Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written for a knitted beagle worked mostly in the round, with shaped pieces sewn together after stuffing. The finished toy is designed to look like the picture: a playful beagle lying forward on its belly with front paws stretched out, back legs angled behind, a rounded muzzle, long soft ears, and picnic accessories placed beside the body.

The dog is made with medium-weight yarn and small needles so the stitches stay firm and the stuffing does not show. The sweater is knitted directly as a separate fitted tube and slipped over the body before final assembly, then decorated with yellow embroidered daisies. The bag, basket, sandwich, bow, shoes, and picnic cushion are all small separate pieces.

Finished Size

  • Beagle length: about 13 in / 33 cm from nose to tail tip.
  • Body height: about 4 in / 10 cm at the sweater section.
  • Head width: about 4.25 in / 11 cm across the cheeks.
  • Front leg length: about 4.25 in / 11 cm each.
  • Ear length: about 4.75 in / 12 cm each.
  • Red picnic cushion: about 4.75 in / 12 cm wide.
  • Yellow shoulder bag: about 2 in / 5 cm wide.
  • Basket: about 2 in / 5 cm wide.
  • Sandwich: about 1.5 in / 4 cm wide.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in cream white, warm brown, sky blue, light blue, yellow, red, tan, white, black, pink, green, tomato red, and a small amount of golden yellow.
  • US 3 / 3.25 mm double-pointed needles or circular needles for magic loop.
  • US 2 / 2.75 mm needles for small details such as flowers, straps, and bag flap.
  • Two 12 mm dark brown safety eyes with washers.
  • One 10 mm black safety nose, or black yarn for an embroidered nose.
  • Polyester fiberfill stuffing.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Small amount of black embroidery thread for the mouth, paw lines, and bee detail.
  • Two tiny white beads or French knots for bee wings, optional.
  • Pom-pom maker or fork for the white pom-pom on the red cushion.
  • Removable stitch markers or waste yarn.

Gauge

Gauge: 6 stitches and 8 rounds = 1 in / 2.5 cm in stockinette stitch using US 3 / 3.25 mm needles. Exact gauge is less important than a firm knitted fabric. If your stitches look loose, go down one needle size.

The toy in the picture has visible knitted texture with medium-thick, tidy stitches. Work firmly, but do not pull so tightly that shaping becomes stiff. The sweater should fit smoothly around the body without squeezing the stuffing.

Construction Notes

The beagle is built in separate pieces for the best match to the image. The long body is horizontal and gently tapered toward the tail. The head is rounded with a cream muzzle and brown side patches. The ears are long flat oval pieces sewn down the sides of the head so they hang naturally.

The front legs are sewn under the chest and angle forward. The back legs are slimmer and angle backward from the body, giving the toy a relaxed picnic pose. The sweater is a short blue-and-cream striped tube with a yellow trim line and embroidered daisies.

  • Stuff each piece firmly but softly. The beagle should hold its shape while still looking cuddly.
  • Use mattress stitch for neat seams on flat pieces.
  • Use whipstitch for attaching small accessories.
  • Pin every piece before sewing so the lying pose stays balanced.
  • Leave yarn tails long enough for sewing when pieces are finished.

  10. Sew the pink bow on the top of the head between the ears.
  11. Place the yellow bag strap around the neck and across the chest. Sew the bag lightly to the body so it stays in position.
  12. Place the red cushion, basket, and sandwich beside the beagle as separate display accessories.

Detailed Knitting Notes for the Beagle Pose

The toy in the image has a relaxed picnic pose rather than a standing posture. To copy that shape, do not attach the legs straight downward. The front legs need to come out from the lower chest and point ahead. The back legs should be placed near the hips and angled behind the sweater area.

When sewing the head, use several passes of yarn around the neck join. A firm neck join is important because the head is larger than the body opening. Add a little extra stuffing at the front chest before closing the seam to support the head.

  • Pin the front legs first and check that both paws rest on the table.
  • Pin the head second and check that the nose points slightly forward and down.
  • Pin the ears last because they help hide the head seam.
  • Do not overstuff the ears. They should stay flat and soft.
  • Flatten the body underside gently while stuffing so the beagle does not roll sideways.

Color Placement Guide

Accurate color placement is what gives the toy the same character as the image. The main body is cream with warm brown patches. The head has a cream center, brown side patches, and brown floppy ears. The sweater is mainly blue with cream stripes and yellow flowers.

