Knitting Tutorial: Strawberry Bee Calf – Free Knitting Pattern

This sweet knitted calf is designed with a creamy textured head, warm caramel ears and hooves, brown overalls, soft cream sleeves, a pink embroidered muzzle, shiny black eyes, a tiny strawberry on the head, a striped bee, a floral crossbody bag, a beret with carrot detail, and a pair of tiny removable sandals. The finished toy has a cozy handmade look with soft shaping, rounded limbs, and charming garden-inspired accessories.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern creates a seated calf plush with a large rounded head, small body, short rounded legs, gently curved arms, oval ears, raised cream head texture, and a full outfit inspired by the image. The calf is knitted in separate shaped pieces, lightly stuffed, then sewn together with careful angles so the finished doll sits upright.

The main calf uses cream yarn for the face, head, body base, arms, socks, and upper legs. Warm caramel brown is used for the ears, hooves, overalls, straps, head side patches, and small outfit accents. Pink embroidery forms the square muzzle. Small duplicate-stitch motifs create acorns on the sweater front, while tiny knitted and embroidered details create the strawberry, bee, flowers, bag, beret, and sandals.

Finished Size

  • Finished height while seated: about 11.5 inches from bottom to top of head.
  • Finished head width: about 5.25 inches across the cheeks, not including ears.
  • Finished body height: about 5 inches from neck to seated base.
  • Finished ear length: about 2 inches each.
  • Finished beret width: about 4.25 inches.
  • Finished sandals: about 2.25 inches long each.

Skill Level

Confident beginner to intermediate. The shaping is simple, but the pattern includes many small decorative pieces. Beginners can complete it by working slowly, counting every row, and using removable stitch markers before sewing.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in warm cream, approximately 160 yards.
  • Worsted weight yarn in caramel brown, approximately 100 yards.
  • Worsted weight yarn in soft beige, approximately 70 yards.
  • Small amounts of pale pink, red, green, yellow, black, white, rust, dark brown, mustard, and floral embroidery colors.
  • US size 4 knitting needles, straight or circular used flat.
  • US size 3 knitting needles for straps, flowers, and tiny accessories.
  • Two 12 mm black safety eyes or glossy black sew-on buttons.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Removable stitch markers.
  • Two tiny tan buttons for the overall straps.
  • Optional small buttons for sandal decoration.
  • Embroidery needle for facial and floral details.

Gauge

  • Main stockinette gauge: 22 stitches and 30 rows = 4 inches after light stuffing.
  • Tighter detail gauge: 26 stitches and 34 rows = 4 inches on smaller needles.
  • Important: A firm gauge is needed so stuffing does not show through the fabric.

The calf in the image has visible, plush knitting with defined stockinette ridges and soft rounded shaping. Do not knit loosely. If your fabric stretches open when stuffed, go down one needle size.

Construction Notes

The calf is made as a soft toy with separate pieces. The head is knitted flat in a shaped oval, then seamed at the back and gathered at the top and lower chin. The body is knitted as a rounded seated torso with attached-looking overalls. Arms and legs are short tubes with rounded caramel hooves.

For the closest match to the image, keep the face broad and gentle. The head should look larger than the body. The ears sit out to the sides at a slight upward angle. The overalls cover the lower torso and rise to the chest, with two straps crossing over the shoulders and two tiny buttons at the front.

Fold the head with right sides facing and seam the back edge using mattress stitch. Turn right side out. Stuff firmly into a rounded oval, keeping the lower front slightly fuller for the muzzle area. Pull the top gathered edge tight, secure, then close the lower opening after stuffing.

Raised Cream Head Texture

The image shows a soft, bumpy, cloud-like texture on the upper head. This can be made with small knitted bobble knots sewn onto the crown. Use cream yarn and US size 3 needles.

  1. Make 26 mini bobbles.
  2. For each bobble, CO 3 sts.
  3. Row 1: K into front, back, and front of each stitch. 9 sts.
  4. Row 2: P all sts.
  5. Row 3: K2tog 4 times, K1. 5 sts.
  6. Cut yarn, thread through 5 sts, pull tight, and roll into a tiny bump.
  7. Sew bobbles randomly across the top of the head, beginning above the eyes and ending near the crown.

Place the bobbles close together but not in perfect rows. The goal is a soft calf forehead with a fluffy woolly top. Leave the lower face smooth so the eyes and muzzle remain clear.

