Crochet Tutorial: Sunflower Garden Puppy – Free Crochet Pattern.

This cheerful crochet puppy is designed with a soft tan body, a rounded puppy head, floppy ears, a cream muzzle, black safety eyes, and sweet paw details. The outfit includes mint-and-beige striped short overalls with straps, button accents, tiny flower embroidery, a matching garden hat, small sandals with bee decorations, a crochet bone, and a two-tone ball. The sunflower beside one ear gives the puppy a bright summer garden look.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US crochet terms and is worked mostly in continuous rounds. The puppy in the image has a firm amigurumi shape, compact stitches, a rounded head slightly larger than the body, slim arms, long legs, cream paws, and removable-style accessories. Use tight tension so the stuffing does not show through.

The finished puppy measures about 11–12 inches tall when made with sport weight cotton yarn and a 2.25 mm crochet hook. The hat is about 5 inches wide. The sandals are made as small decorative accessories to match the puppy’s feet.

Materials

  • Yarn weight: Sport weight cotton or cotton blend yarn.
  • Main puppy color: warm tan beige.
  • Cream yarn: muzzle, paws, feet, bone, shirt, and small flowers.
  • Dark brown yarn: ear, eye patch, sunflower center, and small facial accents.
  • Mint aqua yarn: overalls, hat trim, sandal straps, and ball.
  • Light beige yarn: outfit stripes, hat body, sandals, and ball accent.
  • Yellow yarn: sunflower petals and bee details.
  • Small amount of black yarn: nose, mouth, paw lines, and bee stripes.

  • Buttons: four small beige buttons, about 8–10 mm wide.
  • Stuffing: polyester fiberfill.
  • Other tools: yarn needle, stitch markers, scissors, pins, and embroidery needle.

Gauge and Tension

For the puppy body, 6 sc across and 7 rounds high should measure about 1 inch when worked firmly with a 2.25 mm hook. The stitches in the image are tight and even, with a smooth amigurumi texture. If your stitches look loose, use a smaller hook.

Stuff each piece gradually. The head should be firm and round, the body should stay slightly oval, and the arms and legs should remain narrower than the head. Do not overstuff the ears or clothing pieces because they should lie naturally against the puppy.

Color Placement Guide

  • Head: mostly tan beige with a dark brown patch around one eye.
  • Muzzle: cream oval placed low on the face.
  • Left ear from viewer’s side: dark brown floppy ear hanging down.
  • Right ear from viewer’s side: tan beige folded ear on top side of head.

Dark Brown Eye Patch

The eye patch is an oval spot around one eye, placed on the puppy’s right side from the puppy’s perspective. It should look like the dark patch in the photo, slightly taller than wide.

  1. Using dark brown yarn, ch 7.
  2. R1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc 4, 3 sc in last ch. Work on the opposite side of the chain: sc 4, inc in last st. 14 sts.
  3. R2: inc, sc 4, inc 3 times, sc 4, inc 2 times. 20 sts.
  4. R3: sc 1, inc, sc 5, (sc 1, inc) repeat 3 times, sc 5, (sc 1, inc) repeat 2 times. 26 sts.
  5. FO with a long tail for sewing.

Pin the patch around one safety eye before the eye is locked in place if possible. If the eye is already installed, carefully cut a tiny center opening in the patch and slip it around the eye. Sew the patch flat using small stitches around the edge.

Cream Muzzle

The muzzle is a raised cream oval that sits low on the face. It should cover the lower center of the head and slightly overlap the lower space between the eyes.

  1. Using cream yarn, ch 8.
  2. R1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc 5, 3 sc in last ch. Work on the opposite side: sc 5, inc in last st. 16 sts.
  3. R2: inc, sc 5, inc 3 times, sc 5, inc 2 times. 22 sts.
  4. R3: sc 1, inc, sc 6, (sc 1, inc) repeat 3 times, sc 6, (sc 1, inc) repeat 2 times. 28 sts.
  5. R4: sc in each st around. 28 sts.
  6. FO with a long tail for sewing.

Add a very light amount of stuffing behind the muzzle. Sew it between R14 and R21 of the head. The top of the muzzle should sit just below the eye line, and the widest part should be centered on the face.

Nose and Mouth

  1. Using black yarn, embroider a triangular nose across the upper center of the muzzle, about 4 stitches wide and 3 rounds tall.
  2. Fill the triangle with horizontal satin stitches until it looks rounded and solid.
  3. Bring the yarn down from the bottom point of the nose for 3 rounds.
  4. Add a small split mouth by stitching one short diagonal line to the left and one short diagonal line to the right.

Puppy Ears

Dark Brown Floppy Ear

The darker ear hangs down beside the sunflower. It is long, soft, and rounded at the bottom. Do not stuff this piece.

  1. Using dark brown yarn, 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: (sc 1, inc) repeat 6 times. 18 sts.

  8. R15–R17: sc in each st around. 12 sts.
  9. Flatten the opening and sc 6 across both layers.
  10. FO with a long tail.

Sew the dark ear to the side of the head between R7 and R11. Angle the top forward slightly so the ear falls along the side of the face.

