Pattern Overview

This pattern creates a seated knitted puppy doll with shaped limbs and a fitted blue dress. The puppy has a long cream muzzle, a white center stripe, warm brown face patches, glossy safety eyes, soft dark floppy ears, and small flower accents near the ears.

The main doll is knitted mostly in the round for a smooth toy finish. Smaller details such as the dress hem, daisies, bees, mushroom bag, hat, trowel, and watering can are made separately and sewn on after stuffing.

  • Finished size: about 11.5 to 12.5 inches tall when seated, depending on yarn tension.
  • Skill level: adventurous beginner to intermediate.
  • Main techniques: knitting in the round, increasing, decreasing, short shaping, mattress stitch, embroidery, and sewing small appliques.
  • Construction style: seamless body pieces with sewn accessories.
  • Recommended gauge: tight toy gauge so stuffing does not show through.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in warm tan brown for the puppy body and arms.
  • Worsted weight yarn in cream white for paws, lower legs, muzzle, and center face stripe.
  • Worsted weight yarn in medium chocolate brown for ears, tail, and face markings.
  • Worsted weight yarn in sky blue for the dress and sun hat.
  • Small amounts of yellow, white, black, red, lavender, purple, green, rust orange, light gray, and beige yarn.
  • US size 3 double-pointed needles or circular needles for magic loop.
  • US size 4 needles for the blue dress skirt if you want a softer drape.
  • Two 10 mm black safety eyes with washers.
  • One 13 to 15 mm brown safety nose or a knitted/embroidered nose.
  • Polyester fiberfill stuffing.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Small amount of black embroidery thread for mouth dots, bee stripes, and slipper details.
  • Optional: thin beige cord or braided yarn for the mushroom bag strap.

Gauge and Knitting Notes

For the puppy body, use a firm gauge of about 6 stitches and 8 rows per inch in stockinette. The fabric should be tight enough that the stuffing does not peek through. If your stitches look loose, go down one needle size.

The dress in the image has a slightly smoother, softer drape than the body. You may knit the dress with the same needles for a structured skirt or move up one needle size for a gentler flare. The hem should sit wide and rounded around the puppy’s seated body.

  • Stuff the head firmly, especially around the muzzle and cheeks.
  • Stuff the body firmly at the neck and hips, but keep the lower seated area slightly flexible.
  • Do not overstuff the floppy ears, dress, hat brim, or bag strap.
  • Use small, secure stitches when attaching flowers and bees.

Color Placement Guide

The puppy in the image has a tan-brown head with cream white running down the center of the face. The muzzle is white and rounded, with a brown nose placed at the center front. Darker brown markings frame both sides of the head, and the floppy ears are deep chocolate brown.

The body and upper arms are tan brown. The paws and lower legs are cream white. The dress is sky blue with a fitted bodice, flared skirt, rounded hem, and white daisies across the lower front. Yellow bee slippers cover the feet.

  • Face stripe: cream white, centered from forehead to muzzle.
  • Side face patches: medium brown, around the eyes and cheeks.
  • Ears: dark chocolate brown, wide and floppy.
  • Dress: bright sky blue with ribbed neckline and skirt texture.
  • Hat: matching sky blue with small white daisies.
  • Bag: rust orange mushroom cap, cream lower pouch, green stems, purple flowers.

Head

The head is worked from the neck upward in the round. Use tan brown as the base color. The face stripe can be worked with simple intarsia-style color changes in the round, or it can be duplicate stitched after knitting. For the cleanest result, knit the head in tan brown and duplicate stitch the white center stripe before attaching the muzzle.

  1. With tan brown yarn, CO 12 sts. Divide evenly over needles and join in the round.

Insert safety eyes between Rnds 21 and 22, placing them about 12 stitches apart across the front. Angle them slightly toward the muzzle area to match the soft, expressive puppy face in the image.