Caramel Side Head Patches

The calf has warm caramel patches along both sides of the face, framing the cream center. Make two mirror patches.

  1. With caramel yarn, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: K all sts.
  3. Row 2: P all sts.
  4. Row 3: K1, M1, K6, M1, K1. 10 sts.

Sew one patch along each side of the face from upper cheek to behind the ear line. Curve each patch slightly toward the lower cheek. Do not cover the central cream face.

Outer Ears

Make two caramel outer ears. These ears are wide ovals, sewn at the sides of the head so they angle outward like the image.

  1. With caramel yarn, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: K all sts.
  3. Row 2: P all sts.
  4. Row 3: K1, M1, K6, M1, K1. 10 sts.

  14. Row 18: P all sts.
  15. Row 19: K1, SSK, K4, K2tog, K1. 8 sts.
  16. BO all sts.

Inner Ears

Make two smaller inner ears in pale beige or pale pink-beige. These are sewn onto the caramel outer ears before the ears are attached to the head.

  1. CO 6 sts.
  2. Row 1: K all sts.
  3. Row 2: P all sts.
  4. Row 3: K1, M1, K4, M1, K1. 8 sts.
  5. Row 4: P all sts.
  6. Rows 5-10: Work St st.
  7. Row 11: K1, SSK, K2, K2tog, K1. 6 sts.
  8. Row 12: P all sts.
  9. BO all sts.

Sew each inner ear to one outer ear using small whip stitches. Fold the base of each completed ear slightly into a shallow cup. Sew the ears to the sides of the head between rows 26 and 34 of the head, about 1 inch behind the eye line. Angle the tips outward and slightly upward.

Body Base

The body is short and rounded, mostly hidden by the caramel overalls. Use cream yarn for the upper sweater area and work flat.

  1. CO 18 sts.
  2. Row 1 RS: K all sts.
  3. Row 2 WS: P all sts.
  4. Row 3: K2, M1, K14, M1, K2. 20 sts.

  11. Join caramel brown yarn.
  12. Rows 19-36: Work St st in caramel brown.
  13. Row 37: K3, SSK, K14, K2tog, K3. 22 sts.
  14. Row 38: P all sts.
  15. Row 39: K2, SSK, K14, K2tog, K2. 20 sts.
  16. Row 40: P all sts.
  17. Row 41: K2, SSK, K12, K2tog, K2. 18 sts.
  18. BO all sts.

Make a second body panel the same way. Place the two body panels together with right sides facing. Seam around the sides and lower edge, leaving the neck edge open. Turn right side out, stuff firmly, then close the neck opening. Shape the seated base by pressing the lower caramel area slightly flat.

Sweater Ribbed Neck

The image shows a small cream ribbed collar between the head and body. Knit this separately and sew around the neck.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 28 sts.
  2. Rows 1-6: K1, P1 across each row.
  3. BO in rib.

Wrap the collar around the top of the body and seam the short ends together. Sew the collar to the body first, then place the head above it. This creates the visible ribbed turtleneck look.

Arms

Make two arms. Each arm has a cream sleeve and a caramel hoof tip. The arms hang downward and slightly outward from the shoulders.

  1. With caramel yarn, CO 10 sts.
  2. Rows 1-4: Work St st.
  3. Change to cream yarn.
  4. Row 5: K all sts.

Fold each arm lengthwise with right sides facing. Seam the long edge and hoof end. Turn right side out and stuff lightly. Do not overstuff the upper sleeve because the arm should lie softly against the body. Sew arms to the sides of the body directly below the collar.

Legs and Hooves

Make two short seated legs. Each leg has a caramel rounded hoof, a cream sock band, and a caramel upper section blending into the overalls.

  1. With caramel yarn, CO 12 sts.
  2. Row 1: K all sts.
  3. Row 2: P all sts.
  4. Row 3: K1, M1, K10, M1, K1. 14 sts.

  6. Rows 5-12: Work St st.
  7. Change to cream yarn.
  8. Rows 13-16: Work St st.
  9. Change to caramel yarn.
  10. Rows 17-26: Work St st.
  11. Row 27: K1, SSK, K8, K2tog, K1. 12 sts.
  12. Row 28: P all sts.
  13. BO all sts.

Fold each leg lengthwise and seam. Stuff the hoof firmly and the upper leg moderately. Sew the legs to the lower front of the body so they point forward and slightly apart. The cream sock band should remain visible above each hoof.