Tan Folded Ear

The tan ear is shorter and rests folded on top of the head. It gives the puppy the relaxed garden-toy expression seen in the image.

  1. Using tan beige yarn, 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: (sc 1, inc) repeat 6 times. 18 sts.

  5. R7: (sc 4, dec) repeat 3 times. 15 sts.
  6. R8–R10: sc in each st around. 15 sts.
  7. Flatten the opening and sc 7 across both layers, leaving 1 st unworked if needed.
  8. FO with a long tail.

Fold the ear forward at the base. Sew it to the top side of the head between R6 and R10. Add a few hidden stitches near the middle of the ear so it stays gently folded.

Body

The body is made in tan beige first, then dressed with a separate pair of striped overalls and a cream shirt panel. The shape should be shorter than the head and slightly pear-shaped.

  1. Using tan beige yarn, 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc in each st around. 12 sts.

Facial Shaping

Use tan yarn or strong thread to lightly shape the face. Insert the needle under the head, come out beside one eye, go across to the other eye, and pull gently. Repeat once. This creates a soft puppy expression without making the face too tight.

Do not pull so strongly that the muzzle sinks deeply. The image shows a sweet rounded face, so the shaping should be subtle and natural.

Assembly Order

  1. Sew the muzzle to the head first.
  2. Add the black nose and mouth embroidery.
  3. Sew the dark eye patch around one eye if it was not added earlier.
  4. Sew the dark floppy ear to one side of the head.
  5. Sew the tan folded ear to the opposite top side.
  6. Sew the sunflower and leaves near the dark ear.
  7. Sew the cream shirt panel to the body.
  8. Dress the body with the striped overalls.
  9. Sew the legs under the body, spacing them slightly apart.
  10. Sew the arms to the upper sides of the body.
  11. Sew the head to the body using a firm circular seam.
  12. Add the overall straps and buttons.
  13. Make the hat, sandals, bone, and ball separately.

How to Sew the Head to the Body

Place the body upright and center the head on top. The muzzle should face forward and slightly downward, just like the puppy lying in the garden image. Pin the head before sewing to check balance.

Using the long tail from the body, sew through the neck opening and the lower rounds of the head. Work around the neck twice. Add extra stitches at the front and back so the head does not tilt too much.

How to Position the Legs

The legs should be attached to the lower front of the body so the puppy can sit or lie flat. Place each leg about 3 stitches away from the center line. The cream feet should point forward.

Sew through the flattened top of each leg and the lower body rounds. Add a few extra stitches to hold the legs straight. The overalls should cover the top part of the legs.

How to Position the Arms

The arms are sewn just below the shoulder line, partly under the overall straps. They hang down naturally along the sides. The cream hands should rest near the lower part of the overalls.

Use the long yarn tail to sew each arm securely. Keep the arms slightly angled forward so the puppy looks soft and cuddly from the front.

Decorative Stitch Details

  • Paws: use black yarn to make short vertical claw lines on each hand and foot.
  • Overall texture: add tiny cream seed stitches on the mint stripes if you want the same handmade look.
  • Flower detail: sew the small flower low on one side of the overalls.
  • Hat tie: keep the mint bow loose and soft so it looks like a garden sunhat ribbon.
  • Bee details: add tiny black stripes and cream wings on each sandal bee.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the face from the front before securing the final knots. The eyes should sit evenly, the muzzle should be centered, and the nose should be bold and rounded. The dark eye patch should frame one eye without covering the muzzle.

Add the ears after the face is complete. The dark ear should hang beside the sunflower, while the tan ear should fold gently over the upper side of the head. This gives the puppy the same sweet handmade expression shown in the image.

Dress the puppy with the striped overalls and adjust the straps. Sew the buttons firmly. Place the hat, sandals, bone, and ball nearby as matching accessories, or tack them lightly in place for display.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean the puppy with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not soak the toy if it contains buttons or safety eyes.
  • Press with a towel to remove moisture.
  • Air dry flat in a shaded area.
  • Do not tumble dry, bleach, or iron the crochet pieces.

  • The cream muzzle is centered and lightly stuffed.
  • One eye has a dark brown patch around it.
  • One ear is dark brown and floppy.
  • One ear is tan beige and folded forward.
  • The sunflower has yellow petals, a brown center, and green leaves.
  • The overalls have mint and beige stripes.
  • The front bib has two straps and button details.
  • The paws have small black claw stitches.
  • The hat, sandals, bone, and ball match the garden theme.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For long-term display, keep the puppy away from direct sunlight because strong light can fade the mint, yellow, and beige yarns. Store the hat and sandals beside the puppy so the small pieces do not get stretched.

If dust collects on the stitches, use a soft dry brush to clean the surface. Brush gently around the sunflower petals, bee wings, and button areas because these small details can loosen if pulled.

When storing the puppy, place it in a breathable cotton bag instead of a plastic bag. Add tissue paper inside the hat brim if you want it to keep its round garden shape.

Before giving the puppy to a child, check all buttons, eyes, embroidered lines, and accessories. For babies or toddlers, replace buttons and safety eyes with fully embroidered details.