  1. Rnd 37: K2, k2tog around. You now have 24 sts.
  2. Begin stuffing the head firmly. Shape the cheeks with your fingers as you stuff.
  3. Rnd 38: K1, k2tog around. You now have 16 sts.
  4. Rnd 39: K2tog around. You now have 8 sts.
  5. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull closed, and secure.

White Face Stripe

The white face stripe is narrow at the forehead and wider as it reaches the muzzle. It should sit centered between the eyes and continue down the front of the nose area. Work it with duplicate stitch using cream white yarn.

  1. Start at the top center of the forehead around Rnd 31.
  2. Duplicate stitch 3 stitches wide for 5 rounds.
  3. Increase the stripe to 5 stitches wide between Rnds 24 and 30.
  4. Continue 5 stitches wide down between the eyes.
  5. Widen to 7 stitches across at the lower face where the muzzle will be attached.
  6. Keep the edges slightly uneven and soft, not perfectly straight, to match the handmade puppy markings.

Muzzle

The muzzle is knitted separately in cream white and sewn to the lower front of the face. It should be oval, raised, and slightly longer vertically than horizontally. The nose sits near the upper center of the muzzle.

  1. With cream white yarn, CO 8 sts and work flat.
  2. Row 1: K all sts.
  3. Row 2: P all sts.
  4. Row 3: K1, kfb, K4, kfb, K1. You now have 10 sts.

  12. Row 16: P all sts.
  13. BO all sts, leaving a long sewing tail.

Place the muzzle across the lower front of the head, with the top edge just below the eyes. Add a small amount of stuffing underneath before fully closing the seam. Sew around the edge using small mattress stitches.

Nose and Mouth

  1. Attach the brown safety nose to the upper center of the muzzle before sewing the muzzle completely closed.
  2. If embroidering the nose, satin stitch a rounded triangle about 5 stitches wide and 4 rows tall.
  3. With black embroidery thread, make a short vertical line from the nose downward for 3 rows.
  4. Add two tiny curved mouth marks, one to each side, using 2 small backstitches per side.
  5. Add 3 tiny black whisker dots on each side of the lower muzzle.

Dark Brown Face Patches

The darker face patches create the puppy’s expressive markings around both eyes. These can be duplicate stitched after the head is knitted. Keep the patches soft and organic, following the image rather than making perfect circles.

  • Left patch: begin above the left eye, cover about 9 stitches wide and 10 rounds tall, tapering near the muzzle.
  • Right patch: begin above the right eye, cover about 8 stitches wide and 10 rounds tall, tapering along the white stripe.
  • Use medium brown yarn and duplicate stitch lightly so the fabric does not become stiff.
  • Blend a few tan stitches into the edges for a natural speckled look.

Use darker gray yarn to embroider 3 curved lines on the can body. These lines imitate the ribbed texture visible in the image.

Facial Shaping

To make the puppy face look gentle and close to the image, add light shaping around the eyes after the head is stuffed. This step gives the face a slightly recessed eye area and raised cheeks.

  1. Thread a long needle with tan brown yarn.
  2. Insert the needle at the back lower head and bring it out beside the first eye.
  3. Take one small stitch beside the eye and return to the back lower head.
  4. Pull gently until the eye settles slightly inward.
  5. Repeat for the second eye with equal tension.
  6. Knot securely and hide the yarn tail inside the head.

Joining the Head and Body

Place the head on the body with the muzzle facing forward. The head should sit upright, not tilted too far down. The lower back of the head should touch the top of the body firmly so the puppy can sit securely.

  1. Pin the head to the body before sewing.
  2. Use the long body yarn tail to sew around the neck opening once.
  3. Sew around a second time, catching stitches from both the head and body.
  4. Add extra stitches at the back of the neck for support.
  5. Check that the face is centered over the dress front.

Dress Placement and Decorative Balance

The blue dress should sit evenly around the body, with the bodice smooth and the skirt flaring outward. The lower hem should cover the hip area and partly overlap the tops of the legs.