Caramel Overalls Front Bib

The overalls in the image are warm caramel brown with a high bib, two straps, and a flower on the front pocket area. The body already has a caramel lower half, but this extra bib makes the outfit look layered.

  1. With caramel yarn, CO 18 sts.
  2. Rows 1-4: K all rows for a garter lower ridge.
  3. Rows 5-18: Work St st.
  4. Row 19: K2, SSK, K10, K2tog, K2. 16 sts.
  5. Row 20: P all sts.
  6. Row 21: K2, SSK, K8, K2tog, K2. 14 sts.
  7. Row 22: P all sts.
  8. Rows 23-28: Work St st.
  9. BO all sts.

Sew the bib to the front of the body beginning at the lower belly and ending below the cream sweater chest. Keep the top edge straight and centered. Use tiny stitches so the bib looks like it is part of the outfit.

Overall Straps

Make two narrow caramel straps. They run upward from the bib, over the shoulders, and attach near the back.

  1. With caramel yarn and US size 3 needles, CO 4 sts.
  2. Rows 1-42: K all rows for garter stitch.
  3. BO all sts.
  4. Make a second strap the same way.

Sew the front ends of the straps to the upper corners of the bib. Cross them slightly over the shoulders if desired, then secure them to the back of the body. Sew one tiny tan button on each front strap attachment point.

Sweater Chest Acorn Motifs

The cream sweater front has small brown acorn-like motifs. Add these after the bib and straps are attached.

  • Use dark brown yarn for the acorn caps.
  • Use rust or caramel yarn for the acorn bodies.
  • Make 5 small motifs across the visible sweater chest.
  • Each acorn body uses 3 vertical duplicate stitches.
  • Each acorn cap uses 2 short horizontal stitches above the body.
  • Place the center acorn just below the neck ribbing.
  • Place two acorns on each side, slightly staggered.

Keep the acorns small. They should decorate the sweater without overwhelming the face or overalls.

Overall Knee Patches

The seated legs show cream sections and caramel rounded hooves. To match the handmade detail, add a few small cream highlight stitches at the top of each hoof and a soft seam line where the sock meets the hoof.

  • Use cream yarn and embroider 4 short vertical stitches above each caramel hoof.
  • Use caramel yarn and add 3 small duplicate stitches on each hoof center for texture.
  • Pull embroidery gently so the hoof remains rounded.

Face Placement

The face is calm and centered, with two large black eyes, a soft square pink muzzle, and no heavy mouth detail. Place the safety eyes before final head closure if using safety eyes. For sew-on eyes, attach them after stuffing.

  • Eye position: place eyes between rows 31 and 34 of the head.
  • Eye spacing: leave about 10 knitted stitches between the eyes.
  • Muzzle position: center below the eyes, beginning about 5 rows beneath them.
  • Muzzle size: about 1 inch wide and 0.75 inch tall.

Pink Square Muzzle Embroidery

Use pale pink yarn or embroidery floss. The muzzle in the image is a rounded square made from vertical satin stitches.

  2. Work vertical satin stitches from top to bottom across the rectangle.
  3. Use 8 to 10 vertical stitches total, placing them close together.
  4. Add one horizontal stitch across the top edge and one across the bottom edge.
  5. Do not add a large mouth. Keep the expression soft and toy-like.

Sandal Toe Bands

  1. With beige yarn, CO 5 sts.
  2. Rows 1-12: K all rows.
  3. BO all sts.
  4. Make two bands for each sandal.

Sew two beige bands across each caramel sole. The first band goes over the toe area. The second band crosses slightly higher toward the ankle. Angle the bands so they look like soft woven straps.

Sandal Flowers

  • For each sandal, embroider one small cream flower on the outer side of the top strap.
  • Use 5 tiny lazy-daisy stitches for petals.
  • Add one caramel or yellow center stitch.

Shoulder and Hoof Details

The cream sleeves show small caramel shoulder spots. Add one small caramel duplicate-stitch patch on the upper outside of each sleeve.

  • Use caramel yarn.
  • Work 4 duplicate stitches in a small diamond shape.
  • Place each patch near the top of the sleeve, close to the shoulder seam.
  • Keep the patches subtle and rounded.

Assembling the Calf

Before sewing permanently, pin every piece in place. This pattern depends on placement. The head must sit centered and slightly forward. The body should be rounded but stable. The legs should support the seated look.

