of flowers. The shoes should have small daisy decorations, and the crown should have three larger flowers at the top center.

  • Center skirt: place pink and lavender flowers in a low curved line.
  • Left skirt: add 4 green stems, 2 yellow flowers, and 2 purple knots.
  • Right skirt: add the bee patch, 5 flowers, and several leaves.
  • Bodice: add two bees and 6 tiny flowers.
  • Bag: add one bee, 5 flowers, and green stems.

Lavender Trim Around Cream Apron

To create the raised lavender edge above the cream apron skirt, join lavender yarn to the waist seam and surface slip stitch around the full waist. Then work a second line of surface slip stitch at the bottom of the bodice, just above the skirt flare.

These two lavender lines frame the cream bodice and help the dress match the image. Keep the stitches loose so they do not pull the waist inward too much.

Optional White Lace Underlayer

If you want the lace edge fuller, add a second lace round under the lavender skirt. Join cream yarn behind the first lace round. Work: ch 4, sk 2, sl st in next st, repeat around. This creates small loops that peek below the scalloped edge.

Making the Doll Safe for Display or Gentle Play

This doll includes many small flowers, bees, mushrooms, and embroidered accents. For display, sew each detail securely with several passes of thread. For a child-safe version, replace safety eyes with embroidered eyes and omit loose accessories such as the slippers, mushrooms, and hat ties.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  • Check that both eyes are level before finishing the face.
  • Add eyelashes after the hair cap is sewn so they are not hidden.
  • Blush the cheeks lightly with pink powder or embroidery.
  • Sew the crown only after all flowers and bees are attached to the vine.
  • Tack the bag strap at the shoulder and waist so it does not slide.
  • Steam-shape the hat brim gently if needed, but do not press the doll face.

Care Notes

Spot clean the doll with cool water and mild soap. Avoid soaking because the embroidered flowers, bees, hair strands, and hat brim may lose shape. Let the doll air dry flat on a towel. Reshape the skirt, sleeves, and hair curls while damp.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The cream skirt sits above the lavender skirt.
  • The white lace edge is visible under the lavender hem.
  • The puff sleeves are round and evenly stuffed.
  • The hair frames both sides of the face.
  • The flower crown includes flowers, leaves, and two bees.
  • The lavender bag crosses the chest diagonally.
  • The shoes include straps and small daisies.
  • The hat has a round crown, wide brim, band, bow, and ties.
  • The mushrooms have white stems and spotted caps.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the doll away from direct sunlight to protect the soft lavender, cream, and pastel embroidery colors. Keep it in a dry place with airflow. If dust collects on the hair or skirt, use a soft brush and brush gently in the direction of the stitches.

Do not machine wash this doll. The small bees, flowers, bag, slippers, hat, and mushrooms are best preserved by careful hand cleaning only. If the skirt flattens during storage, lift the layers with your fingers and reshape the scalloped lace edge.

For long-term display, place the accessories beside the doll just as shown in the image: mushrooms on one side, lavender hat near the upper right, slippers near the lower right, and the bag resting across the front of the dress.
