Knitting Tutorial: Autumn Cable Knit Fox – Free Knitting Pattern

This autumn cable knit fox is a cozy handmade doll with a round fox face, pointed ears, glossy safety eyes, a cream muzzle, a rust-orange cable sweater, striped green-and-cream pants, tiny button shoes, a leafy acorn headpiece, a matching fair isle pom-pom hat, a mushroom crossbody bag, a small thermos, and a miniature autumn pie.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This knitting pattern is written to recreate the fox doll shown in the image as closely as possible. The finished fox has a large rounded head, a smaller soft body, short cylindrical arms, straight stuffed legs, a tapered fox tail, and removable autumn accessories.

The main look depends on neat stockinette fabric, firm stuffing, visible sweater cables, clean color changes, and careful facial placement. Work slowly around the face and sweater because those two areas create the recognizable character of the doll.

  • Finished fox height: about 11.5 in / 29 cm from shoes to ear tips.
  • Hat height: about 3.25 in / 8 cm without pom-pom.
  • Bag size: about 2.5 in / 6.5 cm wide.
  • Skill level: advanced beginner to intermediate.
  • Construction: mostly worked in the round with small flat details.
  • Recommended method: magic loop or double-pointed needles.

Gauge and Fabric Notes

Use a tight gauge so stuffing does not show through the knitted fabric. The sample look is firm but soft, with rounded shaping and clear vertical knit stitches. If your fabric looks loose, go down one needle size.

  • Main gauge: 24 sts and 34 rnds = 4 in / 10 cm in stockinette after light blocking.
  • Accessory gauge: 26 sts and 36 rows = 4 in / 10 cm on smaller needles.
  • Stuffing style: firm in the head and feet, medium-firm in the body, light in the arms and tail tip.
  • Seaming style: use mattress stitch for flat pieces and whipstitch for tiny decorative parts.

Color Placement Guide

The fox head is mostly rust orange on top with a cream lower face and cheeks. The ears are orange outside with cream inner triangles. The body wears an orange cable sweater with a cream-and-green yoke, while the legs are green-and-cream striped pants.

  • Rust orange: top of head, ears, arms, sweater, tail base, hat ribbing and hat stripes.
  • Cream: muzzle, lower face, inner ears, sweater yoke, tail tip, pants stripes, hat body.
  • Moss green: pants stripes, yoke line, hat motifs, leaf detail, thermos body.
  • Tan beige: shoes, bag, pie crust, acorn caps.
  • Medium brown: paws, tail shading, acorns, embroidery details.

Muzzle

The muzzle is a small cream oval sewn onto the lower center of the face. It should sit below the eyes and carry the black nose at its upper center.

  1. With cream and US 3 needles, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: p all sts.
  3. Row 2: kfb, k6, kfb. 10 sts.

  • Attach the black oval nose at the upper center of the muzzle.
  • Embroider one short vertical black line from the nose down for 3 rows.
  • Make a tiny split mouth with two short diagonal stitches at the bottom.
  • Add two short cream or tan cheek stitches on each side if desired.

Ears

The ears are pointed and sit high on the head. Each ear has an orange outer piece and a smaller cream inner piece. Sew them at a slight outward angle so they frame the round fox face.

Facial Embroidery and Eye Shine

The glossy black eyes are a key feature. Safety eyes create the shine, but you may add one tiny white stitch at the upper outside edge of each eye if you want a more animated look.

  • Place the eyes evenly and make sure the muzzle sits centered below them.
  • Use black yarn or embroidery floss for the nose line and small mouth.
  • Use rust orange to tidy the edge where the orange forehead meets the cream face.
  • Use two very small tan stitches on each cheek to soften the expression.

  5. Pin arms at the upper sweater sides and angle them downward.
  6. Sew through the arm top and sweater body several times.
  7. Attach the tail to the back left side, curving the cream tip outward.
  8. Place the sweater collar neatly under the chin.

Finishing the Sweater Texture

The cable sweater should be the most textured clothing detail. After sewing the fox together, gently lift each cable crossing with the tip of a tapestry needle so it stands out from the background.

  • Do not over-block the sweater because the cable texture may flatten.
  • Use a light steam from above only, without pressing the iron onto the fabric.
  • Make sure the orange sweater hem sits just above the striped pants.
  • Hide all yarn tails inside the sweater or body.

Optional Fair Isle Duplicate Stitch

If carrying multiple colors around the tiny hat feels difficult, knit the hat body in cream and use duplicate stitch afterward. This method still gives the same autumn pattern effect while being easier for newer knitters.

  • Use moss green duplicate stitches for small V shapes across the cream section.
  • Use rust orange duplicate stitches for tiny dots and short horizontal details.
  • Keep all duplicate stitches loose enough that the hat fabric remains flexible.
  • Secure yarn tails inside the hat crown.

Assembly Order for Best Results

The order of assembly matters because the accessories are small and can get in the way. Finish the main fox first, then add the headpiece, shoes, and removable accessories.

  1. Knit and stuff the head.
  2. Add the muzzle, eyes, nose, mouth, and ears.
  3. Knit and stuff the body.
  4. Knit the sweater and place it on the body.
  5. Sew head to body.
  6. Knit and attach legs.
  7. Knit and attach shoes.
  8. Knit and attach arms.
  9. Knit and attach tail.
  10. Add acorn headpiece.
  11. Knit hat, bag, thermos, and pie.
  12. Check balance, shaping, and all yarn tails.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the fox from the front, side, and top before tying final knots. The ears should be even, the eyes should sit level, and the muzzle should be centered. The acorn cluster belongs between the ears, slightly leaning to one side.

  • Use matching yarn to close any visible gaps under the arms.
  • Shape the cheeks by gently pressing stuffing outward from inside before closing the head.
  • Secure the safety eyes tightly, but do not pull so hard that the face puckers.
  • Brush away loose fibers with clean fingers, not a rough comb.
  • Place the hat, bag, thermos, and pie around the fox for the full photo-style display.

Care Notes

This knitted fox is best used as a decorative handmade doll. Because it includes safety eyes, buttons, and small accessories, it is not suitable for children under 3 years old.

  • Spot clean only with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if safety eyes, buttons, or accessories are attached.
  • Let the doll air dry fully before storing.
  • Keep the pom-pom away from hook-and-loop tape or rough surfaces.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is round, firm, and larger than the body.
  • The cream face panel reaches across both cheeks.
  • The black eyes are glossy, even, and about 10 sts apart.
  • The orange cable sweater is centered below the face.
  • The cream-and-green yoke sits cleanly under the collar.
  • The striped pants are straight and even on both legs.
  • The tan shoes have orange straps and tiny side buttons.
  • The tail has a cream tip and curves behind the body.
  • The acorn headpiece is secure between the ears.
  • The hat, mushroom bag, thermos, and pie are complete.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, store the fox upright or lying flat in a clean cotton bag. Avoid tight plastic containers for long-term storage because trapped moisture can affect yarn texture.

  • For dust, use a soft dry cloth and gently pat the surface.
  • For small stains, dab with cool water and a tiny amount of mild soap.
  • Never twist or wring the doll after cleaning.
  • Reshape the head, feet, sweater, and tail while damp.
  • Dry in shade on a towel, turning once so air reaches all sides.
  • Store the small accessories in a separate pouch if they are removable.

Once finished, the autumn cable knit fox should look cozy, rounded, and richly detailed, with its fox face, cable sweater, striped pants, tiny shoes, acorn headpiece, matching hat, mushroom bag, thermos, and little pie all working together as one complete fall-inspired knitted display.