  1. Place the stuffed body on a flat table.
  2. Pin the legs to the lower front, about 1 inch apart.
  3. Sew each leg securely with several passes through the body fabric.
  4. Pin the arms to the side shoulders, angled downward.
  5. Sew the arms firmly but avoid flattening the sleeves.
  6. Place the ribbed collar around the neck opening.
  7. Set the head above the collar, tilted very slightly forward.
  8. Sew the head to the body using a ladder stitch around the full neck.
  9. Attach the ears after the head is stable.
  10. Add the bag strap and tack it in place after the arms are attached.

  • Ears: side-mounted, slightly above eye level, tips pointing outward.
  • Eyes: glossy black, wide apart, placed high on smooth face area.
  • Muzzle: pale pink, centered below eyes, square with soft rounded edges.
  • Strawberry: upper left crown, close to fluffy head texture.
  • Bee: upper right crown, sitting above the forehead texture.
  • Bag: hanging at the calf’s right side, strap crossing diagonally.
  • Beret: separate display item placed beside the calf.
  • Sandals: separate display pair placed near the feet.

Creating the Fluffy Calf Look

The calf in the image has a soft woolly forehead and smooth lower face. The texture should look intentional, not messy. Keep the bobbles small and evenly distributed across the top of the head.

  • Do not place bobbles below the eye line.
  • Use cream yarn only for the forehead texture.
  • Use hidden stitches to attach each bobble.
  • Vary the direction of each bobble slightly.
  • Trim no yarn ends on the outside; bury all ends inside the head.

Optional Tail

The image front view does not show a tail, but a small back tail can be added if desired while keeping the display accurate from the front.

  1. With caramel yarn, CO 5 sts.
  2. Rows 1-8: K all rows.
  3. BO all sts.
  4. Fold and seam into a tiny tube.
  5. Add a cream tassel of 4 short strands at the end.
  6. Sew to the back lower body, hidden behind the seated shape.

Finishing the Overalls

To make the overalls look like the image, add light vertical texture with duplicate stitches in a slightly darker caramel yarn. These stitches should be subtle and follow the knitted rows.

  • Work 6 vertical duplicate-stitch lines down the front bib.
  • Keep each line 2 stitches apart.
  • Add 2 small dark brown stitches near the lower side seams if desired.
  • Sew the tan buttons through both strap and bib layers for strength.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the face before securing all yarn ends. The eyes should be level, the pink muzzle should sit centered, and the ears should frame the head evenly. Add a few tiny cream stitches under the muzzle if you need to smooth the lower face shape.

  • Secure safety eyes tightly or sew button eyes with strong thread.
  • Do not pull the muzzle stitches too tight.
  • Use a long needle to gently sculpt the face by passing yarn from one eye to the back of the head, pulling lightly, and knotting securely.
  • Sew the head accessories last so they remain clean and visible.
  • Steam-block only the removable accessories, not the stuffed calf.

Care Notes

This knitted calf is best treated as a decorative handmade toy. Because it includes small buttons, eyes, and accessories, it is not recommended for children under three years old unless all small parts are embroidered instead of attached separately.

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if using safety eyes, buttons, or structured accessories.
  • Press water out gently with a towel.
  • Air dry flat away from direct sunlight.
  • Reshape the ears, overalls, and bag while damp.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is larger than the body and slightly forward-facing.
  • The cream forehead texture is raised and fluffy.
  • The caramel ears are wide, rounded, and angled outward.
  • The pink muzzle is square and centered.
  • The overalls have straps, buttons, and a small flower.
  • The sweater chest has tiny acorn motifs.
  • The crossbody bag has floral embroidery and a diagonal strap.
  • The strawberry and bee are placed on opposite sides of the crown.
  • The beret has a carrot applique.
  • The sandals are made as a matching pair with beige straps and flowers.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished calf in a dry place with good airflow. Keep it away from damp shelves, strong sunlight, and heavy objects that may flatten the stuffed shape. If displaying the beret and sandals separately, store them in a small fabric pouch when not in use.

  • Use a soft brush to remove dust from the fluffy head texture.
  • Lift dust from the bag embroidery with low-tack tape if needed.
  • Do not scrub the muzzle because satin stitches can loosen.
  • Refresh the shape by gently pressing the body and legs back into position.
  • Check buttons and small accessories regularly if the toy is handled often.

Your Strawberry Bee Calf is now complete, with its soft cream face, caramel overalls, sweet pink muzzle, tiny garden details, matching beret, floral bag, and little sandals ready for display.