  • Place the neckline just below the chin.
  • Keep the armholes open and smooth around the shoulders.
  • Sew the skirt only at a few hidden points so it keeps its soft flare.
  • Arrange the daisies across the front hem before sewing them permanently.
  • Place the mushroom bag over the right front side of the dress.

Optional Speckled Puppy Texture

The puppy in the image has a slightly mottled handmade texture, especially on the face. You can create this by adding tiny duplicate stitches in tan, cream, and medium brown after the main pieces are assembled.

  • Add 5 to 8 tan duplicate stitches inside the darker face patches.
  • Add 4 to 6 medium brown stitches near the cheeks.
  • Add 3 cream stitches near the bridge of the nose to soften the center stripe.
  • Keep all speckles small and scattered, not lined up.

Flower Crown Placement

The small flowers near the ears should look like they are tucked into the fur. They are not arranged as a full crown. Instead, they sit in little clusters beside the ear bases.

  1. Place the blue flower above the puppy’s left eye near the left ear base.
  2. Place a yellow flower beside it, slightly lower.
  3. Place the lavender flower near the right ear base.
  4. Place another pale yellow flower beside the lavender flower.
  5. Sew through the flower centers only, leaving the petals soft.

Finishing the Hat Display

The hat can be placed beside the finished puppy, just like in the image. If you want it to fit the puppy’s head, do not sew the brim too tightly. The brim should stay wide and slightly wavy.

  • Steam lightly with your hands only if the brim curls too much.
  • Do not press the hat flat with an iron.
  • Add daisies after shaping the brim.
  • Place one daisy near the front edge for visibility.

Accessory Arrangement

For the full image-inspired display, place the trowel near one side of the puppy and the watering can near the other side. The hat should sit behind or beside the puppy, with the decorated brim visible.

  • Set the trowel near the lower left side of the puppy.
  • Set the watering can near the lower right side.
  • Let the mushroom bag hang across the front dress area.
  • Keep the bee slippers fully visible at the front.
  • Angle the ears outward so the flower details are easy to see.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Sew the head firmly to the body and check that the muzzle points forward.
  2. Attach both ears high on the head with the rounded ends hanging down.
  3. Sew the arms to the shoulders so the cream paws rest beside the dress.
  4. Sew the legs under the skirt with the feet pointing forward.
  5. Add the yellow bee slippers and secure them around the ankles.
  6. Place the dress on the body and tack it at the back, sides, and neckline.
  7. Sew the daisies and bees onto the blue dress.
  8. Add the mushroom bag diagonally across the body.
  9. Embroider the face stripe, patches, mouth, muzzle dots, and paw claws.
  10. Attach flower clusters near the ears as the final decorative detail.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if safety eyes, safety nose, or small accessories are used.
  • Reshape the dress, ears, and hat while damp if needed.
  • Let the toy air dry fully before storing.
  • Keep away from pets that may chew small sewn details.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The white face stripe is centered from forehead to muzzle.
  • The muzzle is raised and softly stuffed.
  • The eyes are even and slightly recessed.
  • The ears are floppy and attached at matching angles.
  • The blue dress flares evenly around the seated body.
  • The daisies are placed across the lower skirt front.
  • The bees have yellow bodies, black stripes, and white wings.
  • The mushroom bag hangs diagonally across the dress.
  • The bee slippers are secure and visible.
  • The hat, trowel, and watering can match the garden theme.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape of the knitted puppy, clean only the areas that need attention. Use a soft cloth with cool water and gently dab the surface. Avoid rubbing the embroidered daisies, bees, face details, and small flower clusters.

When storing the puppy, keep it in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Place tissue paper inside the hat brim and around the ears if you want to protect their shape. Do not compress the mushroom bag or watering can under heavier items.

  • Store flat or seated upright in a dust-free box.
  • Avoid strong heat, steam, and direct ironing.
  • Refresh the fur texture by smoothing stitches gently with your fingers.
  • Check sewn accessories occasionally and reinforce loose stitches when needed.