  • Cream: main body, muzzle, center face, front legs, back legs, tail tip, and sandwich bread center.
  • Warm brown: ears, face patches, body patches, tail base, and bread crust.
  • Sky blue: sweater, short sleeves, and shoes.
  • Cream stripe: wide sweater bands.
  • Yellow: sweater daisies, bag, bag strap, bee stripes, and cheese filling.
  • Pink: head bow.
  • Red: picnic cushion and tomato filling.
  • Tan: picnic basket.
  • Black: nose, mouth, paw lines, bee body, and antennae.

Beginner-Friendly Tips

This pattern has many small pieces, but each one is simple when worked step by step. If you are newer to toy knitting, finish all the larger pieces first. Then make the small accessories as a reward after the dog’s body is complete.

  • Use stitch markers at the beginning of every round.
  • Count stitches after every increase or decrease round.
  • Stuff small pieces using the blunt end of a pencil or chopstick.
  • Keep the seam side of each leg facing downward.
  • Use pins generously before sewing.
  • Take a photo from the front before final stitching to check symmetry.

Finishing the Sweater Details

After the sweater is on the body, smooth the fabric with your fingers. The blue stripes should sit evenly around the dog’s middle. If the sweater shifts, secure it with hidden stitches under the belly and behind the front legs.

  1. Thread a tapestry needle with matching blue yarn.
  2. Use tiny horizontal stitches to tack the sweater at the underside.
  3. Thread yellow yarn and embroider the daisies on the visible upper sweater area.
  4. Thread cream yarn and neaten any stripe joins if needed.
  5. Add a final yellow line along the lower sweater ridge if you want the trim to stand out more.

Facial Expression Guide

The face should look friendly and soft. The eyes sit high enough to make the head cute, while the rounded muzzle keeps the beagle recognizable. Place the ears only after the eyes and muzzle are finished.

  • Eyes should be level and about 10 stitches apart.
  • The muzzle should sit centered below the eyes and cover the lower third of the face.
  • The nose should sit at the front center of the muzzle.
  • The mouth should be small and gentle, not too wide.
  • The brown eye patch should frame one eye and extend toward the cheek.

Making the Accessories Look Like the Photo

The accessories are part of the full picnic scene. The yellow bee bag hangs on the dog, while the red cushion, basket, and sandwich sit nearby. Make these pieces firm enough to hold their shape but still soft like knitted toys.

  • For the red cushion, flatten the piece after stuffing and sew through the center once before adding the pom-pom.
  • For the basket, add embroidered woven lines so it does not look like a plain box.
  • For the sandwich, let the green lettuce layer peek out unevenly.
  • For the bee bag, keep the strap long and thin so it drapes naturally.
  • For the pink bow, sew only the center to the head so the two loops stay lifted.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check all joins before trimming yarn tails. The head, legs, and tail should be firmly attached because these areas receive the most handling. Use matching yarn for hidden seams and small backstitches for stronger joins.

  • Brush the ears lightly with your fingers so they hang flat.
  • Add final toe lines on the front paws using black thread.
  • Reinforce the nose with extra black stitches if using embroidered yarn instead of a safety nose.
  • Secure the bag strap at the shoulder with one hidden stitch so it does not slip.
  • Place the sandwich and basket close to the front paws for the picnic display.

Care Notes

Spot clean the finished beagle with cool water and mild soap. Do not soak if safety eyes, beads, or layered accessories were used. Gently press with a towel and reshape while damp.

  • Air dry flat away from direct sunlight.
  • Do not machine wash if the toy has safety eyes or sewn accessories.
  • Keep small accessories away from children under 3 years old.
  • If gifting to a baby, embroider the eyes instead of using plastic safety eyes.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the knitted picnic beagle in a dry place where the accessories will not be crushed. If displaying on a shelf, place the dog in its lying pose and keep the bag strap relaxed so it does not stretch over time.

  • Remove dust with a soft brush or lint roller used gently.
  • Refresh flattened stuffing by gently squeezing the body back into shape.
  • Keep away from strong sunlight to protect the blue, red, and yellow yarn colors.
  • Store the sandwich and basket in a small fabric pouch if they are not displayed.
  • Check sewn seams occasionally and repair loose stitches with matching yarn.

Your Picnic Beagle is now complete, dressed in a cheerful daisy sweater with a bow, bee bag, blue flower shoes, and a full set of knitted picnic accessories. Arrange the beagle beside the red cushion, basket, and sandwich to create the same cozy outdoor picnic scene shown in the image.
